Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro said his side had "fought like lions" in their 1-0 World Cup defeat at the hands of France on Saturday. "France couldn't find the answers, and it took a bit of individual skill and a penalty given by VAR to make the difference which their football had not been able to do," Alfaro said after the game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Kylian Mbappe's 70th-minute spot-kick finally broke the deadlock in the last-16 tie and took France through to a quarter-final against Morocco, as Paraguay go home. The South American nation were appearing at the World Cup for the first time since 2010 and had been hoping to match their run to the quarter-finals at that tournament, which remains best ever showing. The tactics they employed to try to unsettle their opponents irritated France forward Kylian Mbappe, while coach Didier Deschamps accused Paraguay of issuing verbal insults. But Alfaro insisted his men had "fought like lions out on the pitch". He added: "It took us 16 years to get back to a World Cup, while Mbappe won the World Cup the first time he played in it, got to the final in his second and now is fighting to be the top scorer." It remains the case that Paraguay's only victories in the knockout stages of the World Cup have come in penalty shoot-outs -- including against Germany in Boston in the last 32. "We worked so hard to get a different result but I will leave here with the knowledge that we came to compete and we did compete," added Alfaro, who added that his team were in tears of disappointment in the dressing room after the match. "I have no doubt that this World Cup has made us all better, although I am sad to go out because I hoped we might go further."bur-gfe/as/gj

Paraguay stunned four-time world champions Germany 4-3 on penalties on Monday to advance to the World Cup round of 16 in one of the biggest upsets in the competition's history, after the teams were tied 1-1 over 120 minutes.Jose Canale hit the decisive penalty to give the underdogs a memorable victory and spark wild celebrations, as they advanced to the next round where they ⁠will face either title contenders France or Sweden in the last 16.The Germans saw Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah fail to score from the spot before Canale, after two misses by the ⁠South Americans, kept his composure to seal their win.For the Germans, who had a Tah header disallowed in extra time, it was a bitter defeat and the first time they lost a penalty shootout at a World Cup."We should not be blaming the referee or the penalty shootout today," Germany captain Joshua Kimmich said. "If you cannot beat Paraguay over 120 minutes then you are deservedly eliminated. You should not depend on the opponents' luck or no luck. You should have the quality in the squad to clearly beat this opponent."It was the biggest win at the tournament for the South Americans, who reached the quarter-finals in 2010 and had not qualified since, while Germany's international reputation is now in tatters after consecutive World Cup group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022."I think the feeling we have is difficult to explain," a beaming Paraguay captain Gustavo Gomez said. "I'm very proud ⁠of my teammates and of this group. Today was a match in which we had to be Paraguay more than ever.""I think deep down Germany knew that if they wanted to beat us, they would have to sweat blood, because we were going to make defeat very, very expensive for them," he said.Germany's Julian Nagelsmann, who at the age of 38 became the youngest coach in a World Cup knockout stage in 40 years, will now be under massive pressure once he returns home after yet another World Cup debacle."I am disappointed. It was just not enough to beat this opponent," said Nagelsmann, who had publicly set Germany the goal of winning a fifth World Cup. "The opponent scored once and we did not defend very well. We lost control of possession. We tried a lot of things but we should have scored earlier."If you are eliminated by Paraguay you are just not a first-class football team. I am very disappointed." ATTACKING START Nagelsmann opted for an attacking lineup, giving his team's top ⁠scorer in the tournament, Deniz Undav, his first start. The forward, who had three goals and two assists in the group ⁠stage, threatened early on with a curled shot as ⁠the Germans controlled possession.While spending most of the time without the ball, Paraguay were content to soak up the pressure as Germany attempted every possible route to their opponents' goal but had no single effort on target in the entire first half.By the 35th minute Germany had completed 244 passes to Paraguay's 31 but had not managed to come any closer to breaking the deadlock.Executing their game plan to perfection, the South Americans, with Miguel Almiron back in the side after his suspension, stunned the favourites with a quick move down the right before Enciso powered home his header to score his country's first-ever goal in the knockout stage of a World Cup.The small pockets of Paraguay fans, completely outnumbered by the white-clad Germany supporters, exploded with joy, pounding their drums as silence fell across large swathes of the stands.Frustration was visible among the Germany players as their dominance proved unprecedented - no team had ever completed 253 more passes than their opponents in a World Cup first half and still gone in behind at halftime.They hit back nine minutes after the restart with Florian Wirtz floating a cross into the box and Havertz levelling with a glancing header. They thought they had snatched a winner in the 102nd minute when Tah headed in a corner at the far post but after a lengthy VAR review the goal was disallowed for a foul on the keeper.

