France coach Didier Deschamps paid tribute to forward Kylian Mbappe after he scored his eighth goal of the World Cup to fire Les Bleus into the semi-finals on Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Morocco.Mbappe opened the scoring on the hour mark at the Gillette Stadium near Boston having earlier had a penalty saved. Ousmane Dembele then completed the job as France reached the last four of a World Cup for the third tournament in a row."When it's Kylian, there's no problem - he never doubts himself, even though he had another chance before scoring," Deschamps told French broadcaster M6 after Mbappe netted his 20th World Cup goal in 20 appearances at the tournament.Mbappe burst onto the global stage by starring in the side that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and then top-scored at the 2022 edition in Qatar with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final - he now has two more games at this World Cup to overtake that tally.Deschamps confirmed that Mbappe was substituted late in the second half because he had taken a knock to the ankle - the forward was seen applying ice on the sidelines."I am obviously really proud to be in a third straight semi-final," Deschamps added in his post-game press conference.He said his players "never doubted themselves" despite failing to convert a host of chances in the first half, including the penalty that Mbappe squandered."It seems logical and natural, but you still have to achieve it," Deschamps said of reaching another semi-final."Obviously, I have great players, otherwise we wouldn't get there, but it's good. It was complicated because today, after missing the penalty, and with the chances (we had), we didn't convert."France will face either Spain or Belgium in Dallas for a place in the World Cup final. That semi-final will take place next Tuesday, July 14 - France's national day.Les Bleus defeated Belgium in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, and lost to eventual champions Spain in the last four at Euro 2024."Right now we are only in the semi-finals. We have another step to go and it will obviously be really difficult," Deschamps said."We have taken an important step today and we are now guaranteed to have two more games, but I think you know which ones I want to play."The final will take place at the MetLife Stadium just outside New York City on July 19. The beaten semi-finalists, meanwhile, will contest the third-place play-off in Miami the previous day."The only date we have in our diaries for now is the 14th, even if the 14th of July is a nice date for France," added Deschamps. 

France coach Didier Deschamps hailed his side for keeping their cool against an aggressive Paraguay team in heatwave conditions on Saturday as the favourites reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup. “It wasn't easy. They used every resource possible. It is maybe not the kind of football that brings people to the stadium, playing with that aggression, exaggerating everything,” Deschamps told French broadcaster M6. Kylian Mbappe decided the game with a penalty in the 70th minute on a sweltering afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, following a foul on Desire Doue. Mbappe's goal was his seventh so far at the tournament, pulling him level again with Lionel Messi as the joint-leading scorer. Before that, it had been a frustrating afternoon for Les Bleus, and a sharp contrast to their previous free-scoring matches at the tournament. France had scored 13 goals in their four World Cup outings prior to this game, but on Saturday they struggled to make clear chances despite totally dominating possession. Their most creative players - Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola - all found the going tough against a niggly Paraguayan team looking to cause another upset after ousting Germany in the last 32. "We stayed focused on our game. It was difficult, they had lots of men behind the ball and they defend well," added Deschamps. "Obviously the temperatures made it hard to play with intensity and without that they defended well." The match was played in the late afternoon heat, with temperatures hitting 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) in Philadelphia as the city marked the July 4 weekend and the 250th anniversary of American independence. Deschamps was also left perplexed that his team collected three yellow cards, while not a single Paraguay player was booked. "I am not going to criticise the referee but we finished the game with three bookings and yet there were a lot of things going on," Deschamps said in his post-match press conference, as he suggested he and his team were subjected to verbal aggression too. "I won't criticise Paraguay. Every team can play however they want, but I could do without the insults. "The most important thing is that there were no incidents at the end. But all that matters is that we have qualified." Deschamps said he had to resort to using two of his strongest players to protect captain Mbappe against Paraguayan aggression towards the end of the match. "We kept our nerve and that is an essential thing. It doesn't win you the game but it is important," he added. "This experience will help us. After all, we have a lot of players who are playing at their first World Cup," he added. "I wouldn't say it had been easy for us up to now but now we have had a different type of game." France move on to a quarter-final tie next Thursday in Foxborough, Massachusetts, against Morocco, who beat Canada 3-0 in the last 16 earlier Saturday. That game will be a repeat of the 2022 semi-final which France won 2-0, before they went on to lose the final on penalties to Argentina. "Morocco are one of the best teams. We played them four years ago in Doha and they also got to the Africa Cup of Nations final," Deschamps said. He will hope his squad recover quickly from the Paraguay clash, and that key midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni comes back after missing Saturday's game with a thigh injury. "We have a few days now to recuperate. We have some tired players and a few little knocks too."

