Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique admitted that his side still had considerable room for improvement after they edged past Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday to set up a last-16 showdown against Barcelona or Chelsea. “We had the toughest draw in the league phase, and we are used to playing games like these against anyone,” the Spaniard said after Wednesday’s 2-2 draw in the all-French knockout phase play-off tie that allowed PSG to squeeze through 5-4 on aggregate. PSG led 3-2 from last week’s first leg but Maghnes Akliouche gave Monaco the advantage on the night at the Parc des Princes to level the scores on aggregate. The sending-off of Monaco’s Mamadou Coulibaly early in the second half paved the way for PSG to equalise through Marquinhos and then go 2-1 up in the second leg through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. But with a man fewer, the principality team still scored again through Jordan Teze and Wout Faes missed a glorious chance to force extra time. “Of course we can and want to improve, but there is also always an opponent and we knew how difficult it would be,” said Enrique. “The next one will be easier, no? Chelsea or Barca – not bad. But if any team is ready, it is us.” PSG lead Ligue 1 and remain in the running to retain the Champions League title they won for the first time last season. They have also won the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the French Champions Trophy in this campaign – all on penalties. There is a sense that the Qatar-owned club are a long way short of the form they showed in the second half of last season when they blew away their continental rivals on the way to thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final in Munich. “We knew how difficult it would be and we were not surprised by Monaco,” Enrique added. “We showed our resilience and our ability to overcome problems, but this competition is difficult. It is important to improve and that is what we will try to do.” He will also hope to get last year’s Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele back fully fit – the 28-year-old scored 35 goals last season but has just 11 this season and has started only 14 games out of 38. PSG will find out on Friday their path to this season’s final in Budapest, beyond the identity of their opponents in next month’s last 16. They beat Barcelona 2-1 away during the league phase in October and have faced the Catalans in five knockout ties since 2013. Paris also played Chelsea in knockout ties in three straight seasons from 2014 to 2016 and lost to the Blues 3-0 in last year’s Club World Cup final. Asked how his team can get back to the levels of last year, Enrique said: “Just keep doing the same things. We are ready to play any opponents in any competition. We have had a lot of injuries, but that is not an excuse. There are still more or less three months of the season to go and we have the same mentality. The objective is to win every competition.” Meanwhile, Monaco are left to focus on trying to qualify for Europe again next season after being knocked out in the Champions League play-offs for the second year running. “We could have done more in this campaign but it has still been satisfying,” said Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli, whose side are eighth in Ligue 1. “Let’s hope this experience helps us progress more quickly in the future.” 

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said his side will focus on winning rather than protecting their lead when they host AS Monaco in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off at the Parc des Princes tonight.PSG hold a slender advantage from the first leg, having won 3-2 last week. But Enrique stressed that the mindset must remain proactive on a night when one team’s European campaign will come to an end.“One team is going into it eliminated (as it stands), and one team will be eliminated at full time,” he said. “We’ll need to manage the game’s big moments. That will be difficult, but we want to keep going in the Champions League.”Monaco are expected to press from the outset as they attempt to overturn the deficit, and Enrique acknowledged his players must be prepared for difficult spells.“It’ll be tricky because Monaco will be starting the game a goal down, so we need to know that there’ll be tough moments,” he said. “The best way of doing that is to play as we normally do, to try to hold onto the ball and to press in the same way when we don’t have the ball. We’re out not to defend a result but to win a game.”Forward Desire Doue underlined the squad’s readiness, saying: “We trained well this morning, and we’re ready to put in a big performance. Champions League matches are always difficult as they can come down to a single goal, but we know that we’ll have the support of our fans.”The tie remains finely balanced after a dramatic first leg at the Stade Louis II. Folarin Balogun scored twice inside 18 minutes to give Monaco a flying start, while PSG suffered further setbacks as Vitinha missed a penalty and Ousmane Dembélé went off injured.Doue sparked the turnaround, pulling one back and setting up Achraf Hakimi for the equaliser before halftime. Monaco were reduced to 10 men when Aleksandr Golovin was sent off early in the second half, and Doue struck again on 67 minutes to seal a 3-2 comeback.Enrique has called on his side to approach the return leg “like it’s the first leg” as PSG seek to finish the job on home soil. 

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique dismissed any suggestions of dressing room disharmony as the reigning European champions prepared to put their continental title on the line this midweek against domestic rivals Monaco.PSG are struggling to rediscover the brilliant form they showed in the second half of last season, when they played breath-taking football on the way to winning the Champions League for the first time in their history.The club from the French capital were knocked off the top of the Ligue 1 table at the weekend after a 3-1 defeat away to Rennes allowed Lens to climb above them. That came after a start to 2026 which had already seen them go out of the French Cup to local rivals Paris FC and finish 11th in the league phase of the Champions League. Theirfailure to win any of their last three European games left them facing this play-off for a place in the last 16.After the defeat in Rennes, last year's Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele had a go at his colleagues as he suggested too many had stopped playing for the collective. "We need to play for Paris Saint-Germain if we are going to win matches, because if we all just play for ourselves it won't work and we won't win the trophies we want to win," Dembele said in a post-match TV interview. "Last season we put the club first before thinking about ourselves, so I think we need to start thinking like that again."Enrique was asked about those comments after arriving in Monaco Monday, on the eve of the Champions League play-off first leg against the principality side. "There is always noise around PSG and we just have to accept it," said the Spaniard, who said the defeat in Rennes was "cruel" on his side. "It is true that we would have liked to come into this game with a victory but now it is time for the Champions League and we are all motivated."PSG are strong favourites to beat a Monaco side who sit eighth in Ligue 1, 20 points behind their opponents. However, Monaco have found some form again recently after a poor run, and they beat PSG 1-0 when the teams last clashed, at the Stade Louis II in late November."We ‌can expect a match ⁠similar to the one we played, we’re not going ⁠to change anything because ⁠we're going to try to win this match,” Enrique added.He also dismissed concerns about facing a domestic rival in the Champions League. "It's football, it's the same thing, you have to try to do the same thing to ​win the match. What I hope is to see the best version of PSG."We started the Champions League last season with the same lack of efficiency, but when you look at the results we later had, it meant we were superior to our opponents, and that's what we're aiming for again. I'm sure we can ‌get back ​to that very quickly,” he added.Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli, who has a doubt over the fitness of French international midfielder Maghnes Akliouche insisted: "We need to believe we can get a result, otherwise there is no point playing the game."Monaco skipper Denis Zakaria: "If we are not at 100 percent and don't play the perfect game, it will be difficult for us."
