Qatar Airways has more than 20 specialised workshops in Doha to maintain its fleet and support other technical aspects of its aircraft, according to the airline’s latest statistics. Qatar Airways also disclosed that 10 wide-body aircraft exteriors will be painted in Doha by this December, and over 150 aircraft are equipped with Starlink. Qatar Airways is the operator of the world’s first and largest Starlink-equipped wide-body fleet. Moreover, 30 Boeing 787-9 aircraft will be equipped with Starlink by the year-end. During a media tour of the carrier’s Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility on Wednesday, officials explained how these workshops support the airline’s smooth operations and the specialised work carried out there. Ali AlSaadi, chief MRO officer, told Gulf Times that the facility was set up when Hamad International Airport became operational. According to AlSaadi, Qatar Airways maintains its own aircraft in-house, from routine checks to full structural overhauls, backed by more than 20 specialised workshops in Doha covering everything from avionics to cabin interiors. “To ensure Qatar Airways traffic becomes smooth, we work hand-in-hand with multiple units, warehouses, technical facilities, and so on. We all share the same vision to ensure that we get the aircraft fine and fit,” said AlSaadi. The official said everything is done behind the scenes to ensure customers have the best experience. He explained: “What we do here is basically maintenance, repair, and to an extent, overhaul of Qatar Airways engines. We support the plan of the national carrier to upgrade its facilities. Part of our focus, over the past several years, has been to focus on Qatar Vision 2030 and include all the initiatives to bring in true value for the country and focus on capabilities, and increasing our output to meet the growing demand.” In addition, the airline has about 80 spare engines in the facility to back up the fleet. AlSaadi said the spare engines are sufficient to meet any eventuality and fulfil the fleet’s needs. He also highlighted that it is one of the biggest engine facilities in the world. The MRO unit’s in-house capabilities include several technical aspects, such as maintenance inspections to ensure the fleet remains safe, reliable, and ready to operate throughout peak travel periods. Other capabilities include structural inspections, aircraft modifications, component overhaul and repair, avionics maintenance, and cabin interior and seat refurbishment. Meanwhile, Capt Clifford Chetcuti, the chief flight operations and CAMO (Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation) officer, said that the Integrated Operations Centre (IOC), the operational nerve centre of Qatar Airways, brings together specialists, technology, and real-time data to monitor and manage the airline’s global network around the clock. “The IOC continuously re-routes flights, re-plans schedules, and re-briefs the crew to keep the network resilient to whatever is happening beyond Qatar’s borders,” said Capt Chetcuti. The same real-time co-ordination underpins winter planning and positions aircraft, crew, and ground teams ahead of seasonal weather at destinations across the network. The officials also added that the airline’s Ground Services has enhanced staffing, optimised operational resources, deployed additional mobile kiosks, and activated extra check-in facilities to support growing passenger demand during the winter travel season.
