Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta share a common goal in ‌their battle for Premier League supremacy but are going about achieving it in very ​different ways. While leaders Arsenal have become ‌kings of the set piece this season, scoring 33% of their 58 goals ‌from such situations, including 16 from corner routines, ‌City have largely shunned the Premier League’s ‌new obsession. This season, 27% of all Premier League goals have come from set pieces, more than any other league in Europe and the highest percentage in England’s top flight since 2009-10.Corners have led to 138 goals, already more than in the whole of the previous campaign. Guardiola brought his famed tika-taka style to the Premier League when he arrived at City in 2016 and has remained faithful to an intricate possession-based style during a glittering reign that has delivered six English titles and provided a blueprint that many others tried to follow. The signing of goal-machine Erling Haaland ​led to a slightly more direct style in recent seasons, but City’s essence remains intact, evidenced by the fact they are second-bottom of the table based on goals scored from set plays at 10.5%. “Set-pieces have started to ‌be important. It was different when I started as a ​manager,” Guardiola told reporters ahead of his side’s crucial home clash with ​Nottingham Forest which they need to win to keep the pressure on Arsenal. “When I was a young boy we said the people in England celebrate corners and free-kicks like a goal. I remember perfectly, so nothing has changed in that way.” Arsenal are not lacking for flair players and usually dominate possession but were labelled “ugly” by pundit Chris Sutton after a 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday in which both goals arrived via headers from corners. The sight of players grappling, holding and blocking like wrestlers before corners was a feature of the derby but it is what enticed millions across the world to tune in. Liverpool manager Arne ‌Slot said games are no longer “a ‌joy” while Chelsea’s Liam Rosenior has demanded a review to control the rugby-like scrums at corners. City will aim to keep the pressure firmly on Arsenal by beating struggling Forest, but do not expect to see Guardiola demanding long throws or for his side to play for corners. Not that he was being drawn too deeply into the debate about Arsenal’s methods as he addressed the media. “It is the business I am in. I am a manager. I can’t say ‘I don’t like set-pieces’. I adapt and do it,” Guardiola said. “Football has been played in so many ways since it was created. ​How it is played in England is different in the way it is played in Spain or Italy. Every manager plays in different ways. How boring would it be if all the managers played in the same way. I have to adapt. If I don’t like, I don’t watch but I have to adapt.” Arsenal, who are five points clear having played one game more than City, travel to Brighton & Hove Albion, whose manager Fabian Hurzeler knows what is coming. “It is definitely a big strength from Arsenal, they do it in an impressive way this season,” he said. “They have a lot of ‌good takers, they have ​a lot of physicality, so it is definitely something we have to take care of, but we will stick to our principles.” 

Pep Guardiola insists he “couldn’t care less” about Arsenal’s stumble letting Manchester City back into the Premier League title race. Guardiola’s side were in danger of being blown away by Arsenal after their inconsistent form left the Gunners in pole position. But second-placed City have been handed a lifeline by Arsenal’s damaging draws against Wolves and Brentford. They are now just five points behind Arsenal with a game in hand and a home match against Mikel Arteta’s men to come in April. If City win their remaining 12 matches they will be crowned champions for the fifth time in the last six seasons. But Guardiola is not getting carried away by the opportunity. Instead, he remains focused on today’s visit from Newcastle, when a win would close the gap on Arsenal to two points before the Gunners face Tottenham in the north London derby tomorrow. “I didn’t talk about the table, or our position or something like that. I could not care less,” Guardiola said. “I didn’t talk about that for one second. Just Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle. If you ask me this question with two or three games left, I will have your answer. It’s 12 games left, it’s an eternity.” Having won six titles during 10 years at City, Guardiola knows the final weeks of the season will bring more twists and turns. He also has experience of watching Arsenal let substantial leads slip away in the 2023 and 2024 title races, allowing City to snatch the trophy from their grasp. “Many things are going to happen until the end of the season. For now it is Newcastle, a rest and after it Leeds. It has always been like that,” he said. “Seventy per cent of the players are new, so they don’t have the experience to live these kinds of situations. An experience is to win tomorrow. It is only one. Arsenal were nine points (ahead) when we had a game in hand, so whenever everybody is on the same games played then after that we will see the difference. I understand you want to anticipate what is going to happen. That doesn’t count. It is Newcastle, that is all.” Arteta urges Arsenal to ‘write own destiny’ after title wobble Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta challenged spluttering Arsenal to start writing their “own destiny” in north London derby at Tottenham after losing control of the Premier League title race. The Gunners have finished as runners-up for the last three seasons and their latest untimely stumble has raised pointed questions about their ability to cope with the pressure of the title race. But Arteta is adamant his players can handle the tension, as long as they embrace the opportunity to make history. “What I have seen is a tremendous reaction again. When you lose points with the last kick of the game, in an unpredictable manner, nobody can really understand that. But this is football,” he said. “Life moves on, there’s nothing we can do. It is about what happens next. That was a chapter. In chapter 27, we draw against Wolves. In the next one it is about how we write our own destiny going forward.” Arsenal have squandered the lead in their last two matches, drawing 1-1 with Brentford and 2-2 at bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Failing to beat Wolves after establishing a two-goal lead was especially painful, with a mix-up between keeper David Raya and defender Gabriel Magalhaes sparking Tom Edozie’s stoppage-time equaliser. “The immediate reaction is tough. It was a shock to the system. We wanted to win and we couldn’t and we have to move on,” Arteta said. “But we have clear instructions. We have to live in the present. The present is beautiful, we are exactly where we want to be in every competition.” Arsenal have won just two of their last seven league games, but troubled Tottenham are in even worse form, with no wins in their previous eight top-flight matches.

