NBA star Amar'e Stoudemire and longtime coach Glenn "Doc" Rivers were among nine inductees into the Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday.Joey Crawford, an NBA referee for 39 seasons, and veteran coaches Mike D'Antoni and Mark Few were also among those enshrined in ceremonies at the Hall in Springfield, Massachusetts.Women inductees included Candace Parker, Elena Delle Donne and Chamique Holdsclaw, along with the unbeaten 1996 US Olympic gold medal team.Rivers, who resigned as coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in April, has an NBA coaching record of 1,194-866 over 27 seasons with Orlando, Boston, the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia and Milwaukee."It's so funny. Never in my life did I dream that I would be a coach or be good at it," Rivers said. "To be going in the Hall now, my mom had this saying, 'For the good or bad of it, you're right where you're supposed to be.'"He won his only NBA title in 2008 with Boston and was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2000 with Orlando. Rivers also guided the Bucks to the NBA Cup in 2024."This is a celebration that I met a collection of people who helped me get to the Hall of Fame," Rivers said.Six-time NBA All-Star forward Stoudemire, the 2003 Rookie of the Year, averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds a game over 14 seasons with Phoenix, New York, Dallas and Miami.He was a key player in Phoenix's "Seven Seconds or Less" quick-tempo era that was masterminded by D'Antoni, who was enshrined as a contributor and also coached Stoudemire in New York."I loved the challenge. That brings out the best in me," said Stoudemire of his New York days. "Coach D'Antoni was there, so I had a familiar face as coach."Innovator D'Antoni pioneered the fast-tempo offensive strategy through passing. He coached eight seasons in Italy and 16 in the NBA, winning 672 games in stints with Denver, Phoenix, New York, Houston and the Los Angeles Lakers. He won the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2005 and 2017.Parker was a three-time Women's NBA champion and two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player, while Delle Donne was a two-time MVP who led Washington to the 2019 crown.Holdsclaw was a six-time WNBA All-Star who won three US college titles with Tennessee, played 11 WNBA seasons and won 2000 Olympic gold.Crawford served as an NBA referee for 39 seasons from 1977-2016. He officiated 2,561 regular-season NBA games, second-most in league history, and 50 NBA Finals games, working every final from 1986-2015.Gonzaga head coach Few is the winningest active US college basketball coach and has guided the Bulldogs into two national championship games.  

Triple-double king and former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook announced his retirement after 18 seasons on Wednesday via social media."Sometimes you don't even know when you've already watched the end. You had to be there. And now it's over," Westbrook wrote on his social media post.Westbrook's decision was announced during a 3 1/2-minute video. He didn't respond to any of the questions by the narrator but the theme made it clear Westbrook was leaving on his own terms.At the end of the video, the screen read: "The greatest thing he left behind couldn't fit inside a museum. It never had to be said."Westbrook, 37, recorded 209 triple-doubles, including a record 42 during his stellar 2016-17 MVP season. He averaged a career-high 31.6 points to go with 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists that season to become the first player since the legendary Oscar Robertson (1961-62) to average a triple-double over a full season.A nine-time All-Star, he ranks fifth all-time in career assists (10,351) and 14th in scoring (27,176). Westbrook led the NBA in assists three times and scoring twice.In 2021, Westbrook was named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team. He was named All-Star Game MVP in consecutive seasons (2015, 2016) and won a gold medal with the United States in the 2012 Olympics in London.He averaged 20.9 points, 8.0 assists and 6.9 rebounds in 1,301 regular-season games with seven franchises.In 135 career playoff games, Westbrook averaged 22.5 points, 7.1 assists and 6.7 rebounds.Westbrook was selected fourth overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2008 NBA Draft and the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City before his rookie season.Westbrook spent 11 seasons with the franchise and teamed with Kevin Durant to make the Thunder one of the top teams in the NBA. Oklahoma City reached the NBA Finals in 2012 - when James Harden was also on the club - before losing to the Miami Heat.Westbrook made eight of his All-Star appearances with the Thunder. His other was when he averaged 27.2 points for the Houston Rockets in 2019-20, his lone season with the club."Russell Westbrook is the ultimate competitor," Oklahoma City general manager Sam Presti said in a statement. "His internal belief and unbridled fearlessness helped establish the foundation of our organization from day one in 2008 and he elevated the confidence and inspired our community in every year thereafter."Russell will be as successful in his life after basketball as he was during his career because his qualities and gifts transfer. His impact on our community is still felt today, and he is beloved for his devotion as much as his talent."He built a Hall of Fame career not by making statements or simply by breaking records, he did it by showing us all the power of asking one simple question: Why Not?"Westbrook bounced around to five teams over his last six seasons. He averaged 15.2 points and 6.7 rebounds in 64 games (58 starts) for the Sacramento Kings last season.Westbrook was a college star at UCLA before leaving for the NBA after two seasons. He was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. 

The Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most successful teams in NBA history, are being sold to former Disney CEO Bob Iger and investor Joshua Kushner in a deal valued at a reported $12.5bn. The sale announced on Wednesday would mark a record-breaking valuation for a North American sports franchise and comes only about a year after billionaire Mark Walter agreed to buy a controlling interest in the team in a then-record $10bn deal. Kushner is the brother of Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law. "As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world," Kushner and Iger said in a statement. "We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans and the city of Los Angeles." Walter's purchase, reported in June last year, ended the Buss family's 46-year reign over the NBA giants. The Lakers have won 17 NBA championships, second only to the Boston Celtics. The team has been home to some of the league's biggest superstars including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O'Neal and the late Kobe Bryant. LeBron James, the NBA's all-time scoring leader, just left the squad for the Philadelphia 76ers after spending eight years and winning one title with the Lakers. The team is now moving forward with a lineup spearheaded by 27-year-old Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic, who posted on X that he was eager to meet the Lakers' new owners. "I've gotten used to big changes over these last few years, but I know that no matter what, there is no limit to the potential of this iconic franchise," Doncic said in his post. "I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together." The sale still requires approval from the NBA's board of governors. Jeanie Buss had continued to serve as the Lakers' governor after the club was sold to Walter in a deal that further expanded the sports portfolio of his TWG Global holding company. Walter also owns Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers and a stake in English Premier League club Chelsea. His acquisition of the Lakers had marked the end of an era in the NBA, whose modern popularity owes much to the franchise's 1980s heyday. However, Walter is currently under federal investigation for possible tax fraud involving his insurance businesses. "Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life - an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family," Walter said in a statement. Kushner, founder of the Thrive Capital investment firm, previously held a stake in the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies and will have to divest his current ownership stake in the league's Miami Heat. He had also been touted as a primary investor in FIFA President Gianni Infantino's now-abandoned plan to open the World Cup to private investment, which roiled global football in recent weeks. Iger stepped down as CEO of Disney in March, more than three years after beginning his second stint at the head of the entertainment giant, having been brought back to right the ship after what was viewed as a challenging few years for the company under Bob Chapek. The veteran businessman had originally helmed the parks-to-movies conglomerate between 2005 and 2020, overseeing an expansion that brought mega-franchises like "Star Wars" into the Disney stable, making himself one of Hollywood's most indispensable executives. The period saw a huge cash injection into theme parks, which remain a jewel in the company's crown, helping to push up the share price fivefold. He and his wife, Willow Bay, purchased a controlling interest in the National Women's Soccer League's Angel City FC in 2024. Lakers legend Magic Johnson, a former part-owner of the team and past president of basketball operations, welcomed the deal in an X post. "I want to congratulate my good friend Bob Iger and Josh Kushner on their purchase of the Los Angeles Lakers!" Johnson wrote. "Laker fans, you couldn't have two better owners. I've known Bob personally for over 40 years - he has always loved the Lakers and basketball and he will bring championships back to LA."

LeBron James announced on Friday he will play for the Philadelphia 76ers next season, with the 41-year-old NBA superstar hoping to transform another franchise into a championship team. James, a four-time NBA Most Valuable Player, has won four titles in a 23-year career, most recently with the Los Angeles Lakers, who he said earlier this month he would not return to for the 2026-27 campaign. James led the Miami Heat to NBA crowns in 2013 and 2014, brought his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers a title in 2016 and delivered a championship for the Lakers in 2020. He's looking to make the same magic happen in what Rich Paul, James's agent, tells ESPN will be a two-year deal worth $8mn. "I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time," James posted on X. The NBA legend was considering several clubs but will join a 76ers team that traded for forward Jaylen Brown from Boston and boasts a lineup that will also include star center Joel Embiid and guards Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. James averaged 20.9 points a game for the Lakers last season and said he was considering retirement strongly when the campaign concluded. "I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn't ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game," James posted on X. "I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game." Paul played up the potential clubs James could join during more than three weeks of mystery about where he might sign. Would James return home to Cleveland, return to Miami, possibly join pals Stephen Curry and Draymond Green at Golden State? Would he find another contender to boost? "This is my last decision," James posted. "I'm not going for money. I'm not going for family. "What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship." James did send his regrets to some of his other suitors, posting: "Thank you LA. Miami I'll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always be home!"      

