Chelsea's Martinez undergoes surgery after collision at Everton

Emiliano Martinez has undergone surgery following his collision with Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, the Chelsea goalkeeper said on Sunday, after his club's 2-0 Premier League victory.Pedro Neto's double on Saturday at the Hill Dickinson Stadium ended Everton's unbeaten start to the league season, but Chelsea's victory was overshadowed by the lengthy injury stoppage in the second half.Martinez and Branthwaite came together when Everton's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall whipped a free kick into the box and, although the defender was back on his feet after treatment, the Argentina goalkeeper required treatment from paramedics.The 34-year-old was eventually strapped to a stretcher and carried off the field before being taken to hospital with a concussion, as Argentine media reported he had suffered a jaw injury in the collision.Martinez, wearing a hospital gown, posted on social media early on Sunday: "Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well."The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we'll be back."Martinez's injury forced Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso to give Mike Penders his Premier League debut, and the 21-year-old keeper helped Chelsea keep their first clean sheet in the league since January.Penders, a Belgian youth international, will likely have to step in until Martinez is cleared to return to training.Chelsea host Tottenham Hotspur in the league next Saturday followed by a League Cup fourth-round game at Liverpool on October 28 and a home Premier League match against Manchester United three days later."Mike has personality. He's brave and we have full trust with him. He did well," Alonso told reporters."He played in the cup games and whenever he's needed, like the other players whenever they are needed they can perform."It's all about the squad, that all the players feel important and can have their moment whenever they are needed, and that's very positive."

Martinez available for Leeds trip after Man United criticism, Carrick says

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez will be available for Sunday's Premier League game at Leeds United after the club accepted his apology for criticising its transfer policy, manager Michael Carrick said.Martinez met Carrick and senior club officials on Thursday, two days after suggesting United needed greater investment to compete at the highest level following their 2-0 Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid.The centre back later apologised for his remarks and Carrick sought to downplay the episode when he spoke to reporters on Friday."We've moved on from that. It was one of those things. It's really not a drama for the group," Carrick said."The squad have trained really well and they are in good spirits. There is a freshness about the group..."He's part of the squad (for Sunday)."The Argentina international had singled out director of football Jason Wilcox in the post-game interview, saying United needed more signings to compete with their rivals and build a squad capable of challenging in Europe.Martinez made the comments at a difficult time for United, who sit 13th in the Premier League table after winning only one of their opening six matches in their worst start in 40 years. UNITED ACCEPT MARTINEZ'S APOLOGYThe manager said the club had accepted Martinez's apology."He's released his statement and realised he made a mistake. That's enough for us to move on with," Carrick said."I understand the emotion. We ask for passion. There's a way of doing that and that's been acknowledged. But we need to carry that passion in the right way."Carrick, appointed permanently in May after overseeing the club's revival last season, has come under pressure following a poor start to the campaign, but said belief within the dressing room remained intact."I don't need results. We all need results. It's bigger than me... it's not about any individual player. It's about a football club," Carrick said."There's a lot of people saying a lot of things. That doesn't mean you know what's going on here."That doesn't distract us from what we are creating here as a group."United travel to seventh-placed Leeds seeking their first victory in more than a month.

