World championship leader Kimi Antonelli said he was proud of his and Mercedes' damage limitation efforts on Sunday after he finished third to extend his advantage in the Hungarian Grand Prix.The 19-year-old Italian battled for a podium finish having been hit with a grid penalty to seventh place after a yellow flag infringement in qualifying."I think it's a good result," he said. "It was damage limitation after yesterday and we really had to fight for it because this weekend we struggled a little bit overall, but also other teams, like Ferrari and McLaren, brought upgrades so it was kind of expected.Antonelli has six wins this season and extended his championship lead over seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari by five points to 50 and to 59 ahead of his teammate George Russell."Hopefully it is going to be our turn, in the second half of the season to bring some upgrades."Antonelli had started seventh and worked his way forward in a complex race of mixed tyre strategies to finish behind world champion Lando Norris of McLaren and four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull. 'GOOD TEAM EFFORT'"It was a really good team effort," he said. "And this half of the season we have done a tremendous job."Looking ahead to the second half, he added: "It's going to be tight. McLaren did a massive step forward, Ferrari are quick and you can never write off Max -- so it is going to be a big fight."And George is going to be back in shape for sure. We just need to raise the bar and come back stronger because it is going to be a big push."Russell said his "terrible start" was beyond his control, just another setback to add to the list of things that had gone against him this year."Right now, we don't know what happened, but it's added to the list of the things that have happened in the first half of this season."I just pray things calm down in the second half. Honestly, I'm staying positive because I've gone through being so disappointed with everything that's happened."At some point, you've got to pick yourself up and accept there's things that aren't in your control that may work against you."I'm not happy with how things have gone, but I'm just going keep on staying positive and keep on pushing."Team boss Toto Wolff conceded that "once again, we did a mistake on screwing George's start. It is just not acceptable and not good enough from us."Russell recovered from a poor start, when he was halted by anti-stall software that dropped him to 20th, by finishing seventh 

Lewis Hamilton said he remained optimistic about his hopes of winning a record eighth drivers world championship this year despite collecting another penalty in Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.The seven-time champion Ferrari driver, who finished classified fifth having finished fourth on the road before taking a five-second penalty, said he had to "work hard not to give the stewards any more opportunities to give me penalties".He was adjudged to have exceeded the pit lane speed limit by 0.1 kph during a stop that he said, after the race, was unnecessary and a mistake by the team."I definitely don't think we should have taken the last stop," he said, referring to Ferrari's decision to call him in during a late Virtual Safety Car intervention to swap from hard tyres to softs for the final laps."The call came just before the pit entry and I didn't have time to debate it. You've got to trust the decision that's been taken, but in hindsight my tyres were totally fine."I probably would have lost out to Max (Verstappen, who finished second), but I think I could have kept third at least. It just opened the door to getting that penalty at the end."Asked if he was upbeat for the second half of the season, as he seeks to close a 50-point deficit behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, Hamilton was positive."I definitely am," he said. "I'm massively grateful to the team because they've done a really great job in the first half."I think the last three races from me have not been great, with lots of mistakes. I've had a lot of penalties... I've got to work hard hard not to give them any more opportunities for penalties." 

Max Verstappen continued to complain about his car and put pressure on his Red Bull team on Sunday despite securing his second consecutive podium finish and a third in four races.The four-time champion came in second behind McLaren's world champion Lando Norris in the Hungarian Grand Prix while grumbling about his car's gearbox and aerodynamic performance.He had earlier described the car as "undriveable" a comment repeated by team-mate Isack Hadjar who finished sixth."I didn't expect to be on the podium today, but we worked hard for it," said Verstappen. "The start was decent, you know, to get through turns one and two, and then after the first stop to get back ahead of Lewis, under braking into Turn One."Then, I was just trying to survive on the compounds, trying to make the right calls with the strategy as well. So, yes, I've very happy, considering everything, to be second here." MOVE OF THE RACEHe added that his lunge to pass Lewis Hamilton - the move of the race - was his chance to regain the position he had lost when Ferrari pitted the Briton to create an undercut."I saw that opportunity as my only one and so I just went for it. We were good on the brakes so that helped! But, it was all under control."He was enigmatic about the quality of his car on Sunday after criticising it severely on Saturday when, after spinning in qualifying, he said it was "a big problem.""The weekend in general has been difficult, but when instead of the tyres degrading your car is degrading, then you have a big problem.""The car just kept getting worse and worse, lap after lap. So the more laps I did, it was just more and more difficult. We have to fix it because the car is undriveable like this."The team had abandoned an experimental 'Macarena' rear wing at the Belgian Grand Prix a week earlier when Verstappen described it as "super-dangerous" after crashes in Austria and Britain.His descriptions of the car during Sunday's race were laced with profanities.  

