Gaza civil defence services halved by fuel shortages, lack of equipment

The Civil Defence in the Gaza Strip announced that its operations have effectively been reduced by 50% due to the lack of fuel needed to run emergency vehicles and rescue equipment.Spokesperson for the Civil Defence, Mahmoud Basal, told Qatar News Agency (QNA) Monday that field teams have been struggling for weeks to secure the fuel required to operate the remaining essential vehicles and equipment, including fire engines, rescue and ambulance vehicles, as well as portable power generators that run on gasoline and are critical for removing hazards and retrieving trapped individuals.He stressed that these tools form the backbone of firefighting, rescue missions, evacuation operations, and emergency response for civilians enduring dire humanitarian conditions under Israeli attacks. He warned that rescue teams can no longer reach thousands of damaged and unstable buildings, and that search and recovery efforts are on the verge of being completely shut down.Basal noted that a significant portion of the Civil Defence's response to fires, explosions, and building collapses has already stalled, posing an immediate threat to civilian lives. Despite appeals to UN agencies and international organizations to supply the needed fuel, Israeli-imposed restrictions continue to block the entry of sufficient quantities, with distribution mechanisms falling far short of operational needs. This, he said, has caused a major paralysis in the Civil Defence's ability to fulfill its humanitarian duties.He called for lifting all restrictions on fuel delivery and ensuring immediate and full operational supply, with a transparent and consistent mechanism that aligns with the scale of the emergency in Gaza.Despite the lack of equipment, Basal emphasised that efforts to recover the bodies of Palestinians martyred in Israeli occupation airstrikes continue. However, operations are progressing extremely slowly due to severe equipment shortages. Currently, only one excavator is operating in central Gaza in co-ordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross and specialised teams to retrieve bodies from beneath the rubble.He said that once work is completed in the central and southern areas, the excavator will move to Gaza City and the northern region. Basal stressed that a single excavator is insufficient given the enormous number of bodies, and that additional heavy machinery is urgently needed to complete the process as quickly and safely as possible.Basal also noted that some international organisations have expressed willingness to support recovery efforts and bring in heavy machinery. Still, so far, no additional equipment has entered Gaza aside from the one excavator currently in use.He described the issue of missing persons as a profoundly humanitarian crisis, with families submitting daily pleas for help in recovering their loved ones. He estimated that around 10,000 bodies remain under the rubble, though obtaining precise figures is extremely difficult due to the conditions on the ground and the lack of comprehensive documentation.Specialised committees have been formed to document and assess families targeted by Israeli occupation attacks who require urgent intervention by Civil Defence teams.Basal concluded by noting that although Israeli aggression on Gaza ceased following the October ceasefire agreement, which according to official and UN reports, left around 92% of residential buildings fully or partially destroyed, the Israeli occupation continues to block the entry of reconstruction materials, rubble removal equipment, and essential humanitarian supplies for sectors including health and water. This ongoing obstruction, in violation of the humanitarian protocol annexed to the ceasefire agreement, is crippling local, municipal, and international efforts to provide basic services to war-stricken residents of the Gaza Strip.

UN Secretary-General, Egyptian Foreign Minister discuss Gaza developments

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed a range of regional and international issues, with a particular focus on the situation in the Gaza Strip. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The Egyptian minister reiterated his country's rejection of any proposals involving the displacement of Palestinians or the dissolution of the Palestinian cause. He condemned the Israeli practices of killing and starvation, and reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967, borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, which is essential for achieving stability in the Middle East. Abdelatty also praised the growing number of countries recognizing Palestinian statehood. He reaffirmed Egypt's full support for UN agencies operating in Gaza under difficult and dangerous conditions, particularly as Israel targets these agencies. He highlighted Egypt's ongoing support for Guterres and the UN, especially for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Abdelatty also announced Egypt's intention to host an international conference focused on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, in coordination with the United Nations, the Palestinian Authority, and international partners, aimed at mobilizing support for rebuilding efforts. The minister further outlined Egypt's position on Sudan, reaffirming support for the country's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. US President Says Gaza Talks Continue with Wide Regional Participation

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that ongoing talks have been taking place for four days with leaders from countries in the region to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, stressing that the negotiations would continue until a successful agreement that achieves peace is reached. Trump said on his Truth Social platform that the discussions included leaders from several Islamic countries and that the Palestinian movement, Hamas, was fully aware of these negotiations, adding that the Israeli side has been informed of all their details at every level. He noted that optimism was higher than at any time in decades of conflict and that there was genuine willingness and strong enthusiasm to reach a historic agreement, with all parties eager to move beyond what he described as a dark period of death and destruction. Trump expressed pride in being part of these negotiations, saying they must secure the release of hostages and establish lasting peace. Speaking separately to reporters at the White House, he said he was very close to reaching an agreement on Gaza, stressing that any deal would be contingent on the return of hostages and an end to the war. He described his talks with European and Arab leaders as productive and constructive.