Martinez brace saves Inter in Serie A top-two clash with Roma

Lautaro Martinez rode to Inter Milan's rescue on Saturday as the Serie A champions fought back from two-down to force a 2-2 draw at Roma.With both sides holding perfect records heading into the top-two clash in the capital, it was an early season glimpse of what may well be the Scudetto race this term.Gian Piero Gasperini's Roma have arguably been the most impressive team in Italy so far this season, with Donyell Malen's free-scoring form and a miserly defence giving them four wins from four.Manu Kone's double had given Roma a 2-0 lead at half-time but for the second time in a week Cristian Chivu's side, inspired by Martinez's brace, showed mettle as the champions fought back from such a deficit.Following the announcement earlier in the day of the death of Sandro Mazzola at the age of 83, both sides paid hommage to the former Inter Milan and Italy playmaker prior to kick-off, with the Nerazzurri also sporting black armbands.Roma raced out of the blocks as Kone sent them ahead with less than six minutes on the clock when he readjusted his body well to rifle home Nahuel Molina's knockdown.It was the France midfielder's first goal of the season as Inter again made a sluggish start that will worry coach Cristian Chivu.The champions had also bounced back from being 2-0 down inside the opening 16 minutes at home to Udinese to emerge 5-3 winners on Monday.But Inter were not at the races for most of the opening period at the Stadio Olimpico as Paulo Dybala twice threatened to double the hosts' advantage.France forward Marcus Thuram had a golden opportunity to get Chivu's men level in the 26th minute but could only fire straight at Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar.A clever Curtis Jones pass then presented Alessandro Bastoni with a chance at goal seven minutes later, but the Italy defender thrashed the ball against the post from a tight angle.However, just as Inter slowly seemed to be waking up, Kone had the ball in the net again when he tucked in from close range at the back post on 37 minutes.His celebrations were initially cut short by the assistant's flag before VAR intervened and, after a lengthy review, referee Davide Massa pointed to the centre circle as the 25-year-old skipped off in delight after notching the sixth Serie A goal of his career. INTER AWAKENFormer Inter defender Chivu must have delivered some choice words to his charges at half-time as his side started the second period with a bang.Inter captain Martinez halved the deficit less than a minute after the interval with a scuffed finish from Thuram's pull-back that just crept perfectly into the side netting of Svilar's far post.Dutch forward Malen came within a forehead's breadth of adding to his tally of six goals in the 68th minute with a slick touch and turn in a crowded box, only for his venomous strike to cannon to safety off Inter stopper Josep Martinez's brow.Just as the match appeared to be petering out going into the final 10 minutes, a sudden goalmouth scramble saw Svilar make a sharp save before Martinez headed onto the bar under pressure.Inter, however, managed to recycle the ball and it came back to the Argentine international inside the box and this time he made no mistake as he controlled with his thigh and arrowed a finish past the Serb to ensure the spoils were shared.Elsewhere, third-placed Cagliari climbed to 12 points courtesy of a 1-0 win at Udinese, while Bologna and Torino played out a 1-1 draw in Emilia-Romagna.Venezia host Roma's city rivals Lazio in Saturday's final match.

Inter roar back in five-goal thriller with Napoli

A last-gasp winner from Lautaro Martinez sealed a breathless win for Inter as the Serie A champions fought back from two goals down to edge visiting Napoli 3-2."I'm happy we managed to fight back, that was missing last year," Martinez told DAZN. "Every year we are raising the bar and trying to shout that on the pitch."Both goalkeepers were forced into early saves in a sign of what was to come in an end-to-end encounter that remained goalless at half-time after Federico Dimarco's free-kick rattled the Napoli cross bar. The game exploded in the second half when Matteo Politano guided home a shot in the 50th minute before Rasmus Hojlund's curler doubled the Napoli lead three minutes later.The visitors impressed despite the injury-enforced absence of influential midfielder Scott McTominay. Inter responded almost immediately when Martinez hammered in his first goal of the season from a Dimarco cross. Substitute Marcus Thuram came agonisingly close to a leveller when he headed off the post.The France international would not be denied twice, though, and smashed a towering header past Alex Meret in the 82nd minute to level the scores. Chances fell at both ends before Martinez's penalty box instincts proved decisive in the 91st minute as Napoli failed to clear in a goalmouth scramble and the Argentina striker pounced to settle an extraordinary match.Martinez was part of the Argentina squad that reached the World Cup final on July 19. "The important thing is to get back into shape, it isn't easy coming back from the World Cup without doing the preparation," said Martinez.The result sent Inter top of the table on nine points, while Napoli remained on three points. Both sides begin their Champions League campaigns next week, when Inter travel to Real Madrid and Napoli host Arsenal on Tuesday.Earlier, a late Che Adams strike sealed a 2-1 comeback win for Torino as Fiorentina's nightmare start to the season continued. Mateo Pellegrino's long-range strike put Fiorentina in front early in the second half, but a pile-driver from Rolando Mandragora - who had only joined Torino from La Viola four days earlier - drew the scores level.Scotland international Adams sealed his side's first points of the season in the 82nd minute, plucking a cross out of the air and flicking it in from close range to stun the Stadio Artemio Franchi crowd.Fiorentina signed 13 players and appointed new coach Fabio Grosso over the summer after a humbling 15th-place finish last season. The two-time Italian champions have lost their first three games by an aggregate score of 9-1, and were booed off by their own fans following a performance that left them in last place. Gian Piero Gasperini faces his former club when Roma host Atalanta in the final game of the day.

