French swimming star Leon Marchand powered to his second gold of the European championships in Paris on Sunday, easing to victory in the 400m freestyle, an event he rarely races.Clocking 3min 43.14sec, he won by a margin of 1.32 seconds over Hungary's Oliver Papai. The bronze went to Germany's Lukas Martens, the world record holder.Four-time Olympic champion Marchand had already won gold in the 200m butterfly final in Paris and had been the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 400m freestyle heats earlier Sunday.Marchand was one of the stars of the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning gold in the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke, as well as the 200m individual medley and the 400m medley.He also took a bronze in the 4x100m medley relay.The 24-year-old is racing a reduced schedule at the Europeans as he continues to recover from a thigh injury.Earlier, Hungarian Hubert Kos won the men's 200m individual medley title in the absence of Marchand for his third gold of the championships.Kos completed the four-length race in 1:54.24 for his third gold in Paris after the 200m backstroke and men's 100m freestyle relay.For the 23-year-old it was also his third European gold medal in the event, following victories in 2022 and 2024.Kos built a significant lead during the backstroke leg before seeing Spain's Hugo Gonzalez charge towards him. Kos held firm in the final metres to secure the win.He finished two-tenths of a second ahead of Gonzalez, while 18-year-old Russian Mikhail Shcherbakov, competing under a neutral flag, took the bronze. Golden finale for QuadarellaItaly's Simona Quadarella finished in style by winning the women's 400m freestyle final, just days after securing titles in the 800m and 1,500m events.After holding third place for much of the race, Quadarella (4:01.74) surged ahead in the final 100 metres to see off Germans Isabel Gose and Maya Werner.The 27-year-old had previously achieved a 400m, 800m, and 1,500m freestyle treble at the 2018 European Championships in Rome.She also holds three long-course world titles and an Olympic bronze medal, won in the 800m at the Tokyo Games in 2020.Britain's Keanna Macinnes won the women's 200m butterfly as Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte claimed gold in the women's 100m breaststroke.Macinnes was well ahead of the European record pace for much of the race, but lost ground on the final length to clock 2:05.90.Meilutyte, the Olympic 100m breaststroke champion in 2012, won the European 50m breaststroke for the third time in a time of 29.93sec.Defending champion Apostolos Christou of Greece retained his 100m backstroke gold medal as Ukrainian teenager Nikita Sheremet won his first title in the men's 50m freestyle on the final day of competition. 

Romania's David Popovici and Italy's Simona Quadarella added to their gold-medal hauls at the European swimming championships on Friday while French star Leon Marchand booked his ticket to the 200m butterfly final as he returns from injury.Popovici was crowned European champion in the 200m freestyle for the third consecutive time with Quadarella taking the women's 1500m continental title for a fourth time.The 21-year-old Popovici doubled his tally in Paris after his victory in the 100m freestyle earlier in the competition.The Olympic champion led the race from start to finish, swimming neck and neck with his rivals before pulling away in the final metres.Popovici touched the wall in 1min 44.15sec, edging out Lithuanian Tomas Navikonis by 0.40sec. Great Britain's James Guy clocked 1min 44.87sec for bronze.Quadarella added the 1500m freestyle gold to the 800m freestyle title she won on Tuesday.The 27-year-old dominated her rivals, clocking 15min 46.22sec to finish ahead of Germans Isabel Gose and Maya Werner. The podium was the same as for the 800m.The Italian, an Olympic and 2024 world bronze medallist, followed on from her European titles in 2018, 2020, and 2022 in the distance.Meanwhile Marchand, who became the Olympic champion in his event in the French capital two years ago, qualified for Saturday's 200m butterfly final with the fastest time of the semi-finals.In the Olympic pool in Saint-Denis to the north of Paris, Marchand completed his race in 1min 53.95sec after easing through the heats earlier in the day."It was good, I really enjoyed myself. It was just in the last 50 metres that I struggled; my hips started to drop and my head was a bit higher than usual," said Marchand."I hope I'll have a bit more energy to finish tomorrow evening." First European goldA four-time Olympic champion and seven-time world champion, Marchand will be aiming to win a first ever continental title on Saturday.Hampered by a thigh injury picked up at French nationals in June, the 24-year-old has reduced his programme at these championships.Individually he is competing in just two events - the 200m butterfly and Sunday's 400m freestyle.However, he has already won a silver medal with the 4x200m freestyle relay with France this week.Belgian Roos Vanotterdijk successfully defended her 100m butterfly title while Russia's Evgeniia Chikunova, competing under a neutral flag, won the 200m breaststroke.Vanotterdijk, 21, the world silver medallist over the distance, led the way in 56.08sec.She took the gold 0.31sec ahead of Germany's Angelina Kohler. Russian Daria Klepikova, also competing as a neutral, won bronze in 56.76sec.Chikunova clocked 2min 19.32sec to finish ahead of Great Britain's Angharad Evans (2:21.21), who won the 100m breaststroke title on Wednesday, while Ireland's Mona McSharry took bronze.Czech Miroslav Knedla won the men's 50m backstroke in 24.11sec, edging Kliment Kolesnikov by just 0.01sec with a second Russian, Pavel Samusenko, taking bronze just 0.03 off the pace.Russian swimmers, competing under a neutral flag, won the gold medal in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay as France were disqualified for a false start.The Russians, led by Egor Kornev, who won 100m silver on Wednesday, finished in 3min 19.95sec.The Netherlands, led by Marrit Steenbergen, took silver, ahead of an Italian team which included teenage star Sara Curtis. 

