Man United dent Man City's title bid as Arsenal held

Michael Carrick made a flying start to life as Manchester United boss against Manchester City but Premier League leaders Arsenal missed a chance to pull nine points clear.Sorry Tottenham slipped to defeat against relegation-threatened West Ham, further increasing the pressure on beleaguered boss Thomas Frank, while Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Burnley. Carrick's first game of his second temporary spell in charge of the Red Devils could barely have gone better in a dominant 2-0 win at Old Trafford.The former United midfielder was appointed as head coach until the end of the campaign following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month. The 44-year-old, who was also briefly United's caretaker boss in 2021, said ahead of his first game that there was still "magic" at United, and his team put on a memorable show.Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu capped an energetic and incisive display by United, who could have won by a far more comfortable margin. "Great start. No getting away from that," said Carrick. "The boys were fantastic. Consistency is the key to any success," he added. "If you could find that, then you're onto a winner."Guardiola admitted that his team – winless in four league games this year – were outplayed by Carrick's inspired United. "The better team won," said the City boss. "We weren't at the level required to win this game."Arsenal are seven points clear at the top despite being held to a 0-0 draw for the second league game in a row at Nottingham Forest. A frustrated Arteta, chasing a first Premier League title for the Gunners since 2004, felt that his side should have been awarded a penalty, believing Ola Aina had handled the ball."We created four big, big, big chances and a clear penalty, but we weren't able to win the game," said the Spaniard. "I've just seen the replays. I think it's a clear intention to clear the ball inside and it's a clear penalty so I don't understand why it's not been given."Third-placed Aston Villa can close to within four points of Arsenal if they beat Everton today.The mood at Tottenham darkened further after Spurs slipped to a 2-1 defeat against West Ham, who had not won a Premier League match since early November. Spurs fans turned on Frank and chanted "you're getting sacked in the morning" after Callum Wilson struck a stoppage-time winner.Spurs, 14th in the table, have won just two home league games this season, leaving Frank, in his first campaign in charge, under enormous pressure. "It's tough to take, it hurts a lot," the Spurs boss told Sky Sports. "The boys put everything in, and that's a sign of a squad that is fighting, doing everything they can to try and win."Nuno Espirito Santo's West Ham finished the day five points behind Forest, who are just above the relegation zone. Defending champions Liverpool are now unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions but dropped two valuable points against struggling Burnley at Anfield.Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz scored his third league goal since his arrival but the visitors drew level in the 65th minute when Marcus Edwards placed his shot beyond the reach of Alisson Becker. "It feels like a defeat," said Wirtz. "When we had so many shots and so many on target, I think we had to score more goals. "But some days are like this -- you try everything but in the end it doesn't go in the goal."Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior, who replaced the departed Enzo Maresca earlier this month, watched as his side saw off high-flying London rivals Brentford 2-0. Joao Pedro gave the Blues the lead in the first half and Cole Palmer doubled the advantage from the spot in the 76th minute. Sunderland beat Crystal Palace 2-1 while Leeds scored late on to beat Fulham 1-0, remaining eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Man Utd's Martinez hits back at Scholes after height jibes

