Lazio moved level on points with Inter Milan at the top of Serie A with a 3-1 win over Monza as pursuers Roma and AC Milan were both held.Ten-man Roma could not keep pace as Donyell Malen's red card overshadowed a 0-0 stalemate in Como to sit two points behind with leaders in third. AC Milan were held 1-1 at Sassuolo to leave them four points adrift of the leaders in fourth.Under Gennaro Gattuso, who has bounced back after his failure at the helm of the Italian national side who missed out on the 2026 World Cup, Lazio continued their strong start to the season.Still unbeaten, the Roman outfit secured a fifth victory in six matches to pull level on 16 points with Inter Milan, who beat Parma 3-0 at the San Siro on Saturday.Their run comes despite ongoing fan protests against owner Claudio Lotito that have left Lazio's home matches sparsely attended amid a stadium boycott.Nuno Tavares gave Lazio a third-minute lead and Gustav Isaksen doubled it midway through the first half. Monza had Lorenzo Lucchesi sent off on 35 minutes for hauling down Tijjani Noslin as he broke through on goal, but the 16th-placed visitors rattled Lazio after the break, pulling a goal back and coming close to equalising before conceding a third goal in the closing stages.Ruben Amorim's Milan maintained their unbeaten start but drew for the third time in their last four league games. Matteo Gabbia went off injured early on with the breakthrough not coming until the 63rd minute when Luka Modric slipped in Adrien Rabiot to fire home a powerful finish.Sassuolo responded immediately as Mike Maignan was forced into a double save, and the Rossoneri's lead lasted just five minutes before substitute Cas Odenthal turned in the equaliser in a crowded box from a corner.Roma continued their unbeaten start against Como but could only pick up a point in the first goalless draw of the Serie A season. The dismissal of league top scorer Malen for a dangerous tackle early in the second half forced Roma to scale back their ambitions after a bright start.Neither team could find the breakthrough in a clash between two sides widely regarded as dark horses for the title.Roma had the better of the first half as Lorenzo Pellegrini, making his first league start in six months, curled a shot off the post after Paulo Dybala's weak finish failed to trouble Jean Butez.But Malen's reckless lunge eight minutes into the second half proved costly as the Roma striker, who has scored six league goals this season, was shown a straight red card.Como were unable to find a way past Pierluigi Gollini as the Roma goalkeeper kept a clean sheet on his first league appearance for more than two years following an injury to first-choice Mile Svilar.Both sides are in Champions League action on Wednesday, when Roma host Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico and Como travel to Feyenoord. Bologna picked up their first win of the season by beating Lecce 2-1.

