St. Louis rookie Joshua Baez smacked three home runs, the most ever by any player in his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut, as the Cardinals beat the host Chicago Cubs 8-4 on Saturday.The 23-year-old Dominican-American right-fielder made a debut for the ages at historic Wrigley Field, the oldest National League ballpark dating to 1914.Baez smashed the first pitch he saw in MLB, a 93.4-mph fastball from Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd, for a two-run homer into center field that gave St. Louis a 3-0 lead.In his second time at bat, Baez blasted a changeup pitch for a solo homer down the left field line in the fourth inning to lift the Cardinals ahead 4-3.That made Baez only the ninth player in MLB history with two homers in his regular-season debut, and just the second since 1900 to homer on his first two MLB at bats after Bob Nieman in 1951.And Baez was not yet done.In the sixth inning, Baez homered again off Boyd for a 6-3 St. Louis lead to put himself alone in MLB history.Baez flew out to left field in the eighth inning but finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three homers and five runs batted in during his first MLB contest.Baez was set to play Friday for Memphis, the Cardinals' top developmental club, when he was told he was going to the top club."It was kind of like a shocking moment, just because you don't know when it's going to happen," Baez said.Baez recalled his late father, Jose Manuel, who died in 2023."His dream was to play in the big leagues," Baez said. "The only promise that I made to him was that I was going to be able to do that for him."He's not here with us, but he's here in spirit, and I know he's so proud of me." 

Kyle Schwarber smashed two home runs and the Philadelphia Phillies ripped the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on Thursday in Major League Baseball's "Field of Dreams" game.Schwarber belted a homer in the first inning and another in the fourth, giving him an MLB-best 37 homers for the season to spark Philadelphia's triumph at Dyersville, Iowa.An 8,000-seat ballpark was constructed near the cornfield used as a film location for the 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner, prompting MLB to return following games at the cinematic landmark in 2021 and 2022.The Phillies improved to 65-58 and moved out of a tie with Arizona into the last National League wildcard playoff position with just over six weeks remaining in the campaign.The Twins fell to 60-63, a game behind Detroit in the fight for the last American League wildcard playoff berth.Schwarber blasted a homer to open the contest and the Phillies made it 2-0 when Bryce Harper walked, took third on a Luis Arraez single and scored on a Bryson Stott single.Minnesota's Luke Keaschall answered with a solo homer in the second inning.Schwarber, however, smashed a two-run blast in the fourth and the Phillies went ahead 5-1 when Trea Turner doubled and scored on a Harper single.Brandon Marsh added a two-run homer in the seventh for the Phillies. 

Mike Trout went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and George Klassen gave up two runs on five hits over six innings to pick up his first major ‌league victory as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the ​Texas Rangers 5-2 ‌on Wednesday night in Anaheim, California.Jose Siri had a ‌game-tying pinch-hit ⁠double and ‌scored the go-ahead run on ‌a squeeze play for Los Angeles, which defeated Texas for ⁠the fifth time in six games at Angel Stadium this season.Klassen (1-1), making his fourth career big league start, walked one, hit a batter and struck out five. Ben Joyce, who hit 103.4 mph on the radar gun with a fastball, struck out one during a 1-2-3 ninth ​to pick up his first save.Corey Seager homered, doubled and singled for Texas, which finished with just seven hits. Robby Ahlstrom (3-1) took ‌his first big-league loss ⁠in relief, allowing three ​runs on two hits in one-third of an ​inning.Texas took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, loading the bases with two outs on back-to-back singles by Evan Carter and Elias Diaz followed by Nicky Lopez getting hit by a pitch. Joc Pederson then walked to force in Carter.The Rangers extended the lead to 2-0 in the third inning when Seager led off with his 12th home run, a towering ‌378-foot drive to right.Los ‌Angeles cut the deficit ⁠to 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Denzer Guzman ⁠led off with ⁠a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Trout.The Angels scored three times in the sixth inning off Ahlstrom to take a 4-2 lead. Siri drove in the first run with a pinch-hit, line-drive ​to double to the fence in left-center, then stole third and scored on Guzman's squeeze bunt, just beating a flip home by pitcher Peyton Gray.One out later, Trout added an RBI single, driving in Oswald Peraza, who had been hit by a pitch.Los Angeles added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Zach Neto and Moises Ballesteros walked to ‌open the ​inning. Adam Frazier singled off the first base bag with two outs to plate Neto.
