Afghanistan replaced Rashid Khan with Ibrahim Zadran as skipper Thursday for the T20I series against Sri Lanka but are still monitoring the situation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to stage the matches. Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said Zadran’s appointment is in alignment for future build-up. “In alignment with the ACB’s long-term strategic vision and following recent changes in our team management, we have made the thoughtful decision to appoint Zadran as new T20I skipper,” ACB said in a statement. Hashmatullah Shahidi will continue to lead the team in the ODI series which follows the T20Is. The series begins with three Twenty20 internationals in Sharjah on March 13, 15 and 17 before the ODIs are played in Dubai on March 20, 22 and 25. Afghanistan crashed out in the first round of the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka after losing to South Africa and New Zealand. As a fall out, fast bowler Fazal Haq Farooqi, all-rounder Gulbadin Naib, and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Ishaq have been left out from both the squads, the release said. Afghanistan’s head coach Jonathan Trott also left the post after completing his tenure with another Englishman Richard Pybus taking over. ACB said it was constantly monitoring the situation in the UAE before making a final decision. “We are closely monitoring the ongoing situation in the region and a final decision will be made in a couple of days,” ACB said. “Should circumstances necessitate a change, the ACB will consider exploring alternative options for both the host country and the event schedule.” T20I Squad: Ibrahim Zadran (captain), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Noor Rahman, Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Shahidullah Kamal, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Abdullah Ahmadzai ODI Squad: Hashmatullah Shahidi (captain), Rahmat Shah, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ikram Alikhil, Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Nangyal Kharoti, AM Ghazanfar, Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Bilal Sami 

Opener Ibrahim Zadran struck an unbeaten 95 to help Afghanistan to a crushing 82-run win over Canada Thursday and cap off an otherwise disappointing T20 World Cup on a high.Zadran hit seven fours and five sixes in his 56-ball knock to steer Afghanistan to 200-4 after being invited to bat first in Chennai.Afghanistan bowlers led by veteran spinner Mohammad Nabi, with his T20 best figures of 4-7, kept Canada down to 118-8 for their second win in the 20-team tournament.2024 semi-finalists Afghanistan failed to reach the Super Eights stage after New Zealand secured the other qualification spot from Group D, which was topped by South Africa."We were well prepared for this competition, we were very close," said Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan."The game against South Africa (lost in a double super over) put us on the back foot and that hurt us."The Afghans put up a dominant show in their last group match with Zadran leading the batting with his half-century and a 95-run third-wicket stand with Sediqullah Atal, who made 44.It was the last match for former England batter Jonathan Trott as coach of Afghanistan after he took over the job in July 2022.Canada were never in the chase and ended the tournament without a win in four matches. BRIEF SCORES: Afghanistan 200 for 4 (Zadran 95*, Atal 44, Jaskaran 3-52) beat Canada 118 for 8 (Thaker 30, Nabi 4-7) by 82 runs. 

Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by 18 runs in a T20 international, thanks to half-centuries from Sediqullah Atal and Ibrahim Zadran. Atal scored 64 and Zadran added 65, guiding Afghanistan to a total of 169 for five. Pakistan’s Faheem Ashraf was the top bowler, taking four wickets for 27 runs. In their chase, Pakistan were held to 151 for nine. Despite a late surge from Haris Rauf, who hit 34 not out, steady bowling from Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad both taking two wickets ensured Afghanistan’s victory. Pakistan, who won both their matches in the tri-series, have now lost one match. Rashid Khan, Afghanistan captain, said Tuesday: “If you bowl in the right areas and with the bowling we have, it (169) was manageable and defendable.” When asked if it was a tactic playing different spinners each game, Khan said: “That is a kind of tactic. We have that bench strength. It is not just about the playing eleven. Whoever gets the opportunity can do the job. We decide based on the opposition and who might be useful on that wicket. We thought Noor and Ghazanfar would be more effective. “Quite pleased with the way they bowled and the lengths they bowled. Atal and Zadran are two great players, just the beginning for them. The way they are taking responsibility and reading conditions, they are doing it so well. They understand if we can keep wickets, we can score maximum runs.” Salman Agha, Pakistan captain, said: “I think 170 was gettable. Thought the bowlers did a good job. We lost too many wickets in the middle overs. After eight overs, we were going well but we lost many wickets (in the next 5-6 overs).
