Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff has backed George Russell for future success after Red Bull's former motorsport adviser Helmut Marko dismissed the Briton's chances of ever recovering from being eclipsed by teammate Kimi Antonelli.Antonelli is 123 points clear of Russell atop the Formula One standings, with 125 still to be won, and is set to become the sport's youngest-ever champion in Mexico City this weekend as well as the first Italian champion since 1953.The 20-year-old has now won nine times in his second season to three for the more experienced Russell, who started the year as the bookmakers' favourite."Russell is no longer the number one driver." Marko, who left Red Bull last year, told Sky Germany ahead of Sunday's US Grand Prix, which Antonelli won from pole while Russell laboured home in eighth after collecting a five-second penalty."Antonelli has quite clearly taken that spot from him ... I doubt whether he'll ever have another chance at the world title or be given number one status anywhere," added the 83-year-old.Wolff said while he respected the opinion of his fellow Austrian "not-so buddy", Marko was wrong."George has all the ability. I think the car doesn't suit him," he told reporters at the Circuit of the Americas."At the beginning of the season it's maybe difficult to cope with a situation where you're feeling like this is my year to come and then you have this wunderkind on the other side (of the garage) that starts to really chip away."I believe that in a new season, George -- if we provide him with a quick car -- has absolutely what he needs to win a championship."I think it's a bit too easy to say let's forget about all these years where he won in F2 and in F3, in his rookie years in the European championships back-to-back in kart. That's all still there."

* Antonelli leads Russell by 102 points with 125 still available after Austin* Russell needs to rebound after Singapore crash and engine penalty* Verstappen carries momentum after two wins in a row Kimi Antonelli is set to become Formula One's youngest champion, and Italy's first in 73 years, but the 20-year-old Mercedes driver will have to win and hope the stars align if he is to convert his first 'match point' in Texas on Sunday.Four years old when Sebastian Vettel became the hitherto youngest champion at 23 with Red Bull in 2010, the racer from Bologna has a mighty 102-point lead over teammate George Russell ahead of the US Grand Prix in Austin.There will be a maximum 125 points remaining to win after the chequered flag drops at the Circuit of the Americas, meaning Antonelli -- in his second season at the pinnacle of motorsport -- will clinch the title if he extends his lead by 23.Only a win would give him that margin but the Italian will still need Russell and Ferrari's seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton to finish no higher than ninth or fifth respectively. Otherwise the wait to become Italy's first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953 rolls on to at least Mexico City a weekend later."I know it's very close, I know it's there, but I just need to make sure that I keep doing the best I can. You know, the mindset is always the same, to go out there and win and perform the best way I can," Antonelli said after finishing third in Singapore, the race before Austin.That result was his 14th podium of the season. ONE-IN-25 CHANCE OF TAKING TITLE IN AUSTIN?"We're in that very uncomfortable phase of the season where you have to navigate the Thursday media with everyone saying 'Oh, you could do it... you've got a first match point'," said deputy principal Bradley Lord in a team podcast."People love this tennis comparison of match points, don't they? But I think there's something like a one-in-25 chance of that being remotely possible in Austin."Our focus is how can we get the car in its sweet spot and then go and score as many points as possible?"Russell, who crashed in the Singapore sprint and then started the main race at the back of the grid due to an engine penalty, will be thinking exactly that.Antonelli has won eight of 17 rounds so far but the momentum has been more with Red Bull's four-time champion Max Verstappen, winner of the last two races in Malaysia and Singapore and also last year's winner in Austin from pole position."You look at the recent races and Red Bull have been very much best. In Baku, Max was a similar level to me. We go to Malaysia, a totally different track, and Singapore another different track, and he's dominated the last two weekends," said Russell.Verstappen is 119 points behind Antonelli and has said he just wants to have fun for the remaining races, given the championship pressure is off.Both Mercedes drivers will have the latest upgrade package for the first of three successive race weekends in Texas, Mexico and Brazil.McLaren's reigning champion Lando Norris was runner-up in Austin last year with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc third and both could be in the mix again while Hamilton's record in the United States is second to none."The last few races have not been great for us, but I think we're getting stronger again and Austin is probably a better circuit for our car," said McLaren's chief technical officer Rob Marshall, whose team will also have some upgrades.The weekend will also see a novel crossover, with four MotoGP riders set to take to the track for a demonstration ride on Saturday. The two-wheeled series and Formula One have a common owner in US-based Liberty Media. 

