Narratives increasingly being shaped by algorithms: experts

Algorithms are increasingly shaping the content people consume, influencing how information is received and helping form public narratives, speakers at a Ministry of Culture seminar have said, stressing the need for greater digital awareness and critical thinking in an era of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence (AI). The seminar, titled “The Power of Algorithms in Shaping Narratives and Programming Minds”, was held at the Ministry of Culture’s headquarters as part of the fifth edition of its “Seminar Season”, organised in partnership with the Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies, Hamad Bin Khalifa University and Lusail University. The event was attended by Assistant Undersecretary for Cultural Affairs Mubarak Abdullah al-Khalifa, along with several ambassadors and officials. It examined the growing influence of algorithms amid the rapid adoption of digital technologies and AI, particularly their role in determining what content reaches users and shaping how audiences receive and interact with information. Dr Abdulrahman al-Harmi, an educational and academic consultant, and Mohammed Salem, a media trainer and consultant, discussed how algorithms work and their growing impact on content creation, narrative formation, and how information and ideas reach the public. Al-Harmi said algorithms have become an increasingly important subject of discussion as digital technologies permeate virtually every aspect of daily life. They are no longer technical tools behind digital platforms, he said, but systems that directly shape the content users see and how people interact with information and ideas. Al-Harmi stressed that understanding how algorithms work is essential to strengthening digital literacy, particularly amid the growing diversity of information sources and the vast volume of content circulating online. Users, he added, should engage consciously with the content presented to them rather than automatically accepting what appears on their screens, emphasising the need for verification, critical thinking and analysis. Al-Harmi also highlighted education’s role in helping society navigate these changes, particularly by developing critical-thinking skills among younger generations and equipping them to understand the digital environments in which they live and learn. He said that this would enable them to benefit from technological advances while staying aware of the challenges tied to the growing influence of digital platforms and algorithms. Salem said that algorithms have become a major force in the media and digital landscape because they rank content and determine what users see. This, he said, makes their influence on narrative formation an increasingly important topic of discussion, especially as people rely more on digital platforms for news and information. He said the content-creation industry is rapidly transforming due to technological advances, requiring media and cultural professionals to keep pace with emerging tools and understand how they are changing content production and distribution. Salem stressed the importance of understanding how content is created, ranked, circulated, and disseminated, and the need to handle information shared across platforms responsibly. The seminar also examined the relationship between algorithms and narrative formation, focusing on the growing role of digital platforms in producing and distributing content and the challenges this poses for users trying to distinguish factual information from targeted or algorithmically selected content. Participants also discussed the importance of understanding how algorithmic systems operate and how they can influence individual choices, perceptions and interactions with different issues. Through its “Seminar Season”, the Ministry of Culture continues to address a range of contemporary cultural, intellectual, and knowledge-based issues, providing a platform to discuss developments shaping society. This version avoids repeating the same point about algorithms “shaping content” in several paragraphs. It gave al-Harmi and Salem distinct angles: digital literacy and education for al-Harmi, and media/content production for Salem.