Britain won both the men's and women's 4x200m freestyle relays on the opening day of the European swimming championships on Monday as French swim star Leon Marchand took silver with his team as he returns from injury.The four-woman British team of Freya Colbert, Abbie Wood, Leah Schlosshan and Freya Anderson crushed their rivals and narrowly missed out on the continental record with their time of 7min 45.93sec.Behind them, the battle for the podium was tight between Hungary, Germany and Russia.Ultimately the Hungarian women took silver in 7:49.09, ahead of Russia, competing under a neutral flag (7:49.13). The German women missed the podium by a hundredth of a second.Moments later, the British men emulated their compatriots winning gold in 7:01.52, thanks to Matthew Richards, Jack McMillan, James Guy and Duncan Scott.France were spurred on by the home crowd and four-time Olympic champion Marchand, but finished second in 7:02.23. The bronze medal went to Germany (7:02.28)."It's my first European medal and a team one as well, so it's cool, I'm happy," said Marchand."I was a bit nervous about going first, as it was a first for me. Plus I wasn't quite sure where I stood in terms of form, so this was reassuring."Earlier Russia's Ilia Borodin took the men's 4x200m freestyle gold as Olympic and world champion Marchand skipped that event.Borodin clocked 4:08.17 with Italy's Alberto Razzetti taking silver in 4:10.40. Britain's Max Litchfield won bronze in 4:11.58.The 23-year-old Borodin, competing as a neutral athlete as a result of the invasion of Ukraine, had won bronze at the world championships in Singapore last year.A major rival of Marchand during their junior careers, Borodin would undoubtedly have welcomed the chance to face the world record holder (4:02.50) in the event.However, the Frenchman has been forced to cut back on his events this week because of a lingering thigh injury that severely hinders his ability to swim the breaststroke.Marchand is entered, however, in the 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle, and the relays with the French team.  

Swimming star Leon Marchand has cut back on the events he will compete in at the European championships starting Monday because of a lingering thigh injury.The French federation confirmed Saturday that Marchand will not compete in the 200m and 400m individual medley events in Paris.The Frenchman had already ruled out the 200m breaststroke but remains entered in the 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle that place less strain on the adductor muscles.He may also participate in one or two relays with the French team."The injury is healing well, and recovery is largely complete. However, since competing in the 200m and 400m individual medley carries a non-negligible risk of recurrence, and to safeguard the remainder of the competition, the decision was made not to enter these races," explained team doctor Sebastien Le Garrec.The four-time Olympic champion injured his adductor during the 200m breaststroke heats at the French championships in June, subsequently withdrawing from the rest of the competition.He suffered a setback during a training session in Marseille three weeks later.Earlier this month, he had confirmed his participation in the European championships, though he was doubtful regarding the 400m individual medley.Ultimately, he decided to withdraw from the shorter distance as well as a precautionary measure.The withdrawal from his two signature events is a major setback for the 24-year-old, who had made these championships the primary goal of his season.He had also stated he wanted to break his own world record in the 400m individual medley this season."It's something I want to do in the near future, and I imagine doing it in Paris at the European championships would be great," he had said. 

Swimming star Leon Marchand pulled out of the French nationals on Tuesday with a leg muscle issue just weeks before the European Championships.During the 200m breaststroke heats on Monday, Marchand felt sharp pain in the adductor muscle of his right leg, his team said."To avoid any aggravation and to protect his health, Leon has decided in consultation with his technical and medical staff not to continue competing," a team statement added.It was not specified whether the injury would jeopardise his participation in the European Championships from August 10-16, a competition which would mark his return to Paris two years after his triumph at the 2024 Olympics.Early on Monday, the 24-year-old had placed a surprise third in his 200m breaststroke heat in 2min 16.16sec.After swimming the first part of the race at a good pace, Marchand visibly eased with television footage showing him clutching his right thigh at the end of the race.The four-time Olympic gold medallist and seven-time world champion had gotten off to a flying start to the French championships, clocking the fifth-fastest time in history in the 400m individual medley final on Saturday.The withdrawal does not jeopardise his qualification for Europeans having already secured his spot with his performance on Saturday.He could still be selected for other events if all qualification quotas are not filled by the end of the competition in Saint-Etienne and provided he is fit.
