Nowadays, globalisation has a clear impact on story exchange and narratives, not only in Europe and America, but also across the world. For example, in Qatar, most scientific theories originally come from the West, where different vocabularies are used. I have experienced the transition of concepts from English research to Arabic literature, which creates major challenges in understanding and defining these terms based on Arabic and Islamic culture. Today, the Media Encyclopedia has a further task: to develop the roots of Arabic words not only in the academic field, but also in the practical field. This fundamentally enhances Qatari practices and supports more innovative engagement with media concepts. For example, as a scholar seeking to apply a recent media theory to understand the Qatari phenomenon, a significant gap often appears between the operational definition of the theory and the actual reality of Qatari society. The Media Encyclopedia bridges this cultural misunderstanding. Through it, we can not only adopt media concepts and conceptual frameworks, but also create Arabic terms that inherently reflect the Qatari phenomenon. The Media Encyclopedia represents a new step toward authentic approaches that promote Qatari norms and Arabic literature, translating social interaction into accurate and culturally grounded meaning. As scholars and practitioners, we are proud of this project, and we aim to further develop it and deliver its deep value to future generations. Undoubtedly, this initiative will enhance the country’s image. Many misunderstandings and cultural clashes occur due to gaps in communication. Through the Media Encyclopedia, people can exchange meaning without distortion, understand one another more equally, and create inclusive relationships. Qatar has become a small village for people from all over the world. It is demographically diverse, with more than three languages spoken within the same society. In the face of these challenges of meaning and translation, the Media Encyclopedia fills this gap and serves as a bridge for communication among people and institutions. • Taleb al-Adbah is Assistant Professor in Mass Communication Department- Qatar University 

The Qatar Press Centre (QPC) is organising a special session on “The Media Encyclopedia in the Digital Age”, which will highlight the “Media Encyclopedia”, the pioneering Arab project recently launched by the Qatar Media Corporation.This session will be part of a new meeting of the "Press Salon" to be held today, at 9pm at the QPC headquarters.The session will shed light on the concept of the encyclopaedia and its importance in keeping pace with the rapid transformations witnessed by the media sector, especially in the context of the digital revolution, the proliferation of new platforms, and the convergence of professional and technical concepts.The session will also address the scholarly efforts exerted in preparing the encyclopaedia, the stages it went through, and the most prominent challenges that accompanied the process of collecting, validating, and documenting terms according to a precise scientific methodology.The session will feature Dr Mohammed al-Khatib, head of the Scientific Committee for the Media Encyclopedia, and Mohammed Salman al-Marri, general supervisor of the Media Encyclopedia.They will present their practical experience on this knowledge-based project and its objectives, which aim to serve researchers, media professionals, media students, and those interested in media affairs.The session will be moderated by Dr Aisha al-Kuwari, who will discuss topics related to the importance of documenting media terminology, the role of specialised encyclopaedias in enhancing professionalism, and their contribution to developing media discourse in accordance with academic standards and professional ethics.This encyclopaedia reflects the Qatar Media Corporation's commitment to supporting scientific research and developing modern media discourse. It aims to support media knowledge in Arabic, meet the needs of academics and professionals, and keep pace with the rapid transformations in the digital environment.Furthermore, it documents media concepts, theories, prominent media figures, and influential institutions within a scientific and methodological framework that enhances knowledge empowerment and supports the development of Arabic media discourse.The first volume of the Media Encyclopedia is scheduled for release at the upcoming Doha International Book Fair 2026, while the corporation is preparing to publish the next volume in May as part of a periodic publishing plan that maintains the project's momentum and enables ongoing research contributions.The encyclopaedia is available in two formats: written and audio, through a dedicated online platform that provides access to the content at any time.A policy of continuous updating will be adopted to keep pace with developments in the media field.The encyclopaedia's content covers key topics including: traditional and digital media terminology, media theories and their applications, influential media figures in the Arab world and internationally, and leading media institutions. 

The Qatar Media Corporation (QMC) launched Monday the ‘Media Encyclopedia: Towards a New Reading of the Structure of the Media Concept’ project at a ceremony held at the Sanad Doha Club in Msheireb, in the heart of the capital.The event was attended by His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Abdulaziz al-Thani, CEO of the QMC, along with a number of officials, editors-in-chief, journalists, experts, and researchers in the media field.This launch marks one of the most prominent pioneering Arab knowledge projects, being the first of its kind in the Arab world. The project aims to enhance the presence of Arab media knowledge and enrich digital and print libraries with rigorous, scholarly content that combines specialisation with accessibility, while restoring the value of authentic and precise media terminology.The launch of the encyclopedia comes within the framework of a comprehensive scientific vision adopted by the QMC. This vision is based on providing an objective analysis of media, its history, concepts, and institutions, drawing upon its Arab heritage and the broader spectrum of human thought.This approach aims to reformulate modern media knowledge in a sophisticated Arabic language that combines academic rigour with accessible presentation. In this context, the encyclopedia aims to support media knowledge in Arabic, meet the needs of academics and professionals, and keep pace with the rapid transformations in the digital environment.It also seeks to document media concepts, theories, prominent figures, and influential institutions within a scientific and methodological framework that enhances empowerment and aligns with the evolution of contemporary Arab media discourse.Mohammed Sal’an al-Marri, the encyclopedia’s supervisor, expressed his deep appreciation to all those who contributed to the completion of this project, including the corporation’s staff, experts, and researchers. He emphasised that the encyclopedia is the fruit of a robust intellectual collaboration aimed at producing a high-quality media resource that serves researchers and practitioners, providing them with a reliable reference that evolves step by step to meet the needs of the Arab media landscape. The launch event featured a panel discussion titled “Towards a New Reading of the Structure of the Media Concept”, which aligned with the project’s objectives of enhancing terminological awareness and developing understanding tools for specialists and those interested in the field.The session was moderated by journalist Abdulrahman al-Shammari, with the participation of Dr Mohammed al-Khatib, Professor of Linguistics at al-Azhar University and member of the Scientific Committee of the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language; Dr Hanan Ahmed al-Fayyad, faculty member at Qatar University; and journalist Ahmed al-Sheikh.The panellists discussed the evolution of media terminology over time, the importance of re-evaluating it in light of modern technological advancements, and the connection between news and its scientific context and historical reality, thus contributing to the unification of conceptual frameworks within the Arab media landscape.The QMC ensured that the encyclopedia is available in both written and audio formats via a dedicated online platform, allowing access to the content at any time.The first volume of the media encyclopedia is scheduled to be launched at the Doha International Book Fair 2026, while the foundation is preparing to release the next volume in May as part of a periodic publishing plan that maintains the project’s momentum and allows for ongoing research contributions to support its sustainability and development.