Argentina rally to oust England, return to World Cup final

Enzo Fernandez changed England's weekend plans and Lautaro Martinez booked Argentina in the World Cup final with the game-winner seven minutes later in another dramatic comeback and 2-1 win for the defending world champs at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.Two possessions after he fired a rising missile deflected over the net by England keeper ‌Jordan Pickford, Hernandez used a Lionel Messi assist for a replay of almost the same shot, but planted this one into the left ‌corner of the net in the 85th minute. In the first two minutes of extra time, ‌Martinez settled in front of Pickford at the left edge ‌of the goal and headed a Messi pass by ‌Pickford to cap a stirring rally.The reigning World Cup champions, Argentina meet Spain on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J., with a chance to claim a fourth title.Messi has eight goals and four assists in this World Cup and a tournament- record 12 career assists after two on Wednesday.For more than 80 minutes, all signs were pointing to England getting its first World Cup championship bid in decades. GORDON BROKE THE DEADLOCKWith Argentina's defense backpedaling, Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.He tallied the game's first goal on a brilliant assist from Morgan Rogers, who was fed by Declan Rice. Rogers recovered the ball outside the box right of the goal and found Gordon streaking ahead of defenders to deflect the pass with the side of his right foot for the score.Moments later, England defender Djed Spence caught up to Giuliano Simeone, who had space and pace behind coverage on what would have been a clean shot from close range. The maligned Spence ‌delivered one of the tackles of the tournament, covering significant distance to dislodge the ball inside the box.Before a hydration break as the 70th minute approached, Pickford made his own bid for England's gold star defensive play of the game. He got his right hand on a ball sailing for the right corner of the goal to make a deflection and diving save to his right, keeping the score 1-0. ONLY INCHES AWAY Only inches spared the Three Lions and Pickford from the equalizer courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister in the 76th minute when he met a cross from Rodrigo DePaul near the penalty spot but the shot cannoned off the right post.La Scaloneta tested Pickford immediately out of the halftime break. Julian Alvarez ripped two shots approaching from Pickford's left to spike the energy and decibel level in the dome, but missed both. The second sank into the outside of the net.Messi and Argentina also threatened late in the first half, first when ‌Messi danced free of Harry Kane near midfield ‌and drew a yellow card on midfielder Elliot Anderson. The possession nearly ended in a goal by Fernandez, who tallied the decisive quarterfinal goal to eliminate Egypt last week in the round of 16. His clean strike from outside the box whizzed over the top right corner of the bar in the 39th minute and the first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate.Neither team threatened a legitimate attempt in a physical opening 19 minutes highlighted by contested defense and restraint from referee Ismail Elfath, allowing grinding defense to turn into grass stains instead of scoring chances. CHEST-THUMPING EXCHANGES Elfath helped separate England's Jude Bellingham and Messi when the match opened with a no-call on a forearm from Fernandez to the back of Anderson's head, one of multiple chest-thumping exchanges between the teams in the first half.England missed three chances in the first half. The initial shot could've been confused for a pass. It came when right back Reece James one-touched a pass from Rogers and looked for his first score of the World Cup. His low, soft try from right of the penalty area was easily smothered at ankle height by Emiliano Martinez.Before the late onslaught Messi, playing in his sixth World Cup and 206th international match for Argentina, had a clean look outside the box in the 83rd minute but pushed it wide left.Argentina finished with 15 attempts on goal to five for England, which squares off with France in the third-place match in Miami ‌on Saturday.Spain can break a tie with Italy with a victory. La Roja carries a 37-match unbeaten streak -- 30 wins, seven draws -- into the championship match, vying to win the World Cup for the second time (2010).