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has challenged Paul Scholes to come to his house after the Old Trafford legend mocked the Argentine's height.Scholes and former United team-mate Nicky Butt poked fun at Martinez's chances of winning his duel with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in Saturday's derby.Butt joked the striker "would pick Martinez up and run with him" like a "dad after school running down the road with a little toddler" before Scholes laughed and said that "he'd score then throw him in the net".But in their first game under interim boss Michael Carrick, United restricted City to just one shot on target as Martinez kept Haaland in check during the 2-0 victory.When Scholes' comment about Haaland was put to Martinez, he said: "He can say whatever he wants. I told him already if he wants to say something to me, he can come to wherever he wants. To my house, wherever. I don't care."And I think, for me, I respect the relations when they want to help the club because everyone can talk on the television, but when you see them here face-to-face no-one says anything in your face."So, for me, I don't really care what they say. I just put focus on my performance, the performance of the team and I give everything to this club until my last day."Asked if criticism from the likes of Scholes and Butt gave him extra motivation, Martinez said: "No, no, nothing. It doesn't give me anything. My motivation is my family. That's it."Having seen Martinez's blast, Scholes didn't back down.Posting, on Instagram on Sunday, the former England midfielder: "Someone's had a good game, was really happy for you. Tea, no sugar please!"United's first win since Boxing Day was a much-needed boost after Ruben Amorim's recent sacking.Martinez appears not be have been a fan of Amorim, judging by his pointed assessment of Carrick's immediate impact."So different, so different. Different mentality, different guy," he said."He knows what it really means, this club. He sent us that message that he played here for a long, long time. He won everything."He's a big legend. He wants to help the club and I think we were in a tough situation and today was the best moment to change that."United still have a chance to salvage their troubled campaign by qualifying for next season's Champions League.They sit in fifth place, one point behind Liverpool, and Martinez expects Carrick will make a major difference to their fortunes."When you have a coach like Michael Carrick, who really knows, who really can share with you the energy of the club and what it means, it's so different," Martinez said.

Brighton knock out Man United, Arsenal’s Martinelli hits hat-trick

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup with a meek 2-1 home defeat to Brighton Sunday as Gabriel Martinelli’s hat-trick fired Arsenal to a 4-1 win at Portsmouth to reach round four. United interim boss Darren Fletcher could only watch on in horror as the Red Devils’ last chance of silverware this season and likely his chances of landing the job until the end of the season went up in smoke at Old Trafford. Fletcher’s men were left to rue not making more of a positive start before Brajan Gruda fired the visitors in front on 12 minutes from Danny Welbeck’s cross. The roles were reversed midway through the second half as Welbeck lashed into the top corner against his former club. There were persistent chants targeting United co-owners the Glazer family and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe as the discontent at Old Trafford grew. And any hope those in charge of the club had for a bounce following the removal of Ruben Amorim has proved very short-lived. Benjamin Sesko’s late header set up a grandstand finish, but it proved too little, too late for Fletcher. A red card for teenager Shea Lacey in stoppage time for dissent rounded off United’s miserable afternoon. Martinelli shrugged off the backlash to his clash with stricken Liverpool defender Conor Bradley as Arsenal reached the fourth round for the first time in three years. Championship side Portsmouth were dreaming of an upset against the Premier League leaders when they went in front after just three minutes through Colby Bishop. Mikel Arteta had made 10 changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Thursday. Martinelli drew stinging criticism for trying to push Bradley off the pitch in the closing stages after the Northern Irishman hit the ground with a serious knee injury. Liverpool confirmed the right-back will need surgery and will miss the rest of the season. The Brazilian apologised to Bradley after the game and did not seem affected by the furore at Fratton Park. “That’s personality, come in and talk on the pitch,” said Arteta. “To play for a big club you need a big personality because it can be that (being at the centre of a controversial incident), it can be an action that you miss, it can be something that costs you a game, and three days later there is a game, so you need to lift yourself up and make it count.” Arsenal could rely on their threat from set-pieces to turn the tie around. The Pompey lead lasted only five minutes as Andre Dozzell turned into his own net under pressure from Christian Norgaard. Martinelli then flicked in the first of his three goals before Noni Madueke missed the chance to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot when the England international fired wide. Gabriel Jesus teed up Martinelli to kill the tie off early in the second period before he completed his hat-trick from another Arsenal corner. West Ham eased the mounting pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo as new signing Taty Castellanos scored his first goal for the club to beat QPR 2-1 after extra-time. Castellanos has been signed to dig them out of trouble at the bottom of the Premier League and the £26mn arrival from Lazio bulleted home a header from Crysencio Summerville’s cross to secure a much-needed win. Leeds needed a second-half fightback to beat Derby County 3-1 and book their place in the fourth round. League One Mansfield held off Sheffield United to book their place in round four with a 4-3 win at Bramall Lane. Norwich, Hull and West Brom also progressed to the last 32.