Palestine warns against Israeli entity's calls to treat Gaza Strip as real estate

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned on Thursday of the danger of provocative Israeli calls to treat the Gaza Strip as real estate for sale, division, or allocation. The ministry considered this a continuation of the crimes of genocide and displacement, and an official admission of the occupation's intentions to completely destroy the Gaza Strip and transform it into a land unfit for human habitation. It also clearly reveals plans to displace its population. The ministry condemned in a statement the Israeli occupation's escalation of genocide and the use of starvation as a weapon of war. It affirms that the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the State of Palestine, in accordance with international law and legitimacy resolutions, and rejects all calls that treat the Strip as a mere empty land, as if it were up for sale or piracy at the auction of racist colonial rulers. The ministry warned of the dangers of international inaction and failure to halt these crimes and protect Palestinian civilians, calling for immediate intervention to compel the Israeli occupation government to halt its aggression against the Palestinian people and to salvage whatever remains of the credibility of the international system and those responsible for implementing its charters and laws.

Qatar will take all measures necessary to protect its security and sovereignty: Amir

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received a call on Tuesday from President of the US of America Donald Trump. During the call, the US president expressed his solidarity with Qatar and his strong condemnation of the attack on its sovereignty, noting that diplomatic resolutions could resolve outstanding issues in the region. The US President expressed his appreciation of the tireless mediation efforts made by His Highness the Amir and the State of Qatar, highlighting their active role in establishing peace in the region. He stressed that Qatar was a trusted strategic partner, calling on His Highness the Amir to continue Qatar's mediation efforts to end the war in the Gaza Strip. For his part, His Highness the Amir stressed that Qatar condemns and denounces, in the strongest terms, the reckless and criminal attack given it is a clear violation of the country's sovereignty and security, adding that it was a clear violation of international law's principles, and held the Israeli entity responsible for its repercussions, in light of the policy of aggression they adopt that threatens the region's stability and obstructs efforts to de-escalate and reach sustainable diplomatic solutions. His Highness the Amir called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities regarding these outrageous actions, and to hold those involved accountable, expressing hope that the US of America would support such a just approach. His Highness the Amir stressed in that regard that Qatar will take all the measures necessary to protect its security and sovereignty, and that it will continue its constructive approach of supporting brothers and friends, as well as just humanitarian causes to promote international peace and security.

660,000 Gaza children denied school for third year :UNRWA

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) confirmed Saturday that 660,000 children in the Gaza Strip are out of school for the third year in a row due to the ongoing war of annihilation waged by the Israeli occupation since Oct 2023. The war in Gaza is a war on children and must stop. Children must be always protected, UNRWA added in a statement. It reaffirmed the right of children to education, stressing that 660,000 children remain outside classrooms for the third consecutive year as a direct result of the war. In Gaza, children are at risk of becoming a lost generation due to the ongoing conflict, UNRWA stressed, calling for the importance of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and allowing children to return to their schools and lives. Since the onset of the Gaza genocide, over 17,085 school students have been killed, along with over 1,261 college students. According to the latest figures of the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education for the period between Oct 7, 2023, and August 2025, over 25,213 school students have been wounded, along with 2,671 college students.

WFP warns food aid to Gaza insufficient to prevent starvation

The World Food Program (WFP) has warned that food aid currently reaching the Gaza Strip remains far from enough to avert widespread starvation.WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain said in a press statement that the organization is now able to deliver about 100 aid trucks per day into Gaza, compared with 600 trucks daily during a two-month ceasefire that ended in mid-March.She stressed that this amount is not nearly sufficient to ensure people are adequately nourished and protected from starvation.McCain, who visited Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis this week - including a clinic supporting children and pregnant and lactating women - highlighted persistent challenges in delivering aid to vulnerable populations deeper inside Gaza."What we saw was utter devastation. "It was basically flattened, and we saw people who were very seriously hungry and malnourished," McCain said. She added that the visit underscored the urgent need for sustained access across the Strip to consistently provide essential food supplies.A report released Friday by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) - a global hunger monitoring body - found that about 514,000 people, nearly a quarter of Gaza's population, are already facing famine conditions in Gaza City and surrounding areas. The report also warned that famine could spread to the central and southern districts of Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September.Israel dismissed the IPC report as "deeply flawed" and urged the body to retract it on Wednesday, reiterating its rejection of previous warnings as false and biased.
