Destructive Abhishek 113 leads India to series win over New Zealand

An aggressive partnership by Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi propelled India to a six-wicket win and a series victory over New Zealand in Wellington on Tuesday.India sewed up the five-match series with two games to spare, chasing down New Zealand's total of 198 in just 13.2 overs, Abhishek blasting 113 and Sooryavanshi 45.The opening pair combined for a 133-run partnership in just 7.1 overs, obliterating the New Zealand bowling attack with one of the most destructive partnerships in T20 history.The first Jacob Duffy over went for 26 runs, and the openers never let up.Abhishek hit nine fours and 11 sixes in his 38-ball knock, receiving a standing ovation when he eventually fell to the bowling of Kyle Jamieson.By that stage, India had reached 178-2 after just 10 overs."Key was pretty simple, that me and Vaibhav enjoy our time," Abhishek said of their partnership."When we were fielding, we saw there was some extra bounce. Vaibhav started off well, and we took the momentum from there."Sooryavanshi was promoted to open alongside Abhishek after batting at number three in the second T20, hitting four fours and four sixes in his 19-ball innings."Getting 100 in five overs, have not seen that before at the international level," India captain Shreyas Iyer said."Credit where it is due, the way they played is exceptional."India won the toss for the third time in three matches and again elected to bowl.Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh extracted prodigious seam from the pitch, beating the outside edge of New Zealand openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen.Seifert was removed top-edging Singh for two, before Daryl Mitchell joined Allen and combined for an 86-run partnership.Mitchell was quick to assess the conditions and moved around the crease in order to counteract the seam movement.He seized on any shorter bowling with powerful strikes to the short square boundaries, hitting five fours and five sixes on his way to 89 from 52 balls.Allen made 40 from 25 balls before departing, and Mitchell found another powerful partner in Bevon Jacobs who hit an unbeaten 39 from 23 deliveries.The fourth T20 is at Auckland's Eden Park on Friday. Brief ScoreIndia 199 for 4 in 13.2 overs (Abhishek 113, Sooryavanshi 45, Jamieson 2-45) beat New Zealand 198 for 3 (Mitchell 89*, Allen 40) by six wickets.

India eye third successive win over New Zealand

World champions India will be seeking their third successive win on Tuesday when they face New Zealand in the third T20 international of the five-match series at Sky Stadium in Wellington. India currently lead the series 2–0 after winning the opening two matches in Christchurch. In the first T20I on October 22, India successfully chased down New Zealand's total of 225/4 with four wickets and two balls to spare, driven by Sanju Samson’s 67. In the second T20I on October 24, they restricted New Zealand to 180/5 before sealing another four-wicket win with one ball remaining, led by Tilak Varma’s 51. With a 2–0 lead, India will enter the Wellington fixture aiming for an unassailable series victory. New Zealand, meanwhile, must win to keep the series alive. New Zealand pacers Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry will both miss the third T20I, it was confirmed on Sunday. Ferguson is sitting out this match before returning for the final two games of the series in Auckland and Hamilton, while Henry has been ruled out of the remaining T20Is to prepare for the upcoming ODI series. Tall fast bowler Kyle Jamieson will play his final T20I of the series in Wellington before leaving the squad to play domestic cricket ahead of the ODIs. Blair Tickner has joined the squad for the remainder of the T20I series to bolster the pace attack, and Matt Fisher has been brought in as cover for the Wellington fixture. For India, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan will miss his second consecutive match. He is continuing his recovery from a right adductor strain sustained in the series-opener.

India's Ishan Kishan will not play in the second Twenty20 against New Zealand on Saturday.

New Zealand ditches plans to launch team in Major League Cricket

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said it has ended its bid to launch a Major League Cricket franchise in the 2027 season, stepping back from its partnership with True North Sports Ventures to focus on investing closer to home.NZC announced an agreement with the US company in April last year and had said it was looking at cities including Toronto and Atlanta to base a team in the American league, with the possibility of adding a second team in 2031."There's plenty of potential in the American market, however following further evaluation of the opportunity, we don't think the timing is right for us to be taking this on," NZC CEO Geoff Allott said in a statement."Our immediate priority is ensuring we continue to invest in strengthening cricket in New Zealand and refining the best possible high-performance environment for our players and teams."Allott also confirmed that NZC had not invested any capital in the partnership.MLC, which currently has six teams based in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Texas and Washington DC, has said it plans to expand to 10 teams.