Man Utd coaching job was not in wildest dreams, says Fletcher

Manchester United interim coach Darren Fletcher said Tuesday he did not think he would manage the club in his “wildest dreams” as he prepares for his first game following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese was axed on Monday after 14 months at Old Trafford after an explosive post-match interview following his team’s 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday. Under-18s coach and former United player Fletcher was put in charge for today’s match at Burnley and faced the press for the first time Tuesday. The former Scotland international is expected to remain in place until the club appoints a caretaker boss, with United planning to name Amorim’s permanent successor at the end of the season. Fletcher, 41, said the past 24 hours at Old Trafford had been “surreal”. “It’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team,” he said. “I don’t even think it was in my wildest dreams that that was something that could potentially happen, even thinking about playing for the club and stuff like that. But to lead out the team is an amazing honour and something I am really proud to do. It’s not (happened) in the circumstances that I expected it to happen so that obviously is something that doesn’t sit quite easy with me, but I just have to think I’ve got a job to do and I’ve got to lead the team tomorrow and think of the great honour and pride in doing that.” Fletcher said conversations with the club’s hierarchy had focused on today’s game against struggling Burnley and they would speak again after the match. Fletcher, United’s technical director between 2021 and 2024, was asked whether he wanted to try to earn the manager’s job on a full-time basis. “Honestly it’s not something I’ve thought about,” he said. “I’m focusing on Burnley. I think that discussion is for after the game. There has been that much going on and it has all happened so quickly that all my concentration, efforts and thoughts have gone into Burnley.”

Amorim sacked by Man Utd after 14-month reign

Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United on Monday, bringing a dramatic end to his turbulent 14-month spell as manager of the struggling Premier League giants.The dismissal of the Portuguese follows growing tensions with Old Trafford bosses, including director of football Jason Wilcox, over recent days.The club, sixth in the Premier League table after a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday, issued a statement saying Amorim had "departed his role as head coach of Manchester United", thanking him for his service."The club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change," United said in their statement."This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."Current under-18s coach Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder and technical director between 2021 and 2024, will take charge of the team against struggling Burnley on Wednesday.The BBC said the club were planning to appoint a caretaker boss for the rest of the season.Names in the frame for the full-time job include Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea last week, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and former England manager Gareth Southgate.Rising tensionsAmorim had hinted at deep frustrations on Friday, suggesting he was not being fully backed in the transfer market.And he made a string of eye-catching comments after Sunday's draw at Elland Road, where he stressed he was United's manager rather than "just the coach".The Portuguese told the scouting department and Wilcox "to do their job" during a blockbuster end to a post-match press conference that raised major doubts over his future.And he repeatedly suggested to the media that he would leave when his contract expired in 18 months' time.But reports on Monday said United's decision to axe their manager was due to the lack of progress rather than a power struggle.The dismissal is a dismal end for Amorim, who won just 25 of his 63 games at United in all competitions during the shortest reign for a permanent manager since David Moyes was sacked just eight months into his tenure in 2014.He had the worst win ratio (32 percent), the worst goals-conceded-per-game ratio (1.53) and the lowest clean-sheet ratio (15 percent) of any United boss in the Premier League.Amorim arrived at Old Trafford to replace Erik ten Hag in November 2024 as one of the most sought-after coaches in world football following a successful stint at Sporting Lisbon, where he won two league titles.But he was powerless to stop United's slide to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League - their worst campaign for 51 years - at one stage describing his team as "maybe the worst" in the history of the club.Amorim had the chance to end the 2024/25 campaign on a high in Bilbao but United lost the Europa League final against Tottenham and missed out on European football this season as a result.The club backed their manager in the summer transfer window, spending more than £200 million ($269 million) on new signings including Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha.But they have again flattered to deceive, winning just eight of their 20 league games so far and falling 17 points behind leaders Arsenal.Amorim has been hit by injuries and a number of players are on Africa Cup of Nations duty but he has been criticised for sticking rigidly to his preferred 3-4-3 formation despite evidence it was not the best fit for his players.His exit leaves the club searching for their seventh permanent manager since the retirement of Alex Ferguson, who left as a Premier League champion in 2013.Since then, apart from the occasional cup success, the 20-time English champions have been also-rans, overshadowed by bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

