Yusuf Abdurisag produced a winning goal even as talismanic Akram Afif missed from the spot as Qatar steered past Yemen 1-0 in their second group stage match of 27th Gulf Cup at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on Sunday.It was Qatar’s second straight win and took their tally to six points and top spot in Group B. The UAE, who have three points, were playing Bahrain (1pt) in their second game.Qatar, who are 86 places above Yemen in the FIFA world rankings, somehow lacked their usual attacking flair against Yemen although Abdurisag’s 64th-minute goal was as heart-warming as much as it was spectacular.Sultan Al Brake sent in a cross from the left which went past Abdurisag to Edmilson Junior on the right. The Brazilian quickly sent it back to Abdurisag in the centre inside the 6-yard box, who controlled the ball well to beat the rival goalkeeper, a defender alike.Qatar showed right intent from the very start but Afif fired one wide from a good position while a Karim Boudiaf header flew over the bar.Hassan Al Haydos, who came off the bench to score in Qatar’s 2-0 win over Bahrain on Thursday, started and tested Yemen goalkeeper Mohammed Aman with a long-range shot, but the keeper dived to make the save.An injury forced Issa Laye off early in the match, with Jassim Gaber coming on as his replacement.Goalkeeper Aman denied Afif twice before the half-hour mark. First, he stopped a volley from the Al Sadd star before blocking his shot after Al Haydos sent a long ball into the box.Ayoub Alawi failed to connect with a header from a promising position as the stalemate continued at the interval.Edmilson replaced Hashim Ali after the half time break.Meanwhile, Aman continued his brilliant goalkeeping, stopping Abdurisag’s header shortly after the interval. Boualem Khoukhi, who scored against Bahrain, then headed just wide of the right post.Abdurisag finally put Qatar ahead four minutes later. The Maroons could have doubled their lead soon, but Aman well-judged Afif’s kick from the spot while diving to his left.Pedro Miguel, who was pushed by Hamzah Ghaleb, had won the penalty following a corner kick.Khoukhi blocked Adel Abbas Qasem’s attempt as Yemen tried to make a late comeback, but Qatar held on for victory.

The Arabian Gulf Cup has a rich history of goalscorers who have left their mark on the tournament over more than five decades since its inaugural edition in 1970, establishing the competition as one of the region's foremost stages for producing stars and setting records that have endured in Gulf football history. With the 27th edition of the tournament approaching, to be hosted by Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from Sep. 23 to Oct. 6, attention is once again turning to the leading goalscorers who have shaped the competition's history, foremost among them Kuwait's Jasem Yaqoub, who remains the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 18 goals. Yaqoub reached that tally in just three appearances. He scored three goals at the second edition in Saudi Arabia in 1972, finishing second behind Saudi Arabia's Saeed Ghorab, who scored five. Yaqoub then scored six goals at the third edition in Kuwait in 1974 to finish as top scorer, before netting nine goals at the fourth edition in Doha in 1976 and claiming the top-scorer award for a second consecutive tournament, taking his overall tally to 18. The record has stood for decades since Yaqoub retired in 1983 due to injury, allowing him to retain the all-time scoring record for nearly five decades. Iraq's Hussein Saeed and Saudi Arabia's Majed Abdullah share second place with 17 goals each. Hussein Saeed holds the record for the most goals scored in a single edition, having netted 10 at the fifth tournament in Iraq in 1979. He then added seven goals at the seventh edition in Oman in 1984, where he was named both top scorer and best player, taking his overall tally to 17. Abdullah, meanwhile, scored 17 goals in 26 matches across five consecutive appearances. He made his tournament debut at the fifth edition in Iraq in 1979, scoring seven goals to finish second in the scoring standings. He added three goals at the sixth edition in the UAE in 1982, sharing the top-scorer award with Kuwait's Youssef Suwaid, Bahrain's Ibrahim Zowaid and the UAE's Salem Khalifa. He then scored once at the seventh edition in 1984, which he was unable to complete because of injury, four times at the eighth edition in Bahrain, and twice at the ninth edition in Saudi Arabia in 1988. Kuwait's Faisal Al Dakhil and Jassem Al Huwaidi share third place with 14 goals each. Al Dakhil, one of the leading members of the Kuwait team that won the 1980 AFC Asian Cup and qualified for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain, scored eight goals at the fourth edition in Doha in 1976, finishing second behind Yaqoub. He added one goal at the fifth edition in Iraq in 1979 and five at the eighth edition in Bahrain in 1986. Al Huwaidi began his Gulf Cup career with one goal at the 11th edition in Doha in 1992 before producing his best performance at the 14th edition in Bahrain in 1998, scoring nine goals to finish as the tournament's top scorer. That made him the second-highest scorer in a single edition behind Hussein Saeed. He then added four goals at the 15th edition in Saudi Arabia in 2002. Qatar's Mansour Muftah and the UAE's Ali Mabkhout share