Britain is “on course” to chalk up its warmest summer on record for the second year running, the UK’s Met Office weather agency said Tuesday as the country braced for its fifth heatwave of the season. “The UK is on course to record its warmest summer on record for mean temperature, with only average conditions needed for the remainder of August to surpass the record set only last year,” the Met Office said in a statement. Britain last year sweltered through its hottest summer on record with a mean temperature of 16.10C, surpassing the previous record of 15.76C set in 2018. The current average temperature for the summer, from June 1 to August 10, was already at 16.48C, the Met said. “Another record-breaking summer now looks increasingly likely for the UK, following the second-warmest June, and second-warmest July on record and yet another heatwave imminent,” said Met senior scientist Mike Kendon said. “These statistics are a clear reminder — if one were needed — of the stark changes that we are seeing in the UK’s climate.” High temperatures and low rainfall in swathes of the country, which is built for more temperate weather, have also plunged almost three-quarters of England and all of Wales into drought. England and Wales also experienced their driest July on record this year. Scientists say climate change is making extreme weather events like heatwaves and droughts more intense, and resulting in records tumbling more frequently. Heatwaves and record temperatures in May and June disrupted schools, transport and hospitals, leading to an estimated 2,877 excess deaths in England — almost double the total of the whole of summer 2025. 

Strong northwesterly winds and blowing dust reduced visibility across Qatar Sunday afternoon and evening, affecting traffic on several major roads, particularly in Doha, according to the Qatar Meteorology Department (MET).In a post on X, MET said strong winds accompanied by poor horizontal visibility were recorded between 3pm and 9pm, as a dust mass moved across parts of the country. Motorists were urged to exercise caution as dusty conditions hampered driving and visibility on key thoroughfares.**media[409146]**Earlier in the day, MET reported light rain in some areas at dawn, reflecting the unsettled weather typical of January, often the coldest month of the year in Qatar.The department’s Climate Summary for January notes that the month is characterised by occasional outbreaks of rain associated with thunderstorms, prevailing northwesterly winds, and the lowest mean monthly sea temperatures of the year.By late morning, MET warned that satellite images showed another dust mass approaching the country, with some areas expected to be affected in the coming hours. The advisory, issued at 11:26am on X, highlighted the likelihood of reduced visibility and continued windy conditions.**media[409148]**Temperatures across the country remained relatively low for this time of year. MET data showed that Dukhan recorded a minimum temperature of 15.9°C Sunday, while Al Guwayriyah dropped to 15.4°C. Al Karanaa reported a low of 15.8°C, placing these areas among the coldest locations in Qatar on January 25.Weather conditions are expected to remain variable during the winter season, with MET continuing to monitor dust activity and wind patterns. Residents are advised to follow official updates, limit outdoor activities during dusty periods, and take precautions while driving, especially during times of reduced visibility.**media[409149]**According to MET, weather conditions inshore until 6am Monday are expected to be dusty and partly cloudy to cloudy, with a chance of scattered rain in some areas and cold conditions prevailing. The department warned of strong winds and poor horizontal visibility in places.Offshore, conditions will be dusty and cloudy to partly cloudy, with a chance of scattered rain, which may be thundery at times, particularly early in the period, MET said.Inshore winds will be predominantly northwesterly, blowing at 15 to 25 knots and gusting up to 33 knots at times. Offshore, northwesterly winds are forecast at 20 to 30 knots, with gusts reaching up to 37 knots.Sea conditions are expected to be moderate to rough, with wave heights ranging from 3 to 5 feet inshore. Offshore seas will be higher, between 6 and 10 feet, surging to around 12 feet at times.Visibility inshore is forecast to range between 4 and 9km, dropping to 2km or less at times. Offshore visibility will range from 5 to 9km , and may fall to around 3km or less during periods of dust and reduced conditions. 

A sharp winter chill has swept across Qatar, sending nighttime temperatures in Doha down to 11°C and making it feel as cold as between 5°C and 8°C due to strong winds, prompting many residents to bundle up and take extra precautions even as daytime conditions remain inviting.According to the Department of Meteorology (MET), the cooler spell is expected to continue over the coming days, with generally stable weather and no significant rain forecast.Temperatures Thursday are set to reach 19°C during the day before dropping to 12°C at night. Winds may gust to 30 mph, while the chance of rainfall remains low at 5%. Despite the mild temperatures, MET has flagged high ultraviolet (UV) levels, advising the public to seek shade during midday hours, wear protective clothing, and apply sunscreen.Similar conditions will prevail through the weekend and into early next week. Friday’s forecast mirrors Thursday at 19°C during the day and 13°C at night. Saturday will see a slight warming trend, with temperatures rising to 21°C during the day and 17°C in the evening. Sunday is expected to be the warmest day of the period, with a high of 22°C and a low of 15°C.Temperatures are forecast to dip again on Monday, reaching 20°C during the day and 13°C at night, with stronger winds gusting to 31 mph. On Tuesday, daytime temperatures will climb back to 22°C, with a low of 14°C. Humidity levels are also expected to rise, peaking at around 86% during the day, which may add to the chill in the air despite the sunshine.While the colder nights have caught some off guard, the overall weather remains pleasant by local standards. Many residents are expected to make the most of the winter climate by heading to popular outdoor destinations such as Al Bidda Park, Aspire Zone, the Doha Corniche, and traditional souqs, among other popular outdoor places such as Katara Cultural Village. These areas are likely to see increased activity, particularly in the afternoons and over the weekend, as families and fitness enthusiasts gather for picnics, recreation, and outdoor sports under clear winter skies.