Mercedes driver George Russell could take another engine penalty at next month's Las Vegas Grand Prix, by which time teammate Kimi Antonelli is likely to have clinched the Formula One championship.Russell, second in the standings but 102 points behind the Italian with six rounds remaining, started at the back of the grid in Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix after exceeding his season's allocation of power units.He said last week that he would be taking another penalty before the end of the season."It’ll probably be later in the season now, to be honest. Maybe looking at Vegas," he told Sky Sports television after finishing ninth at Marina Bay."Now we’ve got the choice to take it when we wish, and we’ll be choosing a slightly easier track than this one."Russell and Mercedes had not planned to take a new engine in Singapore, a circuit where it is hard to overtake, but their hands were forced by a failure that sidelined the Briton at the previous Bahrain round in Malaysia and gave them no choice.Austin, Texas would have been the preferred choice option on October 25.Antonelli, 20, has his first chance to become the sport's youngest ever champion in Austin.The winner of eight Grands Prix this year will have to win there, however, to become Italy's first champion since 1953 with five rounds to spare -- and it will still depend on Russell or Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton not scoring enough to remain in contention.Mexico a week later, or Brazil the weekend after, look more likely venues to witness the championship success before Las Vegas.There can be no doubt that Antonelli will prevail eventually, with third-placed Hamilton now 111 points adrift and only 125 available after Austin.If Antonelli wins in Texas then Red Bull's Max Verstappen, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren's reigning champion Lando Norris will be out of title contention immediately.Four-times champion Verstappen, winner on Sunday, will be chasing his third successive victory in the next race. 

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli topped the times for Mercedes ahead of both Red Bulls in Saturday's third and final free practice ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.The 20-year-old Italian produced a late fastest lap of 1min 36.302sec to outpace four-time champion Max Verstappen by 0.278 seconds with Isack Hadjar third, adrift by half a second. His Mercedes team-mate George Russell was fourth, six-tenths off the pace, ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. World champion Lando Norris was seventh ahead of McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Franco Colapinto, who faces a 15-place grid penalty for Sunday's race after crashing in Baku last week and taking a new engine, was ninth for Alpine ahead of Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad.Verstappen once again showed his prowess with a brief appearance on softs in an uneventful session run in hot and humid conditions, but the action was mainly concerned with tyre evaluation and preservation. It began in leisurely fashion with only two cars venturing out in the heat, with the serious stuff only starting when Leclerc and Norris joined in after 15 minutes. The first meaningful times did not come until Norris topped Leclerc and Gasly in 1:37.161, as most teams looked to save their tyres for qualifying later Saturday. With 25 minutes run, both Mercedes, both Red Bulls, Antonelli and Hamilton remained in the pits, while Norris and Piastri, on mediums, topped the time-screens ahead of Leclerc, on hards, with the rest all on softs. The action paused mid-session for three minutes when a red flag as Oliver Bearman's Haas shed some brake shrouding at Turn 10.The big guns then joined the fray, with Antonelli going top in 1:36.924 ahead of Russell. Hamilton, still struggling with a faulty mirror, was then impeded on his first push run on softs. Ferrari had been fined 10,000 euros ($11,260) on Friday when his mirror partly caused an impeding incident. It was a mostly unspectacular session until the final minutes, as the drivers lapped with care to keep tyres cool and fresh before their flying laps -- and needing to retain multiple sets of softs in particular. 

