France captain Kylian Mbappe was in Paris Monday for treatment on a knee injury but no surgery is planned, the Real Madrid superstar's entourage said.Mbappe was "in Paris accompanied by members of the Real Madrid medical staff," the striker's camp said in a statement. "In agreement with the club, he is undergoing further tests on his knee," it continued, "with the aim of optimising his follow-up care and preparing for his comeback. No surgical intervention is being planned at the moment."Mbappe has been struggling with an injury to the external ligament of his left knee since the end of 2025 and missed last week's Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica due to "persistent pain" in training, sources close to the player said.His entourage insisted there was no disagreement regarding the treatment required by the player between his club and the French national team, who will be desperate to have Mbappe fully fit for the upcoming World Cup."It was a bit of a consensus between everyone (Mbappe, the coach and the doctors), and we think the best thing is that he stops, that he recovers and comes back at 100 percent," Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said late last week. "It's not going to be a question of days, it will be a bit longer, but I can't say how long, hopefully not too long."It remains to be seen if Mbappe, who has scored 38 goals in 33 appearances for his club this season, will be able to play in the Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City, the first leg of which is scheduled for March 11 with the return on March 17.France have two friendly matches lined up in the United States at the end of the month, against Brazil in Boston on March 26 and Colombia in Washington three days later. Their first World Cup game is on June 16 against Senegal. 

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni said his team’s 2-1 win against Benfica on Wednesday to reach the Champions League last 16 was a victory for “everyone who is against racism”. The Frenchman was referring to the first leg of the play-off tie, which Madrid won 1-0 last week, which was marred by alleged racial abuse aimed at Vinicius Junior by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni. “We didn’t play our best match of the season, that’s for sure. But I think there are things more important than this match, and more important than football,” Tchouameni told reporters. Vinicius scored Madrid’s second goal at the Santiago Bernabeu and Tchouameni said the result was a “victory for everyone who is against racism”. Prestianni was provisionally suspended by UEFA for the game while the incident is under investigation and Benfica had an appeal against his ban rejected earlier Wednesday. “The dance continues,” wrote Vinicius on social media afterwards, along with a photo of a big banner hung at the Bernabeu reading “no to racism”. Real Madrid said they had thrown out one of their own supporters before the game for performing a Nazi salute. “This (club) member was identified by the club’s security staff moments after appearing on the (television) broadcast and was immediately expelled from the Santiago Bernabeu stadium,” said Madrid in a statement. “Real Madrid condemns this type of gesture and expression that incites violence and hatred in sports and society.” Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said he was happy when Vinicius found the net. “(I reacted) with joy obviously, for the great goal he scored, and because it was him, he deserves it,” said Arbeloa. “Without (Kylian) Mbappe I think it’s even more important and I am very happy for him.” Before the game Arbeloa said French superstar Mbappe would spent some time out as he recovers from a knee problem. “After yesterday’s session, we talked with the doctors, I spoke with him, and we felt the best thing was for him to stop, to recover 100 percent, and to come back in top shape, confident and without any discomfort for everything that’s coming, which is obviously very important,” Arbeloa told reporters after the match. Asked if it was discomfort or an injury, he added: “I think we can call it an injury, but it seems, and I hope, that it’s not a very serious injury, nothing major, and that he’ll be able to come back in a few days or weeks.” 

