Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said Friday that Cristiano Ronaldo's international retirement does not signal the end of his playing career, insisting there was more to come from the Portuguese superstar.Ronaldo, who played under Mourinho for three years at Madrid, announced on Thursday that he had played his final match for Portugal after a world-record 234 appearances and 146 goals."It's not a retirement, his career hasn't ended. Anyone who knows him knows he still has goals for his career," Mourinho said ahead of his team's match at Valencia."The only thing I would hope for is that when the day finally comes for him to retire as a footballer, it happens differently than it did yesterday."Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, fell out with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus at the end of September after he refused to play the forward in a Nations League match.The 41-year-old immediately left the team camp and was handed a 30-day suspension, a sad end to his international career which included winning Euro 2016.Ronaldo will continue to play for his current club in Saudi Arabia, Al-Nassr, where he is under contract until June 2027. 

Real Madrid are set to add a champion from another sporting arena to their boardroom, with 22-times tennis Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal's appointment as a director to be put to members for ratification, the club said on Wednesday.The board agreed at its November 4 meeting to submit the appointment to the General Assembly of Delegated Members. Nadal is already an honorary member of the club."It is a source of immense pride for Real Madrid and for all our supporters that a figure of his sporting and personal stature ... is to join our Board of Directors," Real said in a statement.The club highlighted Nadal's sporting achievements, including 92 tour singles titles, two Olympic gold medals, five Davis Cup triumphs with Spain and the world number one ranking.Real said his qualities beyond those honours - including humility, respect for opponents and commitment to charity - also reflected the club's identity."All these values form part of Real Madrid's identity, and Rafael Nadal has embodied and championed them throughout his sporting career," the statement said.Nadal welcomed the invitation."I would like to thank President Florentino Perez and the Board for inviting me to join the Board of Directors of Real Madrid," he wrote on social media."I have accepted this invitation with great enthusiasm, keen to learn and to contribute as much as I can."Nadal, who retired from tennis in November 2024, has long been touted as a potential successor to Real president Florentino Perez, although he has played down the prospect.Perez, 79, secured another four-year term in June after Real's first contested presidential election in two decades.More than a third of voting members backed challenger Enrique Riquelme, who opposed plans to bring outside investment into the member-owned club. 

Federico Valverde lashed home a stunning effort from distance to snatch Real Madrid a late 3-2 victory at AEK Athens in the Champions League and preserve their 100 percent start.Jose Mourinho's side twice came from behind against the Greek champions before Valverde claimed all three points for his side, level with holders Paris Saint-Germain on four wins from four league phase games.Aboubakary Koita sent AEK ahead after 12 minutes and Jude Bellingham equalised with a sublime flick for the record 15-time winners. Stavros Pilios sent the Greek champions ahead with 15 minutes to go but Kylian Mbappe swiftly pulled Madrid level once again, setting the stage for Valverde's late winner.Madrid have now won seven straight games across all competitions.Mourinho started with Vinicius Junior on the left flank, after he missed the team's previous two matches through suspension, in La Liga. The hosts started with huge energy at the Agia Sophia stadium and it was not overly surprising when they took an early lead.Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved well from former Los Blancos striker Luka Jovic before Koita sent AEK ahead. The Mauritanian winger shifted cleverly inside Marc Cucurella and thumped home at the near post, catching out Courtois.However they inevitably began to tire and Madrid began to take the reins in the Greek capital. Kylian Mbappe fired over and Bellingham netted from close range but was shown to be offside. Moments later the England international scored again and nobody could deny him this one.Cucurella fired in a low cross and Bellingham produced a brilliant flicked finish to beat goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli. Former Chelsea defender Cucurella tested Brignoli and Bernardo Silva nodded off-target before the interval as Mourinho's team controlled the game.AEK reclaimed the lead in the 75th minute when the impressive Koita gently nudged the ball into Pilios's path and the Albania international finished through Courtois's legs from close range.Madrid immediately responded with Bellingham playing Denzel Dumfries in down the right. The Netherlands defender rolled a low ball across the six-yard box and this time Mbappe was able to finish. It was Mbappe's fourth goal in four Champions League games this season, netting once in each, and his 16th across all competitions.Madrid substitute Endrick sent Mbappe through on goal with five minutes remaining but Brignoli produced a sensational save to tip his strike against the crossbar. Valverde refused to give up on the three points and in the 92nd minute he lashed home across Brignoli to keep Madrid perfect. Liverpool collapse to defeat at FenerbahceDirk Kuyt got the better of his former club Liverpool as Fenerbahce twice came from behind for a famous 3-2 win in Istanbul that breathed new life into their Champions League campaign.Liverpool had won their opening three European games under Andoni Iraola, but were punished for sloppy defending in a surprise defeat. Trey Nyoni and substitute Alexander Isak twice put the visitors in front.But Liverpool, who lost twice away to Galatasaray last season, were beaten again in Istanbul as Englishmen Mason Greenwood and Archie Brown levelled before Vedat Muriqi's winner.Fenerbahce's interim boss Kuyt, who spent six years at Anfield as a player, was taking charge for just the second time after Ismail Kartal quit last week. The Turkish giants had taken just two points from their opening three Champions League games but made the most of Liverpool's generosity at the back.Liverpool's perfect Champions League start allowed Iraola the luxury of leaving out Isak and Florian Wirtz among five changes from Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Arsenal. Defeat cost Liverpool the chance to move level with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Champions League table as they sit. Victory moves Fenerbahce move up to 19th in the 36-team table. 

