Erling Haaland fired 10-man Manchester City to a memorable 1-0 victory over Manchester United despite Phil Foden's first-half red card to extend a perfect start to Enzo Maresca's reign.Foden kicked out at United captain Bruno Fernandes on 23 minutes to give the visitors a mountain to climb. But a new-look City were up to the challenge as the near £250mn ($340mn) midfield pairing of Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez proved their worth.Haaland's winner was laced with controversy as Fernandez was deemed not to be interfering with play when he attempted to head in before the ball reached the Norwegian."It's worrying, if that's really how it is, if that's how the game is seen by those who are officiating it," said United boss Michael Carrick. "I just don't get it, I really don't get it, I can't understand them."Defeat compounds a miserable Premier League start for United as they are already eight points adrift of City and defending champions Arsenal. By contrast, victory was a huge statement for Maresca to quell fears of a major drop-off from City following Pep Guardiola's trophy-laden decade in charge."It's a kind of new experience to win with 10 men. It's amazing, I have to be honest," said Haaland.The visitors had made the better start in the opening quarter but looked to have been completely undone by Foden's ill discipline. City will argue that Fernandes should also have seen red as he fouled Foden and then seemed to kick him in the back.But there was little case for Foden's defence as he retaliated by throwing both legs up into Fernandes's midriff. "I think Foden's red card is a red card, but I also think that in the same action it's a red card for them," said Maresca.Marcus Rashford was inches away from his first United goal since December 2024 when his free-kick came crashing back off the post with the home side's best effort before the break. The woodwork came to City's rescue again just after half-time when Kobbie Mainoo curled onto the post from distance and the ball rebounded kindly into Gianluigi Donnarumma's grasp. But the City sucker punch arrived on the hour mark.Haaland adjusted his body brilliantly to sweep in Josko Gvardiol's deflected cross. A VAR review deemed Haaland was onside and that Fernandez was not interfering as he stooped to try and head in himself. City came close to landing the telling blow when Fernandez's effort was turned onto the post by Senne Lammens. Haaland also should have had a second when he got onto Fernandez's wicked low free-kick delivery.City, though, were not made to pay for failing to add a second as United lacked the composure and quality to make the man advantage count until the final minute of stoppage time. Fernandes's reverse ball perfectly picked out Bryan Mbeumo but he was denied by a fine save from Donnarumma. Maresca scampered down the touchline in delight at full-time.After a battle for the title went down to the final week of last season, Arsenal and City look a class apart from the competition once more. Both are locked on 12 points with Chelsea, Liverpool and United already cut adrift. Brighton run rampant against 10-man CoventryMeanwhile, Brighton thrashed 10-man Coventry 5-0 to move into fourth place and leave Frank Lampard's side rooted to the bottom of the table. Charalampos Kostoulas put Brighton ahead in the first half and Malick Yalcouye doubled their lead soon after the interval. Coventry striker Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for violent conduct in the second half.Pascal Gross netted from the penalty spot and Lewis Dunk curled home from long range. Yasin Ayari wrapped up Brighton's emphatic victory as Coventry's frustrated fans flooded to the exits well before the final whistle.Coventry are still looking for their first Premier League goal since 2001 after going scoreless while losing their first four top-flight matches this season. Lampard's men are the only Premier League team without a point this season. The Sky Blues were promoted from the Championship last season to end their 25-year exile from the Premier League. 