Lionel Messi headed a goal and provided an assist as Inter Miami won the Campeones Cup on Wednesday, beating Cruz Azul 2-0 in the annual clash between Major League Soccer and Mexican Liga MX champions. It was Inter Miami's first Campeones Cup triumph and came thanks to the Argentine superstar's 100th goal for the reigning MLS Cup winners. A late Messi corner was headed home by Casemiro to seal the win. Victory gave 39-year-old Messi his first trophy of the year, two months after the heartbreak of losing the 2026 World Cup final to Spain with Argentina.After the game, Casemiro paid tribute to his illustrious teammate Messi. "We have to enjoy this because we don't know how long we'll have it," the former Real Madrid midfielder said. "What he has done and continues to do for football is incredible... he remains the best. He proved it at the World Cup and continues to prove it in MLS."Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham said Messi deserved to win a record-extending ninth Ballon d'Or. "When you see him do things like this tonight, when you see him have the World Cup that he's had... there is no one at 39 that's doing that, and doing it at that level," said Beckham."So he deserves to be considered for the Ballon d'Or. In my opinion, he should win it." Cruz Azul had the game's first big chance, Jose Paradela's shot saved at the near post by Miami goalkeeper Dayne St Clair.Miami's opener came in the 24th minute. Though the goalscorer was no surprise, it was a rare Messi header that broke the deadlock.Luis Suarez crossed from the byline, and the 5-foot-7 Messi outjumped Willer Ditta with a diving header to give Miami the lead. Suarez nearly turned provider again in the 32nd minute. He received a sumptuous cross-field ball from Messi and scooped it up for German Berterame, whose dinked effort was cleared off the line.Early in the second half Messi appeared to have scored his 101st Miami goal, racing through one-on-one from a Suarez through ball and placing his shot in off the post, but was ruled offside.Cruz Azul should have equalized in the 67th minute, but substitute Gabriel Fernandez's glancing header hit the post, and Casemiro blocked the follow-up shot. A Messi corner gave Miami the two-goal cushion, finding Casemiro, who nodded the ball low to the far post in the 81st minute.St Clair denied Cruz Azul a late consolation, saving well from a Paradela free kick. - New coach -The trophy came in new Inter Miami head coach Cristian "Kily" Gonzalez's first game in charge.Argentine manager Gonzalez was appointed last month, but due to visa delays only took his first training sessions this week.The annual Campeones Cup pits the previous year's MLS Cup winner against the winner of Mexico's Campeon de Campeones.It was the eighth edition of the cup, which is always hosted by the MLS participant. Mexican teams had won the three most recent editions before Miami's victory on Wednesday.Mexican giants Cruz Azul have still never won the Campeones Cup. They lost the 2021 final.

Enzo Maresca said he was "very happy" on Saturday after his first game in charge of Manchester City, despite a defeat on penalties to Inter Milan after the sides drew 1-1 in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong on Saturday.Matteo Lavelli netted the decisive spot-kick for a 3-1 shootout win for the Italian champions as Maresca led out City for the first time since taking over from legendary Pep Guardiola in June."I'm very happy with the performance," the former Chelsea and Leicester boss told reporters."Many positive things, including minutes for the legs, that's very important."Like always, there are things we can do better, but slowly, slowly, we're going to improve."An open first half saw the Premier League side take the lead in the 14th minute when Antoine Semenyo jinked towards the byline and crossed for youngster Divin Mubama to tuck in from a few yards out.Semenyo was a constant menace and almost scored a wonderful solo goal soon afterwards when he weaved through several Inter defenders but could not squeeze the ball past goalkeeper Josep Martinez.Within minutes Inter equalised when City failed to clear a Jamal Iddrissou cross and the ball fell for Benjamin Pavard to slot home from near the penalty spot.Both sides missed golden chances soon after the restart but the game drifted as the substitutions piled up.City's Vitor Reis sliced a shot against the crossbar while young winger Ryan McAidoo hit the post as the Manchester club pushed for a late winner that never came."We were pressing in the wrong way, we conceded some switches of play... because we were late in the pressing," Maresca said of the first half performance."At half-time we adjusted something, and I think, second half, in terms of pressing, we were much, much better."Maresca took over in June and faces a tough task to succeed Guardiola, who won 20 trophies in a glorious decade at City.Many clubs have struggled after the exit of serial title-winning managers, with local rivals Manchester United notably falling from the pinnacle of the English game after Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.Nearly 43,000 fans converged on Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium for the match, though patches of unsold seats left the atmosphere subdued at times.Several of City's World Cup stars, including Norway striker Erling Haaland and Spain captain Rodri, have not travelled.Maresca has confirmed the pair will not join the squad in Seoul for the two remaining games on the club's Asia tour, against a K League all-star team and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid next week.City face Arsenal in the Community Shield against Arsenal on August 16 before starting the new Premier League season at home to Bournemouth a week later.Inter round off pre-season with a derby against AC Milan followed by another all-Italian clash with Juventus in Perth, Australia, before launching their Serie A title defence against Monza on August 22.