The Australians were miffed that some pundits, including a few former U.S. national team players, mockingly gave them zero chance to stay on the field in the second Group D match against the Americans in Seattle on Friday.Disregard the Aussies' 2-0 win over favored Turkey in their first match. How could they match ‌up against a superior U.S. squad, which opened with a 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay?Oh, the Aussies ​talked about being fired up and ready ‌to shove all those derisive comments down the collective American throats.They shouldn't have taken it ‌personally because not too ⁠many months ago, several ex-USMNT players ‌questioned if Mauricio Pochettino was the right choice to ‌lead their team and questioned the heart and desire of a group that would eventually wear the red, white ⁠and blue into the World Cup.Well, look at Pochettino and his Band of Brothers now. A workmanlike 2-0 victory over a physical but overmatched Australia before another raucous and adoring crowd and millions more on TV who are hopping on the bandwagon. POCHETTINO GAMBLED AND WONPochettino gambled and won when he started Ricardo Pepi for the injured star Christian Pulisic. Pepi plays further up the field than Pulisic and provided a two-striker look with Folarin Balogun. Working with their teammates, especially Weston McKennie, the lumberjack Aussie backline couldn't handle the early attacking prowess of the U.S.As was the case ​against Paraguay, the first U.S. goal came via an own goal when Cameron Burgess knocked in a cross from Balogun intended for Pepi in the 11th minute.Score one for Pochettino, but it was more than his lineup choices that has America getting behind this ‌team, which clinched first place in ⁠Group D and an easier path ​to the quarterfinals when Paraguay beat Turkey 1-0 later on Friday.The U.S. players have been selfless ​in doing whatever it takes to win and, in the process, handling the pressure of being billed as the "Golden Generation" that will elevate the sport in this country.McKennie was sensational in linking the backs to the midfield and defender Chris Richards provided calmness when the Aussies mounted a push. NASTY HEAD-ON COLLISIONAnd let's not forget the resilience of Alex Freeman, who moments before challenging goalkeeper Patrick Beach to nod the ball across the line in the 43rd minute for the all-important insurance goal, was involved in a nasty head-on-head collision with Australia's Paul Okon-Engstler.His score was crucial because it became a tense second half as they protected the lead. If there's anything to criticize about a shutout, especially in the World Cup, it's that the U.S. had too many defensive lapses and ‌there was a sense of unease from the hour ‌mark to around the 80th minute, when ⁠many had to be thinking, "Man, if Australia had any quality in their attack, we'd be in trouble."They didn't and the U.S. ⁠put on a clinic in stoppage time ⁠on how to finish out a match.Yet, it was a good test for the Americans. They haven't faced any adversity -- they've yet to trail -- and are maturing before our eyes. THE U.S. HAD RIGHT BALANCEWhen it got feisty late, the U.S. players had the right balance of pushback while knowing when to step away and play another day.Months ago, it seemed like Pochettino's many player changes during roster evaluation made it seem impossible for him to assemble a cohesive team in time for the World Cup.But he ​was adamant in sticking to the process and repeatedly quoted a phrase from Kurt Russell's portrayal of 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey coach Herb Brooks in the movie "Miracle": "I'm not looking for the best players; I'm looking for the right ones."Watching the likes of Tyler Adams, Sergino Dest, Malik Tillman and others, Pochettino has the best of both worlds.It's only two matches, but with advancement to the knockout stage secured, Pulisic will be given as much time as needed to recover from his calf injury and could be rested again if necessary in the final group match vs. Turkey on Thursday.He'll be needed eventually because sterner tests are ahead, but with the home support and confidence building match by match, the ‌expectations for a special summer are ​growing.After the match in Seattle, the fans joined in singing John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads."If the U.S. continues their march, could Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" be next on the playlist?  

President Donald Trump will not be in attendance when the United States opens its World Cup competition against Paraguay on Friday in ‌Inglewood, California.That was confirmed by Andrew ​Giuliani, the CEO ‌of the World Cup task force, ‌in an interview ⁠with a ‌radio station in the ‌United Kingdom."He's not going to end up attending ⁠the opening game," Giuliani told TalkSport on Thursday. "As we've said, his scheduling is tight. But I know he's going to be engaged throughout this World Cup.He needs to be in Washington, D.C., later in the weekend. He is ​hosting the UFC Freedom 250 at the White House on Sunday, his 80th birthday.While it is uncommon for ‌a head of state ⁠from a ​host country to miss the nation's World ​Cup opener, it is not unprecedented. President Claudia Sheinbaum of co-host Mexico was not in attendance on Thursday when her nation defeated South Africa 2-0. The Mexican government held a contest to give away Sheinbaum's seat.The U.S. delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, and ‌Secretary of Homeland Security ‌Markwayne Mullin. The State ⁠Department confirmed their attendance in a news ⁠release earlier this week.Giuliani, ⁠the son of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, said he wasn't sure when Trump would make an appearance."Having known President Trump for now 30 years, what I can tell you is: expect the ​unexpected. Always expect a cliffhanger with him," Giuliani said. "Throughout the course of this tournament, it wouldn't surprise me if we see him engage more and more with the World Cup."A sports fan, Trump has attended several big events while president, including Game 3 of the NBA Finals at ‌Madison Square ​Garden earlier this week. He was met with a chorus of boos.