World champion Lando Norris claimed his first win of the season and 12th of his career with a resounding triumph for McLaren ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen in Sunday's helter-skelter Hungarian Grand Prix.The 26-year-old Briton, who started from pole position but had to recover after a poor opening lap, came home 15 seconds clear of four-time world champion Verstappen with world championship leader Kimi Antonelli finishing third for Mercedes.The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton ended up fourth and fifth ahead of Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull, George Russell in the second Mercedes and Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson.Nico Huelkenberg scored his first points of the season in ninth place for Audi ahead of rookie Arvid Lindblad in the second Racing Bulls. Norris repeated his success last season at the Hungaroring where McLaren have won for the last three years.Antonelli's determined drive, in a frantic race of divergent tyre strategies, lifted him 50 points clear of Hamilton in the championship."Beautiful," said Norris on team radio. "The car was unbelievable today! Flying!"It's probably the best pace I've ever had," he said "This track is good for us."Verstappen was critical of his car, but happy to claim another podium finish. "I didn't expect it today - we had to work very hard for this," he said.Antonelli said it had been a hard race. "It was so tough to overtake, but it is the best result for me to go into the break and now we can keep pushing."The race began in scorching heat with the highest temperatures of the weekend - 31 Celsius (air) and 51 (track).Ferrari gambling on soft tyres for the start while all the started on mediums.Oscar Piastri made a fast start to pass Leclerc. When Norris went wide at Turn Two and Piastri took the lead while Hamilton passed Leclerc for fourth behind Verstappen.Behind them, the luckless Russell's Mercedes went into anti-stall on the grid. He fell from from sixth to 20th while team-mate Antonelli advanced to sixth.Hamilton attacked Verstappen without success and by lap 10 was losing grip."Max is slow," reported Hamilton, who pitted to 'undercut' Verstappen on lap 14, rejoined 10th and stormed past Lindblad before Red Bull brought the Dutchman in on lap 15.Verstappen came out behind Hamilton, but regained his place with a lunge down the inside at Turn One.Piastri pitted from the lead, followed by Leclerc. It was frantic stuff and when Norris came in, Antonelli took over as leader.When the the Italian pitted, he returned in sixth. Piastri led folowed by team-mate Norris. The Briton requested a stop but McLaren brought in Paistri first.At halfway, Norris led Verstappen by five seconds.The Briton then pitted from the lead on lap 40 and returned in third, ahead of Piastri, the Australian having narrowly avoided a heavy collision with Carlos Sainz's Williams at Turn Two where they clashed. Sainz was given a five-seconds penalty.After Verstappen pitted again, Antonelli led with Norris in pursuit.Norris, on fresher tyres, regained the lead on lap 46 with a dive inside the young Italian at Turn One and built his advantage before Antonelli stopped again.Hopes of a McLaren 1-2 ended when Piastri slowed and retired with gearbox problems and a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was deployed. Norris, Hamilton and Leclerc pitted for softs immediately.In a final flurry, Norris led Verstappen with Antonelli third, fending off Hamilton - penalised five seconds for speeding in the pit lane.

