Arsenal ride out Liverpool storm to top Premier League

Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League with their first win away to Liverpool in 14 years as Kai Havertz's early strike secured a 1-0 victory for the Gunners.The defending champions were made to suffer after the German's 16th-minute opener but held out for what could be a telling win in their quest to retain the title. Arsenal climbed three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.But with City expected to be hit with a severe points penalty, unless they can overturn a guilty verdict on over 100 charges of breaking Premier League rules, Arsenal dealt a huge blow to their most likely rivals for the title.Liverpool produced arguably their spell of Andoni Iraola's early months in charge with a blistering 30 minutes after conceding, but failed to take their chances as the Spaniard suffered just his second defeat in 14 games since arriving from Bournemouth.Mikel Arteta was stinging in his criticism of the Arsenal side that crashed out to fourth-tier Fleetwood on Tuesday in one of the biggest ever League Cup shocks. The Arsenal boss got the response he desired in a strong start from the champions.Havertz was one of the biggest culprits for wasting chances in midweek but made amends with a simple finish from Declan Rice's precise low cross. The early goal lit the touchpaper for a pulsating first 45 minutes as Liverpool roared back.Iraola and Arteta played together as boys for Basque side Antiguoko Kirol Elkartea. Arteta's old friend gave his side one of the most uncomfortable afternoons they have experienced in recent seasons as Arsenal's rock-solid defence was left clinging on for half-time.All of Liverpool's three £100mn-plus ($134mn) forwards started together and there are signs the relationship between Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola is beginning to flourish. Isak did Arsenal a favour by not going down as he was pulled back by Jurrien Timber when just failing to connect with a wicked delivery from Barcola.The visitors still had chances on the counter-attack as Bruno Guimaraes pulled a shot just wide before Timber inadvertently blocked Noni Madueke's ball across goal with Havertz waiting to apply the finish. Up the other end, Wirtz curled a free-kick onto the bar from a narrow angle and Alexis Mac Allister should have buried a header into the goal rather than finding the stand behind David Raya's goal.Half-time allowed Arsenal the chance to reset and take the wind out of Liverpool's sails as Iraola's men tired in the second period. Alisson Becker produced a stunning save to turn behind Christos Tzolis's shot that was arrowing into the bottom corner to keep Liverpool in the game.That intervention counted for little as Arsenal rode out the closing stages to register another clean sheet and an eighth win in nine league games. Defeat leaves fifth-placed Liverpool nine points adrift of the leaders and already facing a mountain to climb to get back in the title race.

Kai Havertz headed in the only goal for Arsenal but was also lucky to avoid a second-half red card.

Arsenal on the brink of title after nervy win over Burnley

Arsenal are on the brink of ending a 22-year wait to win the Premier League after beating Burnley 1-0 to open up a five-point lead at the top. Kai Havertz headed in the only goal but was also lucky to avoid a second-half red card that could swung the title race back in Manchester City's favour.The Gunners could be crowned champions as early as today should City fail to win at Bournemouth. Even if City do end the Cherries' 16-game unbeaten run and beat Aston Villa, Arsenal will secure the title with victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday.However, the narrow margin of victory against a Burnley side that have long since been relegated does offer City hope.An Arsenal draw at Selhurst Park would allow City to snatch the title on goal difference if Pep Guardiola's team win their final two matches. To add extra intrigue to the final days of the season, reports on Monday suggest Guardiola will leave City after a decorared decade in charge after Villa visit the Etihad on Sunday.Roared on by an expectant capacity crowd in their final home game of the season, Arsenal were tipped to put the Clarets to the sword with ease. Burnley have taken just two points from their last 10 matches but made Mikel Arteta's men work for the three points on another nervy night at the Emirates.Leandro Trossard struck the post from the edge of the area before Bukayo Saka saw a penalty appeal waived away as he attempted to turn in Havertz's low cross. Arsenal were forced to rely on their set piece threat once more to prise Burnley open.Havertz rose highest to power in Saka's delivery on 37 minutes as they scored from a corner for the 18th time in the league this season. Yet the floodgates did not open and Arsenal were very fortunate not to have to defend their lead with 10 men for the final quarter.Havertz raked his studs down the calf of Lesley Ugochukwu in a mistimed challenge. Despite a VAR review, the original decision of a yellow card was not upgraded to red.Havertz was quickly replaced by Viktor Gyokeres. The Swede's arrival failed to kickstart Arsenal as an attacking force. But their rock solid defensive record again edged them closer to the title. Since losing to City last month, Arsenal have not conceded in their last four league games.

