Qatar began their title challenge at the 27th Gulf Cup with a 2-0 win over defending champions Bahrain at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium in Jeddah on Thursday, despite playing the final stages with 10 men.Boualem Khoukhi gave Qatar the breakthrough in the 61st minute before Hassan al-Haydos settled the contest with a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time. Coach Julen Lopetegui’s side played with 10 men after Ahmed Fathi was sent off for his second yellow card of the match in the 70th minute.United Arab Emirates, who thrashed Yemen 4-0, lead the group, followed by Qatar. Al Annabi will next meet Yemen on Sunday, while Bahrain face the UAE on the same day.Qatar could have taken an early lead but Almoez Ali failed to control an intelligent headed pass from Akram Afif early in the match. Afif then shot over the bar as Qatar looked for the opening goal.After the cooling break, Fathi should have scored from a Sultan Al Brake cutback but sent his shot well wide.Afif also fired over the bar as Qatar remained goalless despite creating several opportunities, while Bahrain struggled to put pressure on the Asian champions.Khoukhi then shot straight into the goalkeeper’s hands as Qatar continued their quest for a goal after the break.But Khoukhi was clinical in heading home Afif’s delivery from a free kick to give Qatar the lead shortly after Lopetegui made a triple substitution.Al-Haydos came in for Almoez, Yusuf Abdurisag replaced Ahmed Al Ganehi, while Edmilson Junior came off the bench for Karim Boudiaf.Bahrain put pressure on Qatar after Fathi’s sending-off. Kumail Aswad’s low shot just missed the left post, while Ibrahim Al Khatal headed over the bar.Abdurisag could have put the game to bed but failed to beat goalkeeper Ebrahim Lutfalla in a one-on-one situation.Al-Haydos drove the ball from the halfway line and was goal-bound before being brought down inside the box by Abbas Al-Asfoor, who was sent off with a red card.Al-Haydos calmly slotted the spot-kick into the right corner in the ninth minute of stoppage time to seal Qatar’s win in style.Earlier in the first Group B match at Al-Inma Stadium in Jeddah, Nicolas Gimenez opened the scoring in the 26th minute before Nader Sahal’s own goal doubled the UAE’s lead.Luanzinho made it 3-0 before half-time, while Gimenez headed his second six minutes after the break from Marcus Meloni’s cross.Hosts Saudi Arabia will meet Oman, while Kuwait will take on Iraq in Group A action tomorrow. 

It is far from certain that Hassan al-Haydos will start for Qatar at the FIFA World Cup, which begins on June 11. At 35, the veteran forward is more likely to be called upon from the bench, introduced in the closing stages to provide experience and composure when required. Yet al-Haydos' importance to the squad extends beyond the minutes he plays. Qatar's most-capped player, with 184 appearances and 41 goals, retired from international football in March 2024 after leading the country to back-to-back AFC Asian Cup titles. But a year later, following a request from head coach Julen Lopetegui, he returned to the national team setup to help Qatar navigate the final stages of their qualification journey and prepare for the nation's first World Cup appearance earned through competition rather than automatic qualification as hosts. "I am proud to have represented the national team for all these years. I will continue to live up to the trust placed in me by the people and the fans who have always supported the team," al-Haydos said after training in Santa Barbara, Qatar's base camp in Southern California. "The decision to retire from international football was not an easy one, and neither was the decision to return. At that time, however, I felt the team needed me, particularly in the dressing room, and that played a big part in my decision. As a player, the biggest difference now is the experience I have gained. Having gone through a World Cup in 2022, I believe I am better equipped to handle both the small details and the bigger challenges that come with a tournament of this magnitude." Al-Haydos believes Qatar are well prepared for the challenge ahead. "Our preparation did not begin with this training camp. It started the moment we secured qualification. Since then, everyone has been working to prepare the team in the best possible way and ensure we are fully ready for the World Cup," he said. "There are many qualities that athletes must possess, and they are not important only for me but for the entire team. One thing every young player, and the squad as a whole, must understand is the importance of maintaining a constant hunger for success - a desire for results, trophies and achievement. These are not just words. They must be reflected in your daily habits - how you train, how you eat, how you rest and how you conduct yourself every day." **media[453667]** Al-Haydos made his senior debut against Bahrain in a World Cup qualifier in 2008 and has been a central figure during the most successful period in Qatar's football history. He captained the team to their first Asian Cup title in 2019 and remained an influential member of the squad as Qatar retained the trophy in 2024. At club level, he has spent his entire career with Al Sadd, helping the Doha side win numerous domestic titles as well as the AFC Champions League in 2011. "I consider myself fortunate to have represented the national team for so many years. When I was young, wearing the national jersey was a dream. I have been lucky to play alongside outstanding teammates, both with the national team and at club level, and to learn from many great coaches throughout my career. Everything I have achieved is a blessing from God. But behind it all lies a great deal of hard work, sacrifice, time away from family and many challenges that people do not always see." Qatar arrive in North America carrying different expectations from those that surrounded their World Cup debut in 2022, when they became the first host nation to lose all three group matches. Since then, they have won a second successive Asian Cup title and secured qualification for the 2026 tournament, raising hopes of a stronger showing on the global stage. Qatar open their campaign against Switzerland in Santa Clara on June 13 before facing co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on June 18 and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle six days later. Al-Haydos is under no illusion about the task facing his side. "From my perspective, this is a very difficult group. Switzerland are among the strongest teams in Europe and the world. Canada will be playing on home soil in front of their supporters, and they are a strong side with excellent players. We know the challenge ahead of us will not be easy, but we believe in our chances. Right now, our full focus is on the opening match. The priority is to be ready, deliver a strong performance and achieve a positive result."