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho said on Saturday that the club and Kylian Mbappe had responded appropriately by apologising for the France captain referring to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong as a dictator.Real Madrid, Mbappe and LaLiga apologised this week following the remarks, while league president Javier Tebas established a crisis unit and met Chinese ambassador Yao Jing on Wednesday as Spanish football sought to contain the fallout.Chinese state media outlet China Daily said Mbappe's remark had "triggered a backlash among his Chinese fans, threatened his lucrative commercial relationships and offered a sharp reminder of the limits of celebrity influence".China's state-owned broadcaster Migu is not showing Real Madrid's game at Racing Santander on Sunday and Chinese brands including dairy companies Mengniu and Shanghai Milkground Food Tech plus Eastroc Beverage ceased all cooperation with Mbappe.The backlash highlights the risks for athletes and brands in the lucrative Chinese market, where satire about Mao, modern China's founding leader who governed the country from 1949 until his death in 1976, remains a social taboo."These are the dangers of today's world, where many times the best thing you can do is not open your mouth. Because there is risk in so many things you say or comment on," Mourinho told reporters ahead of Sunday's match."But I have also seen him (Mbappe) act very responsibly with a club that, at this regard, is of great class. As far as we're concerned, that's it. We have nothing more to say."Both Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappe had the class to react immediately, and I feel, as manager, very well represented by both of them."The controversy stems from a long-running joke surrounding 27-year-old Mbappe's influence at club level.In a video on a French podcast that has since been taken down, Mbappe is heard discussing a humorous meme where his face had been photoshopped on to that of "some guy - I think he's a Chinese dictator".Fans have previously created memes superimposing Mbappe's face on images of military and political leaders to suggest he has the power to influence decisions at the teams he plays for. Mbappe has been nicknamed "the dictator" in the European press.Real Madrid are third in the La Liga standings, four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid. 

Spain's biggest football fixture arrives on Sunday night at Camp Nou with as many as 14 new faces that could make their Clasico debuts, but the return of Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho to the fixture will attract the most attention of all.Real Madrid and Barcelona both made six signings in the close season, while the Catalan club have promoted two youth academy products to their senior squad, injecting the tie with a fresh crop of players keen to leave their mark on the rivalry.Among them is Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus, who joined Barcelona from Arsenal in September."Barcelona against Real Madrid is, without a doubt, amongst the biggest in the world," Jesus told Reuters on Thursday ahead of the first meeting between the two sides this season."It really is a dream to play in the Clasico for the first time. I've never made a secret of my desire to one day wear the Barcelona shirt and that goal includes playing in El Clasico."Jesus is no stranger to facing Real Madrid, having scored three times against Los Blancos in four matches for Manchester City."They were memorable Champions League clashes, including a goal at the Bernabeu," he said.The 29-year-old Jesus grew up 8,797km away in Sao Paulo, and he could line up alongside Xavi Espart, who was born in Barcelona and came through their youth academy. One of nine academy graduates in their squad, Espart highlighted the implications of the match both in the standings and in the rivalry."The truth is, it’s going to be a war. We will go all out, it’s a Clasico," Espart told DAZN."You always have to give 100 percent, now we have the chance to extend our lead and we'll fight to the death."Victory for Barcelona would extend the gap in LaLiga between the two teams to nine points, a sizable margin to overcome. Should Real come away with a win, it would not only halve the current six-point gap, but provide a much-needed confidence boost for a side that has lost six of the last seven Clasicos. MOURINHO'S RETURNAt the other end of the experience scale to Espart is Mourinho. The 63-year-old is a veteran of 27 matches against Barcelona and 17 Clasicos on the Real bench.Real Madrid President Florentino Perez first appointed Mourinho as manager in 2010 to compete with Pep Guardiola's Barcelona, and he will hope the Portuguese can wrest the LaLiga title back to the Bernabeu for a second time.Mourinho's first spell at Real coincided with arguably the most heated encounters in the modern history of El Clasico, and there will be numerous cameras trained on his every move at Camp Nou on Sunday.The Portuguese manager won just once in his first 10 Clasicos, but went unbeaten in his final five games against Barcelona, recording three victories.Recovering the winning formula against Barcelona may well represent a turning point in Mourinho's second Real Madrid tenure, after two losses in their opening nine LaLiga games and frequent whistles from their own fans during home games. 

