South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday called for talks with North Korea to end their long-running state of war and explore ways to halt the advancement of Pyongyang's nuclear capabilities, pledging to pursue a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.Speaking at a ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of Liberation Day, Lee said: "Let us put down our intentions to threaten each other and begin discussions to end the long-running war as the directly involved parties. In the process, (we) may also discuss effective ways to halt the advancement of the North's nuclear capabilities."Lee said he will embark on a journey to end the war and replace the "unstable armistice system" with a peace regime.His call for dialogue came as North Korea has not responded to repeated initiatives proposed by Seoul since Lee took office in June last year.In his Liberation Day address last year, Lee pledged to respect North Korea's current system, reject unification through absorption and refrain from engaging in hostile acts against Pyongyang.The two Koreas have technically remained at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. 

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un paid respects at war memorials marking the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War armistice, state media KCNA reported Monday, with his daughter joining him for the first time at the commemorations. Kim visited cemeteries, met veterans and laid flowers at the graves of first-generation guerrilla fighters, while reiterating Pyongyang’s claim of a “great victory” in the 1950-1953 war, according to KCNA. The Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. North Korean state media photographs and video showed Kim’s daughter, known as Ju-ae, walking beside him during the visits, positioned at the centre of ceremonial formations and greeting elderly veterans alongside her father, underscoring her increasingly prominent public profile. Republic of Korea’s Unification Ministry said it was the first time Ju-ae had attended the armistice anniversary commemorations and her first visit to either the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs Cemetery or the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery. Republic of Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) believes Ju-ae has been positioned as Kim’s successor, based on “credible intelligence”, according to briefings by lawmakers this year. The assessment comes as Ju-ae has been periodically shown in state media accompanying her father. In March, images showed her driving a new tank, following earlier photographs of her firing a rifle at a shooting range and using a handgun. 

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw tests of key ‌weapons on Thursday as part of ​the country's goal to ‌modernise its missile programme and bolster firepower along ‌the southern ⁠border ‌with South Korea, state media ‌KCNA reported on Friday.The tests, conducted on ⁠the anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War, involved an upgraded version of a 240-mm, 24-tube multiple rocket launcher system, tactical ballistic missiles, and a 155-mm self-propelled howitzer, KCNA said.The upgraded rocket launcher is equipped with an ​autonomous precision guidance system, with its firing range extended to 90 kilometres (56 miles), the media report said.Kim, expressing ‌satisfaction with the test ⁠results, said Pyongyang ​was pursuing automation, long-range capability and "ultra-precision" ​in its weapons programmes, according to KCNA.The goal is for its defence along its southern border, Kim said, effectively referring to the one with South Korea.In May, North Korea said it had tested a mix of tactical ballistic missiles, artillery rockets and AI-guided precision cruise missiles designed for modern warfare.Pyongyang ‌has been steadily ‌upgrading its tactical ⁠and conventional arsenal, vowing to deploy weapons near the ⁠border with South ⁠Korea.Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University’s Institute for Far Eastern Studies, said the moves point to accelerating efforts to fortify the southern border and integrate nuclear and conventional forces as North Korea ​cements what it calls a relationship of two hostile states."The intent is ultimately to fully establish tactical nuclear and precision strike capabilities in forward units, placing all of South Korea within range," Lim said.South Korea’s Unification Ministry said the tests appeared to be part of North Korea’s five-year defence ‌development plan.