Michael Carrick insisted he would not blast his Manchester United's flops despite a dismal 2-0 defeat at Hull in their opening game of the Premier League season, while big-spending Tottenham slumped to an embarrassing 3-0 loss against Brentford.Carrick's side were rocked by first half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy at the MKM Stadium. Hull, who are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017, were without 10 players due to injury but still put woeful United to the sword with a vibrant display.It was a chastening start for United, who are expected to mount a title challenge after finishing third last term. There was scant evidence that United are capable of going toe to toe with champions Arsenal.But the stoic Carrick was determined to keep his composure to avoid the kind of emotional outburst that doomed his sacked predecessor Ruben Amorim last season. "We came here to win so to not take anything away is hugely disappointing. It is not a nice feeling but it is not going to change our direction as a team or a club," Carrick said. "You have to carry on as normal. We just don't all have to shout and scream and create some chaos. Calmness doesn't mean there is not emotion."Tottenham have splashed out over £200mn ($272mn) in a bid to improve a squad that narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship on the final day of last season. Roberto De Zerbi gave debuts to four of his new recruits as Sandro Tonali, Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke all started, while Mateus Fernandes came off the bench in the second half.But Brentford, assembled on a fraction of Tottenham's budget, ran riot in west London with a dynamic display that exposed the flaws in the visitors' costly rebuilding plan.Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt netted for Keith Andrews' side in the first half before Michael Kayode struck after the interval.It could have been even worse for Tottenham as Igor Thiago missed a penalty that would have put Brentford four up.Pierre Sage, Crystal Palace's new French manager, endured a miserable start in a 2-0 loss at Everton. Under Sage's predecessor Oliver Glasner, the Eagles won the FA Cup in 2025 and the UEFA Conference League last season.But Glasner left for Nottingham Forest in the close-season, with Sage hired after leading Lens to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and a French Cup triumph last season.Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall gave Everton the lead against the run of play in the 42nd minute, dispossessing Daniel Munoz before lashing a powerful shot into the far corner of Dean Henderson's net.Thierno Barry added to Sage's misery with a bullet header from Iliman Ndiaye's 53rd minute cross. Glasner's first game as Forest boss ended in a 1-0 defeat against Leeds at the City Ground.Anton Stach's 88th minute free-kick squirmed past Forest keeper Matz Sels to seal the points for Leeds, who face Glasner's men again in the League Cup second round on Tuesday.Ipswich marked their return to the Premier League with a dramatic 2-1 win against Sunderland at Portman Road. Emersonn put Ipswich ahead with a debut goal in the 24th minute before Nilson Angulo equalised in the 39th minute with a fine free-kick.Jack Clarke curled home in the 90th minute, giving Gary O'Neil a victory in his first game as Ipswich boss after replacing Kieran McKenna.Today, Manchester City start life without Pep Guardiola when new boss Enzo Maresca takes charge for the first time against Bournemouth.Liverpool, who parted with Egypt forward Mohamed Salah in the close-season, are also under new management as former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola prepares for his first match against Newcastle.Arsenal opened their title defence with an emphatic 3-0 win at home to promoted Coventry on Friday. 

Manchester United managed a creditable 1-1 draw with European champions Paris Saint-Germain in a Gothenburg friendly but the result was overshadowed by an injury to Mason Mount.The England midfielder, who joined United from Chelsea in 2023, has been hampered by injury problems since arriving at Old Trafford and he lasted less than 20 minutes on Saturday after starting against PSG.Mount, 27, appeared to suffer a foot injury in Sweden and, following discussions with coaches on the touchline, left the field to be replaced by Tyler Fletcher.Mount has been restricted to just 31 league appearances - many of them as a substitute - during his first two seasons with United, who will be competing in the 2026/27 Champions League alongside PSG next term after finishing third in the Premier League.United were 1-0 down to PSG at the time of Mount's injury, having gone behind in the second minute through an Ibrahim Mbaye goal even though the French giants were missing many of their star players.But Bryan Mbeumo equalised for United in the 32nd minute, with Amad Diallo playing him in after winning the ball back. There were more injury concerns for United early in the second half when their 40-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton suffered a right hamstring problem while rushing out to make a clearance.Mbeumo might have doubled his tally but for the fine form of PSG's Matvey Safonov. The goalkeeper, however, left the pitch to jeers after escaping punishment for clattering into Joshua Zirkzee way outside of his area – an incident that may well have seen him sanctioned in a competitive match.At the other end, there were late chances for Fletcher, Shea Lacey and captain Bruno Fernandes, who linked up well with new arrival Youri Tielemans in an encouraging sign for United manager Michael Carrick."I enjoyed it," Carrick said "Good challenge. Slightly different with the way they play. We should've scored more goals."The former United and England midfielder added: "The things we were trying to get out of the game, a lot of it was there. It's good for the boys sometimes to have to problem solve and find their own way and I thought we did that. That prepares them for the season as well. In that respect there were a lot of things that maybe people don't always see that we were quite happy with. There were some good signs there."United have two more friendly fixtures, against bitter rivals Leeds in Dublin on August 12 and AC Milan in the Polish city of Wroclaw three days later, before launching their Premier League campaign away to newly-promoted Hull on August 22. 

