President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali met on Wednesday with HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, at His Excellency's residence in Doha. During the meeting, they discussed cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to enhance and develop them in various fields. The two sides also exchanged views on several regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Guyana’s embassy in Qatar marked the country’s 60th Independence Anniversary with an official celebration at LuLu Abu Sidra Mall in Doha on Tuesday. Guyana’s President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali presided over the ceremony and delivered the keynote address. The celebration brought together Mohamed bin Hamad Holding chairman HE Sheikh Jasim bin Mohamed bin Hamad al-Thani, Assistant Undersecretary for Industrial Affairs and Business Development at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Saleh Majid al-Khulaifi, distinguished guests, members of the diplomatic corps, government representatives, business leaders, members of the Guyanese community, and friends of Guyana in Qatar to mark six decades of independence and showcase Guyana’s growing presence, achievements and opportunities on the global stage. Guyana’s ambassador to Qatar Safraaz Shadood addressed the audience with a welcome and introduction to the evening’s theme. The programme featured the 60th anniversary cake cutting, highlighting pillars of Guyana’s national identity and international engagement, including entrepreneurship, art and culture, education and literature, and partnerships. It included the official launch of Umami in Qatar, a Guyanese sauce brand whose products are expected to be available through LuLu Hypermarket stores. The celebration also featured the launch of a children’s book series from Salah Publishing by Guyanese author Julia Theresa Kanhai, with editions translated into Arabic and Malayalam. A Guyanese art and cultural exhibition opened as part of the programme, presenting works that highlighted the country’s heritage, cultural diversity, natural beauty and distinctive environment. The exhibition will remain open until September 12, offering members of the public, the diplomatic community, and friends of Guyana an opportunity to experience Guyana’s artistic and cultural heritage. The Doha event forms part of Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee year, commemorating six decades of independence, while looking toward a future of greater co-operation, innovation, opportunity and international engagement.

QatarEnergy has signed a production sharing agreement for shallow-water Block S4 offshore the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. The block was awarded through the 2022 Guyana Licensing Round.Under the terms of the agreement, QatarEnergy will hold a 35% share, while its partners TotalEnergies (the operator) will hold 40%, and Petronas will hold 25%. Commenting on this agreement, His Excellency the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said: “We are pleased to secure this exploration block in Guyana, further building on the strategy to expand our global upstream exploration activities.” He added: “I would like to thank the Government of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and our partners in the block for their valued support and co-operation.We look forward to working together to deliver on our exploration objectives.” Block S4 covers an area of 1,788sq km and is situated approximately 50-100km from Guyana’s coast, in water depths of 30-100m.

Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has completed a multi-specialisation medical convoy in Guyana, funded by Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).During the seven-day mission, the volunteering medical team from Hamad Medical Corporation and Sidra Medicine examined a total of 140 patients and performed 48 major surgeries, in light of the needs specified by the Ministry of Health, as follows: 16 cardiac catheterisations, 13 cancer surgeries, four paediatric gastrointestinal surgeries, and 15 urology surgeries.Apart from the medical team, there was a delegation from QFFD and QRCS, headed by Mohamed Ahmed al-Beshri, assistant secretary-general, Communication and Resource Development at QRCS. Members of the delegation included Dr Izzadeen Gaffar, coordinator, Medical Convoys Project at QRCS and Yousef al-Mulla, acting director of Humanitarian Aid Department at QFFD. They were received by Mohamed Ibrahim al-Rumaihi, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Qatar in Guyana, who helped facilitate the delegation’s mission and coordinate with local authorities.Two training workshops were delivered by the gynaecology and urology consultants for 38 local doctors. In addition, 30 medical professionals received on-the-job training during the procedures,Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation was supported with the medical supplies and equipment needed for cardiac catheterisation and specialised surgeries, helping upgrade the hospital’s resources and ensure continued services following the end of mission.Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana, held a special reception for the Qatari delegation, in the presence of al-Rumaihi. He praised Qatar’s support for his country during the Covid-19 pandemic, through the deployment of a fully equipped field hospital and the provision of ventilators and vaccines.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani sent a cable of congratulations to the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on the occasion of his swearing-in for a new presidential term, wishing him success in performing his duties and the relations between the two countries further progress and prosperity. His Highness the Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Thani also sent a similar cable of congratulations to the President of Guyana Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on the occasion of his swearing-in for a new presidential term.
