Lawmakers in Macau, a city under Chinese rule, unanimously approved a ‌bill Thursday that allows court ​proceedings to be ‌held behind closed doors when deemed ‌necessary ⁠to ‌protect national security ‌interests. The city enacted its first national security ⁠law in 2009 and tightened it with amendments in 2023. Last July, leading democrat Au Kam San was arrested for alleged collusion with foreign forces to endanger national security, the first ​known arrest under that law.The new legislation stipulates that judges must refer cases to the ‌city's Committee for ⁠Safeguarding National ​Security if they believe national security ​may be at risk during a public hearing.The committee has the ultimate authority to decide whether the matter pertains to national security and order that hearings be held behind closed doors. Its decisions are final, not subject to appeal or judicial review.The ‌law will ‌take effect a ⁠day after its publication in Macau’s official ⁠gazette.The ⁠Macau government said the approval had demonstrated the successful implementation of the principle of "patriots governing Macau".Unlike in Hong Kong, which saw big social movements challenge Chinese Communist Party ​rule in 2014 and 2019, the democratic opposition in the former Portuguese colony has always existed on the fringes amid tight Chinese control.After Au's arrest last year, rights groups have called for his unconditional release and urged authorities not ‌to suppress peaceful ​criticism. 

Israel said Tuesday it had killed Iran's powerful national security chief, Ali Larijani.Larijani's death would be a massive blow to Iran just weeks after US-Israeli strikes on February 28 killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the republic's long-serving supreme leader, throwing the Middle East into war and upending global markets.Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Larijani was "eliminated last night", although this has not been confirmed by Iran."This morning we eliminated Ali Larijani, the boss of the Revolutionary Guards," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement.An AFP reporter had earlier Tuesday reported blasts in Tehran, and the reported assassination comes as strikes shook countries across the Middle East from the Gulf to Iraq and Lebanon.Iranian authorities called on people to rally nationwide Tuesday to defy enemy "plots" on a night usually marked by Persian new year celebrations.Larijani, 68, has been described as a key pillar in the ruling system, close to the late ayatollah and central to the government's nuclear policy and strategic diplomacy over decades.After the war broke out, he became even more powerful.While the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not been seen in public since he was appointed to replace his slain father, Larijani walked with crowds at a pro-government rally last week in Tehran."He has effectively been the figure in charge of the regime's survival, its regional policy and its defence strategy," David Khalfa, co-founder of the Atlantic Middle East Forum, told AFP."It's the supreme leader who gives the order, but he is the one who carries it out. He is the right-hand man."Shortly after Israel said it had killed him, Larijani's official social media profiles posted a handwritten note by him paying tribute to Iranian sailors killed in a US submarine attack this month.The note was not dated, nor did the post address the claim of his death.Israel also said Tuesday it had killed Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij paramilitary force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, in a strike in Tehran.And it said it had targeted Akram al-Ajouri, head of the military wing of the group Palestinian Islamic Jihad, in a strike in Iran, though he was not confirmed dead. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani met at his office in the Amiri Diwan Wednesday with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani as he visited the country.  They discussed co-operation between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen it, in addition to discussing developments in the region and efforts to reduce tensions and enhance regional security as well as a number of regional and international issues of common concern. **media[415641]**The meeting was attended by His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, His Excellency Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed al Khulaifi, and a number of senior officials. From the Iranian side, it was attended by Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri, Assistant Foreign Minister Alibek, and a number of senior officials.

Iran’s top security official met the Sultan of Oman in Muscat Tuesday, days after a first round of talks there between officials from Washington and Tehran last Friday. Ali Larijani, who heads the Supreme National Security Council, and Sultan Haitham bin Tariq “discussed the latest developments in the Iranian-American negotiations”, the official Oman News Agency said. Larijani also met Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who mediated Friday’s indirect talks between US and Iranian officials, according to photos shared on Larijani’s official Telegram channel. Larijani and Sultan Haitham also explored “ways to reach a balanced and just agreement between the two sides, and emphasised the importance of returning to the table of dialogue and negotiation”. While in Muscat, Larijani warned against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intervening in the talks, according to a post on X. He urged the US to “remain alert” to what he described as Israel’s destructive role ahead of Netanyahu’s trip to Washington, it said. During his trip to Muscat, Larijani also met Mohammed Abdulsalam, the spokesperson for Yemen’s Houthi fighters. Larijani will head to Qatar next, according to Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei. The trip comes after Iran and the US resumed negotiations in Oman on Friday for the first time since the 12-day Iran-Israel war last June, which was briefly joined by the US military. 

His Excellency the Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Sayed met with a number of US officials during an official visit to the US capital, Washington, DC, reports QNA. A statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry confirmed that HE al-Sayed met with US Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler; Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Michael Kratsios; and Special Assistant to the President of the US and Senior Director for Global Supply Chains at the National Security Council David Copley.**media[413949]**During the meetings, they discussed ways to enhance economic and trade relations between the State of Qatar and the US, in addition to a number of topics of mutual interest. HE al-Sayed emphasised the importance of the partnership between the two countries in several fields, including the economy, trade, and investment, noting that this partnership is witnessing continuous development that reflects the strength of bilateral relations and the desire of both sides to further enhance them in the future. 

Her Excellency the Minister of State for International Co-operation Dr Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser al-Misnad has held talks in Doha with the visiting Bangladeshi National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman. The meeting focused on bilateral relations and ways to bolster co-operation, particularly in the humanitarian field. The visit comes as Qatar continues to position itself as a key humanitarian actor in the region and beyond.

Shanmugam, who is currently visiting the country.During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen and enhance them, in addition to a number of topics of mutual interest.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to end collective bargaining with federal unions in some agencies that have "national security missions", the White House said.The order would apply to unions in agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), the Patent and Trademark Office, the National Weather Service and others, the White House said in a statement.Trump also signed a presidential memorandum aimed at preventing federal grant money from going toward political lobbying, the White House said.The memo directs Attorney-General Pam Bondi to investigate whether funds from federal grants "are being illegally used to support lobbying activities and to take appropriate enforcement action", according to a White House fact sheet.
