Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar finished with 10 wickets as India thrashed Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test in Galle on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.Playing only his second Test, Suthar impressed with his line and length to ensure India a memorable win in their 600th Test match.Suthar, 24, took four wickets in the first innings and kept up the onslaught to take 6-55, helping bowl out the hosts for 206 shortly after lunch on the final day.Set a target of 372, Sri Lanka's batters failed to apply themselves other than Sonal Dinusha, who top-scored in both innings.India captain Shubman Gill called the victory "very satisfying"."We were in a comfortable position but were not sure if the match would go on (because of weather), but the team responded well," he said.Gill praised Suthar and the batsmen for their effort on a wicket that was not easy to score runs off."He has been bowling magnificently. Looks like a very promising guy and someone who can play for India for a long time," he said.India claimed two wickets in the morning session after Sri Lanka resumed on 84-4 and then quickly ran through the tail.Captain Dhananjaya de Silva (59) and first-innings centurion Dinusha tried to fight back, batting for over two hours to add 95 runs for the fifth wicket. 'It was not easy'De Silva, dismissed off a no-ball early in his innings, looked set to make the most of the reprieve, posting his 20th half-century.But his knock ended after he attempted a sweep shot off Ravindra Jadeja and was caught at short fine leg by Suthar."It was not easy (batting fourth," said De Silva."They won the toss, got the runs on the board, and with our batting, we lost wickets and it went downhill from there."Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella posted a half-century in the first innings but couldn't make an impact in the second.Dickwella fell for 10 when he attempted to hit Prasidh Krishna over the slips but ended up edging one to the wicketkeeper.Suthar triggered a late-order collapse with a triple-wicket maiden after lunch and then in his next over claimed the last wicket of Keshara Nuwantha as Sri Lanka folded 36 minutes after lunch.The last four wickets fell for seven runs with Suthar claiming all four.The 25-year-old Dinusha (84) put up a solid effort despite little support from his teammates.Playing his fourth Test, he showcased maturity beyond his age, taking on India's spinners with nimble footwork.He was dismissed when Dhruv Jurel at leg slip took a bat-pad catch. He faced 128 deliveries during his defiant knock and hit eight fours and one six."We believed that we could draw the game even at lunch," said Sri Lanka head coach Gary Kirsten."Our instruction to the lower order batters was to bat as long as they could. We just needed one big partnership but once Dinusha was dismissed, it all fell off quickly."Apart from Suthar, the other stand out performer for India was batter Devdutt Padikkal, who posted 167 and 44 in the game, having come in as a late injury replacement."The wicket had its natural wear and tear but it was a good Test wicket," Padikkal said."Turned a lot more from the third day onwards. In the end it was all about who came out on top with their skill-set."The teams head to Colombo for the second Test starting on Sunday. BRIEF SCORES: India 462 (Padikkal 167, Rahul 82, Jayasuriya 4-109) and 193 (Pant 66, Asitha 4-31, Jayasuriya 3-43) beat Sri Lanka 284 (Dinusha 100, Dickwella 80, Suthar 4-76, Jadeja 3-57) and 206 (Dinusha 84, Dhananjaya 59, Suthar 6-55) by 165 runs. 

India took a big step towards victory in the first Test in Galle on Tuesday after their bowlers reduced Sri Lanka, chasing a daunting 372 to win, to 84-4 on day four.Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar took two wickets to rattle Sri Lanka's top-order on a pitch offering big turn.Earlier, India were bowled out for 193 at tea after Rishabh Pant top-scored with 66 and became the fastest player to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket.Sri Lanka then slipped to 47-4 before skipper Dhananjaya de Silva, unbeaten on 31, and Sonal Dinusha, 25 not out, put on a stubborn stand to steer their team to stumps."In Galle if you look at the history, spin plays a big part in the last couple of days and batting gets tough," said Sri Lanka's pace bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk."As a bowling group we have tried to improve and continue to find ways to get wickets. A team like India will continue to take the initiative."Opener Nishan Madushka Fernando was the first to go in the chase, top-edging a hook off Mohammed Siraj straight to fine leg to be dismissed for six.Pasindu Sooriyabandara endured a forgettable debut after coming in as a concussion substitute for veteran Dinesh Chandimal, who hurt himself while fielding when he hit his head on the ground and was ruled out of the rest of the match. Pant shinesSooriyabandara was trapped lbw by Suthar for a golden duck."The wicket was playing well," said Suthar. "Even when we were bowling in the second innings, we were getting only a little turn. Maybe tomorrow there will be more turn."Prasidh Krishna then had Kamindu Mendis caught at the first slip for two.De Silva survived being caught at slip off a no ball by Ravindra Jadeja when he was on seven.But Lahiru Udara fell to Suthar after close-in fielder Dhruv Jurel took a low catch, which the TV umpire gave out after several replays.The Sri Lankan camp were disappointed with the decision, as the ball looked to have hit the turf before settling into Jurel's hands.De Silva and first-innings centurion Dinusha then took Sri Lanka to safety without further drama but the hosts have more than 90 overs ahead of them to draw or win the match.Weather though could come to Sri Lanka's rescue, with rain again predicted on the fifth day of a weather-hit match.Sri Lanka earlier struck regular blows in India's second innings, but Pant kept his team in a strong position with an excellent knock including eight fours and two sixes.The swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman became the fastest player to 100 sixes, reaching the mark in 89 Test innings, surpassing Australia's Adam Gilchrist (130 innings).Devdutt Padikkal, who scored an outstanding 167 in the first innings, looked solid again for his 44 after he arrived at crease in the first over when Yashasvi Jaiswal went for a duck.Sri Lanka seamer Asitha Fernando stood out with figures of 4-31.BRIEF SCORS: Sri Lanka 284 and 84 for 4 (de Silva 31*, Suthar 2-30, Siraj 1-11) need 288 runs to beat India 462 and 193 (Pant 66, Padikkal 44, Asitha 4-41) 

