Federico Valverde lashed home a stunning effort from distance to snatch Real Madrid a late 3-2 victory at AEK Athens in the Champions League and preserve their 100 percent start.Jose Mourinho's side twice came from behind against the Greek champions before Valverde claimed all three points for his side, level with holders Paris Saint-Germain on four wins from four league phase games.Aboubakary Koita sent AEK ahead after 12 minutes and Jude Bellingham equalised with a sublime flick for the record 15-time winners. Stavros Pilios sent the Greek champions ahead with 15 minutes to go but Kylian Mbappe swiftly pulled Madrid level once again, setting the stage for Valverde's late winner.Madrid have now won seven straight games across all competitions.Mourinho started with Vinicius Junior on the left flank, after he missed the team's previous two matches through suspension, in La Liga. The hosts started with huge energy at the Agia Sophia stadium and it was not overly surprising when they took an early lead.Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved well from former Los Blancos striker Luka Jovic before Koita sent AEK ahead. The Mauritanian winger shifted cleverly inside Marc Cucurella and thumped home at the near post, catching out Courtois.However they inevitably began to tire and Madrid began to take the reins in the Greek capital. Kylian Mbappe fired over and Bellingham netted from close range but was shown to be offside. Moments later the England international scored again and nobody could deny him this one.Cucurella fired in a low cross and Bellingham produced a brilliant flicked finish to beat goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli. Former Chelsea defender Cucurella tested Brignoli and Bernardo Silva nodded off-target before the interval as Mourinho's team controlled the game.AEK reclaimed the lead in the 75th minute when the impressive Koita gently nudged the ball into Pilios's path and the Albania international finished through Courtois's legs from close range.Madrid immediately responded with Bellingham playing Denzel Dumfries in down the right. The Netherlands defender rolled a low ball across the six-yard box and this time Mbappe was able to finish. It was Mbappe's fourth goal in four Champions League games this season, netting once in each, and his 16th across all competitions.Madrid substitute Endrick sent Mbappe through on goal with five minutes remaining but Brignoli produced a sensational save to tip his strike against the crossbar. Valverde refused to give up on the three points and in the 92nd minute he lashed home across Brignoli to keep Madrid perfect. Liverpool collapse to defeat at FenerbahceDirk Kuyt got the better of his former club Liverpool as Fenerbahce twice came from behind for a famous 3-2 win in Istanbul that breathed new life into their Champions League campaign.Liverpool had won their opening three European games under Andoni Iraola, but were punished for sloppy defending in a surprise defeat. Trey Nyoni and substitute Alexander Isak twice put the visitors in front.But Liverpool, who lost twice away to Galatasaray last season, were beaten again in Istanbul as Englishmen Mason Greenwood and Archie Brown levelled before Vedat Muriqi's winner.Fenerbahce's interim boss Kuyt, who spent six years at Anfield as a player, was taking charge for just the second time after Ismail Kartal quit last week. The Turkish giants had taken just two points from their opening three Champions League games but made the most of Liverpool's generosity at the back.Liverpool's perfect Champions League start allowed Iraola the luxury of leaving out Isak and Florian Wirtz among five changes from Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Arsenal. Defeat cost Liverpool the chance to move level with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Champions League table as they sit. Victory moves Fenerbahce move up to 19th in the 36-team table.

Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant was saved by his own dog after a German Shepherd dog attacked him in the street, British media reported.Pennant needed more than 50 stitches after the incident and the 43-year-old posted a photo on social media showing his right leg heavily bandaged."So I was attacked by a German Shepherd, I tried to protect (my dog) King but the dog got my leg," Pennant, who retired in 2018, wrote on Instagram."I was on the floor with the dog still attached with no sign of letting go, until King intervened ... he fought the dog off and saved what could’ve been a horrendous situation for me."King suffered a minor leg injury."My hero, still protecting me and trying to look after me, King you’re a legend love you, man’s best friend," Pennant wrote.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said on Friday he will not ease off his high intensity demands despite suffering a series of injuries.The Reds are set to be without Dominik Szoboszlai, Jeremie Frimpong and Victor Munoz for the visit of Brighton on Sunday, while Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo have recently returned from injuries picked up on international duty.Iraola's high-energy style at Bournemouth reaped success which earned him the job at Anfield, but for the first time in his managerial career he is having to deal with the added toll of European football."The way we want to play you cannot play 70 per cent," Iraola said at his pre-match press conference."Imagine you don't have a right-winger on the bench, I will put someone as a right-winger. I prefer to do this than you save your energy so you have to last 90 minutes."Give everything for 60 minutes, 65, 70, 72, then someone will do the 18, 35, whatever because we need to play full gas."I would like to say we are good enough to play 70 percent and win games but it's not (the case). We have to play our very best because the teams we have in front of us are very good."Liverpool go into the weekend four points adrift of third-placed Brighton, who are the Premier League's top scorers with 23 goals in seven games."I think they are doing incredibly well. They deserved all the praise they are getting and I think there is little doubt there. I think it's a team that is very well coached," Iraola said."We have to be at our very best to beat Brighton because now they are with confidence. But I also see my team in a good place."Szoboszlai's return from injury was cut short in last weekend's victory at Brentford, but Iraola is hopeful the Hungarian will not be sidelined for long."I don't think he's far, but he hasn't trained with the group still and also considering that we started him and he had to go out, we will probably take one or two days more than we would last week," said the Spaniard."He's in a good place. Dom is already training outside alone and he's going to train with the group but he's not ready for this one." 

Liverpool must be patient with midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai's recovery from a hamstring injury, while right back Jeremie Frimpong is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a fresh muscle problem, head coach Andoni Iraola said on Monday.The pair were forced off during Liverpool's 2-1 Premier League win at Brentford on Saturday."Frimpong has a new muscle injury ... Difficult to predict. We will have to wait until he recovers, but it is going to be difficult before the (November 9-17 international) break ...," Iraola said ahead of Liverpool's Champions League match against Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday.Frimpong's setback comes after a difficult spell since moving from Bayer Leverkusen last year, with the 25-year-old Dutch international struggling for fitness and form.Szoboszlai's situation is less concerning, however, with the Hungary captain suffering a recurrence of the issue that sidelined him for Liverpool's 3-0 home defeat by Manchester City and their 6-3 Champions League win at LASK."Szoboszlai is different, it's not a new injury. I think it is in the same place it was in the past week. It hasn't worsened. We probably have to be a bit patient until he recovers fully, but it is not like he has to wait a long time to come back," Iraola said.The 25-year-old has been a mainstay for Liverpool, scoring three goals in eight games in all competitions this season.Iraola is already contending with a number of long-term absentees, including forward Hugo Ekitike, right back Conor Bradley and centre back Giovanni Leoni.Liverpool are fifth in the Premier League with 12 points from seven matches and host Villarreal, looking to build on a perfect start to their Champions League campaign, having taken six points from their opening two games. 

Bradley Barcola silenced his critics as the Liverpool forward ended his goal drought with a hat-trick in a chaotic 6-3 win against LASK in the Champions League on Wednesday.Barcola had come under fire for some lacklustre performances since his blockbuster £123 million ($161 million) move from Paris Saint-Germain in August. But the France forward finally started to live up to his hefty price tag with his first goals for Liverpool in his seventh appearance.Barcola struck twice before the interval at the Raiffeisen Arena after Ronald Araujo put Liverpool ahead in the first half with his maiden goal for the club. Jeremie Frimpong netted the fourth after the break against the Austrian champions before Barcola completed his treble.There was still time for Lewis Koumas to score his first Champions League goal as Liverpool maintained their 100 percent record in this season's tournament after beating Atletico Madrid in their opening game. It was a welcome boost for Iraola following his first defeat in eight games as Liverpool manager when Premier League leaders Manchester City won 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday.Iraola this week said he has "100 per cent" trust in