More than 100 organisations have deployed a Qatari-developed simulation tool across 2,500 projects — from mosques and hospitals to high-rise offices and industrial plants — to measure and cut the energy consumed by buildings, which account for 40% of the total.Energia Suite, built by the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (Gord), was designed "to make energy performance measurable, understandable, and actionable," said founding chairman Dr Yousef Alhorr. It has been used on offices, retail and residential space, mosques, sports and fitness facilities, educational institutions, industrial environments, healthcare centres and hospitality developments."As 40% of energy is consumed in building operations, reducing energy usage within buildings is crucial for lowering the carbon footprint, whether locally or globally," Dr Alhorr said. "There are many strategies and techniques to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. However, to assess the impact of such solutions, you need assessment tools."The platform, he said, is the first of its kind in the region. It allows developers and project owners to test in advance whether a proposed energy-saving product or intervention will deliver the savings claimed for it.Energia Suite evaluates energy demand and estimates usage in both new and existing buildings, analysing passive design strategies, building performance and the performance of electro-mechanical systems. It then converts that data into benchmarks, energy performance labels and practical options for reducing consumption and carbon emissions.Rather than relying on traditional and time-consuming 3D modelling, the tool uses advanced mathematical algorithms and a normative calculation framework aligned with international standards including CEN-ISO, ASHRAE and GSAS. It can be operated from anywhere in the world and is backed by a sophisticated calculation engine."Energia Suite can be used to assess energy patterns of complex high-rise buildings as well as smaller projects," Dr Alhorr said. "It is among our latest initiatives to support energy efficiency in the built environment."Gord, based at Qatar Science and Technology Park, treats innovation as a continuous lifecycle, he added — "where innovation is treated as a continuous lifecycle that begins with ideation and extends all the way to regional and international scaling."Through the Gord Institute, the organisation researches and incubates proprietary low-carbon intellectual property tailored to the harsh climate of the Mena region and the Global South. Its patented advances include eco-friendly cements, carbon-negative plasters and ultra-efficient cooling software architectures, while its 3D printing facility offers low-waste additive manufacturing and digital inventory solutions."From individual retrofits to massive, city-scale developments, Energia Suite has become a trusted ecosystem partner, transforming how the industry approaches energy efficiency and environmental sustainability," Dr Alhorr said. 

Providing a huge boost for Qatar’s efforts at sustainable environment and setting a new benchmark in sustainable practices, a built-up area of over 3.1bn square feet has been awarded Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) recognition in Qatar, a top official revealed to Gulf Times.“The adoption of the Global Sustainability Assessment System inside Qatar has been phenomenal, driven heavily by public sector leadership such as the Public Works Authority of Qatar (Ashghal) and Qatar Museums,” Dr Yousef Alhorr, founding chairman, Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (Gord), headquartered at Qatar Science and Technology Park, disclosed.“Cumulatively, nearly 2,700 projects in Qatar have achieved GSAS green building recognition, representing a massive aggregated built-up area of over 3.1bn square feet. This includes foundational infrastructure such as the FIFA World Cup 2022 stadiums, ISF City, and Qatar Rail network,” he said in an exclusive interview.GSAS is the first green building and infrastructure rating system in the Middle East and North Africa. Developed by Gord, it measures environmental impacts to promote sustainable design, construction, and operations.Dr Alhorr said that in 2025 alone, nearly 200 projects achieved GSAS recognition in Qatar. “Of these, more than 150 were acknowledged for incorporating sustainable design and construction practices while the remaining projects were recognised for sustainable site development and environmentally responsible operations after occupancy,” underlined, Dr Alhorr.According to the official, the diversity of these buildings is very striking and important. He said: “When we look at the specific projects driving this momentum, the diversity is truly remarkable representing a broad mix of sectors, including healthcare facilities, educational buildings, parks and public spaces, residential communities, and commercial and mixed-use developments. Government-related entities played a decisive role with organisations such as Ashghal accounting for the largest share of certified green projects.”Dr Alhorr noted that Qatar Foundation demonstrated an extensive portfolio undergoing environmental verification, including the largest number of projects achieving GSAS Operations Platinum certification while in the healthcare sector, the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) advanced GSAS adoption across its facilities, reinforcing operational sustainability standards.“At the same time, private and semi-government developments also made notable progress, with Lusail City mixed-use development and Gewan Island residential buildings at The Pearl-Qatar setting benchmarks in sustainable luxury design. Commercial and institutional landmarks such as Vodafone’s headquarters in Msheireb and The View Hospital further highlighted cross-sector engagement, alongside large-scale recognitions for the QIN Master Plan and Qatar Free Zones, particularly Umm Al Houl and Marsa Districts, collectively representing the wide-ranging integration of GSAS across Qatar’s built environment ecosystem,” he highlighted.GSAS evaluates projects using eight main criteria. They are: Urban Connectivity; Site Selection; Energy Consumption; Water Use; Material Selection; Indoor Environment; Cultural & Economic Values and Management & Operations. Projects achieve certification by scoring points across all categories. Developers and contractors use the GSASgate Platform to track project progress, manage assessments, and secure final accreditation.Dr Alhorr said that Gord applies a truly 360-degree approach to sustainability. He stated: “Gord treats innovation as a continuous lifecycle that begins with ideation and extends all the way to regional and international scaling. Through the Gord Institute, we actively research and incubate proprietary, low-carbon intellectual property tailored for the harsh climate realities of the Mena region and the Global South.”The official pointed out that GSAS is increasing being adapted in several other countries in the region. He remarked: “Looking beyond Qatar, we are witnessing an exciting new chapter for regional sustainability. With the GCC Standardisation Organisation officially adopting GSAS as a regional standard (GSO 3000:2025), we are expecting a significant spike in GSAS projects across the region. To support this momentum, our capacity-building activities have actively started to roll out, effectively driving the implementation phase forward.”“In terms of regional footprint, GSAS frameworks have already been successfully implemented in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, on an introductory and foundational level, our systems have expanded through targeted capacity building and strategic alliance levels into Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Algeria,” added, Dr Alhorr. 

Ooredoo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD) to collaborate on research and assessments aimed at enhancing Ooredoo’s sustainability performance and identifying actionable opportunities for continuous improvement.The agreement was signed by Dr Yousef al-Horr, founding chairman of GORD, and Mohammed al-Madadi, executive director – Administration at Ooredoo Qatar, in a ceremony held at the Ooredoo Headquarters.GORD, headquartered at the Qatar Science and Technology Park, is recognised as a leading RDI entity within the global sustainability landscape. Its work spans all dimensions of environmental and social sustainability, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Qatar National Vision 2030.Through this collaboration, GORD will support Ooredoo by conducting specialised research, assessments, and expert evaluations that will help the organisation progress on its sustainability roadmap.Al-Madadi said, “By leveraging GORD’s expertise in sustainability research and development, we aim to further enhance our environmental performance and support national efforts to build a more sustainable future.”Dr al-Horr said, “Our MoU with Ooredoo represents a strategic alignment with this commitment, bringing together research-led insight, digital innovation, and globally recognised best practices to strengthen how sustainability is integrated across operations and infrastructure.“This collaboration is founded on our shared belief that meaningful progress is achieved when research, innovation, and responsibility converge, delivering impact-driven solutions for generations to come.”