French superstar Kylian Mbappe may have to put his season on hold because of a knee problem, with his main goals fast coming into view – a first major trophy with Real Madrid, and a second World Cup triumph.Little more than 100 days from the start of the 2026 World Cup, the France captain seems to be paying the price for efforts he has made to carry his team this season. According to several sources contacted by AFP, Mbappe, hampered by damage to the outer ligament of his left knee since late 2025, had to withdraw from Madrid's squad to face Benfica in the Champions League play-off round last night because he felt "pain that was too persistent" in training.Mbappe is expected to rest for at least 10 days so he can recover from the issue which has troubled him over the past couple of months. His absence for one of the most important matches of the season, confirmed by Madrid, is a concern for Los Blancos, who lost at Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday to allow Barcelona back in front in the title race.Beyond a personal quest for glory, having finished his first season at Madrid without a major trophy, the intense pressure and demand for results at the Santiago Bernabeu have contributed to Mbappe playing through the pain in recent weeks. "It's important to highlight the immense effort Kylian is making and the fact that he's trying to help us out on the patch," said Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa on Tuesday.Mbappe flew to Saudi Arabia in January to appear in the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona as a substitute, having missed the semi-final because of knee pain, but his team fell to defeat.It is hard to imagine where the Spanish giants would be without their No 10's supreme finishing ability, as Mbappe has netted 38 goals in 33 matches this season across all competitions. At least winger Vinicius Junior has finally hit top form after a slow start to the season and could pick up some of the slack, along with promising young striker Gonzalo Garcia, who Madrid fans are keen to see more of.Mbappe is top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League, even in a dysfunctional Madrid side that sacked coach Xabi Alonso in January. If they are knocked out by Jose Mourinho's Benfica on Wednesday, a result that would trigger a fresh crisis, Madrid might be tempted to push their striker to play to salvage their season.Should they progress then Mbappe will be eyeing the round of 16 clash against Manchester City or Sporting Lisbon, with the first leg set for March 10 or 11. The next international break (March 23-30), when France face Brazil and Colombia in the United States, would come at the perfect time to give him another breather – but could trigger a new club-versus-country conflict.France are counting on their captain, a source close to the national team said, adding that Mbappe is in "regular contact" with coach Didier Deschamps.Deschamps is due to announce his squad list for the USA trip on March 19, with the tour including promotional events with American sportswear company Nike, who outfit both the French national team and Mbappe. 

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa called on European football governing body UEFA to make their fight against racism into more than just a slogan after the alleged abuse of star Vinicius Junior.UEFA provisionally suspended Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni for today's Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid after Vinicius accused him of racial abuse in the first leg last week. If UEFA find Prestianni, who argued with the Brazilian while holding his shirt over his mouth, abused Vinicius at the end of their investigation into the incident he will be suspended for a minimum of 10 matches."We have a great opportunity to mark a turning point in the fight against racism," Arbeloa told reporters. "UEFA, which has always been and has led this fight against racism, now has the chance not to leave it at just a slogan, at just a nice banner before matches, and I hope that they seize this opportunity."Vinicius scored a brilliant goal in the first leg, enabling Real Madrid to claim a 1-0 victory, before the alleged abuse led to the game being stopped for around 10 minutes. Arbeloa said he believed Vinicius will thrive on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu as the record 15-time champions bid to reach the last 16."Vinicius Junior has always shown a lot of bravery and a lot of character," said Arbeloa. "That is always his response, it always has been and I think it always will be. He is a fighter and I'm sure tomorrow he will go out to fight and have a great game, and keep showing he's one of the best players on the planet."Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois backed the 25-year-old winger, despite Prestianni and Benfica insisting there was no racial abuse. "(Benfica) are going to believe what their player says and we are 100 percent behind Vini, because Vini has fought thousands of battles on the pitch with defenders, there have been lots of clashes with players and he has never said something like this (happened)," Courtois told reporters."As (Prestianni) covered his mouth with his shirt, we can never know, and I think in the end Benfica will defend their player. There's not much more we can do and then it's up to UEFA and the institutions to decide what they want to decide."The Belgian stopper said he disagreed with Benfica coach Jose Mourinho's words after the game, with the veteran Portuguese manager attacking Vinicius for what he deemed a disrespectful celebration. "At the end of the day Mourinho is Mourinho. As a coach you're always, I think, going to defend your club and what your player has told you," said Courtois. "The only thing that disappoints me a bit is using Vini's celebration, I don't think Vini did anything wrong there... I don't think we can justify alleged racism because of a celebration."Vinicius has been abused by opposition supporters on numerous occasions since arriving at Real Madrid. Video footage showed some Benfica fans making monkey gestures at the attacker last week. "I think we have to be less stupid as a society," added Courtois.Benfica have appealed against Prestianni's provisional one match ban to try and make him available to face Madrid. "Prestianni is being labelled a racist person, and I can assure you he is anything but racist," Benfica president Rui Costa told reporters.The 20-year-old Argentine travelled to Madrid with his team-mates in case Benfica win their appeal. "UEFA has the decision in their hands, it made a decision, the club appealed, and we, as coaches, obviously have to prepare for every scenario, and that's one of them," said Joao Tralhao, one of Mourinho's assistants.Former Real Madrid coach Mourinho will not be able to lead his team from the dug-out back at the Santiago Bernabeu because he was sent off for protesting towards the end of the first leg."Obviously he is our leader, and a leader is always missed, his presence is always missed," added Tralhao, standing in for the Portuguese veteran. "(However) even though Jose Mourinho cannot be in the technical area, he is with us." 

Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 victory over Levante to reclaim pole position in La Liga Sunday.After Real Madrid fell to a 2-1 defeat at Osasuna on Saturday, Hansi Flick's side moved a point clear of their bitter rivals with a comfortable victory at Camp Nou against the team in 19th.Marc Bernal and Frenkie de Jong gave Barca a commanding first-half lead and Fermin Lopez wrapped up the win with a sensational drive late on.Barcelona were glad to get back to winning ways after a 4-0 thrashing by Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg last week and then a 2-1 defeat by Girona on Monday in La Liga."It was a really bad moment for us but in the end today we gave a good response," Flick told reporters."It's important now to be on top of the table but in the end there's a long way to go."Despite Flick's calls for improvement in defence, Barca were as open as ever, although Levante's poor finishing meant they could not capitalise.Bernal sent Barca ahead after good work by Joao Cancelo, who impressed on a rare start after his arrival on loan in January, and Eric Garcia.It was Bernal's second goal since returning from a long-term knee injury, which kept the 18-year-old out of action for over a year."I thought of my father (in my celebration) and my physio - he told me I would score and he has helped me a lot in this process," Bernal told Movistar.Veteran Polish forward Robert Lewandowski could have doubled Barca's advantage but fired into the ground and over the bar when well placed.Cancelo hit the post with a cross aimed at Lewandowski, before the Portuguese defender carved out the second for De Jong with a similar ball in from the left.De Jong delivered the finishing touch to give Barca a two-goal lead at the break."Joao today he showed his strength, his positive things, he gave us a lot of moments, great chances, for me it was a really good game from him and this is what I want to see," said Flick.Lopez rocketGarcia should have expanded Barcelona's advantage early in the second half but nodded wide from Jules Kounde's tempting cross.Eventually substitute Lopez got a spectacular third, rattling home a long-range effort in off the post.The midfielder might have added a fourth late on but Levante goalkeeper Mathew Ryan denied him with an excellent reflex save, after first thwarting Raphinha.Flick was able to bring back midfielder Pedri as a substitute after a month out with a hamstring injury, with the Spaniard likely to be key in the testing weeks ahead.Defeat leaves Levante seven points from safety."In the first half we had some chances that, if we put them away, could have got them to doubt themselves," said Levante midfielder Carlos Alvarez."If we'd have gone in front, who knows what could have happened."Earlier Sevilla earned a 1-0 win at Getafe, while third-placed Villarreal host Valencia later on. 