Enzo Maresca said he was "very happy" on Saturday after his first game in charge of Manchester City, despite a defeat on penalties to Inter Milan after the sides drew 1-1 in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong on Saturday.Matteo Lavelli netted the decisive spot-kick for a 3-1 shootout win for the Italian champions as Maresca led out City for the first time since taking over from legendary Pep Guardiola in June."I'm very happy with the performance," the former Chelsea and Leicester boss told reporters."Many positive things, including minutes for the legs, that's very important."Like always, there are things we can do better, but slowly, slowly, we're going to improve."An open first half saw the Premier League side take the lead in the 14th minute when Antoine Semenyo jinked towards the byline and crossed for youngster Divin Mubama to tuck in from a few yards out.Semenyo was a constant menace and almost scored a wonderful solo goal soon afterwards when he weaved through several Inter defenders but could not squeeze the ball past goalkeeper Josep Martinez.Within minutes Inter equalised when City failed to clear a Jamal Iddrissou cross and the ball fell for Benjamin Pavard to slot home from near the penalty spot.Both sides missed golden chances soon after the restart but the game drifted as the substitutions piled up.City's Vitor Reis sliced a shot against the crossbar while young winger Ryan McAidoo hit the post as the Manchester club pushed for a late winner that never came."We were pressing in the wrong way, we conceded some switches of play... because we were late in the pressing," Maresca said of the first half performance."At half-time we adjusted something, and I think, second half, in terms of pressing, we were much, much better."Maresca took over in June and faces a tough task to succeed Guardiola, who won 20 trophies in a glorious decade at City.Many clubs have struggled after the exit of serial title-winning managers, with local rivals Manchester United notably falling from the pinnacle of the English game after Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.Nearly 43,000 fans converged on Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium for the match, though patches of unsold seats left the atmosphere subdued at times.Several of City's World Cup stars, including Norway striker Erling Haaland and Spain captain Rodri, have not travelled.Maresca has confirmed the pair will not join the squad in Seoul for the two remaining games on the club's Asia tour, against a K League all-star team and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid next week.City face Arsenal in the Community Shield against Arsenal on August 16 before starting the new Premier League season at home to Bournemouth a week later.Inter round off pre-season with a derby against AC Milan followed by another all-Italian clash with Juventus in Perth, Australia, before launching their Serie A title defence against Monza on August 22.

Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov signed a five-year contract extension with the Premier League club on Saturday.Khusanov helped City win the FA Cup and League Cup last season, as well as finishing second in the Premier League.The 22-year-old centre-back joined City from French side Lens in January 2025.He has been capped 30 times for Uzbekistan and featured at the World Cup, playing in all three of their Group K matches."This is a great day for me and my family. I am really happy to extend my stay at City," Khusanov said."I've enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester and I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player."I have a new challenge now, which is to impress (new manager) Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that."Khusanov is the second City star to commit his long-term future to the club this week after England forward Phil Foden signed a new four-year deal.City's director of football Hugo Viana said: "We've been really pleased and impressed by Abdukodir's development since he arrived in England."We're seeing him grow into a brilliant young man and an outstanding defender - but we know this is only the beginning. His physical and technical abilities are top, he has all the assets needed to be a world-class centre-back."At just 22, his best years are all in front of him and his potential to get even better is clear for all to see." 

Manchester City forward Phil Foden gave a boost to new boss Enzo Maresca by signing a four-year contract extension on Wednesday.Foden's deal provides the England international with much-needed stability after a turbulent period.The 26-year-old had struggled for form during an injury-plagued period that included being left out of England's squad for the recent World Cup.He would have been out of contract at the end of the coming season, but his new deal, which contains an option for a further one-year extension, resolves his long-term future."Committing my future to City means everything to me. Playing for this club is all I've ever wanted to do and it's always an honour to wear the shirt," Foden said."It's not lost on me that I've been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we're always looking to the future and trying to win more."I can only thank the club, staff, team-mates and fans who continue to put their faith in me and trust that I give everything I can for City and I hope I'll be able to repay you for years to come."Foden has won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups and five League Cups with City since graduating from the club's youth academy.He is the most decorated player in City's history alongside Bernardo Silva and John Stones, who both left in the close-season.But a year ago, after struggling to replicate his form of previous campaigns, Foden opened up on his battles off the pitch with his mental health.Foden, who has 110 goals in 369 career appearances for City, started only seven of their last 26 games before boss Pep Guardiola resigned at the end of the season, with former Chelsea manager Maresca taking charge in June.Foden said he was looking forward to working with Maresca, who was part of Guardiola's coaching staff during the treble-winning campaign in 2022-23."So excited. Obviously, I've had Enzo before. When we had him in the treble season, he was brilliant," Foden said."His attention to detail, the small things that make a big difference, and even training with him at the moment, you can tell how good of a coach he is."The way he likes to play out from the back and play a lot of possession-based, it suits my game really well." 

