Jeremy Doku’s stoppage-time strike salvaged Manchester City a 3-3 draw at Everton, but a second half collapse handed the destiny of the Premier League title back to Arsenal last night. The Gunners now just need to win their final three games to end a 22-year wait to become the champions of England. City remain five points adrift of Mikel Arteta’s team, with a game in hand, and will struggle to recover from the manner of their implosion at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side appeared to be cruising to victory when Doku opened the scoring at the end of a dominant first half. However, an error-strewn second period was punished as Thierno Barry scored twice for the Toffees, either side of Jake O’Brien’s header. Erling Haaland and then a sensational effort from Doku in the 96th minute did however rescue a point which could ultimately keep City in the race. Arsenal visit relegation-threatened West Ham on Sunday before hosting Burnley and visiting Crystal Palace on the final day of the campaign. Two Arsenal victories since City last played in the league had ramped up the pressure on Guardiola’s side. City’s first team had gone the best part of two weeks without a proper outing after Guardiola heavily rotated for last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final win over Southampton. The visitors looked fresh rather than rusty as Everton were penned back inside their own box for practically the entire first half. City’s pressure finally found its reward two minutes before half-time when Rayan Cherki found Doku, who curled a shot into Jordan Pickford’s top right-hand corner. Things could have been even worse for the Toffees before the break as Michael Keane escaped with just a yellow card for a wild lunge on Doku. That decision proved to be vital as City paid a heavy price for a serious of basic defensive errors. Twice Guardiola’s men did not heed a warning that an Everton equaliser was coming. Gianluigi Donnarumma parried Iliman Ndiaye’s effort back into the danger area but Merlin Rohl was not alive to the rebound. Ndiaye then had a glorious chance after an error from Matheus Nunes but again could not beat the giant Italian in the City goal. When the equaliser finally arrived, City were again architects of their own downfall. Marc Guehi’s underhit passback handed Barry the simple task of slotting past the stranded Donnarumma. Another casual City mistake moments later led to Everton’s second. This time Abdukodir Khusanov was caught in possession by Ndiaye and bailed out by a last-ditch challenge from Guehi. But from the resulting corner, O’Brien rose highest to power home a header. Barry prodded home a third for Everton from Rohl’s deflected cross with City all at sea from a rapid counter-attack. Within seconds they had a lifeline, though, as straight from kick-off Mateo Kovacic played in Haaland to halve the arrears. Doku delivered a dagger to Everton’s hopes of European football next season right at the death. But it may have come too little, too late to rescue City’s chances of a seventh title in nine years. 

Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract at Manchester United that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031, bringing an end to months of uncertainty over his future.The 21-year-old, who joined United's academy in 2014, has already made 98 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals, including in the FA Cup final win against Manchester City in 2024.Mainoo fell out of favour under former boss Ruben Amorim and had a request to leave on loan in August rejected.He started just one game all season - the League Cup loss to Grimsby on penalties - under the Portuguese, who was sacked in January.That led to growing speculation that the future of the boyhood United fan could lie away from Old Trafford.But Mainoo has been rejuvenated under Michael Carrick, who was appointed as head coach until the end of the season after Amorim was fired.The midfielder has started all but one game since then, playing a key role as United have climbed to third in the Premier League, all but securing a return to the Champions League."Manchester United has always been my home - this special club means everything to my family," said Mainoo."I have grown up seeing the impact that our club has on our city, and I relish the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt."He added: "We can all feel the momentum building inside the club. I am determined to step up and play my role in helping Manchester United to regularly fight for major trophies in the years ahead."Jason Wilcox, United's director of football, hailed Mainoo as one of the most "naturally gifted young footballers in the world"."His technical ability, dedicated professionalism and humble personality make him the perfect role model for our young players and a true credit to our outstanding academy system," he said."We are delighted that Kobbie has extended his stay here and have full confidence that he will develop into one of the best players in the world, ready to play a pivotal role in a Manchester United team challenging for the biggest honours."Mainoo has also regained his place in the England set-up under Thomas Tuchel, featuring in friendlies in March against Uruguay and Japan. 

