Tilak Varma struck a brutal half-century as India powered to a thrilling four-wicket win over New Zealand in the second T20 on Saturday for a 2-0 series lead.The tourists scored 68 runs from the last 4.5 overs in Christchurch to clinch victory with a ball to spare, having looked down and out when they were reduced to 70-5 in the 11th over, in pursuit of 181. Tilak carved 51 not out off 26 balls while Nitish Kumar Reddy struck the winning runs in an unbeaten 26 off 13 to hand India control of the five-match series.The result matched their four-wicket win in the opening match at the same Hagley Oval venue two days earlier, which was achieved with two balls to spare.Tilak said he never felt overwhelmed even as the required run rate grew. "It was going through my mind, that I wanted to take the game as deep as possible and I have done it, so I'm really proud of myself."Nitish Reddy and myself, we're really happy that we've finished the game," said Tilak, who devised a plan to see off New Zealand's accurate spinners before unleashing against their seam attack at the death. "There was definitely that intent. We wanted to push it into the gaps and run hard (against the spinners). They were really crucial, those runs."So we played smartly there and later on we know we can get success off the fast bowlers. We have finished off in style."New Zealand's bowling was led by captain Mitchell Santner, who took 4-21 through the middle stages as India's top order failed to match their dynamic batting from game one, when they chased down 225. Spinner Santner claimed the scalp of dangerous opener Abhishek Sharma for 27 in his first over and Naman Dhir for 31 in his fourth to have the tourists teetering at 112-6. However, Tilak in particular swung the bat brilliantly over the closing stages, finding the boundary four times in the penultimate over bowled by Nathan Smith.Santner lamented New Zealand's inability to close the door on the T20 world champions' deep batting lineup."You play a very good team, it's always going to be like that," Santner said. "I think if we got one more wicket there, it was really game over."The way they controlled that chase, they made us make some errors at the end."Tilak and Naman Dhir and obviously Reddy at the end really played pretty well." Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was dismissed for four, the 15-year-old batting sensation having been called into the side to replace the injured Ishan Kishan.New Zealand's Glenn Phillips scored his second straight half-century as the hosts recovered from 41-3 to post 180-5. Phillips struck four sixes in his 70 off 43 balls as he put on 116 in a fourth-wicket rearguard with Bevon Jacobs, whose 58 came off 46 balls.Seamer Arshdeep Singh was India's best bowler, taking 2-33 off four overs.Game three is in Wellington on Tuesday. 

Opener John Campbell hit 101 to lay the foundations for West Indies' highest-ever one-day international total of 405-7 against India in their second match on Wednesday. Skipper Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114) also struck centuries to boost the total as West Indies look to bounce back in the three-match series, led by India 1-0, in Guwahati.Invited to bat first, West Indies lost Keacy Carter for nine before Campbell and Hope put on 110 runs to set the tone for the batting domination. West Indies' previous ODI best was 389 against England in 2019, but they ended up losing the match. Campbell reached his second ODI hundred but in the next over fell to pace bowler Gurnoor Brar after the opener hit nine fours and five sixes in 68-ball knock.Hope and left-handed Jangoo put on 182 runs for the third wicket as the pair hammered the opposition attack with regular boundaries on a batting-friendly pitch.Hope, a wicketkeeper-batter, raised his 20th ODI ton to go past West Indies legend Brian Lara's 19 hundreds. Chris Gayle has the most ODI centuries for West Indies with 25 tons.Jangoo reached his second ODI hundred off 70 balls, leaping up and punching the air in delight. West Indies lost three quick wickets including Hope, Sherfane Rutherford -- out for a first-ball duck -- and then Jangoo, dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja.Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav struck twice to reach 200 ODI wickets before Roston Chase with his unbeaten 29 took West Indies past 400. India will need a record chase, one surpassing their ODI best of 362 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.

Ireland head coach Heinrich Malan will step down from his role, the country's cricket board said on Monday, shortly after the ‌Irish whitewashed India 2-0 in a ​Twenty20 series.The South African, ‌appointed in 2022, oversaw a period in ‌which ⁠Ireland qualified ‌for three consecutive T20 ‌World Cups, secured their first three Test match victories, ⁠and claimed their first-ever series win against India. Few gave Ireland a chance in the two-match series, but they humbled India twice in three days, spoiling Shreyas Iyer's debut series as India's 20-overs captain. It was India's first T20 ​series defeat since 2023.The 45-year-old's current contract extends into early 2027, but Cricket Ireland said in a statement, "he (Malan) believes ‌the timing is right ⁠in the ​cycle to step back following the just-concluded ​successful T20 series versus India."Malan will be replaced by Gary Wilson, who represented Ireland 292 times as a player between 2005 and 2020. Wilson joined Ireland's coaching setup as assistant coach in 2022, and becomes the first Irish-born head coach in over 30 years, following John Wills in the early 1990s."It has been ‌an absolute privilege to ‌work with these players, ⁠staff and the wider Irish cricket community," Malan ⁠said in a ⁠statement. "On the field, we can look back with great pride," he added, pointing to a T20 World Cup victory against England, Ireland's first-ever Test victory against Afghanistan and a first home Test win vs ​Zimbabwe among the highlights. Malan will work alongside Wilson over the coming month to ensure a smooth transition as Ireland prepare for a one-day international series against Afghanistan in August.Cricket Ireland also said that the transition will allow Wilson to use the upcoming ODI series as part of the preparations ‌towards the World ​Cup qualifiers early in 2027.