Formula One world champion Lando Norris ‌put McLaren on pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday to ​end Mercedes' qualifying domination.Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, ‌chasing his first pole since Hungary 2023, missed out by a mere ‌0.012 seconds and was ⁠then demoted three places ‌by stewards for impeding Norris's teammate Oscar ‌Piastri.That lifted Ferrari's Charles Leclerc from third to the front row, with Mercedes Formula One leader ⁠Kimi Antonelli provisionally taking his place.It was the first time this season, in the 11th round, that Mercedes had not secured pole for a grand prix.MCLAREN BENEFIT FROM CAR UPGRADES"Very happy to be back on top," said Norris, last year's winner in Hungary who now has a strong chance of repeating the feat at a circuit where overtaking is expected to be tricky with the new era of engines."It's been tight the whole weekend but we seemed ​quick from the first laps we did and we brought a few upgrades. I'm in the best position for the start. But these guys (Ferrari) get good starts and have been fast all season."Leclerc, who won at ‌Silverstone and was second in Belgium ⁠last weekend, will be ​the immediate threat to Norris, with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader with ​six wins and 45 points clear of closest rival Hamilton, right behind. Hamilton, chasing a record-stretching 10th pole at a circuit where he has also won eight times, was fastest after the first runs but was unable to make that stick.He was then summoned by stewards, with the conversation turning to damage limitation."I didn't know he was coming," he said of Piastri. "I thought everyone had finished their lap. It wasn't intentional."Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur said it was the team's mistake, with Hamilton not receiving the radio message in time.Piastri moved up from fifth to the second row, with Hamilton on the third row along with ‌Red Bull's four-times world champion Max ‌Verstappen.Verstappen spun at the end, forcing ⁠Antonelli and teammate George Russell to slow.Stewards also summoned Antonelli for possible speeding while yellow flags were ⁠being waved for Verstappen's incident."The yellow ⁠flag came while I was entering the corner so I tried my best to lift. I did lift but gave up quite a bit of minimum speed compared to before. It was a shame," said the 19-year-old Italian. ANOTHER BLOW FOR RUSSELLRussell qualified seventh for Mercedes, another blow to his chances of closing the gap on Antonelli in the last race before the August break, with car gremlins ​resurfacing after he rode over a kerb and stopped."We lost water pressure and I had a water leak. When I stopped on track, the car was leaking a load of water. We don't know where it's come from. Fingers crossed it doesn't affect anything for tomorrow," he said.Red Bull's Isack Hadjar qualified eighth with rookie Arvid Lindblad ninth for Racing Bulls and Nico Hulkenberg completing the top 10 for Audi. Struggling Aston Martin made a minor breakthrough with Fernando Alonso, four days short of his 45th birthday, making the second phase of qualifying for the first time this ‌season in the team's ​upgraded chassis.The Spaniard will start 16th with teammate Lance Stroll 20th but at least ahead of both Cadillacs. 

* Hamilton sets best lap time at 1:18.729 around the Hungaroring* Leclerc 0.148 slower in second session, with Norris third* F1 leader Antonelli sat out first practice as reserve Vesti took his seatLewis Hamilton led Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari one-two at the top of the Hungarian Grand Prix practice timesheets on Friday.Hamilton, a record eight-times winner at the Hungaroring who has now had turn two of the circuit named after him, lapped with a best time of one minute 18.729 in the day's second afternoon session.A ninth win at the circuit for the Briton would equal his own Formula One record for wins at the same track, nine at Silverstone. He will also be chasing his 10th Hungarian pole in Saturday's qualifying.Leclerc, top in first practice when he was nearly half a second quicker than anyone else with a time of 1:19.075 before something broke on his car, was second fastest and 0.148 slower. McLaren's reigning champion and last year's winner Lando Norris was third, 0.499 off the pace.RUSSELL FIFTH IN BOTH AS ANTONELLI STRUGGLESRed Bull's Max Verstappen was fourth fastest, after being second in the earlier session when Hamilton was third.George Russell was the best of the Mercedes drivers, fifth in both sessions but nearly a second slower than Hamilton, with championship-leading teammate Kimi Antonelli 13th after missing the first session while Danish reserve Frederik Vesti gained track time."I almost spun twice on braking," said the 19-year-old Italian over the Mercedes team radio. "What is going on? I keep locking the rears."Russell had echoed his teammate, complaining: "The car feels dreadful. It's so out of balance."Hamilton had been unhappy with his car's handling in the first session, saying over the radio that it felt "pretty bad. Ride is very poor. The stiffness is too stiff."That all changed later on, with the seven-times world champion going top 15 minutes before the chequered flag.Antonelli leads Hamilton by 45 points in the championship after 10 rounds. FIRST SESSION BRIEFLY HALTED The first session was briefly halted after Lance Stroll spun off in the upgraded Aston Martin and the Canadian did not return for the second as the team worked on his car's rear left suspension.Teammate Fernando Alonso was 13th and 19th, his later best time 2.990 slower than Hamilton's lap and the jury still out on the major changes to the car.Alpine's Franco Colapinto crashed without injury at the final corner halfway through the second session, bringing out red flags.Despite Ferrari's strong start to the weekend, after winning two of the previous four races, Leclerc and Hamilton had both held up Mercedes as clear favourites even if the track looked better suited to Ferrari's car than recent ones."I still personally expect Mercedes to be the reference and they are going to be very difficult to beat on the qualifying lap," said Leclerc.