Kimi Antonelli has vowed to bounce back and rebuild his runaway advantage in the drivers' championship as Formula One returns to Malaysia this weekend.Sepang will host Sunday's race in place of Bahrain, which was supposed to stage the Grand Prix in April but was cancelled because of war in the Middle East.The 20-year-old Antonelli, who finished fifth last weekend in Azerbaijan, leads Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 66 points following the Briton's commanding triumph in Baku.Hampered by a hydraulics failure in practice, Italy's Antonelli crashed in qualifying and started 16th on the grid as he was beaten by Russell for the first time in six races.Antonelli said he intends to "re-establish the order" at Sepang International Circuit, which last hosted Formula One in 2017."He's always been my rival," he said of Russell's bid to overhaul him and snatch the title."But I'll make sure I re-establish the order and just make sure that I am back to my usual level."Antonelli joked that he was "driving more like my grandma" in Azerbaijan.Russell said his "game plan" is to try and prevail in all of the remaining eight race weekends this season. 'IRRELEVANT'Antonelli, seeking to be Italy's first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, was only 11 the last time Formula One was at Sepang.That race was won by Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who finished a close second behind Russell last Sunday and proved that he has the speed to become a threat to the Mercedes pair as the campaign approaches a climax.He and team-mate Isack Hadjar, who was third, demonstrated Red Bull's power and straight-line speed in Baku.But Ferrari and McLaren will also be major threats at Sepang in what should be a closely fought contest.Ferrari will be in battling mood as boss Fred Vasseur shrugs off rumours linking former Red Bull chief Christian Horner with his job and rallies the team to fight for every remaining point."We will bring upgrades and we will continue to push until the last corner," he said.He said that data from the Malaysia race in 2017 would be "practically irrelevant"."Everything has changed: tyres, engines and chassis are all completely different for everyone," he said.Ferrari on Tuesday declared they had "full confidence" in Vasseur, who had expressed frustration at being asked about Horner "25 times a day" in Baku. 'EMOTIONS ARE HIGH'World champion Lando Norris of McLaren also had reason to comment after Baku when he apologised to Alpine's Franco Colapinto for saying that the Argentine should be banned.Colapinto collided with his Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly, who in turn hit Norris. All three were taken out of the race."I sent Franco a message apologising for the comments I made that I simply should not have said," he said."I know better and emotions were running high, but that is not an excuse, it was wrong of me."After the chaos of the fast streets of Baku, a more "normal" race is in prospect, although the usual rain and storms are a factor in Malaysia.Half of the drivers will rediscover a much-loved fast, sweeping and flowing circuit.Others are taking it on for the first time.Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton will seek to add to his shared record (with Michael Schumacher) of five poles and one win.Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso will be hunting a record-equalling fourth Sepang victory.In a quirk, the race will officially still be called the Bahrain Grand Prix. 

Formula One's championship battle takes an intriguing twist this weekend as Mercedes teammates Kimi Antonelli and George Russell renew their rivalry at an unlikely venue, Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit.Although Sepang remains a permanent fixture on the MotoGP calendar, it has not hosted a Formula One race since 2017 after the Malaysian government said it could no longer justify the hosting costs given the declining returns.But the Mercedes duo will now be fighting for supremacy in what has been rebranded the "Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia" after the original Bahrain race was relocated from Sakhir due to the Iran war and Middle East tensions.Championship leader Antonelli arrives in Malaysia with a 66-point advantage over Russell after his 81-point cushion took a significant hit at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he endured what he called his "worst weekend" of the season.The Italian, who has won eight races this year and is on course to become his country's first F1 champion since Alberto Ascari 73 years ago, started 16th after a qualifying crash before salvaging fifth place.By Antonelli's own admission, it was not the version of himself we have seen for most of the year and after the 20-year-old struggled to find his usual rhythm in Baku, he can sense his team mate looming ever larger in the rearview mirrors."He's always been my rival. But I'll make sure I re-establish the order, just make sure that I will be back at my usual level because (in Baku) I was driving more like my grandma, so it wasn't the usual Kimi," Antonelli said."In the race, I didn't have the confidence, and I just drove at 80% the whole time."Realistically, I wasn't there mentally to be able to push 100% as well because I just didn't have the confidence that I had previous weekends. But it will be much better in Sepang." RUSSELL HAS MOMENTUM AFTER FIRST GRAND SLAMWith Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton trailing Antonelli by 103 points in third, the title fight has effectively become a straight duel at the top and Russell arrives brimming with the momentum and confidence he has built since the summer break.Baku was the Briton's weekend as he became only the seventh driver on the grid to achieve a Grand Slam -- pole position, leading in every lap, clocking the fastest lap and taking the victory, his third of the season.A championship fight that once seemed to be slipping away from Russell has suddenly returned to view."There's much less pressure on me than there is him," Russell said."He's had an incredibly flawless season, (qualifying in Baku) was probably his first mistake of this whole season in a proper session... and he still came home in P5."I didn't really consider myself in this fight for a number of races purely because my performance wasn't strong enough. Now I feel like if the season were to have started today, or since the summer break, I feel very much I would have been able to fight."The question remains whether Russell can turn one extraordinary weekend into a sustained challenge or if Antonelli will respond immediately with eight rounds remaining in the 23-race season.However, uncertainty looms over the calendar's conclusion, with doubts persisting whether the final two rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will proceed due to the ongoing regional conflict. 