fourth place with 13 goals each. Muftah appeared in six editions, beginning with five goals at the fourth tournament in Doha in 1976. He then scored once at the fifth edition in Iraq, once at the sixth, three times at the seventh, once at the ninth, and twice at the 10th edition in Kuwait in 1990. Mabkhout scored twice on his first appearance at the 21st edition, before netting five goals at the 22nd edition in 2014 to finish as top scorer. He added one goal at Gulf Cup 23 in Kuwait and five at Gulf Cup 24 in Doha in 2019, earning the top-scorer award for a second time and taking his overall tally to 13. Fifth place is shared by Kuwait's Youssef Suwaid and Bader Al Mutawa, with 12 goals each. Suwaid scored seven goals at the fifth edition in Iraq, three at the sixth in the UAE and two at the eighth in Bahrain in 1986. Al Mutawa appeared in six editions, scoring twice at Gulf Cup 16 in 2003, twice at Gulf Cup 17 and another two at Gulf Cup 18. He missed Gulf Cup 19 before finishing as top scorer at Gulf Cup 20 in Yemen with three goals. He then scored twice at the following edition in 2013 and once at Gulf Cup 22 in Saudi Arabia in 2014, his final appearance in the tournament. Qatar's Mahmoud Soufi, the UAE's Fahad Khamis and Saudi Arabia's Yasser Al Qahtani share sixth place with 10 goals each. Soufi scored once at the ninth edition and once at the 10th, followed by two goals at Gulf Cup 11 in Doha. He then shared the top-scorer award at Gulf Cup 12 with Saudi Arabia's Fuad Anwar after both scored four goals, before adding two more at Gulf Cup 13 in 1996. Khamis scored twice at the sixth edition and once at the seventh before excelling at the eighth tournament in Bahrain, where he scored six goals and finished as top scorer. He concluded his Gulf Cup appearances with one goal at the 10th edition in Kuwait in 1990. Al Qahtani scored three goals at Gulf Cup 16 in 2003, one at Gulf Cup 17, three at Gulf Cup 18 in 2007, two at Gulf Cup 19 and one at Gulf Cup 21 in Bahrain in 2013, taking his overall tally to 10 goals. These figures remain a testament to a tournament history rich in stars and prolific goalscorers, while the 27th edition in Jeddah will provide a new generation with the opportunity to pursue those records and add new chapters to the history of Arabian Gulf Cup goalscorers.  

Julen Lopetegui has named a 26-man Qatar squad for the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup in Saudi Arabia, with Tarek Salman returning after missing the World Cup, Lusail midfielder Naif al-Hadhrami earning a recall after a two-year absence and Hashim Ali also making the cut.Al Hashemi al-Hussein, Lucas Mendes and forward Mohammed Muntari, who has struggled with injuries, have been left out.Beyond those changes, however, there is little fresh about Lopetegui's selection, with the Spaniard sticking largely to the same core that represented Qatar at the World Cup in North America in June and July. The coach has also included several players who have not been regular starters for their clubs.Lopetegui has been a regular presence at Qatar Stars League matches in recent weeks as he assessed his options ahead of the tournament. His final squad, though, points to continuity rather than a major overhaul.Veteran forward Hassan al-Haydos is also in the squad. The 35-year-old Al Sadd forward reversed his decision to retire from international football ahead of the World Cup qualifiers and returned to the national team at Lopetegui's request. He scored in Qatar's 3-1 defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina at the World Cup but was mostly used as a substitute following his return.Striker Akram Afif and Almoez Ali remain the main attacking figures, while goalkeepers Mahmoud Abunada, Meshaal Barsham and Salah Zakaria have retained their places.Midfielder Assim Madibo is also included despite being handed a five-match ban for the tackle that broke the leg of Canada midfielder Ismael Kone during Qatar's 6-0 defeat in Vancouver at the World Cup.Qatar endured another group-stage exit at the World Cup, opening with a spirited 1-1 draw against Switzerland to earn their first point in the football showpiece before suffering heavy defeats by Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina.Despite that campaign, Lopetegui appears to retain the backing of the Qatar Football Association, with the team's main priority now being to defend their AFC Asian Cup title. Saudi Arabia will host the tournament from January 7 to February 5, 2027, with Qatar bidding for a third successive Asian Cup crown.Before then, Qatar will begin their Gulf Cup campaign in Group B against defending champions Bahrain on September 24. They will face Yemen three days later before completing the group stage against the United Arab Emirates on September 30.Hosts Saudi Arabia are in Group A alongside Iraq, Oman and Kuwait. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.Kuwait are the most successful team in Gulf Cup history with 10 titles, followed by Iraq with four. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have won the tournament three times each, while Oman, the UAE and Bahrain have two titles apiece. Yemen have yet to win the competition.The tournament will be played from September 23 to October 6, with matches at Jeddah's King Abdullah Sports City Stadium and Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium.