Pep Guardiola said Tuesday Manchester City must address a habit of second half slumps if they are to retain any hope of chasing down Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.City scored twice late on to snatch a 2-1 victory away to Liverpool on Sunday and move back within six points of the Gunners. However, those were the first goals Guardiola's men have scored in the second half of any Premier League game in 2026.City blew a 2-0 first half lead to draw 2-2 against Tottenham the week before and were again outplayed for large parts of the second half at Anfield after dominating the first 45 minutes. Victory over Fulham Wednesday will cut the gap at the top down to three points for 24 hours at least before Arsenal visit Brentford.But Guardiola said talk of a title race is premature until City iron out their inconsistency. "We have to be better and to be closer to make the first half in Anfield and not the second," Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference."What is the reason why in the second half still we are dropping our performance? Not (whether the gap is) three, four, five, six points because if we don't do that, we will not win. Maybe not against Fulham, maybe it'll be against Newcastle or maybe in the next game at Leeds."City's quest to win silverware in four different competitions was boosted by the return of Ruben Dias as a second half substitute against Liverpool. But in the absence of centre-backs Dias and Josko Gvardiola through injury, Abdukodir Khusanov has taken his chance for more first-team opportunities.Guardiola hailed the improvement of the young Uzbek defender, who arrived in Manchester just over a year ago with little English and took time to adapt. "I admit he doesn't speak like William Shakespeare, but he's getting better and better," added Guardiola."He's so, so fast. To recover that position is one of his attributes. But not just that he's intelligent. Normally when a player has this physicality he doesn't use what's going on (in his head) and it's always his physical condition, and he has both. That's why on the ball he's getting better. That's why he's encouraged to improve and he can improve. At that age and he's open minded and I said recently, 'City have a player in central defence for many, many years'."Guardiola said it does not help to pay attention to title race speculation before every game, and he focuses entirely on beating his ‌next opponents. "Every time over the past ⁠weeks and months when I go before the game for an interview, (it's) ‍always if you lose you are losing everything and are going to disappear from the planet earth and stuff," Guardiola said. "So what I am saying is what do you have to do to beat Fulham?"City, seeking their seventh English top-flight title in Guardiola's decade-long tenure, ‌have won only two of their last seven league games, allowing Arsenal to pull further ahead with four wins in the same period. "The distance is not ‍huge but considering how Arsenal ⁠is doing, six ‌points is a lot. Next game against a team like (Fulham) who every year is better and better, so we'll see," Guardiola said.City had to dig deep to snatch a 5-4 win at Fulham in December, and Guardiola praised the way the London side have improved under Marco Silva since earning their promotion to the Premier League in 2022."The movements they do... they're really good. The patterns and the quality they have, the composure of the play, the speed they have. Marco is one of ​the top, top, top managers ‌I face. Destined to be one of the top in a few years for sure," Guardiola ⁠said. 

Rodri and Jeremy Doku could both be involved when Manchester City travel to Sunderland on New Year's Day, manager Pep Guardiola said. A key playmaker at the Etihad when fit, Rodri was an unused substitute in Saturday's Premier League win over Nottingham Forest following his latest injury setback.The Spaniard missed most of last season with a severe knee problem and his attempts at returning to action have been hampered by several issues, with the latest a hamstring complaint. Doku, a winger who enjoyed a fine start to the season, has been sidelined for the past four games with a calf injury.Their returns could be valuable to a City side who are set to be without several players during a congested January schedule. City, including a trip to Tottenham on February 1, face 10 games in the space of 32 days over four competitions. John Stones, Oscar Bobb and Mateo Kovacic are also out injured while Rayan Ait-Nouri and Omar Marmoush are at the Africa Cup of Nations."Rodri has come back," Guardiola told a pre-match press conference. "Maybe he can play a few minutes. I'm looking forward to it. Doku maybe, John and Oscar no."Guardiola added: "In terms of squad we are not in our best right now for this tight schedule. It's right lately we have played with the same guys but with the schedule we have. We will arrive back (from Sunderland) at 2am or 3am and two days later we have Chelsea and then after that we have Brighton – really tough opponents. We don't have many players to rotate."City, who will begin 2026 five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal but with a game in hand, could strengthen their squad during the January transfer window. Guardiola, however, refused to be drawn on reports linking the club with Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo."I don't have any news about anything right now," said the City boss, who also refused to be drawn on rumours Bobb could leave. "The winter transfer window is completely closed right now. So, Sunderland..."Sunderland are seventh in the table having made an impressive return to the top flight following last season's promotion. City defeated the Black Cats 3-0 at the Etihad on December 6 but Guardiola expects a difficult encounter at the Stadium of Light."They are so tough," he said. "The crowd is unbelievable. They have beaten Newcastle. Arsenal and Aston Villa could not win there. "They have had really good results. It will be completely different there but at the same time we are ready." 

