Isaac Del Toro eyed double Mexican delight after claiming a Tour de France stage victory on Sunday on his Grand Boucle debut.The 22-year-old led home his team leader Tadej Pogacar for a UAE Team Emirates one-two on the Tour's 169km second stage from Tarragona to Barcelona.Now, all Mexican eyes will be turned to the World Cup last-16 clash in Mexico City between the co-hosts and England.All eyes except Del Toro's, though, as the match is due to kick-off at 2:00am Spanish time."I think I'm not allowed (to watch the game)," said Del Toro, who became the first Mexican Tour stage winner since Raul Alcala in 1990."I would love to see the match but I don't have the energy today to wake up (at 2:00am)."I'm too tired. Today was full gas but I just wish (them) the best of luck, they are doing a crazy good job and everybody is going like 200 percent effort so I hope we take this home. 'IT WILL BE A HARD MATCH'"I know it will be a very hard match but we will see in the morning what the score is."Del Toro also admitted that a Mexican win at the World Cup would top his own Tour success."I think everybody will be pleased about myself," he said."But all the people know football in Mexico and they watch and it's part of the culture."So, I think for satisfaction, they will be a little bit happier because they understand 100 per cent what's going on and what it means for Mexico."It would be one of the best things for the country to win both today (at the Tour) and also after (in the football)."Del Toro paid tribute to Pogacar, who let his teammate take the stage two victory on the short steep final Montjuic climb when he looked to have the legs to be able to push on and win himself."We are quite proud to have one friend like this in the team," said the Mexican, whose stage victory helped him take the lead in the green points jersey and young rider standings."I appreciate a lot his time and how much he wants to perform with us, to be with us, and to help us to be better."Thanks to him the sport changed a little bit and also he is pushing everybody to be better."I know he doesn't realise these kind of things because it's hard, but I'm super proud to be near to one human being like this."It's super nice and you can learn always something about him."'I WILL JUST ENJOY IT'Race leader Jonas Vingegaard came home in fourth, just behind Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, in the same time as the winner.But the bonus seconds claimed by the top three meant that the Dane's lead in the yellow jersey competition was cut to six seconds to four-time winner Pogacar, with Evenepoel now at 15sec and Del Toro at 16sec.With another 19 stages still to go, Vingegaard admitted that his team would not be too disappointed to give up the yellow jersey at some point and let another outfit control the pace in subsequent stages."As I said yesterday and today, I enjoy every single day in the yellow jersey," said the 29-year-old, who had not worn it since his second overall victory in 2023 before claiming it in Saturday's team time-trial."Of course, at one moment, it might be a good thing (to give it up), but for now, I will just enjoy it," added the reigning Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana champion.Young French starlet Paul Seixas was a relieved man to reach the finish after he was almost hit by a driver as he chased back to the peloton following a puncture."I almost hit a car who didn't look in his rear view mirror," said the 19-year-old Tour debutant, who was riding back through the team cars alongside Decathlon CMA CGM team-mate Aurelien Paret-Peintre."I really was very scared with Aurelien, it really was very dangerous."He did manage to rejoin the peloton and finished an impressive ninth, three seconds back from Del Toro, to move up to sixth overall at 42sec from Vingegaard.  

Jonas Vingegaard said on Saturday pulling on the yellow jersey at the Tour de France gave him closure after a horror crash two years ago almost ended his life.Vingegaard darted up the final climb on the 19.6km opening team time-trial at the Tour in Barcelona to give his Visma-Lease a Bike team the stage victory and himself the overall lead at the Grand Boucle.Two years ago he thought he was going to die after a crashing heavily on a rapid descent at the Tour of the Basque Country.He spent two weeks recovering in hospital from a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and blood in his lung tissue."It's been a few hard years for me for obvious reasons," the emotional 29-year-old Dane told reporters."I've been at times struggling in the last few years and now I feel like I can close this chapter in the book."Of course, it will always be a part of my book, laying there on the ground believing that I'm going to die. '...A BIT EMOTIONAL'"And then coming from that to this point is also for me a bit emotional."To be honest, when you're there on the ground, you don't even think about cycling. I just thought about trying to survive."So to be able to now get the yellow jersey again is a dream coming true, for sure," he added, seemingly close to tears.Vingegaard had not worn the yellow jersey since his second of back-to-back Tour victories in 2023.He made a remarkable recovery from his April 2024 crash to take part in the Tour just three months later, although he was clearly far from his best. WELL BEATENAlthough he was second to arch rival Tadej Pogacar in 2024 and 2025 -- as he had been on his Tour debut in 2021 -- he was well beaten in both of those.This was the first stage since 2023 in which Vingegaard had actually gained time on the Slovenian world champion and four-time Tour winner.But for Vingegaard, just wearing the jersey again was what mattered most."I'm extremely happy and proud of it," he said."It's just something that being back in the yellow jersey is for me the most important here."I'm just extremely happy. It's something I dreamed of for the last three years."'I NEED TO CHILL OUT'As for Pogacar, 27, he was satisfied with UAE Team Emirates' performance in the time-trial, with his burst up the final climb helping them finish third on the stage.The reigning champion is third in the overall standings, just 12 seconds behind Vingegaard.Ahead of Sunday's 169km second stage from Tarragona to Barcelona his main concern was to get some rest.Sunday's stage finishes with three circuits up the same Montjuic hill that provided the finale to the opening stage, on which Pogacar was fastest up the last climb.That earned him the climbers' polkadot jersey."First I need to decompress from today, chill out a little bit, it's not much time left to chill out until bedtime," he said."For tomorrow, it's quite a tricky stage, but it's for puncheurs and it's going to be really hectic in the final."Also before the final it's really complicated sometimes and we need to take care tomorrow and we'll see what we can do in the final." 