Manchester City beat stumbling Arsenal 2-1 to take charge of the Premier League title race as Liverpool strengthened their push for a Champions League place. Mikel Arteta’s Gunners have been in pole position for months but are wobbling at the worst time as they seek to win the English title for the first time in 22 years. Erling Haaland was City’s matchwinner, netting in the 65th minute after Rayan Cherki’s superb opener was cancelled out by Kai Havertz, who took advantage of a huge mistake by City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Arteta was on his knees in the closing minutes as Havertz headed over the bar when presented with a golden chance to equalise. The result in front of City’s jubilant fans means that if Pep Guardiola’s City win their match at Burnley in midweek, they would be top of the table. The are now in pole position to win their seventh Premier League title in nine seasons, while Arsenal face the agony of finishing second for the fourth straight season. Earlier, Virgil van Dijk scored a last-gasp winner in the Merseyside derby. Just a few weeks ago the battle for the top five, which guarantees entry into the Champions League, looked as though it might be tight. But fifth-placed Liverpool’s 2-1 victory in their first match at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium took them seven points clear of stumbling Chelsea, in sixth spot. Captain Van Dijk was the hero for Arne Slot’s Liverpool, heading Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner past a helpless Jordan Pickford in the 100th minute. Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring for last season’s champions, slotting home in the first half following a superbly-weighted pass from Cody Gakpo. The goal took the wind out of the sails of David Moyes’s team but they were level through Beto within 10 minutes of the restart. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, on the left of Everton’s forward line, fired across goal for Beto to attack and he poked home ahead of an onrushing Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was immedaiately stretchered off to be replaced by Freddie Woodman. The game looked destined to end in a draw but the officials signalled 11 added minutes and Van Dijk had the last laugh. Fourth-placed Aston Villa squandered a two-goal lead against Sunderland but scored in stoppage time to win 4-3. Ollie Watkins scored twice for Villa, who moved level on 58 points with third-placed Manchester United, three clear of Liverpool. Villa were in total control at 3-1 ahead but nearly threw it away as first Trai Hume and then Wilson Isidor scored within a minute of each other for Sunderland. But there was still time for Tammy Abraham to grab a dramatic late winner. At the other end of the table, Morgan Gibbs-White netted a hat-trick as struggling Nottingham Forest came from behind against Burnley to win 4-1 and heap the pressure on troubled Tottenham. Forest, involved in a relegation scrap with West Ham and Tottenham, are now five points clear of 18th-placed Spurs, with Wolves and Burnley almost certainly doomed. West Ham, a point above Spurs, travel to face Crystal Palace Monday. 

Bernardo Silva will leave Manchester City when his contract expires at the end of the season, the Premier League club announced Thursday as they hailed his “incalculable” contribution to our “greatest sustained period of success”. The 31-year-old Portuguese playmaker, who is the current club captain, joined City from Monaco for £43mn ($58mn) in 2017 and has gone on to make over 450 appearances for manager Pep Guardiola’s side, winning 15 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League as well as this season’s League Cup. He has also scored 76 goals and provided 77 assists to date, with Silva also involved as City won the ‘treble’ of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the 2022/23 season. Silva recently moved into the top 10 of all-time City appearance holders, overtaking several notable former players, including David Silva, Paul Power and Willie Donachie. “Manchester City can confirm Bernardo Silva will leave the club this summer,” said a City statement. “Bernardo will now focus on seeking to try and ensure his remaining time at City ends with even more silverware, with Pep Guardiola’s side still very much in the hunt to win both the Premier League title and the FA Cup. “In short, he will be deservedly remembered both as one of City’s finest and most popular players of all time.” Confirming his departure from the Etihad on his Instagram page, Silva wrote: “When I arrived nine years ago, I was following a dream of a little boy, wanting to succeed in life, wanting to achieve great things. “This city and this club gave me much more than that, much more than I ever hoped for. What we won and achieved together is a legacy that will forever be cherished in my heart. “The Centurions, the domestic quadruple, the Treble, the Four In A Row and much more... It wasn’t that bad. “In a few months, it’s time to say goodbye to the city where not only we won so much as a football club, but also where I started my marriage and my family. From the bottom of my heart, Ines and Carlota, thank you!” Silva, who thanked fans for their “unconditional support” and said he would leave the Etihad as a “Man City supporter for life”, added: “To the club, Pep, the staff and all my team-mates these nine years, thank you for all the memories and for letting me be a part of this journey for so long. “The atmosphere we created every day in the training ground made me feel at home and a part of a big family. Let’s enjoy together these last weeks and fight for what this season still brings us.”