Benfica coach Jose Mourinho insisted he is capable of saying no to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez as he played down rumours of a return to the Spanish giants.Mourinho's Benfica host Real Madrid in a Champions League play-off round clash today, before the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu next week. The 63-year-old Portuguese coach, who led Madrid between 2010-2013, has a clause in his contract with Benfica which would allow him to depart the club, fuelling rumours Perez may turn to him again next season.Mourinho guided Benfica to a 4-2 victory over Alvaro Arbeloa's Real Madrid in the league phase of the Champions League in January, leading both teams to face each other again in the two-legged play-off round. "Can you say no? Yes," Mourinho told reporters when asked if he could reject an approach from the Madrid chief. "Yes you can."Mourinho admitted he has a "great friendship" with Perez and a permanent connection with Madrid, but said the break clause was agreed because of the Benfica presidential elections which were approaching in November 2025, a few weeks after he signed his contract. "I gave everything to Real Madrid, everything that I had, I did good things, I did bad things, but I gave absolutely everything and that's all," said Mourinho."When (someone) leaves a club with those type of feelings, I think a connection always exists... the fans think highly of me, and that is fantastic, but with this I don't want to encourage stories that don't exist... The only thing that exists is that I have another year on my contract with Benfica. It's a special contract because it was signed in an electoral period."Mourinho said the deal was signed to protect a hypothetical new president, although in the end Rui Costa was re-elected. "There is a clause that is very easy for both me and Benfica to break the contract, but the only thing that exists is the contract with Benfica, and there is nothing with Real Madrid," said Mourinho."I would very much like to eliminate Real Madrid (from the Champions League), but I would like Alvaro to win La Liga and for Alvaro to stay at Madrid for many years. I think he's a coach with a lot of capability and a boy who has Madrid within him, and with the personality to coach Madrid, which isn't something anyone can do."Mourinho said he expected a different game to the one his side dominated in Lisbon against Madrid in January, and highlighted the power of Arbeloa's side, record 15-time champions. "The Real Madrid I expect tomorrow is the Real Madrid who are number one favourites to win the Champions League," added Mourinho.Arbeloa said despite his good relationship with Mourinho he was determined to reach the last 16. "My objective is to eliminate Benfica, and after that he can win everything else, after that I wish him the best," explained Arbeloa.The coach would not reveal whether French superstar Kylian Mbappe was ready to start the game, after knee discomfort kept him on the bench last weekend in the win over Real Sociedad. "Kylian came with us, he will train and tomorrow you will see if he plays or doesn't," said Arbeloa.Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga said Los Blancos were out for revenge at the Estadio da Luz. "I think we have to change our mentality (from the league phase game), we're better on that front now, we have to attack and defend together," Camavinga told reporters. "We want to play a great game, because losing a game like that was tough for our fans... we want to win tomorrow with the spirit of revenge."

Real Madrid are aiming to seal direct passage to the Champions League last 16 at Benfica Wednesday, but standing in their way is their divisive former coach Jose Mourinho.The veteran Portuguese still has slim hopes of taking Benfica into the play-off round, needing victory and other results to go their way, but pride alone is enough of a reward as he takes on Alvaro Arbeloa's 15-time European champions.Mourinho never won the Champions League with Madrid, coaching the club between 2010 and 2013, a period in which rivals Barcelona had the upper hand both at home and on the continent.His opposite number at the Estadio da Luz is a former disciple of his in ex-Madrid defender Arbeloa, one of his most loyal foot soldiers during his reign. However, their strong prior relationship has not stopped the oft-antagonistic Mourinho from taking an apparent dig at him ahead of the match."For me, it's a surprise when coaches with no history get the opportunity to manage the most important clubs in the world," said Mourinho last week, interpreted as commentary on Arbeloa's appointment to replace Xabi Alonso earlier in January.Arbeloa had been coaching Madrid's reserve team, with Los Blancos his debut first team job. He responded with grace to Mourinho's words. "You all know what Mourinho means to me. If a coach like that speaks, especially him, I listen and analyse it," said the 43-year-old Spaniard.In his first press conference as Madrid coach, Arbeloa said he carries Mourinho "within him" and that it was an "honour