Super subs Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas fired Switzerland to a 4-1 win over 10-man Bosnia-Herzegovina in a late rush of goals in Los Angeles on Thursday.The result gave the Swiss a strong chance of reaching the knockout round as one of the top two teams in Group B. They had been controlling a largely tepid stalemate at the SoFi Stadium until coach Murat Yakin rang the changes in the 72nd minute, bringing on the pair of forwards who immediately transformed the game.Bosnia's attempted clearance from a Vargas cross felt to Manzambi who volleyed home with his first touch of the game, before Manzambi turned creator for a Vargas finish. In between those goals, Bosnia had Tarik Muharemovic sent off for a desperate sliding tackle on Breel Embolo, who was clear through on goal.The afternoon got worse for Bosnia as Vargas then assisted another finish for 20-year-old Freiburg star Manzambi. Ermin Mamhic pulled back a spectacular consolation from a corner, but a Granit Xhaka penalty in stoppage time sealed the rout.Switzerland go top of Group B on four points, three clear of the other teams, with Canada and Qatar playing later. With their country playing in only its second World Cup, Bosnian fans turned out in huge numbers.A sea of blue swept into the impressive stadium and drowned out the Swiss support, with the exception of one man dressed as a cow, who defiantly rattled his oversized cowbell. The Swiss had the better of the early exchanges.Veteran midfielders Xhaka and Remo Freuler orchestrated forays down the left flank to Dan Ndoye, which fizzled out with poor crosses and lackluster finishing. Having started very deep, the Bosnians slowly grew into the half.Forty-year-old star Edin Dzeko created their first big chance in the 32nd minute, cleverly switching play across the six-yard box to Benjamin Tahirovic, who failed to connect at the far post.Ndoye nearly gave Switzerland a spectacular lead after the break, smashing a bicycle kick from Xhaka's cross toward Nikola Vasilj, who did well to palm it over the bar.An increasingly frustrated Dzeko earned a booking for bulldozing Manuel Akanji, and was substituted. Yakin made three changes in the 72nd minute, and two minutes later, two of those subsitutes combined to finally put his side ahead.Vargas ran up the left wing, his first cross bounced back to him, and on his second attempt, Amar Memic's attempted headed clearance fell to Manzambi, who volleyed home. Muharemovic was dismissed in the 79th minute for a sliding tackle from behind on Embolo.The floodgates then opened. In the 84th minute Manzambi, coming in from the right, found Embolo who played it to an open Vargas to slot home. Six minutes later, Vargas cut back to Manzambi, who guided the ball across the 'keeper.Three minutes into stoppage time, Gregor Kobel slapped a corner out to Bosnian substitute Mamhic, who rifled his shot home. But the Bosnian backline had lost their heads, and a desperate foul by Amar Memic gave Swiss captain Xhaka the chance to bury his penalty. 

Co-hosts Canada grabbed a second-half equaliser to draw 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday in the first World Cup finals game ever played on Canadian soil.Cyle Larin got Canada's goal after Jovo Lukic put Bosnia ahead with a header in the 21st minute in Toronto. The result gave Canada its first point in World Cup history.Canadian sides had a perfect record of futility at two previous tournament appearances in 1986 and 2022, with six losses. Lukic's goal from a corner sent the small but enthusiastic Bosnian contingent at the Toronto Stadium into a frenzy.Canada had the majority of play in the first half but failed to generate any real chances. The stadium erupted in the 17th minute when forward Jonathan David had a clear shot on goal, but it was easily handled by Bosnian keeper Nikola Vasilj.Canada's Ismael Kone had a golden opportunity in the 30th minute, but sailed his strike well over the net, prompting groans from tens of thousands of Canadians who blanketed the stadium in a sea of red.The second half began in similar fashion, with Canada largely on the attack, but unable to find the net. Bosnia's veteran defender Sead Kolasinac saved a certain goal when he diverted a strike from David onto the crossbar, extending Canada's agony.But Larin's strike in the 78th minute marked a high point in Canada's limited World Cup history, causing a mostly Canadian crowd of 43,000 to erupt.Canada threatened to go ahead in the final minutes, narrowly missing a goal near the final whistle. Canadian entertainment royalty attended the match at the home of the MLS's Toronto FC, including film star Ryan Reynolds, from Vancouver, and Saturday Night Live and Austin Powers star Mike Myers, a Toronto native. 

Qatar football coach Julen Lopetegui Tuesday named a 34-player preliminary squad for the FIFA World Cup to be held from June 11 to July 19.Qatar, the two-time Asian champions, will play World Cup matches against Switzerland in San Francisco on June 13, followed by games against Canada in Vancouver on June 18 and a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on June 24.The large squad that Lopetegui approved Tuesday includes the core team members who featured in their two AFC Asian Cup title wins in 2019 and 2024. Feared striker Akram Afif will be joined by veteran midfielder and captain Hasan al-Haydos, forward Moez Ali and Bassam Al Rawi. Experienced defender Pedro Miguel is also in the squad along with Mohammed Muntari who scored Qatar’s only goal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.In a surprise inclusion, veteran forward Sebastian Soria has also been named in the 34-member squad. The 42-year-old striker first appeared for Qatar at the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha. Overall, Soria has played 124 international matches for Qatar, scoring 39 goals.Meshaal Barsham - younger brother of track and field icon Mutaz Barsham - will be key to Qatar’s World Cup plans this summer. Meshaal was the Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the AFC Asian Cup which Qatar won on home soil in Feb 2024.A QFA official confirmed on Monday during the QFA Awards ceremony that the Qatar squad will train behind closed doors starting May 15 before flying out for the World Cup.  During Qatar’s training camp, two friendly matches will be played aimed at fine-tuning preparations ahead of the tournament. Qatar will face Republic of Ireland at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on May 28 before taking on El Salvador in Los Angeles on June 6. The 2026 tournament will be the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 teams and to be jointly hosted by three countries - the United States, Canada and Mexico.FIFA’s updated guidelines for the 2026 World Cup allow nations to name an initial longlist of up to 55 players, offering coaches ample room to evaluate their options before the final cut.From that pool, teams must submit a final roster of 23 to 26 players, a range that mirrors the 2022 Qatar format, which must include at least three goalkeepers.Fans and analysts can mark their calendars for June 2, the anticipated deadline for the official squad reveals. The squad: Meshaal Barsham, Mahmoud Abu Nada, Salah Zakaria, Shehab Al Laithi, Ahmed Al Janahi, Ahmed Alaa, Ahmed Fathi, Tarek Salman, Edmilson Junior, Ayoub Al Lawati, Sultan Al Brake, Al Hashmi Al Hussein, Boualem Khoukhi, Bassam Al Rawi, Jassim Jaber, Nail Mason, Sebastian Soria, Ryan Al Ali, Assim Madibo, Abdulaziz Hatem, Issa Laay, Mohammed Manai, Karim Boudiaf, Lucas Mendes, Tahseen Mohammed, Mubarak Shanan, Homam Al Amin, Youssef Abdurisag, Mohammed Muntari, Mohammed Waad, Hassan Al Haydos, Akram Afif, Almoez Ali and Pedro Miguel.
