West Indies crush Bangladesh by eight wickets in first Test

Brandon King struck a career-best 81 not out as West Indies cruised to an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first Test on Saturday to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.King hit 10 fours and a six in his 115-ball knock to help the visitors chase down the target of 170 in 35.1 overs on the fourth day in Mirpur after Bangladesh were bowled out for 142 in their second innings. Jomel Warrican, who was named player of the match, claimed 4-63 to follow up his five-wicket haul in Bangladesh's first innings as the hosts were bowled out in 48.4 overs.West Indies captain Roston Chase took 5-36 in the second innings, his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Chase said the team was determined to win the series and go up in the rankings."The guys were determined, even though we didn't have a good start in the first innings," Chase said."We lost the lead, but we were still determined to fight back and try to win the game, and that's what we did."Bangladesh had resumed the fourth day at 79-6, holding a lead of 106, but their hopes of setting a challenging target suffered an early blow when Jaker Ali edged Warrican to slip, where Chase took the catch. Jaker, who scored 22 off 34 balls, was the second-highest scorer for Bangladesh in the innings.Nayeem Hasan survived two dropped catches off Chase, on 21 and 29, to keep Bangladesh going. He added 26 runs with Hasan Mahmud before Warrican trapped the latter lbw for eight.Taijul Islam contributed eight in a 17-run partnership with Nayeem before Chase dismissed him to leave Bangladesh at 127-9. Nayeem then reached his maiden Test half-century off 87 balls, with four boundaries, but his resistance ended when he attempted to hit Chase over long-on and was caught by Joshua Bishop.He made 52 off 91 balls, while Shoriful Islam remained unbeaten on seven as Bangladesh were dismissed cheaply. Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said his team failed to execute their plans."All three departments didn't do well, especially in the field. These things can happen sometimes, but I believe the intention and preparation were quite good," he said."Going forward, we need to look at those areas and work out how we can do better in these conditions."West Indies started confidently, with openers King and John Campbell continuing their aggressive approach to take the visitors to 64 without loss in 14.1 overs before rain interrupted play. After a delay of around an hour, they added another 23 runs before bad light and lightning forced a further stoppage of 45 minutes.King was dropped on 70 by substitute fielder Ebadot Hossain off Taijul after the break, but the opener made Bangladesh pay with his fine, unbeaten knock. Campbell fell just short of a half-century, bowled by Shoriful for 49 off 55 balls, with six fours and a six.The second Test will be played in Sylhet from November 5. BRIEF SCORES West Indies 245 (Chanderpaul 56, Campbell 54, Hasan 4-33) and 170 for 2 (King 81*, Campbell 49, Hodge 31*) beat Bangladesh 272 (Islam 105, Warrican 5-53) and 142 (Hasan 52, Chase 5-36, Warrican 4-63) by eight wickets.

Abdurisag strikes as Qatar beat Yemen

Yusuf Abdurisag produced a winning goal even as talismanic Akram Afif missed from the spot as Qatar steered past Yemen 1-0 in their second group stage match of 27th Gulf Cup at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on Sunday.It was Qatar’s second straight win and took their tally to six points and top spot in Group B. The UAE, who have three points, were playing Bahrain (1pt) in their second game.Qatar, who are 86 places above Yemen in the FIFA world rankings, somehow lacked their usual attacking flair against Yemen although Abdurisag’s 64th-minute goal was as heart-warming as much as it was spectacular.Sultan Al Brake sent in a cross from the left which went past Abdurisag to Edmilson Junior on the right. The Brazilian quickly sent it back to Abdurisag in the centre inside the 6-yard box, who controlled the ball well to beat the rival goalkeeper, a defender alike.Qatar showed right intent from the very start but Afif fired one wide from a good position while a Karim Boudiaf header flew over the bar.Hassan Al Haydos, who came off the bench to score in Qatar’s 2-0 win over Bahrain on Thursday, started and tested Yemen goalkeeper Mohammed Aman with a long-range shot, but the keeper dived to make the save.An injury forced Issa Laye off early in the match, with Jassim Gaber coming on as his replacement.Goalkeeper Aman denied Afif twice before the half-hour mark. First, he stopped a volley from the Al Sadd star before blocking his shot after Al Haydos sent a long ball into the box.Ayoub Alawi failed to connect with a header from a promising position as the stalemate continued at the interval.Edmilson replaced Hashim Ali after the half time break.Meanwhile, Aman continued his brilliant goalkeeping, stopping Abdurisag’s header shortly after the interval. Boualem Khoukhi, who scored against Bahrain, then headed just wide of the right post.Abdurisag finally put Qatar ahead four minutes later. The Maroons could have doubled their lead soon, but Aman well-judged Afif’s kick from the spot while diving to his left.Pedro Miguel, who was pushed by Hamzah Ghaleb, had won the penalty following a corner kick.Khoukhi blocked Adel Abbas Qasem’s attempt as Yemen tried to make a late comeback, but Qatar held on for victory.

Ukraine stun holders Italy to reach first Billie Jean King Cup final

Ukraine's Elina Svitolina and Anhelina Kalinina swept aside twice defending champions Italy in the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals on Saturday, sending the country to the final for the first time and setting up a showdown with Czech Republic.World No. 48 Kalinina laid the foundation for victory with a 6-3 6-4 win over 18-year-old Italian Tyra Caterina Grant, ranked 102 places below her.Australian Open semi-finalist Svitolina then faced former French Open and Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini, but the 32-year-old needed little time to stamp her authority on the match, cruising to a 6-2 6-2 win to seal an unassailable 2-0 lead.The world No. 7 broke Paolini three times in the opening set and added two more breaks in the second to complete the win in one hour and three minutes.The victory also gave Ukraine revenge for last year's 2-1 semi-final defeat by Italy. It was achieved despite the absence of world No. 10 Marta Kostyuk, sidelined by a wrist injury.Ukraine now face the Czech Republic, who booked their first Billie Jean King Cup final outing since 2018. Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova secured straight-sets wins against Spain, keeping the Czechs on course for a 12th title.Italy lifted the trophy in each of the last two years, including a 2-0 victory over record 18-times champions the United States in last year's final, to take their tally in the premier women's team competition to six titles.
