Barcelona coach Hansi Flick insisted his team could turn around a 4-0 deficit in the Copa del Rey semi-final tie against Atletico Madrid.The Catalan giants host Diego Simeone's side today in the second leg after a heavy defeat by the Rojiblancos in February, needing a spectacular comeback if they are to defend the trophy."We are four goals behind, so we want to make the impossible possible, this is our goal for tomorrow," Flick told reporters. "We all know that it's not easy but in the end we never give up, and we start this match (aiming) for a clean sheet, believing in our strengths and that we can do it."Barca thrashed Villarreal 4-1 on Saturday at Camp Nou in La Liga, with a hat-trick from teenager star Lamine Yamal, the first of his career. Flick said the winger would be important against Atletico but the team as a whole needed to deliver for Barca to make a comeback."The team is always in focus," said Flick. "The first goal from him was a great recovery of the ball and a great pass from Fermin (Lopez), (Yamal) has the outstanding quality to score this goal and be in the right position at this moment. How he played after that was great to see, really happy about that, but in the end we need everyone, not only Lamine."Flick said the performance against Villarreal was a significant step forward for Barca and called on his players to deliver in similar fashion against Atletico. "We play against a fantastic team, they hurt us a lot in the last match, but we can do this," said Flick."We have to play smart, but with this hunger to make it happen. Last game against Villarreal we saw a totally different team, a different dynamic, a different intensity in our game. We have to play like one unit and this is the key for tomorrow."Barca will be without injured striker Robert Lewandowski but Pedri Gonzalez may be in line to start after a couple of substitute appearances following a hamstring problem.Simeone said his team's way of stopping Yamal would be to force him back into his own territory. "He's a very good player individually, above all he can make things happen in the final third," said the coach. "We have to take advantage of the chance that it gives us to attack in that area, we have to take him to where he's most uncomfortable, which is defending."With Atletico third in La Liga, 13 points behind leaders Barcelona, their best chances of silverware this season are via a cup route. "When you start in pre-season, you want to be fighting for everything in March. It's true we're a bit far from the top of La Liga, but we're doing well in the Copa and in the Champions League," added Simeone. "We are doing well where we are, fighting for what we want to fight for." 

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick commended Raphinha's mindset after the forward struck twice to help his team beat Real Madrid and retain the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday.The Brazilian winger has seven goals in his last five matches, including a brace in the 3-2 win over Los Blancos in Saudi Arabia. Raphinha was out injured for around two months as Barca's form dipped in October and November, but has come back strongly. "His mentality is unbelievable, his dynamic affects the whole team," Flick told reporters.Raphinha missed a fine chance in the first half but almost immediately fired Barca into the lead in Jeddah. Then with the score tied at 2-2, the 29-year-old struck the winner from outside the area, with the help of a deflection."He missed the first chance but the second one, he was there and (scored) the first goal, and it gave the team more confidence," continued Flick. "This is what Raphinha brings on the pitch, it's a lot of intensity and we need this."Barca won the Spanish Super Cup against Real Madrid last season on their way to claiming a domestic treble. Flick said he hoped the victory would help the La Liga leaders achieve their other ambitions this season."We are in a good mood, we have a lot of confidence now," said Flick, after Barca's 10th consecutive victory across all competitions. "This final was very important for us because against Real Madrid it's always something special. Again we won a final, and this is fantastic."Flick has won all eight finals he has competed in as a coach, including two last season against Madrid. "When we are focused, we concentrate and play like we did today, I have a really good feeling with the team, because it's important," added Flick.The coach brought on defender Ronald Araujo in the final stages, after the Uruguayan took a mental health break of around a month. "To be on the pitch and to win this title means a lot for him," said Flick. "I'm really happy that he's back, and happy that it seems like it's okay – we will support him always." 

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said retaining the Spanish Super Cup this week would be a boost for his team’s other ambitions this season. The record 15-time champions face Athletic Bilbao today in a semi-final clash at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Barca won the competition last season as the first part of a domestic treble, the first triumph of Flick’s reign, followed up by triumphs in La Liga and the Copa del Rey. “This tournament is a little bit different (to the equivalent competition) in Germany, but I like it,” said former Bayern Munich coach Flick. “For us to win the Super Cup (last season) gave us a lot of energy for the rest of the season and this is also what we want this year.” Even though significant questions remain around their defending, Barcelona are favourites to win the Super Cup and lead La Liga after nine consecutive top flight victories. Despite being outplayed by neighbours Espanyol in a tense derby clash on Saturday, late goals and a sensational performance from stopper Joan Garcia helped the Catalans claim a 2-0 victory. Flick insisted his team had to perform better at the back if they are to succeed in the sixth edition of the tournament held in Saudi Arabia. “It will not be an easy match (if) we make the same mistakes as on Saturday, it will not be easy, so we have to work on our things,” continued Flick. “We have to play much better in the defence, we have to play connected as one team, and this is what I missed on Saturday, so we have to make things much better.”Central defender Ronald Araujo could return to action this week after an extended mental health break. The Uruguayan was granted leave for around a month following a red card in Barcelona’s 3-0 Champions League defeat by Chelsea in November. “We will see this training (session) today and I will also want to speak with him, so we have not decided how to do it tomorrow,” said Flick. “I think it takes time, so if he feels ready for tomorrow maybe we will change something, but at the moment it’s not our plan to do this.” Flick confirmed Barcelona are close to signing Joao Cancelo from Al Hilal on loan until the end of the season, but the deal has not been completed. “With Joao maybe he can give us more options also as full-back, both sides in the offence, good quality, but (as far as) I know, it’s not done,” said Flick. Cancelo spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester City. Athletic, eighth in La Liga, last won the Super Cup in 2021, beating Barcelona in the final, and have lifted the trophy on three occasions. Only the Catalans and Real Madrid, on 13 triumphs, have a better record. “It’s widely expected that the final will be Barca against Madrid, but a lot can happen in 90 minutes, and we have to go out there and capitalise on that,” said Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde. “Our intention is to take advantage of any opportunity we get. We know the difficulties and the opponent we’re facing, we have to try to overcome them, and that’s about it.” Real Madrid’s Mbappe to miss Spanish Super CupReal Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe will miss the Spanish Super Cup this week as he recovers from a knee sprain. The Spanish giants did not name the French superstar, the team’s top goalscorer, in their squad for the tournament. Mbappe was diagnosed with the issue last week and a source close to the 27-year-old said he would likely be sidelined for at least three weeks. Xabi Alonso’s side face city rivals Atletico Madrid tomorrow in the semi-finals. The Spanish coach is under pressure after a disappointing start to the season, with his team trailing champions Barca by four points in La Liga.
