Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to play with "pure fire" as they look to bounce back from a series of damaging defeats in today's Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon.Arteta's side can reach the semi-finals of the competition for a second successive season if they finish off Sporting at the Emirates Stadium.The Gunners go into the quarter-final second leg with a 1-0 lead after last week's game in Lisbon.But that narrow success was Arsenal's only victory in their last four matches, with three defeats sparking claims Arteta and his team are choking as the pressure mounts at the business end of the season."There is no fear. Pure fire. That's it. Me, the first one. Pure fire. That's what I want to see on the players, on the people, on myself," he insisted at his pre-match press conference."Fire! I'm on fire. I'm on fire. That's it. Nothing else. I'm dreaming so much. I've done so much to be in this position because I know how this club was. I've done so much and this is beauty."Losing the League Cup final against Manchester City and the FA Cup quarter-final against second-tier Southampton was bad enough.But a shock 2-1 home defeat against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday left Arteta facing pointed questions about Arsenal's character.Arsenal are just six points ahead of second-placed City, who have a game in hand and host the Gunners in a seismic showdown on Sunday.The north Londoners have finished Premier League runners-up for the past three seasons -- twice blowing substantial leads to City in 2023 and 2024.They have also failed to win a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, which remains the only silverware won by Arteta in over six years in charge.There is a growing feeling of deja vu among a nervous Arsenal fan-base, but Arteta launched a passionate defence of his squad."We are in April, we have an incredible opportunity ahead of us. Let's confront it, let's go for it by really putting absolutely everything into it," added the Spaniard."I want to get it done for all these people that have been in this journey with us. And because they deserve it, because it's been unbelievable. That's what is driving me every single day. I have zero fear."'Doing something incredible'Arsenal haven't lifted the Premier League since 2004 and have never won the Champions League.If they make the Champions League last four this season, it would be the first time they have reached the semi-finals of the competition in two consecutive seasons.Arteta, whose side lost to Paris Saint-Germain in last year's semi-finals, acknowledged the size of the task facing Arsenal as they try to do a Premier League and Champions League double."What we are trying to achieve is difficult, is challenging, and is bumpy and it's supposed to be like this," he said."I said to the players, 'Guys, we are trying to do something that hasn't been done in the history of the club in 140 years. So that tells you the difficulty of what you are doing'."We have the opportunity tomorrow to go to the semi-finals. We are competing to win the Premier League and we are in a really strong position."So the team is doing something incredible because it's never been done before." 

Pep Guardiola insists he “couldn’t care less” about Arsenal’s stumble letting Manchester City back into the Premier League title race. Guardiola’s side were in danger of being blown away by Arsenal after their inconsistent form left the Gunners in pole position. But second-placed City have been handed a lifeline by Arsenal’s damaging draws against Wolves and Brentford. They are now just five points behind Arsenal with a game in hand and a home match against Mikel Arteta’s men to come in April. If City win their remaining 12 matches they will be crowned champions for the fifth time in the last six seasons. But Guardiola is not getting carried away by the opportunity. Instead, he remains focused on today’s visit from Newcastle, when a win would close the gap on Arsenal to two points before the Gunners face Tottenham in the north London derby tomorrow. “I didn’t talk about the table, or our position or something like that. I could not care less,” Guardiola said. “I didn’t talk about that for one second. Just Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle. If you ask me this question with two or three games left, I will have your answer. It’s 12 games left, it’s an eternity.” Having won six titles during 10 years at City, Guardiola knows the final weeks of the season will bring more twists and turns. He also has experience of watching Arsenal let substantial leads slip away in the 2023 and 2024 title races, allowing City to snatch the trophy from their grasp. “Many things are going to happen until the end of the season. For now it is Newcastle, a rest and after it Leeds. It has always been like that,” he said. “Seventy per cent of the players are new, so they don’t have the experience to live these kinds of situations. An experience is to win tomorrow. It is only one. Arsenal were nine points (ahead) when we had a game in hand, so whenever everybody is on the same games played then after that we will see the difference. I understand you want to anticipate what is going to happen. That doesn’t count. It is Newcastle, that is all.” Arteta urges Arsenal to ‘write own destiny’ after title wobble Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta challenged spluttering Arsenal to start writing