and a privilege" to have worked under the Portuguese. Arbeloa said he would try to be himself rather than an imitation of the 63-year-old. "While it's true I am not afraid of failing, and have never been, I'm sure that if I tried to be Jose Mourinho, I would fail spectacularly," he explained.Madrid crashed out of the Copa del Rey at second-tier Albacete in Arbeloa's first match at the helm but have won the following three games, including a 6-1 demolition of Monaco. Sitting third in the league phase table, victory would ensure Madrid progressed to the last 16, avoiding the play-off round, and gaining second-leg home advantage.Madrid moved on after Mourinho but some of his hallmarks have returned, particularly in recent years as the club regularly rail against officiating in Spain. Mourinho's siege mentality has been embraced by club president Florentino Perez, and Arbeloa's appointment means some aspects of the Portuguese's game returning too.The now-Benfica boss advocated for a counter-attacking Madrid and Arbeloa says he would be foolish not to utilise that strategy. "I cannot go against what is natural for the players, the opposite -- I have to try and take advantage of it," said Arbeloa after Madrid beat Villarreal on Saturday.Mourinho, a rare coach admired by Perez, has only faced Real Madrid once since leaving the club in 2013. While coaching Manchester United in 2017 he fell to a 2-1 defeat by Madrid in the European Super Cup final in Macedonia.In the first few years after leaving Madrid he was occasionally linked with a return, although Perez never pulled the trigger on it, seemingly aware of the negative effects it could have. Mourinho stoked the rivalry between Madrid and Barcelona to unprecedented heights in the modern game, controversially poking then Barca assistant Tito Vilanova in eye during a brawl following a Spanish Super Cup defeat in 2011.There were also fractures in the Madrid dressing room under the pressure of Mourinho's approach and demands. Since his heyday at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, which led him to Madrid, Mourinho's career has taken a turn for the worse.He won the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017 during a difficult spell there, before modest stints at Tottenham, Roma and Fenerbahce.Benfica appointed him in September, hoping he could turn things around, but several defeats in the Champions League have left them facing an early European exit.Domestically Benfica sit third, some way behind leaders Porto, who knocked them out of the Portuguese Cup earlier in January, with fans left furious.Amid the problems Mourinho has, Madrid's visit to Lisbon is an invitation for him to reassert some dominance, albeit for one night only, before a club which has never forgotten him. 

Barcelona reclaimed top spot in La Liga with a 3-0 win over Real Oviedo Sunday, thanks to goals from Dani Olmo, Raphinha and an acrobatic Lamine Yamal effort.After Real Madrid beat Villarreal on Saturday to take pole position overnight, the Catalans edged a point ahead again.Although Oviedo are bottom of the table with just two victories all season, Barca had to scrap for their victory as the visitors worked hard defensively to keep Hansi Flick's team at bay until the second half.Eventually the hosts' quality told at the partially-reopened Camp Nou and after Olmo opened the scoring Barca never looked back.The pick of the goals was Yamal's strike, an impressive volley from Olmo's cross to secure Barca's triumph."I know we didn't play on our highest level in the first half... but the team has done a fantastic job in the last few weeks, months," Flick told DAZN.The coach praised Yamal for his hard work in terms of pressing and also hailed his fine strike."It was great... I'm happy that he scored such a (good) goal, and the third goal for us was really important," added Flick.Barca struggled to make inroads in a dry first half and their passing was unusually imprecise.Injured midfield maestro Pedri Gonzalez watched on from the stands with an unimpressed expression.Oviedo sought to attack on the counter and Haissem Hassan drew a save from Joan Garcia from long distance.At the other end, Aaron Escandell made a fine stop at his near post to thwart Raphinha before half-time.Barca came out with renewed energy for the second half and soon took the lead.After Yamal and Raphinha pressed in the box the ball broke loose to Olmo, who steered home.Oviedo gave away a poor second goal after 57 minutes, with Raphinha running on to an undercooked back-pass from David Costas and lofting the ball over Escandell.Barcelona's third was expertly taken by Yamal, as Olmo's cross was falling behind him he produced an eye-catching sideways scissor-kick to wrap up the victory.A huge downpour hit the stadium, sending fans scurrying as there is no roof yet, and those who remained saw Escandell deny Robert Lewandowski a potential fourth with a fine save."I think we were not at our best in the first half, (but) in the second we could score the goals and that is the most important thing," said Raphinha.
