Kimi Antonelli moved a mighty step closer to the Formula One title on Sunday after winning the first Spanish Grand Prix held at Madrid's new circuit with a slice of luck on the side. The 20-year-old Italian's Madring victory, his eighth win of the season, stretched his championship lead to 81 points after 14 rounds.Antonelli benefited from a well-timed virtual safety car (VSC) and calamitous McLaren pitstop on lap 16 of 57 that robbed pole-sitter and early leader Lando Norris of a likely win on a track where overtaking proved almost impossible."I think today it's good to win but it doesn't feel as good because I think Lando today deserved the win but overall, we take it," said Antonelli. Red Bull's Max Verstappen was second with Norris third. Antonelli now has 292 points to closest rival and teammate George Russell, who finished fifth, on 211."There was nothing I could do... just luck not on our side," said Norris. "I felt like we deserved it today but that's racing sometimes. I feel like I drove a perfect race today, just luck wasn't with me." OPENING BATTLE FOR POSITIONAntonelli twice had to give the lead back to Norris on the opening lap after going off and gaining advantage in a battle through the opening corners but the Briton then settled into a rhythm and began to pull away. Verstappen also gained a place that he had to hand back to Antonelli and lost and gained position to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who then suffered a brake problem that eventually forced the seven-time world champion to retire.Norris was more than six seconds clear with everything seemingly under control when Aston Martin's Lance Stroll triggered the VSC by stopping on track on lap 14. Antonelli, Verstappen and Russell all came in for a cheap pitstop but Norris was unable to do so, having already gone past the entry point, and by the time he came around again the VSC had ended.McLaren called him in anyway on lap 16 for a switch to hard tyres but he was stopped for seven seconds and returned to the track in fifth place but effectively fourth with new leader Charles Leclerc, who ended up fourth for Ferrari, yet to stop. That proved the defining moment, with the remainder of the afternoon effectively a high-speed procession to the chequered flag without major incident -- despite fears that there could be multiple crashes and red flags as seen in earlier junior races.Antonelli crossed the line 4.3 seconds clear of Verstappen with Norris a further 0.7 behind. Liam Lawson was sixth for Red Bull with Franco Colapinto seventh for Renault-owned Alpine and Mclaren's Oscar Piastri eighth. Arvid Lindblad secured precious points for Racing Bulls in their battle for fifth with Alpine and Audi's Nico Hulkenberg was the final scorer in 10th. 

Formula Two driver Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak escaped unhurt after his car burst into flames during practice on Friday when he crashed into a safety barrier, underlining driver fears about the safety of the new Madring circuit which will host its first Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.The driver, who spun before hitting the barriers at Turn 19, emerged uninjured from the accident and managed to climb out of his cockpit on his own, even though the rear of his car was already on fire.The session was halted for around half an hour to allow time to clean the track and repair the safety barrier that had absorbed the impact.It follows last month's testing by F3 drivers which saw 19 red flags across two days, albeit not all of them were for crashes, and concerns from Formula One drivers ahead of Sunday's race."When I heard about the 20 red flags in Formula 3, I was a bit surprised," said Mercedes's George Russell on Thursday."But when I then drove the circuit in the simulator, I was actually more surprised that there were only 20 red flags. It's a mad circuit."I'd even go so far as to say it's the riskiest track on the entire calendar."Madring has 22 corners and features blind turns and an impressive banked corner of up to 24 degrees called 'La Monumental'."I'll put my money on a red flag," said Alpine's Pierre Gasly.The semi-permanent circuit winds around Ifema, Madrid's exhibition centre, and is located to the north of the city, near Real Madrid's training complex and Barajas Airport.F1 drivers will get a first taste of the circuit during the opening free practice session later Friday. 

Formula One drivers are expecting a weekend of crashes and chaos at the new Circuito de Madring as it hosts the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time."I'll put my money on a red flag," said Alpine's Pierre Gasly, who won his maiden pole position at last weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Monza. "That's for sure."Like most drivers, the Frenchman took a considered stroll on Thursday around the 5.416-km hybrid track built at a cost of more than 83mn euros ($96mn).His team-mate Franco Colapinto said he was looking forward to trying it in his car in Friday's practice, but warned that "this track is going to be extremely difficult for all the drivers - in the simulator, putting together one complete lap could take me hours".He added: "It has a bit of everything. If you took all you find at the 24 races on the calendar and mixed it up, you'd probably get something like this."Cadillac's Sergio Perez, a 36-year-old veteran of 294 Grands Prix, said: "It's scary!"It reminds me of Jeddah - a good, fast and proper track. I'm really happy to be here, and I think the atmosphere here is going to be one of the best."The Mexican said he expected it to be an unforgiving circuit with low grip offering no room for error. The circuit hosted a filming day with Ferrari in action on a very hot day in July, before the building work was completed, and held a Formula Three event in August that saw three cars wrecked and 19 red flag interruptions.