Qatar plans to host more high-profile sports and football tournaments over the next five years, building on the success of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the FIFA Arab Cup, the AGCFF U-23 Gulf Cup, and other major events, according to Jassim al-Jassim, CEO of the Local Organising Committee for Football Events.Al-Jassim was speaking at the third edition of the Mutual Dialogue Summit during a session titled “From Hosting to Legacy: How Gulf Sports Shape a Youth-Led Future,” moderated by Asrar al-Ansari, director of the Youth Department at the Co-operation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (Kuwait).He said the experience gained from hosting global tournaments, coupled with Qatar’s advanced infrastructure, has positioned the country to stage major international sporting events. He noted that many young Qataris discovered and developed their capabilities through hands-on involvement in these tournaments, enabling them to assume senior organisational and management roles without external supervision.Al-Jassim stressed that Qatari professionals have earned FIFA's full confidence to organise events independently, without direct intervention. He added that Hamad International Airport, security agencies, administrative bodies, and other state institutions are now fully equipped to manage large-scale international events, supported by effective contingency plans to address unforeseen challenges.He also highlighted Qatar’s growing reputation as a family-friendly, safe, and welcoming destination for women, noting that the country's sporting events consistently record high ticket sales.While embracing modern technologies and global best practices, al-Jassim said Qatar has remained committed to showcasing its heritage and traditions. He cited Al Bayt Stadium’s architecture and the Gulf bisht presented to Lionel Messi at the 2022 World Cup final as examples of this cultural emphasis.He further noted that Souq Waqif has emerged as one of the most popular destinations for visitors during international tournaments. This outcome was not deliberately planned, but one that reflects the enduring appeal of authentic Gulf heritage. Respect for national traditions, customs, and laws, he said, has remained central to all event-planning efforts.Among the most significant outcomes of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, al-Jassim added, was the importance of investing in local youth by training and engaging them in planning and organisational processes. This approach has paid off, with many trainees now holding senior management and supervisory positions and performing their roles with high efficiency.The third edition of the Mutual Dialogue Summit concluded on Monday. Organised by the QatarDebate Centre, the two-day event was held at Msheireb Museums in Doha and brought together more than 100 young men and women from GCC countries. It was held in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Youth, in co-operation with Msheireb Museums as the cultural partner. 

Saudi Arabia have been crowned champions of the AGCFF U-17 Gulf Cup Qatar 2025, after claiming a 2-0 win against the UAE in the final match held at Grand Hamad Stadium in Doha.The tournament brought together young football talents from the region to compete for the coveted trophy. This was the first time that the competition was held under the auspices of the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation (AGCFF).“Over the past two weeks, we witnessed the phenomenal talents of young players from the Arabian Gulf. The successful delivery of this tournament once again showcased Qatar’s commitment towards supporting emerging football talents from the region, while uniting fans to celebrate our shared passion for football. Congratulations to all the players who took part, and to Saudi Arabia for clinching the trophy,” said Jassim Sultan al-Rumaihi, AGCFF Secretary General.The AGCFF U-17 Gulf Cup is a precursor to a spectacular line-up of tournaments scheduled for this winter. Hosts Qatar, along with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 that will take place from November 3-27 at the state-of-the-art Competition Complex at Aspire Zone. Substitute Mohammed al-Khalaf scored a goal and made an assist as Saudi Arabia beat hosts Qatar 2-1 in the semi-finals of the U-17 Gulf Cup in Doha Tuesday.Despite an early goal from Qatar’s Adam Friakh in the 28th minute, Saudi Arabia, reduced to ten men after a red card, fought back. Al-Khalaf, coming as a sub in the 77th minute, scored and assisted, securing the win.