George Russell claimed his first pole position in seven races on Friday when he took full advantage of his Mercedes team-mate and world championship leader Kimi Antonelli crashing during qualifying for this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix.The 28-year-old Briton clocked a best lap in one minute and 42.526 seconds to beat nearest rival Charles Leclerc of Ferrari by 0.837 seconds in windy conditions on the demanding streets of Baku.It was his first pole since the Austrian Grand Prix in June and the 12th of his career, boosting slim hopes that he can catch the young Italian who leads him by 81 points in the drivers' title race.Antonelli crashed during the first Q1 part of qualifying, hitting the inside of Turn One heavily and suffering car damage that ended his part in the session. He ended up qualifying 16th.Russell had never qualified better than fifth before in Baku, but drove with great confidence to establish his street credibility in commanding style."It's been a while," he said. "And it definitely feels good. That's probably the biggest margin of my whole career, even in the F2 and F3 days."So the lap felt really sweet and on a track like this when you can hug it up like that. So, it's amazing."I was feeling good. It was the perfect lap at the end. I got a little slipstream from (Isack) Hadjar which got me another tenth or two." 'FAIRLY BIG JOB'McLaren's Oscar Piastri was third ahead of Isack Hadjar, back for Red Bull after breaking his wrist, world champion Lando Norris, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari and Alpine's Pierre Gasly.Four-time champion Max Verstappen was eighth ahead of Williams Carlos Sainz, who clocked his first top 10 qualification this year, and Franco Colapinto in the second Alpine."Honestly, it was quite a good lap," said Leclerc, who enjoyed slipstreaming help from his teammate Hamilton."Lewis was a few seconds in front and I managed to do a good lap at the end, but when I see the gap to George maybe it wasn't good enough... Our straight-line speed is not our strength."Russell's lap-time advantage was the biggest since the 2003 Canadian Grand Prix. ANTONELLI CLIPPED THE WALLThe biggest talking point other than Russell's outstanding performance was the sight of his 20-year-old Antonelli clipping the wall in Q1 and picking up a puncture, his first crash since final practice in Australia.The 20-year-old Italian wanted to continue but race engineer Pete Bonnington overruled him, telling him it was a "fairly big job" and to come into the pits.It was the first time this season that Antonelli, who is romping away at the top of the championship with an 81-point lead over Russell, failed to reach Q3.He had already qualified for Q2 but had to settle for sitting on his helmet and watching on.He will line up in 16th but that is unlikely to deter him. Three weeks ago in Monza he came from 19th to take the chequered flag.The Grand Prix is being run on Saturday, rather than the usual Sunday, because September 27 is a national day of remembrance in Azerbaijan. 

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli said he was feeling "mad" at himself for the mistake which saw him crash his Mercedes and wreck his hopes during Friday's qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.The 20-year-old Italian, who missed most of Friday's practice sessions after suffering a hydraulics failure, blamed himself for making a mistake as track conditions changed and delivered unexpected extra grip.Antonelli clipped the wall on Turn 1 in Q1 and picked up a puncture, his first mistake since crashing in final practice in Australia.He wanted to continue but race engineer Pete Bonnington overruled him, telling him it was a "fairly big job" and to come into the pits."The grip was coming up very quickly, lap by lap," said Antonelli."Obviously, I turned in and then suddenly I had a lot more front end than the lap before and I touched the wall."It's a mistake from my side. Very unnecessary and I'm mad about it and we'll try to do better tomorrow."The car has been very strong all this weekend and George (Russell) has been doing incredibly well, but we'll try our best to recover as many places as possible."His Mercedes team-mate George Russell took pole position, the 12th of his career and fifth this year, by more than eight-tenths of a second ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to boost his faint hopes of reducing Antonelli's 81-point lead in the title race.Antonelli ended up qualifying 16th on the grid with many drivers forecasting that he will finish second behind Russell in the race.He vowed to overcome his poor grid position as he did at his home Italian Grand Prix where he won from 19th on the grid after taking power-unit penalties."Kimi is starting well down again," said Russell. "But he has shown that he can be at the back and end up on the top step a few times so... we'll see what we have to do." 