Argentina World Cup semi-final hero Martinez 'dreamt' of scoring winner

Argentina's World Cup semi-final match-winner Lautaro Martinez said he had "dreamt" of scoring the goal which took his team through to the final at England's expense on Wednesday."I dreamt it. I told Alexis (Mac Allister) that I was going to score," Martinez said after his heroics off the bench in Atlanta as the reigning champions won the game 2-1."And I said on the bench to Facundo Medina that I was going to come on and score."The World Cup holders were trailing 1-0 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium when the Inter Milan striker was sent on in the 81st minute in place of left-back Nicolas Tagliafico.Lionel Messi set up Enzo Fernandez to equalise in the 85th minute and the Argentina captain then crossed for Martinez to head in the winner in the second minute of injury time."When my old man first bought me a pair of boots, I always dreamed of scoring this goal," said an emotional Martinez.When he spoke again to reporters after leaving the dressing room, Martinez said he had just got off the phone to his mother, who was at work.The 28-year-old Martinez lost his place in Lionel Scaloni's Argentina team early on their run to glory at the 2022 World Cup.He started all three group games this time, scoring in the 3-1 win over Jordan, but was substituted in the narrow victory over Cape Verde in the last 32 and has not started since.Nevertheless, he came on to score in the 3-1 extra-time defeat of Switzerland in the quarter-finals before his decisive role against England.Argentina will now take on Spain in Sunday's final in New Jersey."We are going to be coming up against a top-class side who have not lost in 38 games and have great players," said Martinez."Now we need to get some rest but also enjoy this because what we are doing is not easy, getting back to the final as defending champions three and a half years after winning it."Spain's last defeat was a 1-0 reverse in a friendly against Colombia in March 2024.The teams were due to meet in Qatar in March in the Finalissima, the fixture recently introduced to pit the European champions against the winners of the Copa America.That game was postponed due to the war in the Middle East, triggered by US-Israeli strikes against Iran.The only previous World Cup meeting of Spain and Argentina came in 1966, when the South Americans won 2-1 in a group-stage contest played at Birmingham's Villa Park.

Tadej Pogacar took his third stage victory this week as the world champion sealed overall success in the Tour of Switzerland on Sunday after catching French climber Lenny Martinez 800 metres from the line.After a cat-and-mouse chase up the final climb to Villars-sur-Ollon at the end of a brutal 152km-long mountainous stage, the last of the race, Pogacar gradually ate into the Frenchman's 1min 30sec lead.For a while, it looked like it would be touch and go, but Pogacar picked up the pace in the last couple of kilometres and with one kilometre left, his success looked inevitable.Just 200m later, he sauntered past Martinez and came home to win by seven seconds."It was really good to test the legs, the lungs on the climb, it was a really nice climb for that," said the 27-year-old Slovenian.Martinez said he was disappointed and rued Pogacar's insatiable will to win."We tried but he was just too strong in the end," said the 22-year-old, who had been part of an initial 11-man breakaway that broke clear with about 140km to ride."Tadej wins a lot of races and he keeps wanting to keep winning, so it's difficult. I knew he wasn't going to let me win."It was Pogacar's first victory at the Tour of Switzerland -- in his first appearance -- and means that he has now won six of the seven most historic week-long stage races.Having also won the Tour of Romandie in his first participation earlier this season, the only one he has yet to win is the Tour of the Basque Country -- where he was third in 2021 and sixth two years earlier. POGACAR ON A MISSION?Pogacar has seemed on a mission this season to tick off the few remaining major races he had yet to win, claiming Milan-San Remo glory in March and then coming close to winning Paris-Roubaix in April, when he was pipped by Wout van Aert.He has been in ominous form this week, laying down a marker ahead of his bid for a record-equalling fifth Tour de France victory next month.His overall margin of victory ahead of Ecuador's Richard Carapaz, 6:32, was simply stunning and will leave new Giro d'Italia champion Jonas Vingegaard with much to ponder at the Grande Boucle.Pogacar has 13 wins from just 16 race days this year compared to seven from 36 for Vingegaard, who is himself in the form of his life having won all three of his races, triumphing at Paris-Nice and the Tour of Catalonia before the Giro.Dutchman Bart Lemmen finished third in the stage from the breakaway just over a minute and half behind Pogacar, while Carapaz held onto his second place overall as he came home seventh at 2min.Czech Mathias Vacek came home 12th to finish third overall with Norway's Tobias Foss fourth.