their “own destiny” in north London derby at Tottenham after losing control of the Premier League title race. The Gunners have finished as runners-up for the last three seasons and their latest untimely stumble has raised pointed questions about their ability to cope with the pressure of the title race. But Arteta is adamant his players can handle the tension, as long as they embrace the opportunity to make history. “What I have seen is a tremendous reaction again. When you lose points with the last kick of the game, in an unpredictable manner, nobody can really understand that. But this is football,” he said. “Life moves on, there’s nothing we can do. It is about what happens next. That was a chapter. In chapter 27, we draw against Wolves. In the next one it is about how we write our own destiny going forward.” Arsenal have squandered the lead in their last two matches, drawing 1-1 with Brentford and 2-2 at bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Failing to beat Wolves after establishing a two-goal lead was especially painful, with a mix-up between keeper David Raya and defender Gabriel Magalhaes sparking Tom Edozie’s stoppage-time equaliser. “The immediate reaction is tough. It was a shock to the system. We wanted to win and we couldn’t and we have to move on,” Arteta said. “But we have clear instructions. We have to live in the present. The present is beautiful, we are exactly where we want to be in every competition.” Arsenal have won just two of their last seven league games, but troubled Tottenham are in even worse form, with no wins in their previous eight top-flight matches.

Mikel Arteta warned Arsenal's title rivals that their ruthless 4-1 rout of Aston Villa showed they are on track to win the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.Arteta's side issued a significant statement of intent in the title race by crushing Villa with a second half blitz at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.A costly mistake from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez opened the floodgates as his failure to catch a corner allowed Gabriel Magalhaes to bundle home. Martin Zubimendi doubled the lead moments later before Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus produced clinical finishes to complete the demolition.Ollie Watkins' stoppage-time goal was no consolation for out-classed Villa, who paid the price for failing to turn their first half dominance into goals. After losing at Villa and Liverpool and drawing with Manchester City and Chelsea earlier this season, Arsenal finally have a landmark victory in the bid to win the title.Arteta hailed the result as proof Arsenal have what it takes to lift the Premier League trophy at last after finishing as runners-up for three successive seasons."Well, it has been a great 2025 on a personal and professional level. The way these guys, the club and the staff make me enjoy my work every single day is brilliant," Arteta said. "In 2026, we know what we want. We will have to work really hard for it every single day, but I think we are on the right tracks for it."Arsenal end 2025 five points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who play their game in hand at Sunderland on Thursday, while third-placed Villa are six points adrift of the leaders. Ending Villa's club-record equalling 11-match winning run was a sweet moment for Arteta after the pain of Emiliano Buendia's stoppage-time winner for Unai Emery's men earlier in December."It is a beautiful evening. That was a very tough match, as we knew it would be, because they are a top opponent," said Arteta. "The first 10 minutes were a bit shaky and we had to adjust things. After that, we grabbed the game and we were creating the chances. The way we started the second half was amazing. We really turned things up and were efficient in everything that we did. We had to be really meticulous. It's a big credit to my players because against this team it isn't easy."After grinding out a series of victories with just a one-goal margin lately, this was the kind of swaggering display that underlined Arsenal's vast potential. "We needed scrappy goals to win other games but today the quality of our finishing was top and made the difference," Arteta said.Praising Brazil defender Gabriel's influence on his first start since being injured in November, Arteta added: "We saw it today. He came back after six weeks out and composed himself against one of the best strikers in the league in Ollie Watkins. I thought he was tremendous."Arteta and Emery didn't shake hands at the final whistle, with the Villa boss claiming his fellow Spaniard was too busy celebrating to acknowledge him. "When I finish the match I am always waiting to shake hands with another coach but he was with his coaches and I can't wait for him. Of course, I was there but no problem. I went to my dressing room," Emery said.Arteta played down the incident, saying: "Sometimes we are in this sort of moment, so it's not an issue for me."Emery was left to rue Martinez's mistake and an injury to Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana, which he felt changed the momentum of the match. "The first goal, how they scored it maybe could be foul but here in England it is more difficult because the referees let you touch the keepers," he said. "That changed everything. After Onana's injury we lost everything in the middle. Arsenal have the power they showed. That is football."