Real Madrid demanded the resignation of LaLiga President Javier Tebas on Friday after he compared rhetoric from the club's management to the propaganda methods used by the Nazi Party in Germany.Tebas wrote earlier on Friday on social media that "Real Madrid’s management directs an orchestra of mouthpieces and Real Madrid TV leads the singing."The LaLiga president was responding to articles by two journalists saying he and LaLiga were acting against Real's interests.Tebas added that the authors in the El Debate newspaper were amplifying a message on behalf of Real's management.Reuters has asked El Debate for comment.Real Madrid's demand for Tebas to immediately resign deepens a feud between the club and La Liga's chief.Real in September called for a new LaLiga president in response to Tebas calling their complaints about refereeing decisions 'a smokescreen' for their shortcomings on the pitch.Tebas on Friday criticised Real Madrid TV's coverage of officiating at their matches."Their score is always the same: select the plays that suit them, repeat the grievance, feed the suspicion, and point fingers at the enemies," he wrote."That method recalls propaganda mechanisms used by Goebbels, Nazi Germany's Minister of Propaganda."The comparison is with those propaganda techniques, not with an ideology or, of course, with the Madridista fanbase," added LaLiga's president. REAL DEMAND TEBAS RESIGNATIONReal Madrid released a statement later on Friday demanding that Tebas resign from his positions as LaLiga chief and vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.The statement called it "intolerable and extraordinarily serious" that Tebas used "a comparison with the propaganda methods of the Nazi regime to discredit our club, its management and its television."Tebas' repeated conduct demonstrates a lack of neutrality, respect and impartiality incompatible with his institutional responsibilities," said Real."It is unacceptable that he even takes advantage of questions, information or opinions from journalists unrelated to the club to direct his accusations at us, attributing to us actions of third parties for which we bear no responsibility."The 64-year-old Tebas, who is elected by the 42 professional clubs in Spain's top two tiers, has been LaLiga president since 2013. In 2023, he was reelected unopposed until 2027.Real Madrid's statement came hours after LaLiga confirmed that they are one of the six clubs that will sit on the league's Executive Committee this season. 

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior will miss the upcoming Clasico in La Liga against Barcelona after being issued a four-match suspension following his red card for hair-pulling against Villarreal last week.The Spanish football federation's disciplinary committee confirmed the Brazilian will be banned for several matches including the visit to face league leaders Barca on October 25 for both the red card and his subsequent protests.The committee said Vinicius had been suspended for two games for "behaving violently... (while) not being in a position to challenge for the ball" and a further two matches for "protests" to the officials.As well as the Clasico, Vinicius will be unavailable to face Sevilla (October 18), Racing Santander (November 1) and Valencia (November 7) in La Liga.Despite Vinicius's red card against Villarreal, Jose Mourinho's fourth-place Madrid earned a 1-0 win to stay six points behind Barcelona.The 26-year-old winger reacted angrily to the decision, made after a VAR review, which also chalked off a goal he had scored in the aftermath of his pull on Nathan Saliba's hair.Vinicius had to be held back by his team-mates as he remonstrated with referee Isidro Diaz de Mera.Mourinho, also upset by the officiating, refused to participate in his post-match press conference.Vinicius apologised to his teammates and Madrid supporters after the match. "I am sorry to the team and the fans," he wrote on social media.The attacker has endured a difficult start to the campaign, scoring just once in nine appearances, and was dropped to the bench against Villarreal, with his red card occurring around 20 minutes after he was introduced as a substitute.Madrid's visit to Camp Nou will be Mourinho's first Clasico since returning as coach of Los Blancos this summer.Thus far Hansi Flick's Barcelona, back-to-back Spanish champions, boast a perfect record of 10 wins from 10 matches this season across all competitions. 

Despite enduring a torrid start to the season, Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr can still make a difference even when he is off his game and will return to his best form in time, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday.Forward Vinicius has scored just one goal in eight appearances across all competitions this season for Spanish club Real Madrid, who sit fourth in the LaLiga standings with 15 points.However, the 26-year-old showed flashes of his quality in Brazil's 4-2 friendly victory over Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday, contributing to the third goal and converting a penalty for the fourth."I know Vini very well. To me, he is a key player for the national team - a key player for Brazil - and he was a key player in my own footballing journey," said Ancelotti, who also coached Vinicius when he was in charge of Real Madrid."He is a key player for the future. Is he at his best right now? No, he isn't, but it is the start of the season. And Vini, always, even when he isn't at his best, he can still make the difference, just as he did today."The goal that really opened up the game was thanks to him. So, I'm going to be very patient, because he deserves that patience."Brazil next travel to Kolkata for a friendly with India on Saturday. 