LeBron James is scheduled to appear in New York twice this week at Fanatics Fest, a sports fan gathering where he could speak about his uncertain NBA future.The 41-year-old NBA all-time scoring leader has said he will not return to the Los Angeles Lakers but wants to play a 24th season with another club.James's agent, Rich Paul, has indicated top contending teams for his client next season include Miami and hometown Cleveland, clubs he has led to NBA titles in the past, plus Philadelphia and Golden State.The four-time NBA champion and four-time NBA Most Valuable Player plans a live recording of his "Mind the Game" podcast on Thursday afternoon at the gathering at the Javits Center.Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton is slated to be his co-host.On Friday afternoon, James is set to record his talk show "The Shop" at the festival. He appeared at the event last year to speak about the show.If James did announce his choice for a new team at the event, it would not be the first time his selection had been hot video news.In 2010, a week after becoming a free agent by leaving Cleveland, James appeared on a live ESPN special called "The Decision" where he revealed he was going to sign with the Miami Heat.James joined Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade on a superteam that won two NBA titles and launched "King" James on a run of eight consecutive NBA Finals.   

Superstar LeBron James on Tuesday informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he will continue his NBA career elsewhere.James, 41, has spent the past eight seasons with ‌the Lakers, highlighted by helping the franchise win the ​2020 NBA title."LeBron ‌James is one of the greatest athletes in ‌history. We ⁠will always ‌be thankful for his eight years ‌with the Lakers -- including the title he led us to ⁠in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold," Lakers governor Jeanie Buss said in a statement. "We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of ​the Lakers family."Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul spoke with Lakers president Rob Pelinka on Tuesday morning and informed the team of James' ‌plans to play elsewhere, ⁠per ESPN.The network ​reported Monday that the Golden State Warriors needed ​some financial flexibility if they were going to pursue James and complete a trade for Anthony Davis with the Washington Wizards. They achieved that when Draymond Green opted out of his deal. It is believed Green will renegotiate his contract with more team-friendly terms in the short run, freeing some cash for James.Paul also is the agent for Green and Davis.Per the report, James ‌would take a pay ‌cut to play for ⁠the Warriors. He played last season on the final year of ⁠a two-year, $101 million ⁠contract with the Lakers, and only Los Angeles could sign him to a deal in that salary range.ESPN reported the Warriors could offer him a $15.1 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception. Given James' career earnings and a net worth estimated by Forbes at $1.4 billion, ​he reportedly is putting happiness over money this time around.A four-time NBA MVP and the league's all-time leading scorer, James completed his record-setting 23rd NBA season. He officially will become a free agent at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday and will draw interest from teams aside from Golden State.James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds this past season ‌with the Lakers. ​The 22-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion is the all-time leader in games (1,622) and points (43,440). 

The NBA's proposed new European league would distribute hundreds of millions of dollars per year to its franchises, George Aivazoglou, one of the league's senior executives, told AFP.The NBA project, which is due to be launched in 2027 in partnership with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), has come under intense scrutiny with respect to its financial viability.Franchises would need to stump up between "500 million and one billion" dollars to take part, and in return they would become "partners" in the NBA Europe project, said Aivazoglou, the NBA's managing director for Europe and the Middle East.Almost all top level European basketball sides are losing money, although the NBA model envisages franchises -- many newly created ones -- set up in major cities such as London, Paris, Berlin and Madrid.These are cities where the sporting environment, largely dominated by football, is already saturated. 'RECORD INTEREST'NBA commissioner Adam Silver said two weeks ago that they had received "record interest" from potential franchises, whose bids to join the new league are due at the end of the month.As well as FIBA, the NBA has been in discussions with EuroLeague Basketball, which organises the continent's top basketball competition -- the equivalent of football's Champions League -- which was first held in 1958.The NBA is pitching its proposed new league as a huge money-spinner for potential investors -- despite their mammoth initial outlay."The partner becomes a shareholder. There is asset value there," said Aivazoglou."This is the NBA's league in Europe and this will be an asset that is worth in the tens of billions of dollars."So you're buying into that, obviously buying into a share of the NBA brand, which as we know will be a significant accelerator of how we create value in the ecosystem."He said that the franchises would benefit from the NBA's "digital direct consumer technology, our broadcast operations, our commercial capabilities". 12 PERMANENT FRANCHISESThe plan is to create a competition with 12 permanent franchises with four more teams needing to qualify to take part.All of those teams would benefit from "very significant central distributions from the league -- we're talking on aggregate in the hundreds of millions per year", said Aivazoglou.Divided between 16 teams, that translates as tens of millions each.An inside source at Qatar Sports Investment, the owners of the Paris Saint-Germain football team who have been approached by the NBA over creating a franchise, told AFP in January that the initial investment required to join was exorbitant and prohibitive.The NBA has pledged, though, to invest three billion dollars into the project to help cover initial losses."We're building a league for the next 100 years," insisted Aivazoglou.Once the bidding process ends on June 29, the NBA "will move forward with next steps that could include announcements from there".  

