Qatar’s secured qualification for the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship 2026 after defeating Oman 80-67 in the fourth round of the Gulf Qualifiers at Al Gharafa Sports Hall on Wednesday. The victory marked Qatar's third consecutive win in the qualifying tournament, taking the hosts to six points and guaranteeing one of the two available Gulf qualification spots for the continental championship, scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad, India, from August 13-23. Bahrain also confirmed qualification after matching Qatar’s perfect record of three wins from three matches. The two unbeaten sides will now meet in the final qualifier to decide the Gulf champions and top spot in the standings. Qatar continued its impressive campaign with another composed performance despite a competitive challenge from Oman. After trailing 19-18 at the end of the opening quarter, the hosts responded by taking the second period 23-20 before Oman edged ahead in the third quarter 14-9. Qatar, however, dominated the final quarter 30-14 to pull away and secure a comfortable 13-point victory. Abdullah Yassin delivered a standout display for Qatar, finishing with a game-high 38 points, while Adam Suleiman led Oman with 17 points. The victory completed a flawless run for Qatar in the qualifiers. The hosts opened their campaign with an 80-76 win over Saudi Arabia before producing an emphatic 81-53 victory against Kuwait in the second round. The win over Oman sealed qualification and highlighted the team's growing confidence ahead of the continental championship. In the day's other fixture, Saudi Arabia earned their first win of the tournament with a convincing 75-46 victory over Kuwait. Saudi Arabia raced to a 21-5 first-quarter lead, shared the second period 13-13, lost the third 19-14, and finished strongly with a 27-9 final quarter. Saudi Arabia had previously suffered defeats to Bahrain (62-54) and Qatar (80-76), while Kuwait remain without a victory after losses to Oman (62-59), Bahrain (106-51), Qatar (81-53), and Saudi Arabia. Following four rounds, Qatar and Bahrain sit jointly atop the standings with six points each and have both secured qualification for the Asia championship. Saudi Arabia and Oman are tied on four points, while Kuwait remain at the bottom after four consecutive defeats. 

A "proud" Canada became the first of the co-hosts to exit the World Cup as a clinical Morocco won 3-0 to reach the quarter-finals on Saturday in Houston.The 2022 semi-finalists Morocco will face title favourites France or Paraguay as the business end of the tournament in North America approaches.After a first half littered with more bookings than shots and with Canada on top, midfielder Azzedine Ounahi fired the opener on 50 minutes.Canada - playing the biggest game in their footballing history - pushed for an equaliser, but Ounahi scored his second to finally see off the resistance of Jesse Marsch's men.Substitute Soufiane Rahimi slipped in the third with the last kick of the match."It's a World Cup match and these are difficult games with teams playing for their lives," said Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi."We reacted very well in the second half in the second balls and the duels. I have to recognise that Canada were impressive, they played a top match."It was no surprise for us, but in the second half we were able to profit from the space they left us, that was the key."The scoreline was tough on Canada, who were the better side until the opening goal in front of a crowd of 68,777 as they sought to extend what was already a historic run.Marsch said: "What a privilege our fans have had to root on a team like this - that goes after the game, does not play defensive."We have to be in these situations more and more and find ways to succeed, and we have to build from that."As good as Morocco are, I'd rather be us. I'm really proud of our guys. We went after the game and they are really hurting right now, but I couldn't be prouder."Canada came into the contest in uncharted territory, having won a World Cup match and then a knockout game for the first time to get to the last 16.They were clear underdogs and their fans were outnumbered by Morocco supporters at the air-conditioned Houston Stadium. Canada start strongYet they looked the more confident at the start, Tani Oluwaseyi turning sharply in the box and forcing Morocco's Montreal-born goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to save with a stretched-out leg after 10 minutes.From Canada's fourth corner of the half, defender Alistair Johnston failed to make the most of a free header. Morocco were rattled.After 20 minutes Ouahbi's team suffered a big injury blow, Bayern Munich-bound Ismael Saibari - who had scored three times at the tournament - coming off for Rahimi.Immediately after the drinks break Rahimi had an optimistic attempt from distance, registering Morocco's first shot on target with a quarter of the game gone.There was a flashpoint shortly before half-time when Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi and defender Richie Laryea had a brief shoving match, with both shown yellow cards.Referee Michael Oliver booked six players - four from Morocco -- in a half high on niggly fouls and low on goalmouth action.The build-up to the last World Cup game of seven in Houston, with the United States celebrating its 250th birthday, was the highlight until that point.Morocco, who beat Canada in the group phase at the 2022 World Cup, came out for the second period transformed. Five minutes after the restart Hakimi pinged a low free-kick to Ounahi unmarked outside the box and he swept in first time.Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau had his view blocked by two of his defenders and the ball also went through Rahimi's legs.On 82 minutes, Ounahi was the man in the right place again on the breakaway with another right-footed first-time finish, before Rahimi pounced in the 98th minute.  

Ten-man United States moved into the last 16 at the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia on Wednesday, ending a 24-year wait for a knockout-stage ⁠win to keep alive hopes of an American dream run in soccer's global showpiece.In a dramatic high-tempo game in the San Francisco Bay ⁠Area, Folarin Balogun scored near halftime then was sent off after the break, with Malik Tillman converting a free kick late on to spark euphoria in a partisan arena of red, white and blue.Victory brought an end to a dismal U.S. run of 10 consecutive defeats by European opposition, and set up a last-16 tie in Seattle with Belgium, who had earlier rallied from two goals down to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time."I felt we put on such a good performance and didn't deserve the red card," said Christian Pulisic."But for us to dig in deep like that and just to get another ⁠goal and to defend the way we did, it took a real team effort, but we're proud of that."It was a physical encounter in the Golden State where luck was not always on the side of the hosts, with Balogun and Pulisic having goals ruled out and Bosnia crowding out their defence to stifle a succession of U.S. attacks.Balogun was always a threat, coming close a few times early on before seizing his chance, slotting home a loose ball to put the hosts ahead for his third goal of the tournament.He was stunned when he was dismissed after the break for a serious foul on Tarik Muharemovic that appeared accidental. PATRIOTIC FERVOURPlaying in their first-ever World Cup knockout ⁠round match, Bosnia had barely threatened and looked content defending compactly and hoofing long ⁠balls upfield towards Edin Dzeko, who ⁠forced a save early on from goalkeeper Matt Freese.In a match full of patriotic fervour that got under way with a flyover by fighter jets, the Americans started with attacking verve and silky one-touch moves, spurred on by the reverberating roars of U-S-A by a crowd with high expectations.And the U.S. delivered, showing speed, grit and intensity, with talisman Pulisic back in the team and intoxicating the crowd with a few blazing runs for goal.U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino was certain Balogun's foul was not intentional and hailed his team's ability to battle on."The team showed the qualities, the capacity to compete, to fight for each other," he said. "Yes, I am so proud, so proud about the players. They are the heroes."Bosnia's coach Sergej Barbarez was disappointed they did not create more chances but praised his players for getting this far in the tournament."We should hold our heads up high and we can really improve and build on this," he said.
