Formula Two driver Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak escaped unhurt after his car burst into flames during practice on Friday when he crashed into a safety barrier, underlining driver fears about the safety of the new Madring circuit which will host its first Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.The driver, who spun before hitting the barriers at Turn 19, emerged uninjured from the accident and managed to climb out of his cockpit on his own, even though the rear of his car was already on fire.The session was halted for around half an hour to allow time to clean the track and repair the safety barrier that had absorbed the impact.It follows last month's testing by F3 drivers which saw 19 red flags across two days, albeit not all of them were for crashes, and concerns from Formula One drivers ahead of Sunday's race."When I heard about the 20 red flags in Formula 3, I was a bit surprised," said Mercedes's George Russell on Thursday."But when I then drove the circuit in the simulator, I was actually more surprised that there were only 20 red flags. It's a mad circuit."I'd even go so far as to say it's the riskiest track on the entire calendar."Madring has 22 corners and features blind turns and an impressive banked corner of up to 24 degrees called 'La Monumental'."I'll put my money on a red flag," said Alpine's Pierre Gasly.The semi-permanent circuit winds around Ifema, Madrid's exhibition centre, and is located to the north of the city, near Real Madrid's training complex and Barajas Airport.F1 drivers will get a first taste of the circuit during the opening free practice session later Friday. 

Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli was fastest for Mercedes in free practice at Madrid's new Spanish Grand Prix circuit on Friday with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton close behind.Second in a first practice led by teammate George Russell, Antonelli then set the pace in a later session halted briefly by Racing Bulls' British rookie Arvid Lindblad becoming the first F1 driver to crash at the Madring and bring out red flags.Antonelli's best lap of one minute and 33.662 seconds was 0.113 quicker than Leclerc's fastest effort. Seven-times champion Hamilton was 0.149 off the pace with Lindblad fourth despite the crash ending his session with 24 minutes to go.The 19-year-old apologised after losing control of the rear of the car and smashing into the barriers sideways at Turn 13.Russell, Antonelli's closest title rival who led practice one with a time of 1:34.077, was fifth.Leclerc and Hamilton had been third and fourth in the first session at a bright and sunny Madring, a challenging track that runs around the IFEMA exhibition centre near the capital's Barajas airport.Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen was sixth with McLaren's Oscar Piastri seventh and Racing Bulls' stand-in Yuki Tsunoda eighth and Esteban Ocon ninth for Haas.New Zealander Liam Lawson, standing in for injured French driver Isack Hadjar for the third race in a row, was 10th for Red Bull in both sessions.McLaren's reigning world champion Lando Norris missed the second session as the team changed his car's gearbox.After a fiery crash halted the earlier F2 practice, the opening Formula One session took place without interruptions or major incident.Home hero Fernando Alonso brushed the wall in his Aston Martin and was 15th and 17th in the sessions respectively, while Spain's other driver Carlos Sainz was 17th and 16th for Williams in his home city, and there were complaints from several drivers over the radio about others getting in the way."That's just nasty," exclaimed Hulkenberg after Hamilton failed to let the German through at the final corner.Lindblad also called out Hamilton and Antonelli as "stupid" after accusing them of obstruction at the circuit's signature 'La Monumental' banked turn 12.

The Formula One season will finish in Europe if the planned races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are cancelled due to the Middle East war, the sport's CEO Stefano Domenicali said Wednesday.The Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grands Prix were scrapped earlier this season due to the start of Israel and the United States' war with Iran.The Bahrain Grand Prix was eventually rescheduled and will now be held in Malaysia on October 4.Domenicali said F1 would decide whether or not to go ahead with the race in Qatar, scheduled for November 29, and the season finale in Abu Dhabi on December 6, by mid-September."That moment will be not be before the middle of September. For us today, the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are confirmed," he told reporters."But of course, if the situation will not be cleared the way that we believe it should be, before the middle of September, we will take the decision."And in that respect, I just want confirm to you that if this will not be possible, that the end of the season would be in Europe."There have been persistent rumours in the paddock suggesting an extra Grand Prix could be held at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, or that a second successive race may be staged in Las Vegas, the week after the one already slated for November 21.But Domenicali said that idea had been shelved."There was a possibility of having two races in Las Vegas but we don't want to ruin a jewel that is growing by undervaluing what we are doing there," he said."And of course, we don't have to forget that in that period of the year, we are fighting in the US against the NFL."Domenicali did not say which tracks in Europe could step in if needed, although the Imola circuit is reportedly the front-runner to host the finale if the Middle East conflict is still ongoing.The World Endurance Championship announced Tuesday it would conclude its season in Spain and Italy after cancelling planned events in Qatar and Bahrain. 

Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali says he wants to restore to this season's calendar at least one of the two races in the Middle East which were cancelled because of the war in the region.The two rounds scheduled for Bahrain and Jeddah in April were scrapped following the attack by the USA and Israel on Iran which spilled over to all the Arab Gulf states."If there is something that we can announce also related to the possibility of seeing if there is any space for what has not been done so far, we're going to do it, in the right moment and the right conditions," the Italian told UK broadcaster Sky Sport."That is really the hope, because if all the conditions are right, we're going to go ahead with our plan. If there is a chance, why not?"Domenicali did not say which of the two cancelled races would be reinstated, but Sky Sports suggested Bahrain would be slotted in at the beginning of October between Baku and Singapore.The decision would need to be taken before the August summer break for logistical reasons, Domenicali said.The last two rounds of this F1 season, which currently has only 22 races, are also scheduled for the Gulf with Qatar followed by the season-closer in Abu Dhabi in December.The F1 boss said he hoped they would go ahead."Our duty is to make sure we are ready to run our calendar as it is planned," he said."And we are monitoring the situation because it would be an incredibly positive message for sport, and also politically, that we are moving in this direction, because if this is happening, it is something we can say is behind us."The United States and Iran are engaged in negotiations aimed at bringing a lasting end to the war in the Middle East. 

Lewis Hamilton jokingly suggested he might have to sneak into the Mercedes garage and sabotage their cars to have a realistic ‌hope of winning a record eighth Formula One ​title.The Ferrari driver is ‌third in the standings after eight rounds but ‌46 points ⁠behind Mercedes's ‌Kimi Antonelli."Other than me going ‌into the Mercedes garage and undoing the bolts...," said the ⁠Briton on Thursday when asked what he had to do to make it a championship-winning year and whether it was realistic to considered him a title contender."I mean, Mercedes is a phenomenal team. You're seeing them perform at such an amazing level."It's really beautiful to see when ​a team is fully in synergy and what they've brought and what they've done this year is mighty. I think it's going ‌to take a huge ⁠amount for anyone ​to close them down," added the Briton, who ​won six of his seven titles with Mercedes.Mercedes have won seven of eight grands prix this season and started every race on pole position.Italian Antonelli, 19, won five in a row -- a sequence ended by Hamilton's first Ferrari win in Spain last month.That win, and two second places in the races immediately before that, revived talk of Hamilton challenging for a record eighth title."We ‌as a team have ‌to just continue to ⁠believe, continue to just stay calm," said Hamilton, also a ⁠record nine-time British Grand ⁠Prix winner, ahead of his home race at Silverstone on Sunday."We just have to extract everything we can from each weekend and even, if possible, a little bit more than what performance-wise is possible."It's also too early (to talk about the title). ​I mean, Kimi is far ahead, there is still a lot of points ahead and he pulled some more points ahead in the last race. But it’s not over till it’s over. Every single person is so geed up and pushing as much as they can, so that’s all I can ever ask for."Antonelli finished third in Austria last ‌Sunday, a race ​won by Mercedes teammate George Russell, while Hamilton was fifth.

Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli was fastest in Friday practice for the Austrian Grand Prix as Mercedes sought to bounce back from their first defeat of the season.The 19-year-old Italian, winner of five races in a row ‌until he retired in Spain this month and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton ended the dominant ​streak, was 0.040 quicker than ‌teammate George Russell in session one and then 0.237 faster than McLaren's Oscar ‌Piastri in the ⁠second.Piastri was consistently quick, ‌third in a scorching first practice session ‌with conditions declared a heat hazard, but Russell dropped to sixth at the end of a ⁠day after a disrupted second practice."We knew Mercedes would be a step ahead, and that’s how it played out, but it was productive for us," said Piastri.Red Bull's four-times world champion Max Verstappen was fourth in both practices for his team's home race, with Hamilton also fifth in both.McLaren's world champion Lando Norris, last year's winner at the Red Bull Ring, was seventh in the early session but third in the later afternoon when McLaren looked to ​be Mercedes's closest challengers."This track seems to suit us as we’ve seen in the last few years and that’s a good trend for the weekend ahead," said Norris.Russell said first practice had been strong for ‌Mercedes but McLaren and Red Bull ⁠had been quick in ​the second."It was a real surprise to see the first lap of the ​McLarens in P2, just right at the top, and their race pace especially on Lando's side looked a bit better than us," he added.Antonelli leads Hamilton by 41 points in the standings after seven rounds.EARLY ISSUES FOR MCLAREN AND RED BULLRed Bull had a difficult start to the day with Verstappen suffering issues with his upgraded car while teammate Isack Hadjar's car needed a hurried engine change and he missed the first 35 minutes.Four-time world champion Verstappen complained that "the whole car is shaking under braking"."At first we had an engine issue on Isack's car before the beginning of the session, so we had to do ‌a very late call to change ‌his engine," said team boss Laurent Mekies."And ⁠then on Max, we also had a troubled start with a couple of software issues that ⁠got us stuck in the garage."Norris remained ⁠in the garage for the first 45 minutes as McLaren wrestled with a hydraulics problem while Piastri complained about his car's brakes.Ferrari had F2 driver Dino Beganovic in Charles Leclerc's car for the opening session, clocking the ninth best time, with the Monegasque returning for the later hour and going eighth fastest."I’d say it was a solid but challenging start to the weekend, with the high ​temperatures making an already demanding circuit even tougher," said Hamilton."We’ve definitely got some work to do to find the right setup and balance and unlock some performance."Sergio Perez's Cadillac brought out red flags with just over a minute remaining after the Mexican stopped on the uphill climb, with the session then ended prematurely and no drivers able to do any practice starts.The Cadillac of Valtteri Bottas caught fire in session two after limping back to the pits with a damaged suspension and the car's floor sparking off the asphalt.Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa replaced Esteban Ocon at ‌Haas for the session ​and knocked over one of the team mechanics when he overshot his pit box, fortunately without injury. 

