The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), along with other healthcare entities in the country, has launched a month-long campaign to raise awareness of the various types of blood cancer as August is observed as Blood Cancer Awareness Month.  The ministry has advised the public to watch for the disease’s symptoms while highlighting the treatment options available in the country.  Furthermore, other healthcare entities, such as the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), have highlighted the importance of raising awareness of the disease.  The HMC noted that the awareness campaign aims to educate the public about risk factors, warning signs, and the importance of prevention, and to encourage people to get tested and adopt a healthy lifestyle to reduce risk.  The MoPH has highlighted through a number of social media posts the importance of early diagnosis and necessary treatment for various types of blood cancer.  The ministry said that blood cancer is a group of cancers that affects how blood cells are produced and function and usually begins in the bone marrow or in the lymphatic system.  The main types of blood cancer are myeloma, leukaemia, and lymphoma, and the MoPH has said that people should take the early warning signs seriously.  Leukaemia is the most prevalent type of blood cancer in the country as per the national records at the ministry.  The most common symptoms of blood cancer are frequent or severe infections, unexplained weight loss and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin.  Other major symptoms include bone pain or back pain, especially in myeloma, persistent fatigue or weakness and easy bruising or bleeding. The MoPH highlighted that age, genetic factors and family history, previous chemotherapy or radiotherapy, exposure to high radiation, long-term exposure to certain chemicals, weakened immunity, viral infections or autoimmune disease are the major risk factors for blood cancer. Blood tests, bone marrow biopsy, image tests such as CT, PET and MRI, among others, and specialised laboratory tests to identify the exact type and genetic features are some of the ways used to diagnose blood cancer. Three key drivers for better health outcomes in case of blood cancer are: awareness of blood cancer symptoms, timely diagnosis, and access to specialised care.  To reduce the risk of the disease, the MoPH has suggested that the public maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active; follow a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables; avoid smoking and limit exposure to harmful chemicals and unnecessary radiation; and seek medical attention for persistent symptoms.  The ministry underlined that Qatar provides very advanced and specialised treatment for all types of blood cancer cases.Treatment options in the country vary according to the type and stage of the disease.  They include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and stem cell (bone marrow) transplant.A routine blood test may help detect cancers at an early stage when they are more treatable.  People can contact the HMC through Nesma’ak at 16060 and PHCC Hayyak at 107 for more information and assistance.

Sidra Medicine, a member of Qatar Foundation, is expanding its investment in healthcare workforce development by introducing its Medical Observership Programme and building on the continued success of the Future Doctor Programme. Both programmes have been developed to create educational pathways for medical education opportunities for both secondary school students and established healthcare professionals. Prof Ibrahim Janahi, chief medical officer and chair of Medical Education at Sidra Medicine, said: “At Sidra Medicine, education is a cornerstone of our mission and a critical investment in the future of healthcare. By creating meaningful opportunities for students, trainees, and healthcare professionals to learn from experienced clinicians and multidisciplinary teams, we are helping develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our communities. “These programmes reflect our commitment to fostering talent, advancing medical education, and inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals.” The newly introduced Medical Observership Programme offers healthcare professionals, medical students, trainees, and academic visitors the opportunity to gain structured observational learning experiences. Dr Murtada Hammad, director of Medical Education Operations at Sidra Medicine, said: “The Medical Observership Programme provides participants with valuable insight into the delivery of specialised healthcare within a world-class academic medical centre. By observing multidisciplinary teams in action and gaining exposure to clinical and operational best practices, participants can broaden their professional perspectives and enhance their understanding of modern healthcare systems.” The programme provides supervised exposure to clinical workflows, multidisciplinary models of care, patient safety practices, and operational standards across a specialised healthcare environment. Observerships are non-clinical and do not involve direct patient care or participation in clinical activities. Available opportunities may include Paediatrics, Paediatric Subspecialties, Women’s Services, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatology, Surgery, and Diagnostic and Support Services, subject to departmental availability and institutional approval. The programme is open to physicians, specialists, residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, allied health professionals, and selected high school students. International applicants may also be considered, subject to institutional requirements and approvals. Sidra Medicine’s Future Doctor Programme, an immersive educational initiative, is designed to inspire secondary school students who aspire to pursue careers in medicine and healthcare. Hosted at Sidra Medicine’s state-of-the-art Simulation Centre, the five-day programme provides students aged 15 to 18 with early exposure to healthcare careers through simulation-based learning, mentorship, clinical department visits, and interactive educational experiences. Participants gain practical knowledge and valuable insights into patient care, while also developing essential healthcare skills through training in first aid, emergency response, and Basic Life Support. The programme includes certification opportunities accredited by the American Heart Association, further enriching students’ learning experience. “Early exposure to healthcare environments can play a transformative role in shaping career aspirations,” added Dr Hammad. “The Future Doctor Programme enables students to engage with healthcare professionals, experience medical learning in a highly interactive environment, and gain a deeper appreciation for the dedication and expertise required in healthcare.” 

A new medical clinic serving more than 3,200 workers has been inaugurated at the General Cleanliness Department Complex in the Industrial Area, bringing primary care, medical screening and on-site medicine dispensing directly into the workplace.The Ministry of Municipality facility was opened by Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs Eng Abdullah Ahmed al-Karani, in the presence of Assistant Undersecretary for Migrant Labour Affairs at the Ministry of Labour Hamad Faraj Dalmouk, Director of the General Cleanliness Department Muqbil Madhour al-Shammari, and other ministry officials.Al-Shammari said the clinic underscores the department's commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment built on the highest standards.It operates in two daily shifts, from 9am to 1pm and 6pm to 10pm, to give all workers flexible access to care.The opening forms part of wider efforts to strengthen the health system and occupational safety by delivering rapid, integrated medical services within the work environment, he added, helping improve workers' quality of life and the sustainability of the department's services.
