India's Shubman Gill said it was a "huge honour" to lead his side for the country's 600th Test when they face Sri Lanka Saturday in the opening match of a two-Test series.Only England (1,097) and Australia (883) have played more Tests than India and the landmark match also coincides with the anniversary of India's independence from British rule on August 15, 1947."It's a big honour and privilege for me to captain India in any Test match," Gill told reporters in Galle."Captaining India in our 600th Test is a huge honour and doing it on India's Independence Day makes it even more special."India began their Test journey in 1932 against England at Lord's and have since won 186 matches and lost 188. They have drawn 224 games, with one match ending in a tie.The tourists arrive in Sri Lanka looking to revive their red-ball fortunes after a difficult period under coach Gautam Gambhir.India, who have won eight and lost 10 of their 20 Tests under Gambhir, have slipped to fifth in the World Test Championship standings, one place above Sri Lanka. But Gill remains upbeat. Galle milestone"I'm very comfortable with the way we have progressed over the last year. I feel we are moving in the right direction," said Gill."Our main goal is to play in the World Test Championship final next year and if we win six or seven games out of the next nine, we have a good chance."He added: "To get there, winning this series is very important and that's what everyone is focusing on."The tourists have been forced to make changes in their line-up due to injuries.Top-order batter Sai Sudharsan is unavailable, and Devdutt Padikkal, who struck an unbeaten century in the warm-up game in Colombo, is set to take his place.The first match will also mark a milestone for Galle, which will become the first venue in Asia to host 50 Test matches.Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva, who has played at the venue since his school days, said it would be a "big occasion" for the picturesque venue overlooking the Indian Ocean.The venue traditionally offers turn for spinners, with many five-day matches ending in about three days.But de Silva said the pitch "will help the batters a lot".Sri Lanka too have injury concerns and will be without opening batter Pathum Nissanka and wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.Wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella is set to return to the Test side after an absence of more than three years.

India’s One-Day International captain Shubman Gill said winning next year’s World Cup is the ultimate ‌goal for his team, especially ​after they fell ‌at the final hurdle in ‌the 2023 edition ‌on home soil.India’s unbeaten ‌campaign in that home World Cup ended in defeat by Australia in the final in Ahmedabad.India have since won back-to-back T20 World Cups but Gill has set his sights on 50-overs cricket’s biggest prize when the tournament takes place ​in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October-November next year.“We felt like we were so ‌close last time,” Gill said ​yesterday.“To be able to get another crack at it in South Africa, it’s going to be a great opportunity for us. Winning a World Cup in any format for the country is the ultimate goal. So obviously, that is something that ‌sometimes runs in ‌my mind.”India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said their 20-overs World Cup triumph in 2024 had sparked a run of success for the country’s cricketers, with the men winning the Champions Trophy and the women lifting a first ODI World Cup ​title last year.“That one step was important, that taste was important for everyone to understand what it takes to win an ICC trophy,” Suryakumar said. “Now, there is no looking back. If this wonderful thing has started, let’s try and collect as ‌many (trophies) as ​possible.”

Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill Saturday said he respected the Indian selectors' shock decision to drop him from the squad for the T20 World Cup on home soil, calling it "destiny".The 26-year-old will lead the one-day team in three matches against New Zealand starting today in Vadodara before many of India's players head into a five-match T20 series.Indian selectors surprisingly axed the batsman from the T20 squad after he scored only 291 runs in his past 15 matches in the game's shortest format at an average of 24.25."Firstly, it is my belief that in my life, I am where I am supposed to be. Whatever is written in my destiny, I will have it," Gill told reporters."As a player I want to win games for my team, but having said that, I respect the selectors' decision. I wish the T20 team the very best. I hope that they win the World Cup."India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, are the defending champions in the T20 World Cup which takes place in India and Sri Lanka between February 7 and March 8.Before that, India will play 50-over matches against New Zealand with the spotlight on stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.Kohli and Rohit play only the ODI format since retiring from T20s, following the World Cup triumph in Barbados in 2024, and Test cricket.Gill said the presence of the two greats was invaluable for any captain."Definitely when you have these two people in your team, it makes your life a lot easier," said Gill."And whenever you are in a tough situation, they have been in those kind of situations and conditions many times in their life, so you can always go to them and see how they are thinking or what they would do."And that piece of information is very valuable for any captain."The 37-year-old Kohli and Rohit, 38, have been in top batting form in international and domestic cricket, scoring centuries and runs to turn back the clock.Meanwhile, New Zealand's ODI captain Michael Bracewell is keen to make the most of the Indian conditions ahead of the T20 World Cup."It's always fun coming over and playing here," said Bracewell, a left-hand batter and off-spinner."A month before the T20 World Cup, getting used to these conditions. You won't be in the same venue but in general, getting used to the nature of the surfaces that they have."Bracewell said he will name the playing XI at the toss but confirmed fast bowler Kristian Clarke will make his international debut in the ODI opener.