Havertz eyes successful World Cup despite long injury absence

Germany forward Kai Havertz is close to his best form again after several injuries in the past 12 months, and a successful Arsenal run across three competitions ‌in the coming months will be the best preparation for the World Cup, ‌he said Wednesday. Havertz, who has been away from ‌the national team for more ‌than a year after missing ‌last year’s internationals through injury, is part of the Germany squad to face Switzerland on Friday and Ghana three days later. “I had a tough time. It was not easy for me,” Havertz told a press conference ahead of Germany’s friendly against hosts Switzerland. “I had my first injury in February last year, three and a half months out then comeback and then a setback with the knee injury,” he added. Havertz returned to action for the Premier League leaders Arsenal in January after being sidelined since August last year, but ‌the 26-year-old said he was ready for his club’s busy match schedule in the league, the FA Cup and the Champions League. “I now feel completely fit. I need the one or other game from the start to reach 100 percent but I feel fit to start lasting over 90 minutes,” he said. Havertz added that Arsenal’s busy schedule came just at the right time. “We have many matches in three competitions. I missed the first six months of the season and I will give it all for the club, and ‌to be able to go ‌with a lot of confidence to the World Cup. I want to be successful at this World Cup and lead the way,” he said. Germany have set their sights on winning the World Cup following shock group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022, determined to restore their reputation as a global football powerhouse. The tournament starts in June and is co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. The Germans, who have not reached a final in any major international tournament since winning their fourth World Cup in 2014 in Brazil, have been drawn in Group E with Ecuador, Curacao and Ivory Coast for the June 11-July 19 tournament. They play their opening World Cup match in Houston, Texas on June 14 against Curacao. Germany then travel to Toronto on June 20 to take on ‌Ivory Coast before their last group game against Ecuador in New York on June 25.

Late Havertz penalty snatches Arsenal draw at Leverkusen

Kai Havertz scored an 89th-minute penalty to snatch Arsenal a 1-1 draw away against Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League last-16 first leg Wednesday. Arsenal, who won all eight of their games in the league phase, fell behind to a simple Leverkusen corner when Robert Andrich headed in moments after half-time. But in the dying stages, substitute Havertz stepped up to convert against his former side after Noni Madueke was brought down in the box. The Premier League leaders lacked fluency and the set-piece specialists were ineffective despite several dangerous free-kicks, but now need just to win at home next week to reach the quarter-finals for a third consecutive season. With a young side still gelling after a summer rebuild, Leverkusen have been inconsistent this campaign but showed enough to suggest they could still threaten Arsenal at the Emirates next week. Both sides were tentative in the first half, with Leverkusen wary of Arsenal’s firepower and the Gunners even more risk averse than usual with next week’s return leg at home. Arsenal had two free-kicks near the hosts’ box inside the opening four minutes, but both came to nothing. Leverkusen were dangerous on the break, particularly through teenage forward Christian Kofane. The best chance of the opening period fell to Gabriel Martinelli, who blasted against the crossbar with 19 minutes gone. Leverkusen turned up the heat after half-time and were ahead within a minute. Martin Terrier forced an excellent fingertip save from David Raya from a Grimaldo cross after Leverkusen attacked straight from kick-off. Grimaldo took the ensuing corner and found Andrich in acres of space at the far post, giving the Germany midfielder a simple header to score. After the goal, Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand - who questioned the legality of the visitors’ dead-ball tactics pre-match - got involved in a fiery exchange with Arsenal’s set-piece coach Nicolas Jover. Arsenal’s first corner came on the hour mark and was greeted with a huge cheer from the 2,100-strong travelling contingent. Arsenal grew increasingly frustrated but were handed a lifeline when substitute Malik Tillman was adjudged to have fouled Madueke in the box. Havertz, who was greeted with warm applause when subbed on, nervelessly slotted the ball into the bottom corner and reacted with a muted celebration against his first professional club.
