Zverev stars as Team Europe win Laver Cup

Alexander Zverev clinched Team Europe's Laver Cup victory over Team World as the two-time Grand Slam champion beat Learner Tien at London's 02 Arena on Sunday.World number two Zverev battled to a 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 win against Tien, ensuring Team Europe regained the Laver Cup with tournament co-founder Roger Federer watching in the stands.Team Europe wrapped up their 13-5 success against Team World on the final day of the exhibition event, which started on Friday.Zverev's Team Europe colleague Carlos Alcaraz this week said the German was the best player in the world after his French Open and US Open victories this year.The 29-year-old struggled to live up to that billing when he lost in the doubles on Friday and let slip multiple match points in a defeat against Alex De Minaur on Saturday.But world number three Alcaraz wrestled back the initiative on Saturday before Zverev teamed up with Casper Ruud to win in the doubles.That left Team Europe only two victories from the trophy in Sunday's session.Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik moved Team Europe a step closer by beating Team World duo Taylor Fritz and De Minaur in the doubles.Zverev saved a set-point in the first set against Tien before overwhelming the 20-year-old American in the second set to seal the silverware for Yannick Noah's squad.It was only the second victory for Team Europe in the last five editions of the Ryder Cup-style event, which started in 2017 and does not award ranking points."I haven't won a match here in two years, so I'm happy that I did it today," Zverev said."Massive credit to the entire Team World. They pushed us all the way again. They were champions last year."This year, we had a great team chemistry and I'm very happy that we won."

De Minaur stuns Zverev, Tien beats Cobolli as Team World take 5-3 lead in Laver Cup

Alcaraz shrugs off pressure of packed calendar at 'joyful' Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz said Thursday that competing in team events during a packed schedule helps bring back the "joy" of tennis as he prepares to spearhead Europe's Laver Cup challenge against Team World.The three-day tournament, taking place at London's O2 Arena from Friday, is effectively a high-profile exhibition, with no ranking points on offer.World number three Alcaraz is headlining Europe's challenge alongside US Open champion Alexander Zverev, while Team World's roster includes Australia's Alex de Minaur and former Grand Slam finalist Taylor Fritz.The Davis Cup is well established as the top team competition in men's tennis, but the Laver Cup was launched in 2017, with Roger Federer one of the driving forces.Alcaraz, who only returned to action at the US Open after a four-month injury lay-off, said in New York that he planned to play fewer tournaments in future, blaming an "impossible" tennis calendar for a rising number of injuries in the sport.But the Spaniard, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, was in positive mood on the eve of the Laver Cup, saying he relished being part of a team in a sport dominated by individual competition."I love team events, team tournaments," the 23-year-old said. "Spending time with them, having fun, as you could see the previous year, how much fun I had on the court, off the court."It is a week that I might be training, I might be resting or something, but these kind of weeks help me a lot to bring my joy back on the court, bring my joy back on playing tennis."It helps me a lot for the next tournaments when it is not team events." ZVEREV CHASING WORLD NUMBER ONE RANKZverev is chasing the world number one spot currently held by the sidelined Jannik Sinner after winning the French Open and US Open.But the world number two said he was putting individual targets aside this week.Zverev, who won the ATP Finals at the same venue in 2018, was asked whether he felt different after collecting his first two Grand Slams."Yes and no," the German said. "At the end of the day, we have great champions on the team who all know what it takes to win."For me, personally, it was quite a satisfying year but we're here at the Laver Cup as a team. I think for us, the main goal is to lift the Laver Cup trophy, to bring the Laver Cup trophy back to Europe."The event pits six men's players from Europe against six players from the rest of the world in singles and doubles matches.Team World defeated Team Europe 15-9 last year in San Francisco and has won three of the past four editions.Federer brought the curtain down on his illustrious career the last time the Laver Cup was staged in London, in 2022.