George Russell topped the times ahead of team-mate and world championship leader Kimi Antonelli as Mercedes dominated Thursday's second practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.The pair delivered a 1-2 as Russell completed a 'double top' ahead of Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen by eight-tenths of a second.Russell was fastest in one minute and 43.347 seconds to outpace his Italian partner by 0.552sec in a convincing display of speed on the fast and unforgiving barrier-lined streets of the Azeri capital.Charles Leclerc was fourth ahead of his Ferrari team-mate seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, with reigning world champion Lando Norris sixth for McLaren ahead of Alpine's Pierre Gasly and his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri."We are miles off," said Norris. "We're up there, let's say, we're in the position we expected to be in, but I'm 1.5 seconds off the pace. So, pretty pants."We'll see what work we can do tonight. The car didn't feel that bad so, yeah, it's a knife in the heart when you see how far off you are."Isack Hadjar was ninth in the second Red Bull, having returned to action after breaking his wrist. DRIVERS SURVIVE NARROW ESCAPESSeveral drivers survived narrow escapes from brushes with the barriers and walls, but the session was halted only once for a red flag when Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad crashed in the narrowest section of the circuit, but was unhurt.Russell and Verstappen set the early pace before Norris, his car using cable ties to retain the floor boards, went top only for the Dutchman to respond as the drivers settled into a groove of fast laps.After 15 minutes, Antonelli was still in the pits as his car was being rebuilt following an engine change after he suffered a hydraulics failure during FP1."I felt comfortable in the car, despite the disruption, and we focused on maximising every opportunity," said the 20-year-old."Losing laps in practice is not ideal, particularly on a street circuit like Baku where confidence builds with every lap and run."Hadjar was running with a fresh gearbox after struggling on his return to action.Verstappen, Leclerc and Russell clocked fastest lap times as Hamilton upset Lawson when he inadvertently baulked him. "Oh my God, that is so dangerous," he said. The stewards noted.But Russell emerged quickest, just as he did in the earlier opening practice, to complete a solid day's work for constructors' championship leaders Mercedes.Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are set to start at the back of the grid after taking significant grid penalties for exceeding their permitted number of engine component changes.They propped up the field in second practice, with Alonso only completing 11 laps as he finished last. 

Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli was fastest for Mercedes in free practice at Madrid's new Spanish Grand Prix circuit on Friday with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton close behind.Second in a first practice led by teammate George Russell, Antonelli then set the pace in a later session halted briefly by Racing Bulls' British rookie Arvid Lindblad becoming the first F1 driver to crash at the Madring and bring out red flags.Antonelli's best lap of one minute and 33.662 seconds was 0.113 quicker than Leclerc's fastest effort. Seven-times champion Hamilton was 0.149 off the pace with Lindblad fourth despite the crash ending his session with 24 minutes to go.The 19-year-old apologised after losing control of the rear of the car and smashing into the barriers sideways at Turn 13.Russell, Antonelli's closest title rival who led practice one with a time of 1:34.077, was fifth.Leclerc and Hamilton had been third and fourth in the first session at a bright and sunny Madring, a challenging track that runs around the IFEMA exhibition centre near the capital's Barajas airport.Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen was sixth with McLaren's Oscar Piastri seventh and Racing Bulls' stand-in Yuki Tsunoda eighth and Esteban Ocon ninth for Haas.New Zealander Liam Lawson, standing in for injured French driver Isack Hadjar for the third race in a row, was 10th for Red Bull in both sessions.McLaren's reigning world champion Lando Norris missed the second session as the team changed his car's gearbox.After a fiery crash halted the earlier F2 practice, the opening Formula One session took place without interruptions or major incident.Home hero Fernando Alonso brushed the wall in his Aston Martin and was 15th and 17th in the sessions respectively, while Spain's other driver Carlos Sainz was 17th and 16th for Williams in his home city, and there were complaints from several drivers over the radio about others getting in the way."That's just nasty," exclaimed Hulkenberg after Hamilton failed to let the German through at the final corner.Lindblad also called out Hamilton and Antonelli as "stupid" after accusing them of obstruction at the circuit's signature 'La Monumental' banked turn 12.