Napoli could concede the Serie A title to Inter Milan as soon as next week after falling to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Lazio. With five matches remaining in their respective league seasons the reigning champions trail Inter by 12 points following a poor display in Naples.Matteo Cancellieri's early tap-in set the tone at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, and Toma Basic made sure of a fine win for ninth-placed Lazio with another simple finish in the 57th minute.Lazio's performance was a good sign for their Italian Cup semi-final against Atalanta, which is delicately poised at 2-2 ahead of Wednesday's second leg in Bergamo. But it leaves Napoli counting the days until they officially concede the Scudetto, as if they fail to beat Cremonese and Inter win at Torino next weekend, the Scudetto will return north to Milan.Napoli could have even lost by more as in the 31st minute Vanja Milinkovic-Savic got his hands to an uncharacteristically poor penalty from Mattia Zaccagni, who then smashed over the rebound after slipping to the deck.That was the first time Zaccagni had failed to score from the penalty spot in Serie A but it made no difference to the final result. Napoli's title defence might effectively be over but Champions League qualification is still on the cards thanks to an eight-point lead on fifth-placed Como.Roma, in sixth, host Atalanta in the day's late match and can move to within six points of Napoli with a win. However Napoli have the better of the head-to-head record which decides the positions of teams who finish the season level on points.Roma also have problems of their own, with open conflict between coach Gian Piero Gasperini and Claudio Ranieri, who is a senior advisor to the Friedkin family, the capital club's billionaire American owners.Gasperini abandoned Friday's pre-match press conference on the verge of tears after speaking about Atalanta president Antonio Percassi, with whom Gasperini had a strong working relationship during his hugely successful nine years in Bergamo.Italian media have widely report one of Gasperini or Ranieri will be out the door come the end of the season, hardly the ideal backdrop as Roma head into a key clash against Gasperini's old club.Gasperini said his successes at Atalanta, which include winning the Europa League in 2024, were down to a "club which was in sync with the coach", a clear hint he didn't believe he has that at Roma.

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi bagged the 900th goal of his glittering career on Wednesday but could not prevent Inter Miami from crashing out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup on away goals after a 1-1 draw with Nashville. Messi, 38, scored his milestone goal after just seven minutes to put Miami 1-0 up in the second leg of their last-16 clash in the regional club competition. But Nashville’s Cristian Espinoza lashed in a 74th-minute equalizer to make it 1-1 on aggregate, and after holding Miami at bay for the remainder of the game, the visitors from Tennessee advanced to the quarter-finals on the away goals rule. Miami’s exit was a bittersweet ending to what had promised to be a night of celebration after Messi’s early opener in what was the club’s final game at their Chase Stadium home in Fort Lauderdale. Messi’s strike took the Argentine’s tally to 81 goals for the MLS champions following his move to Florida in 2023. The eight-time Ballon D’Or winner previously scored 672 goals for Spanish giants Barcelona, 32 for France’s Paris Saint-Germain, and a further 115 international goals for Argentina. Goal number 900 came some 21 years after Messi’s first goal in senior football, when he scored for Barcelona in a 2-0 win over Albacete in 2005 as a fresh-faced 17-year-old. Messi, widely regarded as the greatest player in football history, still has some way to go before he catches his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo, the 41-year-old Portuguese superstar who is on 965 career goals. Speaking ahead of Messi’s 900th goal, Miami manager and former Argentina and Barcelona team-mate Javier Mascherano described the star’s goals total as “insane.” “I’ve been lucky enough to see most, or many, of the goals he’s scored, much closer than you all, and that’s a privilege,” Mascherano said. “The number we’re talking about (900) is insane, and that’s why Leo is a one of a kind.” Wednesday’s match carried added significance for Inter Miami, marking a farewell to the team’s Chase Stadium. The venue has served as Inter Miami’s home since the club entered Major League Soccer in 2020. The team will move into a new purpose-built 26,700-seat facility next month. Messi is strongly expected to play in his sixth World Cup later this year, when Argentina defend their title in the 48-team tournament being staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Argentine star has already extended his Inter Miami contract through to the end of the 2028 season. Messi’s prolific goalscoring has been a hallmark of his career. His 672 goals for Barcelona came in just 778 games -- an average of 0.86 per game -- helping the Catalan club win 35 trophies before departure to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. In France, he scored 32 goals in 75 matches, winning three trophies including two league titles. In Miami, his 81 goals have come in just 96 appearances, helping the team win the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2025 MLS Cup. His 115 international goals have come in 196 matches, including two in the 2022 World Cup final victory over France. Messi’s goals tally leaves him second only to Ronaldo according to most recognised statistical records. Brazilian legend Pele is often said to have scored more than 1,000 goals but those numbers have been the subject to debate. Most statisticians put Pele’s total for Brazil, Santos and New York Cosmos at 762. 

