Providing a huge boost for Qatar’s efforts at sustainable environment and setting a new benchmark in sustainable practices, a built-up area of over 3.1bn square feet has been awarded Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) recognition in Qatar, a top official revealed to Gulf Times.“The adoption of the Global Sustainability Assessment System inside Qatar has been phenomenal, driven heavily by public sector leadership such as the Public Works Authority of Qatar (Ashghal) and Qatar Museums,” Dr Yousef Alhorr, founding chairman, Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (Gord), headquartered at Qatar Science and Technology Park, disclosed.“Cumulatively, nearly 2,700 projects in Qatar have achieved GSAS green building recognition, representing a massive aggregated built-up area of over 3.1bn square feet. This includes foundational infrastructure such as the FIFA World Cup 2022 stadiums, ISF City, and Qatar Rail network,” he said in an exclusive interview.GSAS is the first green building and infrastructure rating system in the Middle East and North Africa. Developed by Gord, it measures environmental impacts to promote sustainable design, construction, and operations.Dr Alhorr said that in 2025 alone, nearly 200 projects achieved GSAS recognition in Qatar. “Of these, more than 150 were acknowledged for incorporating sustainable design and construction practices while the remaining projects were recognised for sustainable site development and environmentally responsible operations after occupancy,” underlined, Dr Alhorr.According to the official, the diversity of these buildings is very striking and important. He said: “When we look at the specific projects driving this momentum, the diversity is truly remarkable representing a broad mix of sectors, including healthcare facilities, educational buildings, parks and public spaces, residential communities, and commercial and mixed-use developments. Government-related entities played a decisive role with organisations such as Ashghal accounting for the largest share of certified green projects.”Dr Alhorr noted that Qatar Foundation demonstrated an extensive portfolio undergoing environmental verification, including the largest number of projects achieving GSAS Operations Platinum certification while in the healthcare sector, the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) advanced GSAS adoption across its facilities, reinforcing operational sustainability standards.“At the same time, private and semi-government developments also made notable progress, with Lusail City mixed-use development and Gewan Island residential buildings at The Pearl-Qatar setting benchmarks in sustainable luxury design. Commercial and institutional landmarks such as Vodafone’s headquarters in Msheireb and The View Hospital further highlighted cross-sector engagement, alongside large-scale recognitions for the QIN Master Plan and Qatar Free Zones, particularly Umm Al Houl and Marsa Districts, collectively representing the wide-ranging integration of GSAS across Qatar’s built environment ecosystem,” he highlighted.GSAS evaluates projects using eight main criteria. They are: Urban Connectivity; Site Selection; Energy Consumption; Water Use; Material Selection; Indoor Environment; Cultural & Economic Values and Management & Operations. Projects achieve certification by scoring points across all categories. Developers and contractors use the GSASgate Platform to track project progress, manage assessments, and secure final accreditation.Dr Alhorr said that Gord applies a truly 360-degree approach to sustainability. He stated: “Gord treats innovation as a continuous lifecycle that begins with ideation and extends all the way to regional and international scaling. Through the Gord Institute, we actively research and incubate proprietary, low-carbon intellectual property tailored for the harsh climate realities of the Mena region and the Global South.”The official pointed out that GSAS is increasing being adapted in several other countries in the region. He remarked: “Looking beyond Qatar, we are witnessing an exciting new chapter for regional sustainability. With the GCC Standardisation Organisation officially adopting GSAS as a regional standard (GSO 3000:2025), we are expecting a significant spike in GSAS projects across the region. To support this momentum, our capacity-building activities have actively started to roll out, effectively driving the implementation phase forward.”“In terms of regional footprint, GSAS frameworks have already been successfully implemented in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, on an introductory and foundational level, our systems have expanded through targeted capacity building and strategic alliance levels into Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Algeria,” added, Dr Alhorr. 