France's Godon wins chaotic Paris-Nice seventh stage, Vingegaard in control

France's Dorian Godon won Saturday's shortened seventh and penultimate stage of the Paris-Nice with Dane Jonas Vingegaard poised for overall victory in a race thrown into chaos because of bad weather.On the eve of the final stage in Nice, two-time Tour de France winner Vingegaard still leads the general classification with a commanding 3min 22sec advantage on Colombian Dani Martinez."I never thought I'd win a mountain stage one day on Paris-Nice," joked Godon after triumphing in what was supposed to be the queen stage of the "Race to the Sun".But the penultimate stage was slashed from the planned 138.7km because of too much snow at the 1600m summit that was cut out of the race.Lashing rain on the Promenade des Anglais on Saturday morning meant organisers scratched the opening sector too."It was raining heavily, there were a lot of stones on the road. We absolutely couldn't take that risk," explained race director Yannick Talabardon.A snowplow had cleared the road in the medieval mountain village of Isola, where there had been snowfall in the morning.Even the impromptu start was chaotic, as the race's technical director Thierry Gouvenou was nearly knocked over by the peloton.And a few metres later, several riders went down at a roundabout.During the team presentation in the downpour, many riders were reluctant to start.Some preferred to laugh about it with Australian Jensen Plowright arriving with a scuba diving mask on his nose and French rider Axel Zingle in socks and sandals.The peloton breezed through just 47 kilometres albeit wrapped up in all weather gear in the Nice region usually known for balmy conditions at this time of year.Ineos rider Godon won the sprint finish ahead of Eritrean Biniam Girmay and Dutchman Cees Bol after only an hour of racing, securing France's first victory in this 84th edition."In my opinion, we could have stopped 10 kilometres earlier, because it was very slippery at the end and we saw several crashes," said Vingegaard.But that did not diminish Godon's joy, whose only regret was not winning in the blue-white-red jersey, as he was wearing a rain jacket in his team's colours.He was perfectly positioned by his team to secure the 17th victory of his career and his first with Ineos."A crazy pace, I was practically on the couch," the Frenchman laughed.On Sunday, he said he would give "300 percent" to try and bring his leader Kevin Vauquelin, currently fourth overall, onto the podium.And then the 29-year-old said he would celebrate."Before the start of the season, I bought a bottle of wine called Satisfied. It's at home and I wasn't allowed to open it until I won."That's the goal now."

