Dan Lawrence's unbeaten fifty on Saturday left Pakistan needing to rewrite the record books in their quest for a series-levelling win against England in the second Test at Lord's.Only 24.5 overs were possible on a third day cut short by several rain delays and finally finished off by bad light, despite the floodlights shining under increasingly sunny skies.England still reached stumps on 177-7 in their second innings -- a huge overall lead of 357 runs -- with Lawrence exactly 50 not out to follow his comeback 51 during England's innings and 103-run rout of Pakistan in last week's first of a three-Test series at Headingley.Lawrence won just three caps in four years under the old England regime of now sacked Test coach Brendon McCullum and retired captain Ben Stokes, struggling badly as a makeshift opener in 2024."I think I got wrapped up in a lot of things when I played for England before," said Lawrence, recalled as a middle-order batsman.He added: "I'm batting in a position that's a little bit closer to what I'm used to and, thankfully, I contributed to the team."England may already have enough runs given Pakistan were dismissed for 171 and 135 in Leeds before collapsing to 110 all out in their first innings at Lord's, with England seamer Ollie Robinson taking a remarkable 4-11 in 13 overs.'MIRACLES DO HAPPEN'Pakistan will have to set a record if they are to achieve an improbable victory, with the highest fourth-innings total to win a Test at Lord's the West Indies's 344-1 back in 1984.Nevertheless, Pakistan paceman Mohammad Ali insisted: "Miracles do happen in cricket. We can only hope at this time and try to encourage the batting group."It'll be a difficult task but not impossible. Until the last ball is bowled in cricket, you can't make predictions."The Test still has a ways to run -- 350-400 has been chased in the past, too. It's all about mindset and belief. Conditions are tough, but we'll have to face that challenge and find a way to get runs."Mohammad Abbas was again in the wickets for Pakistan on Saturday, with 3-48 following the veteran seamer's four-wicket haul in England's first-innings 290.England, after Saturday's morning session was washed out completely, resumed on 81-3 in gloomy conditions and on a still green-tinged pitch that promised to aid Pakistan's bowlers. DOGGED 69-BALL EFFORTUnder-pressure opener Emilio Gay was 30 not out after a dogged 69-ball effort Friday, when he walked out to bat, averaging just 22.50 from his first eight Test innings.But the left-hander had added just one run when he was plumb lbw to an Abbas delivery that hardly bounced before hitting him on the back leg.Abbas might have had another wicket when a charging Lawrence edged a booming drive over the slips.Harry Brook, seven not out overnight, jumped down the pitch and whipped medium-pacer Khurram Shahzad through wide mid-on for four.Brook went down on one knee before edging a flamboyant drive off Shahzad that flew in the air through gully for another boundary.Brook fell for 34 to leave him still searching for a first Test century in over a year when well caught by wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan, standing up to the stumps, from an Abbas delivery that nipped off the pitch and bounced to graze the shoulder of the bat.An undaunted Lawrence then carved Mohammad Ali for four and next ball drilled him high over cover for six.Lawrence also slog-swept spinner Ali Usman for six on his way to a 64-ball fifty. BRIEF SCORES England 290 and 177 for 7 (Lawrence 50*, Abbas 3-48) lead Pakistan 110 by 357 runs

England have recalled Dan Lawrence from two years of Test exile to face Pakistan, with the batsman pencilled in to fill the middle-order vacancy created by the retirement of captain Ben Stokes.National selector Marcus North, announcing a 16-man squad for the first two matches of the three-Test series on Thursday, confirmed Lawrence would bat at number six.Jordan Cox, who replaces the injured Jacob Bethell, will bat at number three.Joe Root leads the side after being appointed for a second stint, with the first Test starting at Headingley on August 19.Lawrence has been in the international wilderness since he made his 14th Test appearance in September 2024, playing out of position as an opener against Sri Lanka.The Surrey batsman, 29, has been in impressive form in the County Championship this season, averaging more than 65, with five centuries.Cox, 25, made his debut against New Zealand in the second Test at the Oval in June, when he replaced Stokes, who was omitted after he broke a team curfew.Fast bowler Brydon Carse is included after missing the 2-1 series loss to New Zealand because of an injury to his right hand.Marcus Trescothick will be the hosts' interim head coach before former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming replaces compatriot Brendon McCullum as England's red-ball supremo.Former England vice-captain Ollie Pope has also been recalled, having been discarded after a run of low scores during England's 4-1 Ashes series loss in Australia.Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir has been retained, although it remains to be seen if England will deploy a specialist slow bowler in Leeds.England have lost seven of their past nine Tests and are without a series win since December 2024."We have selected a squad for the first two Tests that balances rising talent with the experience needed against a quality Pakistan team," said former Australia batsman North."Dan Lawrence returns following an exceptional season so far with Surrey and we believe he has the right level of experience, maturity and skill to complement our middle order."Jordan Cox is well regarded as one of the most exciting talents in English cricket and will have the opportunity to bat at three in place of Jacob Bethell, who sadly misses this series through injury."Pakistan will arrive off the back of drawing a two Test series, 1-1, with the West Indies.England squad for the first two Tests: Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jordan Cox, Joe Root (capt), Harry Brook, Dan Lawrence, Jamie Smith (wkt), Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir, Sam Cook, Matthew Fisher, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson 