Lusail face Shahania, aim to extend impressive start to season

Lusail Sports Club is looking to continue its strong start to the season when they meet Al Shahania in the Qatar Stars League (QSL) at the Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday. Under the guidance of Portuguese head coach Emanuel Mesquita, Lusail has successfully avoided the typical struggles of a newly promoted side and established themselves comfortably in the mid-table tier early on.Mesquita’s side has proven to be a tough opponent, securing one win, two draws, and one loss and are in sixth in the table. Playing in the top-flight league has provided a valuable learning experience for the team, according to Mesquita, who believes the opportunity to compete against the country’s best sides is helping his players develop both individually and collectively. Mesquita described the experience as a positive one, stressing that his players are enjoying the challenge while remaining focused on continuous improvement. “It’s a very, very good experience. For us, it’s a pleasure to be here. We are very happy to have the chance to play with the best teams in the country. For us, it’s been a very good learning process, and we are happy with what we have been doing so far,” Mesquita said during a pre-match press conference. With plenty of matches still to play, the Portuguese coach said the team’s priority is to continue improving while making the most of the experience. “There’s a long way ahead, and we just try to improve every day and enjoy the process,” the 42-year-old coach added. Mesquita also highlighted the importance of maintaining the right mentality and intensity required to compete at a higher level. He attributed the team’s progress largely to the commitment and discipline shown by the players in training, insisting that hard work remains the foundation of their approach. “The main secret is the work, the hard work that these boys put in every day and the serious way that we take every day. We take all days in a very serious way,” he said. According to Mesquita, that commitment began from the first day of the team’s camp and will continue until the final day of the league, with the players fully aware of the responsibility that comes with representing the club. “From the first day of the camp until the last day of the league, we will be very serious and have a responsible feeling that we are carrying this badge on our chest and representing a club that was supposed to be the underdog, the team with fewer chances,” he said. Despite the team’s encouraging progress, Mesquita was quick to caution against complacency, emphasizing that there is still a long road ahead. “It’s still a long way ahead to the end of the season, so we cannot slow down,” he stressed. Mesquita stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in the upcoming matches. “Lusail's goal for the upcoming match is to maintain the excellent performance shown in previous games and to capitalize on the positive momentum within the squad following the good results achieved in earlier rounds,” he said. On preparations for the Al Shahania match, the Portuguese coach added: “Preparations this week have gone very well. The international break was beneficial for refining certain details, especially since the team also enjoyed a very good rest period.” “We know that Al Shahania is a very good team, and the match will be a major challenge for both sides. We hope to continue achieving positive results; that is always our goal - to secure as many points as possible.” Lusail has also carried strong form into the QSL Cup as they have defeated Al Markhiya 1-0 and drew against Al Waab 1–1. “In my opinion, the QSL Cup is a very good tournament; it was a great opportunity to give players who hadn't featured much the playing time they deserve. For me as a coach, this tournament is very interesting,” Mesquita said, while praising the QSL Cup. Lusail defender Abdul Hadi also confirmed the squad’s readiness for the next round matches: “After the break, we certainly focused on regaining our physical and technical sharpness. Training sessions were very intense, and we strove to be in peak condition for the league's resumption. Thankfully, we are ready and aim to put in a strong performance and achieve a positive result.” “The QSL Cup matches helped us significantly by maintaining our physical fitness and focus, while also keeping us in a competitive match mindset. We have great confidence, especially given the tremendous effort put in by the coaching staff and the players. God willing, we will maintain this level and achieve positive results with the Lusail Club.”

Japanese pop culture becomes bridge for Qatar-Japan cultural exchange

Japanese popular culture is finding a growing place in Qatar, with Geekend’s Japan-Qatar Illustration Contest turning creative expression into a bridge between communities, artists and cultures across both countries today.The second edition of the illustration contest was among the highlights of Geekend 2026, which brought Qatar’s gaming, art and pop-culture communities together at the Geekdom Building on Lusail Boulevard from October 1-3.The contest, organised by the embassy of Japan, Geekdom and Nakama, invited residents of Qatar of all ages to create an original hero or heroine combining the spirit, legends and visual cultures of Japan and Qatar.Entries were judged on originality, artistic skill and “cultural synergy”.Speaking to *Gulf Times at the event, Japan’s ambassador to Qatar Naoto Hisajima said he was impressed by the response from participants and creators.“Today we just held the award ceremony of this second illustration contest and I myself was impressed and overwhelmed by the heat and enthusiasm of all participants and artists and creators gathering here today,” he said.For the envoy, the significance of the contest extended beyond the artwork itself, reflecting the way Japanese cultural influences have become part of everyday cultural life in Qatar.“I’m very glad to see this Japanese culture so much a part of the life of many people here in Qatar,” Hisajima said, adding that he hoped the connection would continue to grow.He said greater engagement with Japanese culture could contribute to stronger ties between the two countries and their people.“That will definitely lead to the better understanding, even better, between Japan and Qatar, between the two countries and between the two peoples,” he said.The Japan-Qatar contest formed part of a wider Japanese cultural presence at Geekend.The embassy also presented cosplay photography, a kimono experience and traditional Japanese activities, giving visitors opportunities to engage with Japanese culture beyond anime and illustration.Hisajima said the contest was one of several cultural initiatives supported by the embassy.“This is one of the big cultural events that the Japanese embassy organises,” he said, noting that the embassy also facilitates other cultural events and people-to-people exchanges.He encouraged audiences to follow the embassy’s website and social media channels for announcements about upcoming activities.Geekend itself placed artists and creators at the centre of its 2026 programme, alongside gaming, board games, workshops, live entertainment, a creator market and community activities.The Japan-Qatar contest added a distinctive cultural dimension, bringing two visual traditions together through the work of local participants.As sketches and illustrations became a meeting point for Japanese and Qatari influences, the contest showed how creative spaces can open informal avenues for cultural exchange and people-to-people understanding.