The New York Knicks, fueled by a sensational 45 points from Jalen Brunson, rallied again to beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 and win their first NBA title in 53 years on Saturday.The Knicks won the best-of-seven championship series 4-1, denying Victor Wembanyama and his young Spurs teammates on their home floor to lift the trophy for the first time since 1973.The Knicks, who recovered from 29 points down in game four to produce the biggest comeback in Finals history, erased a double-digit deficit to win for the fourth time in the series.They trailed by 16 in the second quarter and were down by 10 early in the fourth, but Brunson wouldn't let them lose."I've got no words," Brunson said after setting a Knicks record for points in a Finals game, surpassing Willis Reed's 38 in game three of the team's 1970 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers."I don't know what I'm feeling," added Brunson, who was named Finals Most Valuable Player. "I'm in awe. Whenever someone counts us out, we find a way to come back and do something about it."French star Wembanyama scored 19 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked five shots and rookie Dylan Harper scored 25 points off the bench for San Antonio.But once again the Spurs team that vanquished the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals were unable to hold off the crafty and determined Knicks.The win marked the final chapter of a dramatic playoff run which had captivated New York, with tens of thousands of long-suffering fans packing neighborhood watch parties throughout the Big Apple as the team inched towards a first title in more than half a century.Within moments of clinching victory on Saturday, the Empire State Building was lit up in the Knicks' signature orange and blue colors, as raucous celebrations erupted outside the team's Madison Square Garden home.There was a boisterous blue and orange-clad contingent cheering them on at the Spurs' Frost Bank Center as well, where the celebrities on the sidelines included not only longtime Knicks fans but also Britain's Prince Harry, who sat with NBA commissioner Adam Silver.Mikal Bridges scored 14 points and Josh Hart added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Knicks. Karl-Anthony Towns scored just two points before fouling out in the fourth quarter but pulled down 10 rebounds and came up with three steals and a blocked shot.Fouled on a three-pointer, Brunson made all three free-throws to put the Knicks up 86-85 with 3:40 left to play.It was their first lead since the opening minutes and they wouldn't trail again. Game four hero OG Anunoby drove for a dunk that made it 88-85 and after the Spurs knotted it at 88-88 Brunson put New York back in front with a driving basket and the Knicks held on. 'We weren't ready'With their backs against the wall the Spurs were locked in defensively from the opening tip-off. Wembanyama set the tone, blocking three shots in the first quarter as the Spurs powered to a 23-13 lead, holding the Knicks to their fewest points in any quarter this post-season.Wembanyama tied a Finals record with five blocks in the first half and drilled a three-pointer that pushed the Spurs lead to 16 early in the second period.But the Knicks were heating up, cutting the deficit to three before Devin Vassell's fadeaway basket at the buzzer sent the Spurs into the interval with a 42-37 lead.San Antonio quickly rebuilt a double-digit lead, but Brunson and the gritty Knicks wouldn't let them get away."We weren't ready to win an NBA championship," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "The better team won. We did a lot of good things, and we didn't finish the job. That's what it is."

Four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry ended his sneaker free agency on Monday, announcing a 10-year deal with Chinese company Li-Ning after leaving Under Armour last November.Curry, 38, revealed the deal on social media and called it "the partnership of a lifetime" that will include global expansion of his Curry Brand, basketball products, a golf line, leisure clothing and the ability to sign other athletes to his brand."This is bigger than a show deal, bigger than a signature series," Curry said in a video, saying Li-Ning will deliver "sneakers that I believe in that will continue to deliver at the highest level."Other Li-Ning athletes with their shoes include Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler, Curry's Golden State Warriors teammate.Curry had been a partner with Under Armour for 13 years before the split and had worn various brands through the NBA season.