Barcola and Florian Wirtz, who has struggled mightily since joining from Bayer Leverkusen last year. Injuries to Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai, who all missed the trip to Austria, increased the pressure on Wirtz and Barcola to carry the Liverpool attack.The pair repaid Iraola's faith with a much-needed display of their undoubted qualities. Now Iraola will demand they produce that level of intensity and quality on a regular basis.The trip to Linz was the second of six games in 18 days for Liverpool, forcing Iraola to make changes in a bid to save his players from burnout.Reds captain Virgil van Dijk, Milos Kerkez, Alexis Mac Allister and Victor Munoz were all rested as Frimpong, Kostas Tsimikas, Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha came in.After some disjointed displays at the start of Iraola's reign, this was an indication of what they can become under the former Bournemouth boss, although he will still be concerned about their defensive issues. Araujo put Liverpool ahead in the 22nd minute, rising highest to meet Tsimikas's corner with a thumping header past LASK keeper Lukas Jungwirth.The on-loan Barcelona defender's goal was swiftly followed by one for Barcola 96 seconds later. Ngumoha was the catalyst with an incisive run into the LASK area and Barcola applied the finishing touch as he guided a clinical finish beyond Jungwirth.Iraola's men were running riot and Barcola scored their third in the 37th minute. It was a riposte to the criticism of Wirtz and Barcola as the pair combined to cut through the LASK defence.Barcola picked out Wirtz and the German played a pinpoint return pass that allowed the 24-year-old to fire past Jungwirth. Frimpong has also frustrated Liverpool fans since signing last year, making his goal in the 51st minute a welcome tonic for the Dutch right-back.Tsimikas got to the byline and lofted a cross towards Frimpong, who belied his diminutive stature with a towering header into the bottom corner. Robert Ljubicic reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute with a composed finish from Yvan Dibango's pass.But Barcola sealed his treble with a nimble finish from Frimpong's pass in the 66th minute. Teed up by Frimpong, Koumas hit Liverpool's sixth with a searing strike in the 72nd minute.Despite the introduction of Van Dijk and fellow defender Joe Gomez, Liverpool lost control in the closing stages. Florian Flecker's diving header two minutes later punished slack Liverpool defending. Flecker struck again with a close-range finish in the 77th minute, but nothing could spoil Barcola's big night. 

Manchester City shrugged off the threat of swingeing sanctions to beat 10-man Liverpool 3-0 in their first game since being found guilty on more than 100 charges of breaking Premier League financial rules.Second half goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki extended City's flawless start under Enzo Maresca after Ryan Gravenberch had been sent-off for two yellow cards.Victory reestablishes City's three-point lead at the top of the table, but the future of any title challenge rests on the outcome of the club's appeal against widespread financial impropriety. An independent commission found City and their Emirati owners arranged "sham" deals to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs by more than £900mn ($1.2bn) between 2009 and 2018.No sanction has yet been handed down, but a severe points deduction or even expulsion from the English top-flight are on the table unless City overturn the decision. There has even been speculation there could be retrospective action to strip titles.The multiple breaches of Premier League laws came during a period in which City won three titles and a clutch of other trophies. City's rivals believe, however, that the illegal spending during that period also built the foundations for a golden era under former boss Pep Guardiola, who left at the end of last season.Liverpool were one of the clubs most affected, having finished second to City three times in the past 12 years.City arrived under the protection of a police escort with a hostile Anfield welcome expected, but there was no repeat of the violent scenes when their team bus was pelted by bottles ahead of a Champions League clash in 2018.Liverpool fans lined the streets to greet the visitors with chants of "cheats" and "going down", while merchandise stalls were littered with flags and scarves mocking City's financial scandal. In the iconic Kop end behind one goal a banner read "a generation of supporters cheated."The battles between Guardiola's City and Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in recent years became the Premier League's marquee event. But with the eyes of the world watching, Liverpool failed to rise to the occasion on the field.New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola's options were blunted without the injured Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo as the Spaniard suffered his first defeat since taking charge of the Reds. The home side briefly flickered into life at the start of the second half when Lewis Koumas was denied a goal on his first Premier League start by Gianluigi Donnarumma.An Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008 transformed City from mid-table mediocrity into the dominant force of the English game. City's economic might was in full show help turn the game as Maresca could turn to Jeremy Doku off the bench early in the second half.Within minutes the Belgian winger had been chopped down by Gravenberch, who was shown a harsh second booking and Liverpool never recovered.Doku's deflected shot was then smashed home by Haaland to break the deadlock 25 minutes from time and open the floodgates.Three minutes later Doku curled a sensational strike into the top corner himself. Cherki then exchanged a slick one-two with Josko Gvardiol before slotting under Alisson Becker to rub salt in Liverpool wounds. 