Manchester United 'wanted me to leave', claims Fernandes

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes told Portuguese media the Premier League club had wanted to sell him this summer after receiving interest from Saudi Arabia.But the 31-year-old claimed manager Ruben Amorim still had him in his plans and that convinced him to stay at Old Trafford."My passion and empathy for the club were the same, but there comes a point where money becomes more important to them than you," Fernandes told Canal 11, a channel owned by the Portuguese Football Federation, on Monday."The club wanted me to leave. I said it to the directors and I think they didn't have the courage to make that decision because the coach wanted me."But if I had said I wanted to leave, even if the coach wanted me to stay, the club would have let me go."Fernandes, who has 103 goals in 307 appearances for Man Utd in all competitions since arriving in 2020, was also reportedly hurt by the club hierarchy's willingness to part ways with him."The feeling I got from the club was, 'if you leave, it's not so bad for us'. That hurt me a little," he said, according to comments reported on the website of Portuguese sports daily A Bola.The playmaker said he had considered a move to Saudi Arabia, following in the footsteps of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo who made the move to the kingdom in 2023 after his acrimonious departure from Old Trafford.

Man United stretch Liverpool losing streak to 4 games

Liverpool slumped to a fourth consecutive defeat for the first time in 11 years as Manchester United won 2-1 Sunday to end their near decade-long wait for victory at Anfield.Harry Maguire’s 84th minute header secured back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time in Ruben Amorim’s tenure as United boss. Twelve minutes from time, Cody Gakpo had cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s opener after just 61 seconds.Defeat leaves Liverpool four points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the table and Arne Slot still searching for answers in how to get the right blend after splashing out nearly £450 million ($604 million) on new players in the transfer market.United close to within two points of their historic rivals and up to ninth in the table to ease the pressure on Amorim after his biggest win in nearly a year in charge.Liverpool had only lost one of the previous 14 Premier League meetings between the sides and United had not tasted victory at Anfield since the early days of Jurgen Klopp’s reign in January 2016.However, the Reds are in a state of flux after transforming the squad that stormed to the title last season and the tragic loss of Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in July. After three consecutive defeats for the first time in Slot’s reign, Liverpool could barely have imagined a worse start.Mbeumo sped past Virgil van Dijk with ease before firing past Giorgi Mamardashvili from Amad Diallo’s pass after barely a minute. The home side and support were furious that play was not stopped in the build-up after Alexis MacAllister went down with a head injury, inflicted by his own captain Van Dijk.Slot left £100mn signing Florian Wirtz on the bench for the second consecutive game as he looked in vain to find the right balance between defence and attack.Gakpo should have levelled for the defending champions when he hit the post from Mohamed Salah’s through ball in Liverpool’s one flowing move of the first half. However, it was United who should have been further in front by half-time.Bruno Fernandes spurned a glorious chance to double the Red Devils’ lead when he hit the outside of the post when unmarked from the edge of the area.At the other end, Senne Lammens was rarely troubled in the first 45 minutes, but produced a big save when called upon to deny Alexander Isak his first Premier League goal since joining Liverpool for a British transfer record £125mn. A Gakpo deflected cross then came back off the post and the Dutchman rattled the woodwork for a third time early in the second half.Slot turned to his near £200 million in forward options off the bench as Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike were introduced on the hour mark to join Salah, Gakpo and Isak in a five-man attack.Salah has scored more goals than any other player in this fixture, but his lack of form showed in a wild finish to slice wide with just Lammens to beat at the back post. Liverpool’s wealth of attacking talent finally broke the door down when Federico Chiesa, who had replaced Isak moments earlier, drilled in a low cross that Gakpo converted from point blank range.Yet, their defensive frailties meant parity only lasted six minutes as Maguire was left unmarked to head in Fernandes’s looping cross. Gakpo should still have rescued a point when he headed wide with the goal gaping from Jeremie Frimpong’s inviting delivery.Rogers and Buendia inspire Aston VillaMorgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia inspired Aston Villa’s fightback to win 2-1 against Tottenham Sunday as the north Londoners suffered more misery on home turf. Rodrigo Bentancur put Thomas Frank’s side ahead early in the first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But Rogers equalised with a superb strike before the interval and Buendia came off the bench to seal the points in the closing stages.Tottenham’s woeful home form in the Premier League – 11 defeats and just three wins in 18 league games – has proved a major issue for Frank since he replaced the sacked Ange Postecoglou in the close-season.While the majority of those home losses came under Postecoglou last term, Frank’s short tenure has produced mixed results at the club’s 62,000-seat stadium, with boos audible after a defeat to Bournemouth in August and a 1-1 draw with lowly Wolves last month. The end of Tottenham’s seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions left them in sixth place after the second defeat in Frank’s eight league games.