New Zealand plot downfall of 'incredible' India teen Sooryavanshi

New Zealand have done their homework on India prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and expect their home conditions will challenge the 15-year-old sensation in the Twenty20 series starting on Thursday, paceman Jacob Duffy said. Sooryavanshi has lit up world cricket with his power-hitting, breaking a string of records in the Indian Premier League before becoming India's youngest international in the men's game with his debut in the T20 series in England in July. After a slow start against England, the teenage opener became the youngest player to score a half-century in men's international cricket when he clobbered an 18-ball fifty against Zimbabwe. He recently won an Asian Games gold medal in Japan as India swept to the T20 cricket title in Aichi-Nagoya. Duffy said New Zealand had been studying the left-hander in the buildup to the five-match series, which starts at Christchurch's Hagley Oval. "First of all, he's an incredible talent. Obviously, he's taken the IPL by storm and what's amazing, he strikes it so hard but he does it so consistently," Duffy told reporters on Tuesday. "He's striking at 250 (strike-rate) every game and he's not missing out very often. So that's incredible in itself. "I think he played in England, so conditions will be a little bit different for him, so that's obviously one thing for him to be challenged with. "We've certainly had a good scouting session on him and got our plans as to what we want to do to him." India fans will be eager to see what Sooryavanshi can do in New Zealand, where the pitches tend to be seam-friendly. Duffy said he had spoken to Hagley Oval's head groundsman about what to expect from the wicket, hoping that it will not be a batter's paradise like some subcontinent pitches. "He's from Invercargill, so he's promised me a little bit of bounce," said Duffy, who was born in Lumsden, a small town near the South Island city. "As long as it's not Hyderabad, I'm happy." The T20 series is the first part of India's tour, with one-day matches and a two-Test series to follow. Otago bowler Duffy has had a big year, claiming the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal as New Zealand's top player in 2025 and making the final of this year's T20 World Cup in India before winning the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He made his Test debut last year at the age of 31 but missed the mid-year tour of England and the one-off test against Ireland to be home with his wife for the birth of their first child. The absence from the Test setup has made him doubly keen to tear into India with the red ball ahead of a four-Test tour of Australia. "I've played four Tests in my life. I get up for any Test. There's something special about them," he said.

"I do believe that primarily the national team should be coached by a national representative," says Stephen Fleming.

Coach of England's test team should be English, says New Zealander Fleming

Stephen Fleming is the fifth foreign coach to take charge of England's Test team but the New Zealander hopes his successors will be English and says he will seek to develop home-grown coaching talent during his tenure.Fleming was appointed in July to replace compatriot Brendon McCullum, with Australian Trevor Bayliss and Zimbabwe's Duncan Fletcher and Andy Flower the other foreign coaches to have been at the helm of the Test side."I do believe that primarily the national team should be coached by a national representative," Fleming told the BBC in a podcast released on Monday."I'm grateful for the opportunity, but there will be some development in terms of the coaching, and you can see by our staff," added the 53-year-old, who named former England players Marcus Trescothick, Richard Dawson and James Foster among his backroom staff last week.Fleming also highlighted the importance of having a good working relationship with former New Zealand teammate McCullum, who remains in charge of England's limited-overs team, with the Ashes and Cricket World Cup looming next year."At some stage you're going to have to give up some of your key assets. We look at what's coming up, there's a Test series for us against South Africa," he said."We then move to the Ashes, which is obviously the milestone event for the summer next year, and then there's the World Cup."Making sure that the players are as fit as can be for each of those marquee events and that we turn out good sides is going to be a challenge."England visit South Africa in a three-Test series beginning in December.

"I don't think he should play all three formats till the ODI World Cup," Ravi Shastri has said about pace ace Jasprit Bumrah (above).