Manchester City have signed teenage winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester on a five-year deal, the Premier League giants announced Saturday.Monga made his English top-flight debut for the Foxes aged just 15 and has joined City despite interest from other leading clubs.The 17-year-old played 37 times for Leicester and was also the youngest player to start a game for the club.No fee has been disclosed but Monga's move is reported to be worth £10mn ($13mn) with add-ons on a contract which will take him through to 2031.Monga becomes the third English player to join Manchester City during the current transfer window, as new manager Enzo Maresca looks to refreshthe squad, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Pierce Charles and club-record signing Elliot Anderson.Monga featured for the first time in the top flight as a second-half substitute in Leicester's 3-0 defeat by Newcastle in April 2025 under Ruud van Nistelrooy and made his first start in the League Cup against Huddersfield in August 2025.The England under-19 international is also the third-youngest player to feature in the Premier League behind Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman."When I became aware that Manchester City were interested, I knew instantly this was the right choice for me," Monga told his new club's website."For any young footballer, to become part of this amazing club is a dream come true. This has been the best club in England over the past 10 years."And it has also handed opportunities to players from the academy like Phil Foden and Nico O'Reilly which shows that the pathway is there."It is a privilege to be here and I'm delighted to have joined." 

Manchester City on Monday hired former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca to lead the club into a new era after Pep Guardiola stepped down at the end of last season.Maresca agreed a three-year contract with City after being forced to wait several weeks to seal his move to the Etihad Stadium."Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me," said Maresca, who previously coached Leicester in the Championship and Chelsea in the Premier League."City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively."The 46-year-old Maresca had been strongly linked with the City job once reports emerged of Guardiola's potential exit.But Maresca's arrival in Manchester was held up by Chelsea's demand for a reported £17mn ($22mn) compensation package for the Italian, who was still contracted to the Blues until 2029 when he departed in January.Chelsea took the unusual step of issuing a statement, on the announcement of Maresca's appointment, to explain he had informed them earlier in the season "there might be an opportunity for him to succeed Pep Guardiola at the end of the season"."In December 2025, our head coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position," the club added."Obviously, we felt let down." Premier League glory Maresca will be tasked with restoring City to the summit of English football after two years without the Premier League title.He has experience of life at City after spending the 2022-23 season as one of Guardiola's assistants, helping them win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble.The former Juventus and West Brom midfielder also coached City's elite development squad to the 'Premier League 2' title in 2020-21.Maresca added: "This will be my third spell here. I know this club, I know the demands and I know the expectations."The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special, and I want to thank them for showing faith in my ability."I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City." Detail orientated  Maresca is back in management after leaving Chelsea under a cloud on New Year's Day.His spell at Chelsea started promisingly as the Blues finished fourth in the Premier League and won the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup in his first season.The intensely driven and detail oriented Maresca had a good relationship with Chelsea players and Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella, who has since joined Real Madrid, both expressed frustration at his departure.Maresca, who joined Chelsea after leading Leicester to promotion from the Championship in 2023-24, is a disciple of Guardiola, using the Spaniard's possession-based philosophy as the template for his own style of play.Replicating Guardiola's success will be a daunting task for Maresca, who will find a squad that had been significantly overhauled over the last 18 months as the club moved on from several of the pillars of their dynastic title-winning era.After months of speculation over his future, Guardiola quit in May, bringing the curtain down on an iconic decade in charge of City.He won the FA Cup and League Cup in his final season, but second-placed City finished seven points behind Premier League champions Arsenal.It was the second successive year that City had failed to win the Premier League after Guardiola led them to the title in six of his first eight seasons in England.The 55-year-old Spaniard, who lifted 17 major trophies with City, said he no longer had the energy to lead the club after 10 years in Manchester.City hope Maresca can emulate Arsenal's success with Mikel Arteta, another of Guardiola's former assistants.Maresca will look to make a big splash in the transfer market to herald his arrival.City have reportedly agreed a club record deal with Nottingham Forest for England midfielder Elliot Anderson, whilst they are also reported to be chasing Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi.