France forward ‌Ousmane Dembele has defended captain Kylian Mbappe, saying criticism of the ​Real Madrid striker has ‌become excessive as the national team prepare for the World Cup.Dembele, ‌who has ⁠emerged as a ‌key figure for France at the ‌tournament and is a contender for this year's Ballon d'Or after helping Paris ⁠St Germain win the Champions League, told Spanish newspaper Marca that some commentators had gone too far in their assessment of his long-time teammate.Mbappe remains one of the most scrutinised figures in French football since leaving PSG and joining Real Madrid in 2024.Despite still being a prolific scorer, the France captain came under criticism during a season in which Real failed to ​win either La Liga or the Champions League, while some pundits and supporters have questioned his leadership with the national team since he inherited the captaincy following Hugo ‌Lloris's retirement from international football.Mbappe's ⁠performances, public appearances ​and even minor aspects of his behaviour regularly attract intense debate ​in France."The criticism towards him is very, very unfair," Dembele said before France start their World Cup campaign against Senegal on Tuesday. "Some people go a bit too far with the criticism of Kylian."He's an incredible player and a very good person off the pitch. Some people overdo the criticism because he's Kylian Mbappe. They shouldn't keep going after him. Whether he ties his shoelaces or not, whether he pulls up his socks or not... it's too much. He's still a human being."With the France ‌team, he's very good with ‌us, he's a leader."The pair have ⁠developed a close relationship during their years together with Les Bleus. They ⁠are expected to play central roles ⁠in France's bid for a third World Cup title in the United States, Canada and Mexico.Dembele also paid tribute to coach Didier Deschamps, who has announced that he will step down after the World Cup following more than a decade in charge of the national side."He's simply an exceptional coach," Dembele said. "He will ​forever remain a legend among French national team coaches."Deschamps guided France to World Cup glory in 2018 and another final four years later.Asked about the prospect of former France great Zinedine Zidane succeeding Deschamps, Dembele welcomed the idea."We hope to welcome him one day to the France bench," he said. "I'm convinced he would do a fantastic job."Zidane, who won the World Cup as a player in 1998 and later enjoyed major success coaching Real Madrid, has long ‌been linked with the ​France job but has repeatedly declined to discuss the position while Deschamps remains in charge. 

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said Kylian Mbappe joined the club to star in key matches like today’s Champions League clash against German giants Bayern Munich. Arbeloa said Mbappe was a vital part of the team, although questions remain over whether record 15-time winners Madrid can strike the right balance with all their biggest names on the pitch at the same time. French superstar Mbappe, the club’s top goalscorer, did not start either game in the last 16 tie against Manchester City which Madrid won impressively, because of a long struggle with a knee sprain. Fit once more, Arbeloa indicated Mbappe was likely to feature along with Vinicius Junior in attack at the Santiago Bernabeu against Bayern in the quarter-final first leg. “I’m delighted to have that kind of problem, to have outstanding players at my disposal and to have a player like Kylian Mbappe, who came to Real Madrid for matches like tomorrow’s and for knockout ties like this one,” Arbeloa told reporters. “I’m sure we’re going to see Kylian at his best, leading the team the way he’s always known how to do, and I have a great deal of confidence in all the players.” England international Jude Bellingham is also finding his way back to fitness after injury and Arbeloa said he would keep betting on the squad’s stars when they are available. Against City young midfielder Thiago Pitarch and attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz played important roles, but they may get less time on the pitch in the Bayern tie. “It’s clear Mbappe has different characteristics and conditions to those Brahim has, so we have to play in a different way, but I’m delighted to have this problem,” said Arbeloa. “Just as you mention Bellingham and other great players I have available, for me it’s a blessing to be able to count on everyone...” he continued. “Having a player like Mbappe in the team is an extraordinary stroke of luck. I don’t know if there’s a coach in the world who wouldn’t want to have him. I put myself in the shoes of the defenders who play against Real Madrid and have to face Mbappe, Vinicius, Valverde, Bellingham... I think they’re some of the best players on the planet.” Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior said he worked well together with Mbappe, despite some believing the fit is not right for Madrid. “People talk a lot... ‘Kyli’ is here to help us, he’s always given us confidence, he scores the goals for us, we have to be connected tomorrow, above all with the fans and all the players,” he told reporters. “It’s a difficult game where the best players make the difference, and Kyli is one of those. I have an incredible connection with him, not just on the pitch but off it too.” Vinicius pledged Madrid will be at their best against Bayern Munich after a poor showing in La Liga on Saturday, when they lost 2-1 against Mallorca, leaving them seven points adrift of leaders Barcelona. “There are days where we are more connected or less connected, and that happened against Mallorca,” explained the forward. “We had come from the international break and today, as the coach said, if we’re not at 200 percent, we’re not going to win games. I hope we are tomorrow, because it’s an important day for us.”The winger, who has become a leading figure in the fight against racism, also spoke about the Islamophobic chanting at Spain’s friendly against Egypt last week, which Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal criticised. “It’s important that Lamine speaks and that can help people,” said Vinicius, who claimed he was racially abused by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni in a Champions League match in February, which the Argentine denies. “I’m not saying Spain, Germany or Portugal are racist countries, but there are racists in these countries, especially in Brazil too, in a lot of countries there are racists. But if we continue this fight together, I think that in the future new players don’t have to suffer these things and above all, people in general too.”

French superstar Kylian Mbappe says the knee injury that kept him sidelined for almost two months is "behind him" and there had never been a concern he would miss this year's World Cup.The 27-year-old Real Madrid striker admitted he had not been at his best mentally during the 54-day absence – the longest of his career. "There was a lot of frustration, anger and anxiety," the French captain said.Mbappe, who along with the French squad flew to the United States for friendlies against Brazil on Thursday and then Colombia Sunday, came on as a substitute for a few minutes in last week's Champions League last-16 match at Manchester City.He also played over 25 minutes for Real – for whom he is top scorer this campaign with 38 goals in 34 appearances – in the 3-2 derby win over Atletico on Sunday. "It is behind me," he said of the injury. "I put myself under a regime where I wanted to return gently but with a hunger to play. I hope I am going to be able to play during the international break and make a difference."The France captain – a World Cup winner in 2018 and runner-up in 2022 – said he had been annoyed by the rumour mill suggesting his injury was more serious than it actually was. He had avoided undergoing surgery after scans he had in Paris at the beginning of March revealed he would not require an intervention. "Lots of people gave their own diagnosis, I heard many false things," said Mbappe, who was appearing at an event of an insurance company he invested in in Paris on Monday.Mbappe said there had never been a doubt about the injury preventing him from playing at what will be his third World Cup finals in June. "No, that was never a topic of discussion," he said. "At worst I could have had a partial rupture (of the ligament) which would have ruled me out till April. There was never a debate about the World Cup or the climax to the season with Real Madrid."In spite of the sprain and the resulting pain the former PSG star played part of January and February, admitting he and Real "had tried to manage it as best as possible". "One has to look at the positive, today, I have no pain and we are still in the hunt for trophies, that is what is most important," he said. "We will have time afterwards to assess how it was handled. I am not going to go into the details, I will say I was not at my best in handling this period, I was not the happiest of players but I am delighted that is behind me now. All (the pain) is gone."Mbappe said he was looking forward to pitting his wits against the Brazilians, who are managed by Carlo Ancelotti, who coached the Frenchman in his first season at Real. "It might be a friendly but when you play Brazil, the greatest footballing nation with five World Cup wins, it is unbelievable to play against them," he said."It is a team who could win the World Cup, it is good to compare how we are at the moment with them. Even if we cannot take a lot of learnings out of this get together, we can nevertheless take some. One thing is for sure we are not going there for a holiday, we are going there as a step in our preparations for the World Cup."