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso faces mounting pressure ahead of today's Champions League group-stage meeting against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, but the Spaniard was confident the team could turn their poor form around.Sunday's 2-0 loss to Celta Vigo, in which Real were reduced to nine players after defenders Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras were sent off, left the club second in LaLiga with 36 points, four behind leaders Barcelona.Adding to Alonso's challenges, Madrid could be without as many as eight key players, including top-scorer Kylian Mbappe, who missed training on Tuesday with a muscle injury."Football can change quickly... for good or for bad," Alonso told a press conference Tuesday. "After the Celta match, we've already drawn our conclusions."Now it's just City in our minds. It's the Champions League, we're at the Bernabeu. It will be different because of the energy that's created. That's what's on our minds, what's ahead of us."Asked whether his job could be at risk if Real falter against City, Alonso remained defiant."When you coach Real Madrid, you have to be prepared for situations like this. We are a team, we are all united," he said."To reverse the disappointment, which is normal, all we're thinking about now is City."Mbappe's absence would be a significant blow for Alonso's team, with the Frenchman leading both the LaLiga and Champions League scoring charts this season.The 26-year-old joins an already packed injury list that includes Dani Carvajal, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, David Alaba, Ferland Mendy and Eduardo Camavinga.Wednesday's clash will be the 13th meeting between the clubs in the past decade, a rivalry that has intensified as Real and City combined to claim three of the last four Champions League titles.Real won the competition in 2022 and 2024, beating City en route to both titles, while the English side lifted their maiden Champions League trophy in 2023 after overcoming the Spanish club in the semi-finals that year.Despite a disappointing run in recent weeks, with two victories in their last seven matches across all competitions, Alonso remained optimistic."We're all in this together. United. Convinced that this is an opportunity. We need to have the energy to connect with the Bernabeu. If that happens, we have a chance to win," he said."In football, you have to adapt and learn. Some days are good, others are not," he added. "But we are making progress with every match. Good thing we have a challenge tomorrow. The best way to move forward is to face it. It's a challenge that we must rise to."Real are fifth in the Champions League standings on 12 points, three behind leaders Arsenal. City are ninth on 10 points, chasing a top-eight finish that would secure direct qualification to the last 16. 

Pep Guardiola acknowledged that Manchester City are not considered among the favourites to win the Champions League ahead of their opening game against Napoli Thursday.City have regularly reached the sharp end of Europe's top club competition in recent years, winning the trophy for the first time in 2023. They suffered a painful early exit last season, losing to 15-time champions Madrid in a two-legged play-off with a place in the knockout stages at stake.According to the bookmakers Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain are all considered more likely winners of this season's Champions League. Guardiola was asked at his pre-match press conference whether he saw City as contenders."Apparently, we are not," he said. "And (we must) just enjoy the moment, the journey. We are happy to be here. In the past, we have been. We just won once, so that is a lot of difficulty. (We are) Just focusing tomorrow on the game we have to play, starting this competition well."City are intent on making their mark after finishing last season without a trophy for the first time in eight years. They started the Premier League season slowly, with two defeats in their first three games, but bounced back to crush Manchester United 3-0 on Sunday.Guardiola has rebuilt his squad over the past two transfer windows, with a clutch of long-serving players exiting the club, including Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson. Thursday's game against the Italian champions will feature an emotionally charged return to the Etihad for De Bruyne, who joined Napoli in June after a 10-year trophy-laden stint in Manchester.Guardiola said he was looking forward to seeing the midfielder but only "after the game" The City boss said it was no surprise that De Bruyne had settled quickly in Italy."The players in that level don't need much time to adapt and perform well," he said, praising his former player's "talent and vision".City's new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma also spoke to reporters on the eve of the match against Napoli, underlining that the club had been his top choice. The Italy international won the Champions League with PSG in May but was deemed surplus to requirements by the French club, completing a £26mn deadline-day switch to City. "My desire was to come here," said Donnarumma, who has replaced Ederson as first-choice goalkeeper. "That was my first and only option, the only thing I wanted."Injured Yamal ruled out of Barca's trip to NewcastleBarcelona forward Lamine Yamal will miss Thursday's visit to Newcastle United in the Champions League with a groin injury, the Spanish club said when they announced the squad that had travelled for their league phase opener at St James' Park.Yamal suffered the injury while on international duty with Spain and Barca boss Hansi Flick slammed the national team for not taking better care of the 18-year-old, who also missed the weekend LaLiga win over Valencia.Apart from Yamal, who started the season strongly with two goals and two assists in LaLiga, Barcelona said on Wednesday that Alejandro Balde and Gavi are also out along with long-term absentee Marc-Andre ter Stegen but Frenkie de Jong is available. Barca were knocked out in the semi-finals last term while Newcastle are back in the Champions League after failing to qualify for last season's competition.