Sonal Dinusha struck a defiant century to save Sri Lanka from following on before rain halted play on the third day of the opening Test in Galle on Monday.Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284 in reply to India's 462, conceding a first-innings lead of 178 runs, before bad weather prevented any further play.India will be hoping for good weather on the final two days to force a result and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.Rain has disrupted all three days so far, with 17 overs lost on the opening day and only 43 overs possible on day two.Monday's play saw 80.2 of a scheduled 98 overs bowled.The day belonged to the 25-year-old Dinusha, who produced a gritty 100 in only his fourth Test after Sri Lanka slumped to 90-5 and appeared in danger of being forced to follow on.The left-hander negotiated India's spin-heavy attack with assured footwork, putting together a crucial 146-run stand for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella.Dinusha said it was "very special" to hit his maiden Test century, especially as the team was under pressure after losing quick wickets."This is a very good Indian attack, and it's very pleasing to score runs off them," he told reporters after the day's play."We have two more days remaining and although India are ahead, we are not yet out of the game. We need to bowl well tomorrow and come up with a better batting effort in the second innings."Dickwella, playing his first Test in more than three years, justified his recall with a fine 80, regularly using the sweep shot against the spinners.He looked poised for a maiden Test century before edging fast bowler Prasidh Krishna behind. It was his 23rd Test half-century in 55 matches.Sri Lanka avoided being forced to bat again when tail-ender Prabath Jayasuriya swept left-arm spinner Manav Suthar for four.Dinusha reached his ton soon after with a single to mid-wicket off Suthar before his four-hour innings ended when Ravindra Jadeja trapped him leg before wicket.He faced 168 balls and struck four fours and two sixes.Suthar, playing only his second Test, bowled with good control to finish with 4-76, while fellow left-arm spinner Jadeja claimed 3-57."There was lot of assistance for spin bowlers, but it was important that we put the ball in the right areas and created opportunities," said Suthar."I thought all the bowlers did a decent job to get ourselves ahead of the game."India added just two runs to their overnight 460-9 before Asitha Fernando dismissed last man Prasidh Krishna on the fourth ball of the morning.Devdutt Padikkal top-scored for India with 167, while KL Rahul scored 82 and Dhruv Jurel made 51.Jayasuriya was Sri Lanka's most successful bowler with four wickets. BRIEF SCORES: Sri Lanka 284 (Dinusha 100, Dickwella 80, Suthar 4-76, Jadeja 3-57) trail India 462 (Padikkal 167, Rahul 82, Jurel 51, Jayasuriya 4-109) by 178 runs. 

Top-order batsman Devdutt Padikkal made a memorable comeback on Saturday, posting his maiden hundred as India finished the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka on 288-2 in Galle.Left-hander Padikkal reached 131 not out in a chanceless innings as India batted themselves into a strong position after electing to bat first in the country's 600th Test. Padikkal was recalled to the side as a late injury replacement for Sai Sudharsan and made a strong claim to become India's long-term number three batsman.He last played a Test in November 2024 but scored a hundred in a warm-up game in Colombo last week and carried that good form on to Galle.The 26-year-old faced 178 balls by the end of the day, hitting 12 fours and a six. India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak praised Padikkal's performance."He was waiting for an opportunity and he's made most of it today," he told reporters after the day's play."The pitch offered different challenges. There was assistance for seamers after the rain but he showed lots of character."Padikkal joined K.L. Rahul after opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out for 32 following a mix-up, and they combined to put India in a strong position.Padikkal was the first to reach his half-century, off 81 balls, while Rahul took 127 deliveries to record his 21st Test half-century.They added 150 runs for the second wicket before Rahul was forced to retire on 77 due to cramps soon after tea. Nasty blowRahul, who hit nine fours and a six, is expected to resume his innings on day two. Padikkal reached his hundred with a single off debutant spinner Keshara Nuwantha to mid-off.Sri Lanka's fielding coach Jordon Gregory rued the lost chances. "We were consistent with our areas for the most part of the game. The spinners in particular created some opportunities but didn't have much luck," he said."Credit to Padikkal in particular for the manner in which he batted. It was only his third Test and he looked solid."Indian captain Shubman Gill, who struck two boundaries in an over by Asitha Fernando, was dismissed for 16 when he tried to loft Prabath Jayasuriya but couldn't clear mid-off.Padikkal and Rishabh Pant saw India through to stumps, with the wicketkeeper-batsman stepping out to the spinners during his unbeaten 27-run knock that included three fours and a six.Sri Lanka fielder Nishan Fernando had to leave the field after copping a nasty blow on his helmet as Rahul attempted a sweep shot in the morning session.There were some concerns as the team physiotherapist conducted a concussion test on Fernando, who returned later to field in close.Only 73 overs of the scheduled 90 were possible due to rain, and play will start 15 minutes early on Sunday to make up for lost time.A sizeable crowd turned out as Galle hosted its landmark 50th Test, after Sri Lanka Cricket made entrance free for the public. India have not lost a Test against Sri Lanka since 2015. Brief Scores: India 288 for 2 (Padikkal 131*, Rahul 77*) vs Sri Lanka.