Shastri urges India to use Bumrah sparingly ahead of ODI World Cup

India should keep Jasprit Bumrah fresh for next year's one-day international World Cup by selecting him mainly for Test cricket and using the pace spearhead sparingly in other formats, former coach Ravi Shastri said. Bumrah was recalled to India's test squad for their two-match series in New Zealand last week, but will not play in the five ODIs and five Twenty20 internationals that precede the Tests. Bumrah's career has been disrupted by back injuries, with the 32-year-old having to undergo surgery in 2023.He was ruled out of a two-Test series against Sri Lanka in August due to a left knee injury, but returned to T20 action at the Asian Games and helped India win gold. "I don't think he should play all three formats till the ODI World Cup," Shastri, who coached India from 2017 to 2021, told Indian media on Sunday. "He should play Test cricket and should play sporadically between one-day internationals and T20 cricket. He also shouldn't be playing the whole lot. "I would rather preserve him for the test matches. That's very important. He becomes a key member of that Indian side. Then he should be used sparingly in the other formats." Following their tour of New Zealand, India will host Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in limited-overs series, before hosting Australia in a five-test series which concludes in February. The 2027 World Cup will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 2 to November 21.

NZ Cricket defends decision to launch domestic T20 competition

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said on Wednesday it had considered a range of expert opinions before deciding to launch a domestic T20 competition amid criticism of its handling of a Deloitte report that favoured joining Australia's Big Bash League.After NZC announced in March that NZ20 would replace the existing Super Smash provincial competition, cricket great Richard Hadlee and former NZC President Lesley Murdoch criticised what they said was a lack of transparency in the process and the body's refusal to share the Deloitte report with stakeholders.NZC Chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon said the governing body should have done a better job explaining the decision when it announced its plans.The Deloitte report was just one of four expert reports considered by the board in making the decision, alongside analyses of community cricket, high-performance pathways and fan engagement, she added."Its analysis favoured exploring the Big Bash opportunity further, for reasons including financial upside and governance, but it also said weighing the options was for the board and encouraged us to continue exploring both options," Puketapu-Lyndon said in a statement.The board had also considered feedback from the country's six Major Associations and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, both of which supported NZ20 ahead of seeking to put a New Zealand team in the established Australian league."When all of that was considered, alongside the board's own due diligence, the board voted unanimously, 7-0, to support NZ20 as the preferred option," said Puketapu-Lyndon.NZC said it would not release the full report, citing confidentiality."This is the biggest change to domestic cricket in a generation, and we know not everyone agrees with it," she said."NZ20 is genuinely aspirational. It has the potential to revolutionise the game of cricket in this country and ensure a sustainable future from the grassroots to the elite."NZ20 organisers had initially planned to launch the six-team competition this summer but NZC postponed the tournament until the 2027-28 home season to allow more time to establish the privately owned franchise league and accommodate the international schedule.

Accomplished all-rounder Rachin Ravindra is in doubt for New Zealand's home series against India following a "freak accident" while filming a commercial shoot, New Zealand Cricket announced on Saturday.Team management said Ravindra dislocated his shoulder while attempting to take a diving catch during a promotional event involving the host broadcaster on Wednesday.A statement said the 26-year-old has been cleared of major structural damage but it is "unclear" if he will play a part in the five-match T20 series starting on October 22.Five one-day internationals and two Tests follow shortly afterwards.New Zealand's performance manager Mike Sandle said Ravindra landed awkwardly on a safety mat during filming."It was a really unfortunate injury," Sandle said."We're gutted for Rachin and our key priority is making sure he recovers well and gets back on the field as soon as he can."As with all commercial shoots involving our players, the activities were agreed in advance by all parties, with appropriate safety measures in place."It was a bit of a freak accident, and we'll continue to review our processes around events like this in the future."Ravindra, a left-handed batsman and spin bowler, has been a mainstay of New Zealand teams across all three formats since his debut in 2021, playing 115 international matches.New Zealand coach Rob Walter said Ravindra's rehabilitation will be carefully managed, ahead of the Indian visit, which is followed by a four-Test series in Australia."With a heavy schedule of Test cricket in the next six months, we don't want to rush Rachin back sooner than we need to," Walter said.