France winger Bradley Barcola has become Liverpool's second-most expensive signing after joining the Premier League giants from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday. A source close to PSG told AFP that Barcola's transfer is worth "125mn euros (£107mn, $145mn) plus 20 million euros in easily achievable bonuses".The total fee of £124 million is second only to the £125 million Liverpool paid Newcastle for Sweden star Alexander Isak.Barcola's fee is the highest ever paid for a Ligue 1 player. It is also the 10th £100mn-plus transfer in Premier League history and the fourth such deal completed this summer.The 23-year-old is the third forward costing over £100mn that Liverpool have signed in two years. Isak arrived at Anfield last year and Liverpool also paid around £100mn to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Neither player has yet lived up to the hefty price tag, although Isak missed much of last season due to injury.Barcola, who signed what Liverpool said was a "long-term deal", had yet to play for PSG this season amid the transfer speculation. "It's a great pride to be able to play for Liverpool. I'm very happy," he told his new club's website on Monday."It took a long time but I'm really happy today to be able to play for Liverpool and all I want is to be on the pitch and be able to play. I hope to achieve very big things. First of all, winning the Premier League - it's one of my biggest dreams in my life. It is to do that and to stay in this team in the long term - that's why I signed a long contract - and I hope I can do it."Barcola, a member of the PSG squad which won back-to-back Champions League titles in the past two seasons, has long been a Liverpool target. He scored 39 goals in 152 appearances and won three successive Ligue 1 titles during his time in the French capital after joining PSG from domestic rivals Lyon in a £38.6mn deal in 2023.Barcola also scored three goals for France during their run to the semi-finals at the recent World Cup. Rebuilding the attackLiverpool have been looking to strengthen in wide areas since the departure of Mohamed Salah at the end of last season. Luis Diaz's departure the season before left Liverpool's forwards without service from the wings. They have already signed Spain World Cup-winning winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna in the current transfer window and he has made a bright start, scoring the equaliser in Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, which followed the same scoreline in their Premier League opener at Newcastle on August 23.Barcola is expected to play on the left wing, with Cody Gakpo pushed down the pecking order and linked with a move to Manchester City. Barcola's arrival at Anfield sees him reunited with former PSG team-mate and current fellow France international Hugo Ekitike, who is recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. "I don't know Jeremy (Jacquet), but I was able to talk to Hugo, who I met in the French team and in my old club," said Barcola. "He was waiting for me to sign the contract, sending me messages often asking me if I was coming or not."I can't wait to get back together and be able to play with him. I already said (told him) that it is done." Barcola was not always first-choice at PSG, with Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue providing stiff competition for places, but he still played a key part in their Champions League triumphs. 