QNB Group has announced that its head office building has achieved the Gold Level certification under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS).Coinciding with Earth Day, the achievement reflects the group’s continued commitment to advancing environmental sustainability, in line with sustainable development priorities of Qatar National Vision 2030.The certification was awarded by the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD) under GSAS Operations, recognising the head office’s sustainable day-to-day operations.Yousef Ali al-Darwish, senior executive vice president of General Services, said:“The Gold GSAS certification is a testament to our unwavering commitment to integrating sustainability into every facet of our operations, as well as our ongoing responsibility to our community, our employees, and our nation.“Since our establishment in 1964, QNB has evolved alongside Qatar’s development, and today we continue to build on that legacy by embedding sustainability at the core of our operations. On this Earth Day, we are proud to continue to be a leader for sustainable operations in the financial sector, directly aligning with the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030.”Dr Yousef al-Horr, founding chairman of GORD, said: “By opting for GSAS Operations, QNB Group has shown a clear understanding that the long-term operational carbon footprint of a building far exceeds the embodied carbon of its initial construction. This milestone reflects the organisation’s forward-looking leadership that recognises the importance of reducing emissions through continuous performance, efficiency, and accountability.”GSAS is a comprehensive system developed specifically for the climatic and cultural context of the Mena region, making it the ideal standard for assessing the environmental impact of buildings in the Gulf region. Achieving Gold certification underscores QNB's strong operational performance across key areas, including energy and water, efficiency, enhanced indoor environmental quality and effective waste management practices.GSAS Gold-certified buildings can achieve reductions in energy and water consumption of between 20% and 30% compared to conventional buildings, contributing to lower operational costs and improved resource efficiency. GSAS Operations certification moves beyond design, validating the effectiveness of daily operational practices managed by QNB’s Facilities Management team.Building on this achievement, QNB Group has also attained a 4-Star GSAS Design & Build certification for its Lusail headquarters development and is advancing GSAS Design for Fit-Out certification. This reflects a holistic approach to sustainability — extending environmental performance beyond core infrastructure into interior spaces, with a focus on energy efficiency, responsible material selection, indoor environmental quality, and the comfort and well-being of employees and visitors.The certifications collectively form a key component of QNB Group’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy. By embedding sustainability across its operations and developments, QNB continues to support efficient resource management and contribute to the environmental pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030. 

The Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (Gord) announced that the GCC Standardisation Organisation (GSO) has officially adopted Gord’s Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) as the regional Gulf Standard GSO 3000:2025 for sustainable buildings.This standard applies to the construction and building sector across all GCC countries, aiming to enhance the environmental performance and efficiency of urban projects throughout the region.The regional adoption of GSAS comes as part of GSO’s efforts to develop an integrated framework guiding building and construction practices across the Gulf region, ensuring a practical methodology for applying sustainability requirements within the wider Gulf Building Code. It also contributes to catalysing the implementation of green practices across both public and private projects while supporting sustainable development goals throughout the region.Dr Yousef Alhorr, founding chairman of Gord, said: “The GCC Standardisation Organisation’s adoption of GSAS under Standard GSO 3000:2025 marks a pivotal milestone in establishing sustainability benchmarks for the building and construction sector across the GCC.“That said, policies and standards are only effective when they are matched by skilled professionals who can put them into practice. This underscores the vital importance of capacity building through training programmes, ensuring that goals and standards are transformed into measurable results on the ground”.To support the effective regional implementation of the new standard, Gord, in collaboration with GSO, organised the first specialised training workshop on the GSAS framework at the GSO headquarters in Riyadh. The intensive three-day programme focused on the GSAS Design & Build (D&B) framework. It was attended by more than 75 participants from government agencies and relevant sectors across the GCC, as part of an effort to build the professional capacity required to ensure a comprehensive and effective rollout of the adopted Gulf standard.The workshop was led by experts from Gord’s Center of Excellence, GSAS Trust, who utilised an integrated approach that combines academic theory with practical application, ensuring full alignment with the broader Gulf Building Code. Participants engaged in hands-on sessions covering GSAS methodologies for assessing environmental performance across eight key categories that include energy, water, indoor environment, cultural & economic value, site, urban connectivity, materials, and management & operations. Beyond theoretical frameworks, attendees gained practical proficiency in core system tools, including GSAS calculators and GSASgate – the online platform designed to manage sustainable building projects and track assessment and certification processes.Beyond knowledge dissemination, the workshop serves as a critical bridge to the mandatory qualifying exam for becoming a D&B Certified Green Professional (CGP). Professionals who successfully pass the exam are authorised to lead GSAS projects. Furthermore, having accredited CGPs on staff allows organisations to qualify as GSAS service providers, enhancing their competitiveness in major projects that require documented sustainability standards.