Jonas Vingegaard took the first leader’s yellow jersey of the 113th edition of the Tour de France as his Visma-Lease a Bike outfit won Saturday’s opening team time-trial in Barcelona.Vingegaard will wear the yellow jersey on Sunday for the first time since he last won the Grand Boucle in 2023."It’s the perfect start, still a long Tour obviously, but it’s the perfect start," said the 29-year-old Dane, who has won all three of his previous races this season."My teammates did an amazing job today, they were so strong, I didn't have to do much to be honest, they just drove me all the way to the finish to take the stage win for us and to take the yellow jersey.“For me, personally, after a few years without it, a few hard years, it's nice for me to experience it again.”He finished the 19.6km course eight seconds quicker than Filippo Ganna for Netcompany Ineos, with reigning champion Tadej Pogacar earning third place for UAE Team Emirates at 12sec."It's the biggest race of the world, it's an amazing victory for us, especially when it's a team time-trial where we're eight guys," added Vingegaard, who won the Giro d'Italia in May and the Vuelta a Espana last September."I have seven teammates who sacrificed for me today."Vingegaard has already won three stage races, and this was his 13th World Tour level victory of the season -- already a personal record.Pogacar rocketThroughout the stage, Visma had been almost neck-and-neck with Netcompany and the Lidl-Trek team of Spaniard Juan Ayuso.But Visma went quicker over the second half and Vingegaard made the difference on the final 800-metre uphill drag to the finish.Pogacar ended like a rocket for UAE, who had been fourth at all three time-checks, to snatch third place from Ayuso, who was 16 seconds off Vingegaard's time.Ayuso leads the young rider standings and will wear the white jersey on Sunday.World and Olympic time-trial champion Remco Evenepoel also finished strongly to take fifth for Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe at 19 seconds.There was also an impressive debut at the Tour for teenage French prodigy Paul Seixas who took sixth place for his Decathlon CMA CGM team, which had been as low as 15th at the first time-check and still down in ninth at the third.Visma, Lidl-Trek and Netcompany were within a second of each other at the first time check and within two at the second.Visma started to edge ahead at the third with a six-second gap to the other two.Netcompany suffered a blow between the second and third checks when their designated finisher, Kevin Vauquelin, suffered a rear puncture, meaning a quick change of plan and the much larger former time-trial world champion Ganna going full throttle all the way to the line.Lidl-Trek also lost Mattias Skjelmose to a puncture midway through their race, depriving Auyso of a key helper over the two short, sharp climbs at the end.UAE and Red Bull were a little off the pace at the three time-checks but Pogacar and Evenepoel proved their class with rapid finishes.Pogacar was fastest up the final climb and took the lead in the mountain's classification. He will start Sunday's second stage in the polka-dot jersey.His Mexican team-mate Isaac Del Toro finished strongly and is sixth overall, with Vingegaard's Italian team-mate Davide Piganzoli seventh and Red Bull's joint leader Florian Lipowitz eighth.Seixas will start Sunday's 169km second stage from Tarragona to Barcelona 10th overall at 39sec. 

Former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas said on Wednesday that his Netcompany Ineos team would be targeting the first yellow jersey of the Grand Boucle in Saturday's opening team time-trial.Now the British team's sporting director, Thomas is no stranger to time-trial success at the Tour.In 2017, he won the opening individual time-trial ahead of his team leader Chris Froome and wore the yellow jersey for four days. The following year, he went on to win the Tour.Netcompany Ineos have included several strong time-trialists in their eight-man team for the Tour, which begins in Barcelona.Italian Filippo Ganna is a twice former time-trial world champion having succeeded Norwegian Tobias Foss, while Briton Josh Tarling is a former European champion in the discipline.Asked at a press conference if he was aiming to win the opening 19.6km team time-trial, Thomas said: "I'd be lying if I said it wasn't."With their overall contender Oscar Onley, who was fourth last year, forced to miss the Tour through injury, the team will be hunting stage victories more than anything else. And none more so than the opening one.He said that the team had been practising throughout the year with the Tour TTT in mind."It's like anything, you're not going to win the mountain jersey without going up a hill," he said."But it's just a great opportunity for us, why not just give it a good shot? The boys are motivated for it."We've got some world-class time trialists... we've got two of the best individually and in the team discipline."It's just an exciting goal. Let's get out there, start with a bang and give it the best we can."New format At the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes a month ago, the team finished just nine seconds behind Visma-Lease a Bike in a 28.4km team time-trial in which they lost significant time when Onley's chain dropped and the others had to slow down and wait for him to fix it before continuing their charge.They will come into this weekend's race as one of the big favourites to take the first yellow jersey.The new team time-trial format, which ends with a punchy climb, requires classic time-trialists to deliver a more explosive climber to finish off their effort.In many teams case that will be their overall contender. Each team's time is taken when their first rider crosses the line. "Obviously there's been a lot of thought and a lot of discussion about the best strategy," said Thomas."You need a finisher that's able to go up that last climb quickly after the last 20 odd minutes."I don't think now is the time to discuss our strategy, but it's something we've put a lot of effort into."The final climb is less than a kilometre long and not massively steep, but tough enough that larger, heavier specialist sprinters or time-trialists would be unable to keep pace with a lighter punchy climber.
