There will be no Ashes matches in the north of England when Australia arrive for the 2027 edition of Test cricket's oldest rivalry.Headingley in Leeds and Manchester's Old Trafford have both staged some of the most dramatic clashes in the long history of Ashes cricket.Don Bradman, arguably cricket's greatest batsman, scored two triple centuries at Headingley during the 1930s.Both grounds played host to remarkable individual feats by England hero Ian Botham during the 1981 Ashes series.Headingley was also the venue for a remarkable unbeaten century by England's Ben Stokes in a one-wicket win during the 2019 series.But both grounds have been left off the schedule for the 2027 Ashes - a decision criticised by new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, then the mayor of Greater Manchester - when it was announced in 2023.Former England captain Michael Atherton, responding to Thursday's announcement by the England and Wales Cricket Board of the fixture list for next year's Ashes, wrote in The Times: "What a time to be snubbing the north."Just as a professional northerner (Burnham) moves into No 10 (Downing Street), and promises to shift some of the machinery of government to the north, the ECB has announced that there will be no men's Ashes Test match next year in the region," added Atherton.All five matches will be restricted to the Midlands and south of England.Hampshire's Rose Bowl, near Southampton, will stage its first Ashes Test from July 21 - the fourth of the series. It will become the 10th ground in the United Kingdom to stage a men's Ashes Test.The series will start at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on June 18, with Lord's - as is traditional -staging the second Test on June 30 and Edgbaston in Birmingham the third on July 8.The Ashes will conclude at the Oval in south London from July 29.Old Trafford and Headingley are both set to stage Ashes Tests in 2031.Australia triumphed 4-1 on home soil during the 2025/26 Ashes. The last Ashes series in England ended in a 2-2 draw in 2023.England's last Ashes series success was a 3-2 home victory in 2015.England are also due to play a one-off Test against Bangladesh at Lord's from May 28.The 2027 World Test Championship final will be held at the Oval starting on June 9, the second time the venue has hosted the title match.England will also play 10 one-day internationals - five each at home to New Zealand and Pakistan - as part of their preparations for the 2027 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.  

Manchester United have secured the majority of the land needed to build their proposed new 100,000-capacity stadium.United announced on Monday that they had acquired a 25-acre (10 hectare) site close to their current Old Trafford home.The land purchase is a major step forward in United's plans to build Britain's biggest sporting arena.The triangular-shaped plot 350 metres to the north west of Old Trafford means adjacent land owned by Freightliner will not be required.The location of the nearby freight terminal had previously been a complicating factor.Collette Roche, chief executive of the new stadium development, said: "Today's news highlights the progress we're making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development."Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans."Securing the right land for our new home has been absolutely critical and the land we've acquired gives us the stage to deliver a truly world-class stadium that honours our past and is ready for our future."United first unveiled plans for their ambitious £2 billion ($2.6 billion) stadium in 2025.The venue will be the centre-piece of a wider 370-acre regeneration project featuring 15,000 new homes and creating 48,000 new jobs locally and 90,000 nationally.A master-plan for the Old Trafford regeneration is scheduled to be unveiled on July 9.United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said it was a "no-brainer" to rebuild Old Trafford after buying a stake in the club in 2024.United have played at Old Trafford for 115 years but the 74,000-capacity stadium has fallen into disrepair in recent years.  

Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract at Manchester United that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031, bringing an end to months of uncertainty over his future.The 21-year-old, who joined United's academy in 2014, has already made 98 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals, including in the FA Cup final win against Manchester City in 2024.Mainoo fell out of favour under former boss Ruben Amorim and had a request to leave on loan in August rejected.He started just one game all season - the League Cup loss to Grimsby on penalties - under the Portuguese, who was sacked in January.That led to growing speculation that the future of the boyhood United fan could lie away from Old Trafford.But Mainoo has been rejuvenated under Michael Carrick, who was appointed as head coach until the end of the season after Amorim was fired.The midfielder has started all but one game since then, playing a key role as United have climbed to third in the Premier League, all but securing a return to the Champions League."Manchester United has always been my home - this special club means everything to my family," said Mainoo."I have grown up seeing the impact that our club has on our city, and I relish the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt."He added: "We can all feel the momentum building inside the club. I am determined to step up and play my role in helping Manchester United to regularly fight for major trophies in the years ahead."Jason Wilcox, United's director of football, hailed Mainoo as one of the most "naturally gifted young footballers in the world"."His technical ability, dedicated professionalism and humble personality make him the perfect role model for our young players and a true credit to our outstanding academy system," he said."We are delighted that Kobbie has extended his stay here and have full confidence that he will develop into one of the best players in the world, ready to play a pivotal role in a Manchester United team challenging for the biggest honours."Mainoo has also regained his place in the England set-up under Thomas Tuchel, featuring in friendlies in March against Uruguay and Japan. 

