Akshay Bhatia produced a dazzling charge down the stretch to reel in Daniel Berger before snatching victory in a playoff at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida on Sunday.A gripping final-day duel at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando ended with Bhatia pocketing the third PGA Tour title of his career - all via playoffs -- on the first sudden death hole.Bhatia finished with a closing three-under-par 69, to finish tied on 15 under alongside Berger, who shot a final-round two-under-par 70 for an aggregate 273.The 24-year-old Bhatia had forced the playoff with an electrifying birdie spree over the back nine after trailing Berger by four shots at the turn.Bhatia had drifted off the pace with a bogey five on the par-four ninth, but responded to that setback with a brilliant run of four straight birdies to slice into Berger's lead.The highlight of that charge was a superb 57-foot birdie putt on the 11th, which he followed with birdies on the 12th and 13th.Berger's lead shrank to one shot after a bogey on the 13th, but he increased his lead to two strokes with three holes to play after Bhatia bogeyed the 15th.Once again though Bhatia conjured a response, this time with an eagle three on the par-five 16th, when he drilled his second shot to just under four feet for a simple tap in.Berger responded with a birdie and remained one shot clear with two to play, but his advantage evaporated with a bogey on 17 to leave it all square going to the last.A pair of pars sent it to a playoff and Bhatia immediately seized the initiative, following up a perfect tee shot to the middle of the fairway with a second to the center of the green.Berger subsequently three-putted for bogey while Bhatia coolly completed a par to seal victory.Bhatia said his bogey on the ninth had been the catalyst for his charge after the turn."I missed that putt on nine, that was just a lack of focus. And then I just played with some anger for those couple holes," he said."The putt on 11 was a huge bonus for me. That really switched my momentum."Daniel played amazing. This game is so crazy, it's been crazy for these last couple weeks ... you just never know what can happen in this game," he added.Berger, who had been chasing a wire-to-wire victory after leading after each of the opening three rounds, took positives from his late defeat."I'm proud of myself," he said. "Obviously it didn't go the way I wanted it to, but at the start of the week if you told me I would have a chance on the 18th hole to win Bay Hill, I would be ecstatic with that."So a lot of positives, a lot of things to learn from."Sweden's Ludvig Aberg finished tied for third alongside Cameron Young, three shots behind Bhatia and Berger on 12 under.Collin Morikawa was fifth on 11 under after a closing 70, while Shaith Theegala, Russell Henley and Australia's Min Woo Lee were a further shot back on 10 under in a tie for sixth.Leading final-round scores(x-won at first playoff hole, USA unless noted, par 72):273 - x-Akshay Bhatia 70-66-68-69, Daniel Berger 63-68-72-70276 - Ludvic Aberg (SWE) 66-71-72-67, Cameron Young 67-73-67-69277 - Collin Morikawa 66-71-70-70278 - Sahith Theegala 70-67-75-66, Russell Henley 70-69-71-68, Min Woo Lee (AUS) 69-71-68-70280 - Rickie Fowler 69-69-72-70, Harry Hall (ENG) 73-69-68-70 

Jacob Bridgeman closed in on a first US PGA Tour title on Saturday, firing an impressive seven-under par 64 to take a six-stroke lead over world number two Rory McIlroy heading into the final round of the Genesis Invitational.Bridgeman, who played the iconic Riviera Country Club course for the first time on Wednesday, made his way around like an old hand, matching the tournament's 54-hole record with a 19-under par total of 194."It was fun and easy," Bridgeman said. "Kind of the best that the golf world ever gets."The 26-year-old American, who is chasing his first PGA Tour title, shared a one-shot overnight lead and was up by three after three birdies in his first four holes.He picked up four strokes in the space of three holes to pull away for good.After rolling in a 12-foot birdie at the 10th he eagled the par-five 11th - where he landed his 259-yard approach a foot from the pin. He drilled an 11-foot birdie putt at the 12th."I had to make an adjustment mid-round," he said. "At the beginning I kind of got off to a nice start, had a bunch of short putts and didn't really have any 15-footers where the speed matters."Then kind of in the middle of my round I hit a few (putts) way too hard and told my caddie, I've got to hit those a little softer, they're not taking a break. After that I feel like I hit a lot of good putts."McIlroy, meanwhile, could never find the right touch on Riviera's tricky greens, finishing with just three birdies and a bogey in his two-under 69 for 200.The Northern Ireland star, who completed his career Grand Slam at the Masters last year, admitted to some frustration as he found himself unable to put pressure on Bridgeman.'Really, really difficult'"The greens got really fast there at the end of the day," McIlroy said. "You're grinding over three-footers and all of a sudden you get one that you think you can have a bit of a run at and if you hit it a little bit too hard ...""I found the greens really, really difficult today," added McIlroy, whose difficulties were epitomized at the par-five 17th, where he was on the green in two but ultimately missed a four and a half-foot birdie putt.McIlroy said he'd aim for a fast start on Sunday."I'm hitting the ball well. If I can keep driving it like that, putting the ball in the fairway, just giving myself chances and go from there -- that's all I can really do," said McIlroy, who was one stroke in front of South African Aldrich Potgieter.The 21-year-old Potgieter, who claimed his lone PGA Tour title to date at the Rocket Classic in Detroit last year, had an eagle and six birdies in his six-under 65 and at 12-under was one clear of England's Aaron Rai, who shot a 66.World number one Scottie Scheffler, who pushed his streak of PGA Tour cuts made to 68 without a stroke to spare after an erratic two days, climbed the leaderboard with a five-under 66 for five-under 208.Scheffler, who said this week he has a "weird" relationship with Riviera, made four of his six birdies on the back nine, shaking off his lone bogey with the help of solid putting."At times it still felt weird," he said. "The golf course is gettable in the morning, the greens are fresher. So I was able to hole a few putts, which is key."