Liverpool’s Slot calls for improvements ahead of United game

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said “results don’t lie” after a three-game losing streak as he called for defensive improvements ahead of Manchester United’s visit to Anfield Sunday. The Premier League champions won their opening seven games of the season in all competitions, but poor performances were masked by a series of late goals. Liverpool suffered defeats to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray in the Champions League and Chelsea before the international break, leaving them to fall one point behind title rivals Arsenal. After romping to the title last season, Liverpool splashed out nearly £450mn ($604mn) on new signings, paying club-record fees for Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, neither of whom have yet scored a Premier League goal.At the other end of the pitch, Slot’s men have conceded two or more goals in four of their seven Premier League games. “We’ve played 10, won seven and lost three. The three loses were by close margins,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference. “But as I keep saying, we should not be dependent on such margins. Results don’t lie – if you lose three in a row then you have to do better. We are aware of that and we have to react.”Mohamed Salah’s sensational form propelled Liverpool to the title last season, but the 33-year-old Egyptian has so far struggled to adjust to the changes made to the side during the transfer window. Slot pinpointed a lack of game-changing moments from his star-studded forward line and problems at set-pieces.“We haven’t created as many chances as last season and there’s a reason for that – the playing style of the opponent, and we have to find answers to that,” he said. “The first answer is not to concede as many goals as we did. If a team scores one or two goals then we need three goals. In the first half of last season we mainly got these goals from a special moment from one of our front three. The second half (of the season) we needed set pieces against a low block. This season we haven’t had those special moments and we haven’t scored from set pieces. It’s clear that conceding four goals from set pieces is far too much for a team that wants to compete.”Goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains out with a hamstring injury, but there was better injury news for Liverpool as Ryan Gravenberch is fit to face United despite coming off injured for the Netherlands during the international break.Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said the support of co-owner Jim Ratcliffe will mean little if he fails to turn around the club’s fortunes. In an interview last week, British billionaire Ratcliffe said Amorim has to “demonstrate he is a great coach over three years”.Amorim is approaching a year in the Old Trafford hotseat and is yet to win back-to-back Premier League games. Doing so away to Liverpool at Anfield tomorrow would be a major step in the right direction and the Portuguese knows he will be under intense pressure until results improve.“You know, I know and Jim knows that football is not like that,” Amorim said at his pre-match press conference, referring to Ratcliffe’s timescale. “The most important thing is the next game.”United ended the season 15th in the Premier League last term – their lowest finish for 51 years – and squandered a chance to qualify for the Champions League when they lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. They have fared little better this season, sitting 10th in the Premier League after losing three of their first seven league games and crashing to a shock League Cup defeat at fourth-tier Grimsby.Yet Amorim has so far retained the support of Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. “First of all, I can feel it. It’s not just that thing that people talk, I feel it every day. Sometimes the pressure that I put on the team, on myself, is so much bigger than them,” said Amorim. “I know that it’s going to take a while but I don’t want to think like that. I said that last year. I think it also helps our fans to understand that the leadership understands that it’s going to take a while. But, at the same moment, I don’t like that because it will give a feeling that we have time to work things out. I don’t want that feeling here in our club. It’s good to feel the support but we need to prove in football, and especially in big clubs, that in every weekend we are ready to win games.”A 2-0 victory over Sunderland before the international break eased the scrutiny on Amorim’s position.