A military court sentenced the former head of Pakistan's powerful Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency to 14 years in prison for violating state secrets and abusing his authority, the army said Thursday.Faiz Hameed, who served during the tenure of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, was also convicted of "engaging in political activities" and causing "wrongful loss to persons", the army's publicity wing said in a statement.Faiz Hameed, a lieutenant general who stepped down in December 2022, was detained in August 2024 after claims he raided the businesses of a real estate developer, according to Supreme Court documents published in 2023.The intelligence chief is considered the second most-powerful position in the Pakistani military."After lengthy and laborious legal proceedings, (the) accused has been found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment by the court," the statement said.It added that an accusation of "fomenting vested political agitation and instability in cohorts with political elements... is separately being dealt with".The statement did not give specific details of Faiz Hameed's purported crimes.Faiz Hameed was a staunch supporter of Khan, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote in 2022 after losing the backing of some top brass, experts say.Khan had openly challenged the military, the most powerful institution in Pakistan, which analysts say is behind the rise and fall of every civilian government.His arrest on corruption charges in May 2023 triggered nationwide protests that fuelled deep public resentment against the army.Once seen as a contender for the prestigious post of army chief, Faiz Hameed took early retirement a few months after Khan lost power.Faiz Hameed was later accused of "multiple instances" of violating the Pakistan Army Act and stripped of all rank."Violations of the Official Secrets Act, the illegitimate use of authority, misusing one's office to harm people, and getting involved in politics to spread chaos — these things were all proven," information minister Attaullah Tarar posted on X after the verdict.He said Faiz Hameed had also been illicitly "interfering with politics" by advising Khan's opposition Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI, party after his retirement.Khan has long accused the military of orchestrating his downfall, in particular Field Marshal Asim Munir, the army leader once dismissed by Khan who now is considered the most powerful man in the country."My wife and I have been imprisoned on fabricated charges at his command," Khan charged in social media post this month.That prompted a rare public rebuke by the army's spokesman, who called Khan a "delusional person" who had become a "national security threat". 

Al Sadd have appointed former Inter Milan and Italy boss Roberto Mancini as their new manager on a two-and-a-half-season deal, the Qatari club announced on Thursday. The 60-year-old Italian returns to management over a year after leaving his role with the Saudi Arabia national team. Mancini takes the reins at Al Sadd, who sit sixth in the Qatari top-flight with 14 points from nine matches, eight adrift of table-toppers Al-Gharafa. **media[381176]** His most successful spell as a manager came during his time with Inter. He led Inter to three Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia crowns and two Supercoppa Italiana triumphs during his first spell at the club between 2004-2008. Mancini was linked with the Nottingham Forest job before the Premier League club appointed Sean Dyche in October.

Argentine legend Lionel Messi has been awarded the Golden Boot as the top scorer in Major League Soccer (MLS), netting 29 goals this season in a standout campaign with Inter Miami. Messi secured the accolade following a sensational performance in his side's 5-2 win over Nashville, where he scored a hat-trick to close out the regular season in style.