Man Utd's Martinez hits back at Scholes after height jibes

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has challenged Paul Scholes to come to his house after the Old Trafford legend mocked the Argentine's height.Scholes and former United team-mate Nicky Butt poked fun at Martinez's chances of winning his duel with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in Saturday's derby.Butt joked the striker "would pick Martinez up and run with him" like a "dad after school running down the road with a little toddler" before Scholes laughed and said that "he'd score then throw him in the net".But in their first game under interim boss Michael Carrick, United restricted City to just one shot on target as Martinez kept Haaland in check during the 2-0 victory.When Scholes' comment about Haaland was put to Martinez, he said: "He can say whatever he wants. I told him already if he wants to say something to me, he can come to wherever he wants. To my house, wherever. I don't care."And I think, for me, I respect the relations when they want to help the club because everyone can talk on the television, but when you see them here face-to-face no-one says anything in your face."So, for me, I don't really care what they say. I just put focus on my performance, the performance of the team and I give everything to this club until my last day."Asked if criticism from the likes of Scholes and Butt gave him extra motivation, Martinez said: "No, no, nothing. It doesn't give me anything. My motivation is my family. That's it."Having seen Martinez's blast, Scholes didn't back down.Posting, on Instagram on Sunday, the former England midfielder: "Someone's had a good game, was really happy for you. Tea, no sugar please!"United's first win since Boxing Day was a much-needed boost after Ruben Amorim's recent sacking.Martinez appears not be have been a fan of Amorim, judging by his pointed assessment of Carrick's immediate impact."So different, so different. Different mentality, different guy," he said."He knows what it really means, this club. He sent us that message that he played here for a long, long time. He won everything."He's a big legend. He wants to help the club and I think we were in a tough situation and today was the best moment to change that."United still have a chance to salvage their troubled campaign by qualifying for next season's Champions League.They sit in fifth place, one point behind Liverpool, and Martinez expects Carrick will make a major difference to their fortunes."When you have a coach like Michael Carrick, who really knows, who really can share with you the energy of the club and what it means, it's so different," Martinez said.

Katara opens "From Cuba to Qatar: Horses, Fibers, and Memories" art exhibition

The Cultural Village Foundation, Katara, inaugurated the art exhibition "From Cuba to Qatar: Horses, Fibers, and Memories" by Cuban artist Yosvany Martinez this evening, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Doha. The opening ceremony was attended by Director General of Katara Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Ambassador of Cuba to Qatar Jose Enrique Enriquez Rodriguez, and diplomats, cultural figures, and members of the Cuban community in Qatar. Hosted at Building 47 and running until October 20, the exhibition features 29 artworks crafted using diverse techniques, including a sculpture made from natural fibers and plant-based paper. Martinez's pieces are distinguished by their artistic intimacy and reliance on organic materials such as the stalks of Espartio Macho, a native Cuban grass. The artist dries and dyes the fibers with natural pigments before incorporating them into his compositions, which depict horses and iconic landmarks of Havana, Cuba's capital. In his remarks at the opening, the Cuban ambassador expressed gratitude to Katara for its support, stating that this exhibition invites us to transcend geographical boundaries, where horses gallop freely and harmony emerges among the artworks. The recurring presence of horses reflects a shared cultural element between Cuba and Qatar. He added that the exhibition explores the richness of fibers and the cultural connections that unite peoples, contributing to mutual understanding, artistic collaboration, and intercultural dialogue. Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the ambassador emphasized the strength of cultural ties between Cuba and Qatar, praising the ongoing and fruitful cooperation between Katara and Cuban cultural institutions. He noted that Katara recently hosted a Cuban musical performance, further cementing this partnership. He affirmed that the exhibition "From Cuba to Qatar: Horses, Fibers, and Memories" embodies his collaboration and reflects a shared commitment to fostering cultural and artistic dialogue between the two nations. He stressed that culture remains a vital bridge for human connection and mutual understanding. In a separate statement to QNA, artist Yosvany Martinez explained that he employed a range of artistic techniques in the exhibition, most notably fiber art. He described the fibers as a type of grass native to Cuban fields, which he harvests, dries, and dyes with natural colors before meticulously assembling them into his artworks on cardboard. Each piece begins with a pencil sketch, forming the foundation for his intricate compositions. Martinez further shared that he later expanded his artistic repertoire to include techniques such as oil on canvas and linocut printing, a method involving engraving on linoleum. He explained that he uses a fine carving tool known as a gubia to achieve intricate details, before passing the artwork through a printing press to complete the process. Concluding his remarks, Martinez revealed that several of his oil paintings featured in the exhibition are dedicated to the State of Qatar, as a tribute to the growing cultural ties between the two nations. He emphasized that he paints using a fine brush with individual bristles, allowing him to create textures that mimic the feel of natural fibers, symbolizing the unity of nature, art, and human memory.
