Under the slogan “Our Legacy in the Lead,” the HH The Amir Sword Festival kicks off Wednesday at the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club (QREC) and runs through February 14. This year’s edition marks a historic milestone, as the flagship festival is staged over four days for the first time, coinciding with QREC’s 50th anniversary.The festival features a total of 32 races across the four-day programme, with this year’s competition set to deliver thrilling, top-class racing as contenders vie for prestigious titles and major prizes. The schedule also includes the traditional Al Sabiq Championship, which brings together a select group of promising Qatari riders and continues to generate strong interest.The festival opens with two days of racing on the sand track, featuring leading sand performers among both Purebred Arabians and Thoroughbreds. Attention then shifts to the turf track on the third day, where one of the key races is reserved for local Thoroughbreds in the Al Rayyan Breeders Cup. The closing day, also on turf, stages the Festival’s most prestigious contests, led by the HH The Amir Sword and the HH The Amir Trophy, each carrying prize money of $2.5mn. The former, the centrepiece of the Festival, is sponsored by QNB and is a Group 1 contest for Purebred Arabians over 2400m. Al Ghadeer eyes historic trebleIn what promises to be a particularly special renewal, Al Ghadeer will be bidding not only to defend his title, but to win the HH The Amir Sword for a third consecutive time. Victory for Al Ghadeer, owned by Al Shaqab Racing, would secure a historic third triumph in the Doha Triple Crown, cementing his place in Purebred Arabian racing history.The champion will face a searching test against a number of strong rivals engaged in the race, with Wathnan Racing represented by two runners, Lippo De Carrere, winner of the UK Arabian Derby, alongside Haseef, a multiple Group PA winner, including the Group 2 PA French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Sprint. Al Shahania Stud, meanwhile, fields Samsa Al Shahania in the hope of rekindling memories of lifting the coveted sword in previous years. HH The Amir TrophyThe international stature of the HH The Amir Trophy continues to grow, with this year’s renewal staged as an International Group 2 contest. The race will feature Satono Glanz for the third consecutive year, carrying Japanese hopes of victory after finishing runner-up in each of the past two renewals. He will not be the sole Japanese representative, with fellow Group 2 winners Byzantine Dream and Deep Monster also carrying the same hopes. After Godolphin captured the Trophy in the past two years through Rebel’s Romance, their colours will this time be carried by El Cordobes, prepared for this assignment following a similar programme to that previously employed with the globetrotting Rebel’s Romance. HH The Amir Silver SwordThe HH The Amir Silver Sword is run over 2000 metres and will bring together 16 runners, including four of the leading Purebred Arabians from France. Among them is Laffan, owned by Al Wasmiyah Farm and trained by Francois Rohaut, who remains unbeaten to date, including victory in the Group 1 PA Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains. He is joined, under the same colours and for the same yard, by Alhaarith, who finished fourth behind Laffan at Saint-Cloud that day. Also lining up are Sienne Al Maury, representing Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari, who finished placed in a Group 3 contest, and Inaya Grine, carrying the colours of Salmeen Bin Abdulla al-Jabri, who finished third in her most recent outing in Casablanca. HH The Amir ShalfaThe festival’s closing day opens with Qatar’s biggest and most important domestic handicap, the HH The Amir Shalfa, contested over 2000 metres and restricted to horses that have qualified throughout the season. Last year’s winner Aafoor, owned by Al Jaryan Stud, returns to defend his title following his second victory in the HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani Rifle last month. Qatar International CupThe Group 1 PA Qatar International Cup for Purebred Arabians is run over 1600 metres and features Lino, a dual Group 3 winner. He was bred by his trainer, Eric Dell’Ova, who also prepares the horse and retains a share in his ownership. Another notable contender is Jenkille Hipolyte, owned and trained by Osama Omer Al-Dafea. The seven-year-old bay finished fourth in last year’s renewal and arrives off a win on his most recent start. Irish Thoroughbred Marketing CupThe Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cup, also over 1600m, takes on a new look this year as an International Listed contest. The race renews last season’s clash among the leading finishers, with Point Lynas, runner-up twelve months ago, aiming to go one better this time, particularly after finishing second in a Group 2 at Ascot last July. The task will not be straightforward; however, as last year’s winner General Panic, owned by Mohammed Abdulhadi Saad al-Hajri and trained by Ibrahim Saeed al-Malki, has continued to perform well this season and finished third on the HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani Rifle Day. Al Rayyan MileAmong the international runners confirmed for this year’s Al Rayyan Mile is another Godolphin-owned runner, Pacific Avenue, who previously travelled to Doha to land the Al Rayyan Stakes by two lengths last December. Also added through supplementary entry is Andab, from the Al Shaqab Racing operation and trained in Ireland by Joseph O’Brien. The three-year-old gelding will be coming off a Listed victory at Dundalk. 

The Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club (QREC) Monday announced its full readiness for the launch of the HH The Amir Sword Festival at Al Rayyan Racecourse, which will run over four days from Wednesday until Saturday. The programme will comprise two days of racing on the sand track, followed by two days on the turf.To mark this readiness, a press conference was held today at QREC, attended by Bader bin Mohammed al-Darwish, Acting Chief Executive Officer of QREC, Ahmed al-Sheebani, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, and Abdulla al-Kubaisi, Racing Manager.Representatives of the Festival’s sponsors were also present, including Nasr Jairoudi, General Manager of Alfardan Premier Motors, Hassan Youssef al-Obaidly, Director of Programs at the Social and Sports Activities Support Fund (DAAM), Ahmed Abdullah al-Attiyah, Director of Public Relations at the Qatar Media Corporation, and Faisal bin Khalid al-Otaibi, Chairman of Loom, the festival’s marketing partner.Ready for the flagship festivalSpeaking during the press conference, al-Darwish, said: “I would like to confirm that all organisational and logistical arrangements for this year’s HH The Amir Sword Festival have been completed, including the full readiness of the Al Rayyan Racecourse and the entire infrastructure of the QREC.”He added: “The Festival features a total of 32 races across the four days. It begins with two days of sand-track racing, bringing together the leading sand specialists among Purebred Arabians and Thoroughbreds. Attention then switches to the turf on the third day, which includes one of the Festival’s most important races, dedicated to local breeders. The Festival concludes with a series of major feature races, highlighted by the HH The Amir Sword and the HH The Amir Trophy, each carrying total prize money of $2.5mn. Notably, the HH The Amir Trophy will be staged this year as an International Group 2 contest for the first time, having previously held Group 3 status.”He confirmed that the HH The Amir Trophy for Thoroughbreds and the HH The Amir Sword for Purebred Arabians will both be run on the closing day, as Races 3 and 4 on the card.Al-Darwish noted that this year’s edition holds particular significance for Al Ghadeer, owned by Al Shaqab Racing, who will be seeking not only to defend his title, but also to secure the HH The Amir Sword for a third consecutive time. Achieving that feat would see the horse complete the Doha Triple Crown for the third time, an unprecedented achievement.Addressing the new elements of this year’s renewal of the Festival, al-Darwish said: “Among the additions to the programme are several new races, including the Middle-Distance Cup –a Local Purebred Arabian Handicap (85-105) over 1700m, the Sand Sprint Cup – a Thoroughbred Handicap (85-105) over 1200m, and the Qatar International Thoroughbred Handicap Cup (90-110) over 2400m. We are confident that competition among owners, trainers and jockeys will exceed expectations, given the high level of challenge across the programme. We wish all participants the very best as they compete for the season’s most prestigious honours.” 

 His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held Thursday an official session of talks at the Amiri Diwan. At the outset of the session, His Highness the Amir welcomed the chancellor and his accompanying delegation, hoping that the visit would contribute to developing relations between the two countries, pushing them to broader levels. **media[413111]**The chancellor voiced his thanks and appreciation to HH the Amir for the warm welcome, stressing Germany's keenness to strengthen co-operation between the two countries in various fields, especially in the economic and investment fields.  The session discussed ways to support and strengthen the strategic relations between the two countries and ways to develop them across various areas of partnership, particularly in the economy, investment, trade, energy, and military co-operation. **media[413110]**In addition, it discussed key regional and international issues and developments. His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, His Excellency Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Khulaifi, and a number of Their Excellencies the Ministers and senior officials attended the meeting.  On the German side, the session was attended by a number of Their Excellencies ranking officials, members of the official accompanying delegation. HH the Amir and the chancellor held a bilateral meeting, where they exchanged views on regional and international developments of common concern. HH the Amir also held a luncheon banquet in honour of the chancellor and his accompanying delegation. Earlier, the chancellor arrived at the Amir Diwan, where he was accorded an official reception ceremony.

King Philippe of the Kingdom of Belgium received the credentials of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Qatar to Belgium Talal bin Almas al-Saleh al-Sulaiti. The ambassador conveyed to the king the greetings of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and His Highness’s wishes to the king for continued good health and happiness, and to the government and people of Belgium for ongoing progress and prosperity. For his part, the king of Belgium entrusted the ambassador with his greetings to HH the Amir, wishing His Highness good health and happiness, and the State of Qatar continued advancement and prosperity. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani met in his office at the Amiri Diwan Wednesday with Saudi Minister of Defence Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud and his accompanying delegation during their visit to Qatar.  At the beginning of the meeting, the Saudi minister conveyed the greetings of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud to HH the Amir, and their wishes of enduring health and happiness to His Highness, and to the people of Qatar, further progress and prosperity.  HH the Amir entrusted Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud with his greetings to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, and his wishes to both of them for continued health and well-being, and to the brotherly Saudi people for lasting progress and prosperity.  They discussed the robust fraternal relations between the two countries and avenues for strengthening and advancing them. They further discussed the latest regional developments and the ongoing efforts addressed toward them, alongside a range of issues of mutual concern.  His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, alongside a number of Their Excellencies the ministers, attended the meeting. Also in attendance from the Saudi side were a host of Their Excellencies, members of the accompanying delegation.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani expressed hope that Web Summit Qatar 2026 will help stimulate the exchange of expertise and boost the knowledge-based economy in the region. In a post on his official account on X, HH the Amir said that during his visit today to the Web Summit Qatar 2026, he was briefed on the advanced initiatives that this leading technological platform in the region is hosting, which will open new paths for innovation, partnerships and entrepreneurship in the digital field, hoping that the summit will contribute to stimulating the exchange of experiences and supporting the knowledge economy in the region.