Andoni Iraola escaped defeat on his Anfield debut as Liverpool manager thanks to Victor Munoz's strike that salvaged a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest. Forest were set to win at Anfield for the third consecutive season on Saturday as Dan Ndoye and Morgan Gibbs-White's penalty twice put the visitors in front.Alexander Isak briefly brought Liverpool level in the second half before Munoz's deflected effort rescued a late point for the second time in Iraola's two matches in charge. "It's quite clear the first half has been poor, we haven't controlled the game," said Iraola. "We improved a lot in the second half, much more intense, much quicker on the ball but not enough to win the game."Liverpool will hope to have Bradley Barcola to unleash by the time they are next in action at Ipswich on Friday. The French winger has been one of the Reds' top targets for months and a £106 million ($144 million) deal with Paris Saint-Germain, which could rise by a further £17 million, is reportedly close to completion.Iraola said he was hoping for a special day to mark his first match in charge at the club's iconic home, but instead got a reminder of why he was given the chance to replace the sacked Arne Slot. The Dutchman led Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in the 2024/25 campaign but was dismissed after finishing fifth last season.A record £450 million outlay on new signings 12 months ago continues to bear little return on investment as full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong were subbed off, while Isak and Florian Wirtz again struggled to make the impact expected for enormous transfer fees.And Liverpool remain brittle at the back as a Forest side that failed to score in their opening two games under Oliver Glasner created an abundance of chances. "There are two emotions I think," said Glasner. "Very proud of the performance and how we played, scoring two goals, but we all feel frustrated about the result because we have the feeling it could and should have been a win."Jeremy Jacquet had to produce a brilliant last-ditch block to deny Igor Jesus, and Ndoye headed narrowly wide before Forest took the lead on 24 minutes. Liverpool were a shambles at the back as a long punt forward saw Jesus bear down on goal. He was eventually dispossessed, but Gibbs-White teed up Ndoye to find the far corner.In keeping with his Liverpool career to date, Wirtz showed flashes of brilliance without stamping his authority on the game. The German playmaker was denied an equaliser when his goal was ruled out for offside against Frimpong in the build-up. At the other end a vital save from Alisson denied Ndoye a second in first-half stoppage time.Barcola's impending arrival could spell the end of Cody Gakpo's time at Anfield with Tottenham and Manchester City interested in the Dutch international. But Gakpo has been Liverpool's most effective forward in the opening two games of the season.His inch-perfect cross left Isak with a simple task of tapping home for the equaliser on the hour mark. Yet just as the home side were beginning the build momentum, they were struck by a sucker punch. Forest's new signing Liam Delap's quickly taken throw-in caught the Liverpool defence sleeping and Neco Williams was wiped out by Alisson as the goalkeeper raced off his line.Gibbs-White coolly sent the Brazilian number one the wrong way from the penalty spot to restore Forest's lead. Iraola emptied his bench to find a response and the decision to sacrifice Gakpo instead of Munoz paid off. Wirtz thread the eye of a needle with a through ball for the Spanish international, who blasted in off the crossbar for his first goal since joining from Osasuna.

Liverpool's owners have agreed to sell a minority stake in the Premier League club to a consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.US-based Fenway Sports Group, owners of the 20-time English champions, said they had agreed the deal with 1892 Holdings, a consortium led by British-Indian millionaire Amit Bhatia and also featuring Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, who co-founded Facebook.According to reports, the stake acquired by the consortium is around one-third of the club. American tycoon Bezos is the fourth-richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $256bn.Bezos is not expected to join Liverpool's expanded board of directors, which will reportedly feature Bhatia as the Premier League club's vice-chairman. But Bryan Baum, founder of the venture capital firm K5 Sports, which Bezos is using to invest in Liverpool, is set to become an Anfield board member, alongside Saverin's wife Elaine."Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club's long-term interests in mind. That approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders around the world," FSG president Mike Gordon said Friday."As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special."The deal is believed to place Liverpool's value at between £5bn ($6.8bn) and £6bn. It is Bezos's first investment in a sports team after he was previously linked with purchasing NFL franchises Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, has extensive experience of football boardrooms after serving as QPR co-owner for 18 years before stepping away from the English Championship club once his Liverpool link became public knowledge."We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG. We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield," Bhatia said."To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come."FSG underlined they would retain control of decision-making at Anfield, saying the stake sale would "support Liverpool's long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology, and investment"The consortium partners will work with FSG and the club's leadership team to evaluate opportunities that enhance the club's objectives on and off the pitch. FSG continues to retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool."FSG bought Liverpool for £300mn in 2010 and sold a minority stake of around three percent to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity three years ago.Liverpool start their Premier League campaign at Newcastle on August 23. They are looking to bounce back from a disappointing fifth place finish in the top-flight last season.That failure led to Arne Slot being sacked as Liverpool manager just 12 months after he masterminded the club's Premier League title triumph in his first season after succeeding Jurgen Klopp. With several weeks until the Premier League transfer window closes, the new investment could be a boost to Reds boss Andoni Iraola as he looks to strengthen his squad for the new season.Liverpool have so far spent around £94mn on signing Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz since the end of last term.