Jude Bellingham has been named England men's player of the year for a second successive season after a standout campaign in which he scored a record seven goals at the 2026 World Cup, the Football Association said on Friday.The 23-year-old Real Madrid midfielder's World Cup tally set a record for an England men's player at a major tournament as the Three Lions secured their best finish at the competition since 1966 by finishing third."It feels great," Bellingham said. "It's a huge honour to be recognised by the fans again. So not something you think about when you’re playing for your country, but it's obviously a beautiful little addition to the great summer we had, and the honour of playing for my country."The award was decided by supporters voting on the official England app.Bellingham's World Cup tally included doubles in the thrilling round-of-16 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium and in the quarter-final win over Norway in Miami.He also became the youngest European player to feature at four major tournaments.England manager Thomas Tuchel said Bellingham was "one of the players of the tournament, not only for us but of the whole tournament.""He lived up to his full potential; you could just see what a competitor and what a machine he is," Tuchel said. "He just thrives under pressure, he just loves these moments, he loves these stages and it brings out the very best in him."Captain Harry Kane was England's top scorer for a seventh consecutive season after netting 12 goals across all national team competitions, matching his best tally for England.Kane called the achievement a "showcase of consistency" and thanked his teammates and coaches for their support.  

Columbus Crew sacked Argentine reserve team coach Federico Higuain for telling a female referee "Don't forget this is a man's game" while refusing to release her from a handshake, the Major League Soccer club said Tuesday.Higuain, the brother of former Argentina and Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain, had already received a red card and a two-match suspension for the incident before the team dismissed him."We determined it's in the best interest of our Club, players and support staff to dismiss Federico Higuaín from his responsibilities," said Columbus Crew general manager Issa Tall."After conversations this week and further assessing the past month, our Club's standards of what's expected from a leader for one of our teams have not been met."Higuain during follow-up talks with the club was "unwilling to reflect or take accountability for his actions, nor did he offer a public apology," the Athletic reported, citing anonymous club sources.The incident occurred during a game in MLS's developmental MLS NEXT Pro league.According to the referees' union, Higuain "committed two deliberate acts of physical abuse and sexism against a female official -- squeezing her hand and refusing to let go after being told to stop three times."This physical intimidation was compounded by a demeaning, sexist remark to the official: 'Don't forget, this is a man's game,'" said the Professional Soccer Referees Association.The union criticized the league's initial two-game suspension as falling "drastically short," and called for at least a six-game suspension."Women make every level of this game better. They should not have to endure intimidation or degrading comments to prove it," it said in a statement."Our female officials have proven their excellence on the world stage. They deserve the same respect, dignity, and safe working environment as every other official."  

Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde suffered an ankle injury in his team's weekend derby loss to Atletico Madrid, the club confirmed Tuesday.The Uruguay midfielder was hurt by a tackle from Atletico's Lee Kang-in, which Real have insisted should have resulted in a sending off for the South Korean.According to Spanish press reports, Valverde will be sidelined for several weeks and will miss Uruguay's upcoming friendlies against Japan, South Korea and India."After the tests carried out today on our player Fede Valverde by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with a grade 3 sprain in his left ankle," the La Liga giants said in a short statement. Real coach Jose Mourinho arrived at his post-match press conference following Sunday's 2-1 loss with printed screen-shots of two tackles he felt should have resulted in red cards for Atletico players, including Lee's on Valverde. 

Kylian Mbappe says being managed by Zinedine Zidane for the French national team is "like something out of a movie". The pair will work together for the first time during this international break, as Zidane returns to management five years after leaving Real Madrid.Last week Mbappe referred to Zidane as "the player who most embodies the France team", noting that he left an indelible mark on French football. Mbappe is a key figure for the current generation of French footballers, having led Les Bleus to their second World Cup in 2018, and helping them back to the final in 2022. Zidane confirmed last week that Mbappe would continue as France captain.Speaking to Spanish paper AS, Mbappe explained that Zidane was present in his career from his formative years."Yes, years ago (he took me to Real Madrid's training ground)," said Mbappe. "He was the first, to pick me up and take me to Real Madrid, to the training complex. I was 13 or 14, it was ages ago.""And now he’s my national team coach. It’s like something out of a movie, but he's top-level."Zidane replaced his former France teammate Didier Deschamps after the World Cup, ending a 14-year spell in charge for the latter."It’s a new phase with a new coach," said Mbappe. "It’s going to be a new experience for everyone, since we’ve only ever had Deschamps. It will be a change for us, but I think everything will turn out very well."France face Turkey in the Nations League on Friday in Zidane's debut as France manager, before fixtures against Belgium and Italy.
