Inglis, Carey put Australia on top against South Africa

* Australia one run ahead of South Africa in deciding test* Inglis, Renshaw, Green, Carey shine for touring side* Series level at 1-1   Josh Inglis scored an unbeaten 85 as Australia reached 330 for four at the close of the second day of the decisive third Test against hosts South Africa at Newlands on Wednesday.Australia are one run ahead of South Africa’s score of 329 and in control of the match as they eye a commanding first-innings lead.Inglis, who came into the side for the injured Steve Smith, shared an unbeaten 145 partnership with Alex Carey (51 not out) for the fifth wicket.South Africa toiled in the field as all Australian batters except Marnus Labuschagne (0) got in and scored runs.The Newlands wicket is traditionally best for batting on days two and three and so it proved as there was little seam or swing for the home side’s pace attack."We knew that they were going to come hard through periods, and it was just about building partnerships," opener Matt Renshaw, who scored 74, told reporters."It felt like a nice wicket. There's a few balls starting to spin, a few balls that popped."The guys that have applied themselves have scored runs. It's a rapid outfield, so that also helps the scoring rate a bit quicker."Renshaw and Travis Head (41) added 58 for the first wicket before spinner Simon Harmer (2-84) removed the latter with his first ball of the match.Head chopped the ball on to his stumps playing off the back foot, an all too familiar mode of dismissal for him in recent times.Labuschagne's poor run in Tests continued when he fell for a duck, caught by Aiden Markram at slip off Harmer.Renshaw and Cameron Green added 126 for the third wicket before they also fell in quick succession, this time to fast bowler Marco Jansen (2-37).Renshaw was caught by wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton and Green edged to Harmer at slip.Another substantial partnership from Inglis and Carey, however, means the momentum remains with Australia as South Africa failed to apply scoreboard pressure or create many wicket-taking opportunities.The series is level at 1-1 after Australia won the first Test by 214 runs in Durban and South Africa responded with a victory by an innings and 31 runs in Gqeberha.The team who win the match will occupy the number one position in the Test world rankings, which is currently held by Australia.

Australia dealt injury blow as Inglis returns home with finger fracture

Australia wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the final two one-day internationals against South Africa with a fracture to his right index finger, officials confirmed on Saturday.The 31-year-old injured his finger while keeping wicket in South Africa’s 67-run win in the first ODI played in Durban on Thursday.No replacement in the ODI squad has been named, with Alex Carey expected to don the gloves in the second fixture in the series in Johannesburg on Sunday. Inglis is now in a race to be fit for the three-match Test series in South Africa that starts on October 9.Cricket Australia confirmed Inglis would return to Perth for treatment, "with his availability for the three-match Test series subject to further assessment and progress".

Australia will take lessons from Zimbabwe win into World Cup, says Inglis

Australia's dramatic one-wicket victory over Zimbabwe on Sunday will give the squad confidence they can fight their way through difficult situations, which could prove vital at next year's one-day international (ODI) World Cup, Josh Inglis said.After their openers departed early, wicketkeeper-batter Inglis (103) scored his second ODI century to help Australia reach their target of 272 with one ball to spare, completing a 3-0 series whitewash."I think we're going to get in those situations again," said Inglis."For those guys to have done that today with a World Cup 12 months away, it will leave a good feeling with them, and they'll have a better idea of how to go about that situation again next time."Despite losing his wicket and needing teammate Nathan Ellis to steer the side over the finish line, Inglis said he was glad to find his rhythm after scores of 4 and 21 in the first two matches of the series."We just play a lot of Twenty20 cricket now, and it's just me finding the right tempo for one day cricket, and I sort of found that today," the 31-year-old added."Playing in a slightly different role with a younger team, I've probably got to take some more responsibility in batting at number four."I wasn't there right at the end, but to get there until the 40th over and get a hundred, I'm happy with it."Australia next face 2027 World Cup co-hosts South Africa in a three-match ODI series beginning on Thursday.

Inglis and Ellis shine to steer Australia to one wicket win over Zimbabwe

Josh Inglis scored his second One-Day International century and Nathan Ellis his highest score in the format with an unbeaten 36 from 44 balls as Australia claimed a dramatic one-wicket victory over hosts Zimbabwe with a ball to spare in Harare on Sunday.When Ellis was joined at the crease by number 11 Spencer Johnson (7 from 13 balls), the tourists needed 27 runs to reach their victory target of 272, something the pair managed at a run-a-ball to take their side to the win.Zimbabwe will rue Wessly Madhevere dropping Ellis in the penultimate over when he could have sealed victory for them, as he then failed to defend nine runs in the final over when Ellis hit a six off the first ball.Australia, who rested several of their regulars for the tour, claimed the series 3-0 and now move on to South Africa for three ODI fixtures that begin in Durban on Thursday."Great game of cricket," Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said. "I thought Zimbabwe probably deserved to win but the boys got the job done at the end there and that was fantastic to see."We're aware we need to keep improving as a team. I thought the way we played over the three matches, albeit today we got lucky, but there's lots of positive signs with our group. We've got some young talent which is exciting for the future." HOME SIDE ELECTED TO BAT FIRSTAfter the home side elected to bat first, Zimbabwe’s innings was anchored by an unbeaten 81 from 72 balls by captain Sikandar Raza, to go with half-centuries for Craig Ervine (59 from 79 balls) and Innocent Kaia (55 from 66 balls).Kaia retired hurt with a hamstring injury, with the score on 148 for three, as he could no longer run between the wickets.Seamer Ellis was also the pick of the Australian bowlers with 3-50 in his 10 overs.Australia were always up with the run rate in their reply but when openers Travis Head (6) and Marsh (8) fell early, it set the tone for an innings where they lost wickets at regular intervals.But Inglis scored a superb 103 from 102 balls as he struck 11 fours, with the next highest scorer Ellis on his unbeaten 36.Zimbabwe all-rounder Brad Evans was the pick of the home bowlers with 4-47 in 10 overs."I thought 280-290 was par with the bat so to make a game out of 272 was a great effort," Raza said. "As a captain I'm really proud. Plenty to learn. I'd rather have a game like that than for the Aussies to just chase it down in 40 overs." BRIEF SCORESAustralia 272 for 9 (Inglis 103, Evans 4-47) beat Zimbabwe 271 for 8 (Raza 81*, Ervine 59, Kaia 55 ret hurt, Ellis 3-50) by one wicket