Agassi demands proper break for exhausted tennis stars

Andre Agassi has demanded a proper off-season for exhausted tennis players as he prepares to lead Team World against Team Europe at the Laver Cup in London.The retired eight-time Grand Slam champion will captain a six-man group headlined by Australia's Alex de Minaur and former Grand Slam finalist Taylor Fritz at the three-day event, starting on Friday.The Laver Cup, played on a hard court, is effectively a high-profile exhibition, with no ranking points on offer.Agassi, 56, said he was always on the side of the players after US Open finalist Ben Shelton recently pulled out of the Ryder Cup-style event at the O2 arena."I said to him, 'Ben, before you can say anything, I need you to know that nothing matters more to me than my players'. And that's there, not just for the Laver Cup, but for their careers," Agassi told reporters on Thursday.Former world number one Agassi, who retired in 2006, said tennis had become more physically demanding since he quit."Courts and balls like these are sort of the most brutal form of the sport," he said. "And these guys still go out there and put themselves through it."I think that they cover more real estate than (vice-captain) Pat (Rafter) and I ever really had to do in our day." AGASSI SAYS PLAYERS DESERVE PROPER RESTAgassi said players deserve a proper rest at the end of each season -- long a talking point in the sport.This year the Davis Cup men's team competition finishes on November 29, with the Australian swing starting just a few weeks later."It would be my hope (for) an off-season of some relative form of security for both the players, but also for the fans so that they look forward to the game," said Agassi."Cut them back. Every sport has it. There are a lot of times in life where... less is more."I think in a lot of cases, tennis would benefit from that."But Agassi said despite the packed calendar, he would not want to lose the Laver Cup, named after Australia great Rod Laver."I'd hate to see the compromise ever come on an event like this that is hosted under such a magnificent name and person that none of us would be here today without in this game," he said."So this wouldn't be the place I would choose to cut some edges."But I would like to see these awesome athletes always be at their best. I think everybody wins with that."

Laver Cup to be played in Los Angeles in 2027

The Laver Cup, an annual showdown of men's tennis stars pitting Team Europe against Team World, will be played next year in Los Angeles, organizers announced on Wednesday. The Intuit Dome in suburban Inglewood, home to the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, will host the competition on September 24-26, 2027. Team Europe owns a 5-3 lead in the all-time rivalry but Team World has won three of the past four meetings entering this year's event in London in September, part of the ATP Tour calendar. Intuit Dome hosted February's NBA All-Star Game and will be the venue for basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "Los Angeles is one of the world's leading destinations for major sporting events," Laver Cup chief executive officer Steve Zacks said. "We can think of no better city and venue to host the 10th edition of the Laver Cup." Opened in August 2024 in Inglewood, California, Intuit Dome is the state-of-the-art home arena that was built with a privately funded $2 billion investment by owner Steve Ballmer. The 18,000-seat venue is engineered for an intense, "fan-first" basketball experience, experts say. The arena's design brings spectators exceptionally close to the action. Its defining structural feature is the Halo Board, a massive, double-sided 4K LED scoreboard stretching almost a full acre. For a passionate home-court advantage, the venue features "The Wall," an uninterrupted 51-row cheering section reserved exclusively for Clippers fans. Focused on convenience, the facility utilizes biometric and facial recognition technology for a completely cashless, ticketless, and frictionless experience. It also boasts three times the NBA average for restrooms to eliminate wait times. Operating with high sustainability standards, the all-electric, LEED Platinum-certified venue features an iconic gridshell exterior.

Fritz fires as Team World land third Laver Cup title

Taylor Fritz held off Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) to seal Team World’s triumph in the Laver Cup Monday as two wins for Carlos Alcaraz on the final day proved too little for Team Europe.Fritz fired a backhand volley winner on his first match point to give Team World a 15-9 victory over Europe in the global tennis event, sparking jubilant celebrations from his teammates and World captain Andre Agassi at Chase Center – home of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.“The energy from the team, it just feels the moments of winning feel so much better, the moments of losing feel so much worse because you’re doing it for all these guys,” Fritz said.“It just fires me up so much,” added the fifth-ranked American, who had beaten Alcaraz on Saturday when Team World swept all four matches to seize a 9-3 lead.Fritz had raced through the opening set against a weary-looking Zverev. The German stepped it up in the second set, but he was down a break and trailing 4-3 before he finally mustered his first break points of the night. He converted his third to level the set at 4-4 to the delight of his Europe teammates and captain Yannick Noah.A quick hold from Zverev left Fritz serving to stay in the set. He held to love and they battled to the tiebreaker, where Fritz took a 3-0 lead only for Zverev to win three straight points before Fritz won four of the final five.Alcaraz, fresh off his sixth Grand Slam title at the US Open, had kept Europe’s title defence alive with a blistering 6-2, 6-1 victory over Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.Alcaraz and Casper Ruud had sliced Europe’s deficit with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 doubles victory over Reilly Opelka and Alex Michelsen to open Sunday’s action. But Australian world number eight Alex De Minaur then beat Czech Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-4 to push Team World’s lead to 12-6, with 13 points needed to claim the Cup and each match on Sunday worth three points.De Minaur, a late replacement on Team World for Frances Tiafoe, had nabbed two wins on Saturday – beating Zverev in singles and coming through again in doubles.Team World regained the title they surrendered to Europe last year in Berlin.Europe have won five of eight editions of the event co-created by Swiss great Roger Federer, which will be held in London next year.