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung met Singapore's Prime Minister ‌Lawrence Wong Monday for ​a summit ‌aimed at expanding co-operation in ‌fields ⁠such ‌as artificial intelligence and ‌nuclear energy, during a state visit to ⁠the city-state.At a joint press conference, Lee and Wong announced the start of negotiations to upgrade the countries' existing free trade agreement, which took effect in 2006.The ​countries also signed five memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for co-operation in fields such ‌as small modular ⁠reactors (SMRs) for ​nuclear power generation, AI and ​other scientific fields such as quantum and space satellites, South Korea's Blue House said.Other partnerships will include co-operation on investment between Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Temasek and its asset management unit Seviora Group with state-run Korea Development Bank, ‌Lee told the ‌press conference."Singapore ⁠is a meaningful place where ⁠the historic US-North ⁠Korea summit was held in 2018," Lee said. "I trust that you will continue to play a constructive role for peace on the Korean Peninsula ​and in the region."Wong and Lee exchanged views on the impact of the situation in the Middle East, including on global security, energy, and supply chains, and agreed on their hope that stability and ‌peace would be ​restored, Lee said. 

His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani sent a written message to Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong, pertaining to bilateral relations and ways to support and develop them. The message was handed over by ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Singapore Abdulaziz bin Ahmed al-Malki during his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. 

Aston Martin Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll said Tuesday the team is set to embark on a "development journey" as Formula One readies for its ‌biggest technical overhaul in decades.Speaking in Tokyo at an ‌event to launch Aston ‍Martin's partnership with Honda, Stroll had high hopes for the team's new power unit ⁠but acknowledged they would have ⁠no idea how it would stack up against their rivals until ‍they get on track."We're all sitting here anxiously waiting to get on track and I really don't think we'll have the answer to that question before we get to Melbourne," he said."And even when we get to Melbourne, you know these rules and regulations will be in place for five years."Formula One ‌faces a new engine era in the upcoming season as well as the rule changes. The sport will see thinner and lighter cars and ‍a 50/50 split on ⁠internal combustion, using ‌sustainable fuel, and electric power.Testing starts behind closed doors in Barcelona on January 26, before the 2026 championship begins with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in early March.Honda unveiled the new power unit for the 2026 season at the event, marking the official start of its exclusive supply deal with Aston Martin."There'll be reliability issues, there'll be all sorts of things," Stroll said, adding that he believed it was the first time in Formula One history that teams ​faced a new chassis and ‌power unit at the same time."There'll be a lot of issues to contend with, but ⁠we're very positive."Aston Martin ‍enters the season as a works team with Honda and with new team principal Adrian Newey leading the design of the new car.Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said he believed electrification technology became more important this year in order to win given the engine's electric power ​usage."We want to show that Honda's technology is world class, even in the age of electrification," he said.Andy Cowell, Aston Martin's chief strategy officer, said Honda and Aston Martin had set tough targets and were already deep into validation testing."We want to win. But we understand that Formula One is the pinnacle of motor sport," he said."It's really exciting," he added. "Pulling together an Adrian Newey-designed ⁠Aston Martin Honda car is something that everybody is really revelling in." 

Oscar-winning US actor Jennifer Lawrence called Israel's war in Gaza a genocide and warned about the normalisation of lies in American politics during a Friday appearance at Spain's San Sebastian Film Festival."What's happening is no less than a genocide, and it's unacceptable," Lawrence told a news conference when asked about the war that has devastated the Palestinian territory for almost two years.Turning to her own country, the 35-year-old said she was "terrified for my children, for all of our children", adding that "this disrespect and the discourse in American politics right now is going to be normal."For the younger generation, "it's going to be totally normal to them that politics has no integrity", warned the star of "Silver Linings Playbook", "American Hustle" and "Joy"."Politicians lie, there's no empathy, and everybody needs to remember that when you ignore what's happening on one side of the world, it won't be long until it's on your side as well."The US star was in the northern coastal city to receive the "Donostia" lifetime achievement award, with a showing of her latest movie "Die, My Love".Co-produced by Lawrence and Martin Scorsese and directed by Lynne Ramsay, the film portrays how a couple's happiness at having a child turns sour, following a series of works that provide a different perspective on motherhood.Lawrence, a mother of two children, said the movie reminded her of her difficult postpartum following the birth of her second child."It's really bizarre, watching the movie now and seeing everything in retrospect, after feeling like I've been through that forest," she said.