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has challenged Paul Scholes to come to his house after the Old Trafford legend mocked the Argentine's height.Scholes and former United team-mate Nicky Butt poked fun at Martinez's chances of winning his duel with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in Saturday's derby.Butt joked the striker "would pick Martinez up and run with him" like a "dad after school running down the road with a little toddler" before Scholes laughed and said that "he'd score then throw him in the net".But in their first game under interim boss Michael Carrick, United restricted City to just one shot on target as Martinez kept Haaland in check during the 2-0 victory.When Scholes' comment about Haaland was put to Martinez, he said: "He can say whatever he wants. I told him already if he wants to say something to me, he can come to wherever he wants. To my house, wherever. I don't care."And I think, for me, I respect the relations when they want to help the club because everyone can talk on the television, but when you see them here face-to-face no-one says anything in your face."So, for me, I don't really care what they say. I just put focus on my performance, the performance of the team and I give everything to this club until my last day."Asked if criticism from the likes of Scholes and Butt gave him extra motivation, Martinez said: "No, no, nothing. It doesn't give me anything. My motivation is my family. That's it."Having seen Martinez's blast, Scholes didn't back down.Posting, on Instagram on Sunday, the former England midfielder: "Someone's had a good game, was really happy for you. Tea, no sugar please!"United's first win since Boxing Day was a much-needed boost after Ruben Amorim's recent sacking.Martinez appears not be have been a fan of Amorim, judging by his pointed assessment of Carrick's immediate impact."So different, so different. Different mentality, different guy," he said."He knows what it really means, this club. He sent us that message that he played here for a long, long time. He won everything."He's a big legend. He wants to help the club and I think we were in a tough situation and today was the best moment to change that."United still have a chance to salvage their troubled campaign by qualifying for next season's Champions League.They sit in fifth place, one point behind Liverpool, and Martinez expects Carrick will make a major difference to their fortunes."When you have a coach like Michael Carrick, who really knows, who really can share with you the energy of the club and what it means, it's so different," Martinez said. 

Manchester United interim coach Darren Fletcher said Tuesday he did not think he would manage the club in his “wildest dreams” as he prepares for his first game following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese was axed on Monday after 14 months at Old Trafford after an explosive post-match interview following his team’s 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday. Under-18s coach and former United player Fletcher was put in charge for today’s match at Burnley and faced the press for the first time Tuesday. The former Scotland international is expected to remain in place until the club appoints a caretaker boss, with United planning to name Amorim’s permanent successor at the end of the season. Fletcher, 41, said the past 24 hours at Old Trafford had been “surreal”. “It’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team,” he said. “I don’t even think it was in my wildest dreams that that was something that could potentially happen, even thinking about playing for the club and stuff like that. But to lead out the team is an amazing honour and something I am really proud to do. It’s not (happened) in the circumstances that I expected it to happen so that obviously is something that doesn’t sit quite easy with me, but I just have to think I’ve got a job to do and I’ve got to lead the team tomorrow and think of the great honour and pride in doing that.” Fletcher said conversations with the club’s hierarchy had focused on today’s game against struggling Burnley and they would speak again after the match. Fletcher, United’s technical director between 2021 and 2024, was asked whether he wanted to try to earn the manager’s job on a full-time basis. “Honestly it’s not something I’ve thought about,” he said. “I’m focusing on Burnley. I think that discussion is for after the game. There has been that much going on and it has all happened so quickly that all my concentration, efforts and thoughts have gone into Burnley.” 

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes told Portuguese media the Premier League club had wanted to sell him this summer after receiving interest from Saudi Arabia.But the 31-year-old claimed manager Ruben Amorim still had him in his plans and that convinced him to stay at Old Trafford."My passion and empathy for the club were the same, but there comes a point where money becomes more important to them than you," Fernandes told Canal 11, a channel owned by the Portuguese Football Federation, on Monday."The club wanted me to leave. I said it to the directors and I think they didn't have the courage to make that decision because the coach wanted me."But if I had said I wanted to leave, even if the coach wanted me to stay, the club would have let me go."Fernandes, who has 103 goals in 307 appearances for Man Utd in all competitions since arriving in 2020, was also reportedly hurt by the club hierarchy's willingness to part ways with him."The feeling I got from the club was, 'if you leave, it's not so bad for us'. That hurt me a little," he said, according to comments reported on the website of Portuguese sports daily A Bola.The playmaker said he had considered a move to Saudi Arabia, following in the footsteps of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo who made the move to the kingdom in 2023 after his acrimonious departure from Old Trafford.