Man Utd still winless after Fulham draw, Everton win to open new stadium

Manchester United remain without a Premier League win this season after being held 1-1 at Fulham Sunday, while a Jack Grealish-inspired Everton opened their new stadium with a 2-0 victory over Brighton.Ruben Amorim's United were left to rue Bruno Fernandes' wayward first-half penalty as they were pegged back at Craven Cottage.Rodrigo Muniz's own-goal put United in front on the hour mark, but Emile Smith Rowe came off the bench to rescue a point for Fulham.Amorim is seeking an upturn on a disastrous 15th-placed finish last season, but so far his new £200mn ($270mn) forward line of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, who again started on the bench, is yet to fire.Despite an encouraging performance, United lost 1-0 to title-chasing Arsenal in their season opener last weekend and will feel another two points slipped away in west London.Fulham, though, felt the visitors got the better of two controversial calls.United's penalty was awarded after a VAR review for grappling by Calvin Bassey on Mason Mount.Fernandes is normally reliable from the spot, but blasted his effort high over the bar. When United did finally get their first goal of the season it came via a Fulham body as Muniz deflected Leny Yoro's header into his own net. However, the home side were furious that this time VAR did not intervene for a push by Yoro on Bassey.Fulham still managed to rescue a point when former Arsenal midfielder Smith Rowe's run into the box was not tracked and he turned in Alex Iwobi's cross 17 minutes from time.Everton's new eraAfter an emotional goodbye to Goodison Park, the club's home since 1892, Everton are hoping the move to a new 53,000 capacity stadium will rekindle their bygone glory days.Only four clubs have won more English top-flight titles than Everton's nine. However, they have not won a major trophy for 30 years and spent their final seasons at Goodison battling relegation."We're trying to find a way of moving the club on. I think this is a big step forward for Everton," said manager David Moyes.Grealish has so far been the marquee new addition to Moyes' squad and showed glimpses of the talent that saw Manchester City pay Aston Villa £100 million for him four years ago, providing the assist for both goals.Iliman Ndiaye scored the final goal at Goodison against Southampton in May and made more history with the first goal at Everton's new home.Grealish was the creator with a drilled left foot cross that Ndiaye timed his run perfectly to meet at the back post on 23 minutes.Brighton should not have come away from Merseyside empty-handed but wasted a series of chances.Kaoru Mitoma struck the bar and Jan Paul van Hecke's effort came back off the post, while Danny Welbeck spooned over with the goal gaping.James Garner doubled Everton's lead early in the second period with a blistering strike from Grealish's lay-off.Brighton still had the chance to set up a nervy finale, but Jordan Pickford saved Welbeck's poor penalty to round off a memorable afternoon for the Toffees.Nuno no goNottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo insisted he wants to remain in charge after his side's 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.Callum Hudson-Odoi rescued a point for Forest after Ismaila Sarr's first-half opener for Palace.Nuno said on Friday his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had deteriorated as odds on him being the first Premier League manager of the season to be sacked were slashed."That is nonsense. That does not make any kind of sense," said the Portuguese coach on whether he is trying to engineer an exit from the club.