The MotoGP championship and five manufacturers announced on Friday a "historic" commercial agreement that extends their participation until 2031 in exchange for a share of revenue from TV broadcasters, sponsors and circuits. This agreement, inspired by the so?called "Concorde" accords in Formula 1, formalises a five-year commitment from Aprilia, Ducati, Honda, KTM and Yamaha who were working together as the Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers Association (MSMA). It will immediately unlock the silence that the teams have imposed on rider signings for 2027, many of which have already been completed.The negotiations, which lasted for weeks, involved the MSMA, the MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (SEG) and Liberty Media, the new owner of the commercial rights."Today is a defining moment for MotoGP," said Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP SEG, in a joint statement alongside the other executives from the respective brands."The commitment of the five manufacturers not only highlights the strength of the championship but also the shared ambition driving its future."The focus is firmly on what lies ahead: expanding our global reach, evolving the sport, and connecting with new audiences worldwide."Aprilia boss Massimo Rivola, president of the MSMA, hailed it as "a historic day". EACH TEAM TO RECEIVE 8 MILLION EUROSAccording to the website Motorsport.com, which first reported on this agreement several days ago, each team will receive around eight million euros per year from television, sponsor and motorcycle circuit revenues.Under the measures expected to be introduced in 2027, each team will be allowed only one bike per rider during practice and will have to develop its marketing and communications strategy, as in F1.In a technical revolution already announced, the displacement of the ultra-powerful, ultra-fast machines will be reduced from 1,000cc to 850cc for safety and environmental reasons, according to MotoGP.As for the numerous transfers, the arrival of Spain's Pedro Acosta (KTM) at Ducati is expected to be made official, where he will be the teammate and compatriot of seven-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez.His younger brother Alex Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) will move to KTM along with Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio (Ducati-VR46), while Italian Francesco "Pecco" Bagnaia will leave Ducati for Aprilia.Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, who is struggling at Yamaha, is expected to join Honda, while Spaniard Jorge Martín (Aprilia) and Japan's Ai Ogura (Aprilia-Trackhouse) will be heading to Yamaha. 

Carlos Sainz acknowledged that he needs to make a decision about his Formula 1 future this year, but said that his priority is to continue the "project" of helping Williams move up the grid.Sainz joined Williams ‌for the 2025 season on a multi-year contract. The exact terms were ​not revealed, but the ‌deal is believed to include a clause that would allow the ‌Spaniard to walk ⁠away after ‌two seasons if he's not pleased with ‌the team's direction or is offered a seat with a top team.Williams team ⁠principal James Vowles said recently that he has "zero doubt" about moving forward with the driver tandem of Sainz and Alex Albon, and Sainz shared that commitment ahead of this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix."Obviously very happy to hear from James," Sainz said. "I think we've made it mutual across one another that the ideal scenario and the ideal path moving forward for me has ​always been Williams and has always been seeing the progress of this team and continuing to help this team become a competitive team."That's what I would love the most and ‌very happy to see that ⁠my boss still wants ​me."Vowles has stated a goal of competing for a world ​championship by 2030. However, after Williams finished fifth with 137 points in last year's constructors championship, the team sits in eighth place with just seven points through five races this season.Six of those have come from Sainz, with Albon earning only one thus far as Williams has struggled to adjust to F1's new regulations.That has not deterred the 31-year-old Sainz, who signed with Williams in 2024 after losing his seat at Ferrari to Lewis Hamilton."I know I obviously need to take a decision this year ‌about my future but at the ‌same time, I made it ⁠very clear to Williams and to my management team that my priority is to ⁠make this project work," ⁠Sainz said. "When I did the commitment a couple of years ago to come here, it was with the commitment of trying to make this work and I wish we can do that."Obviously this year we've hit a bit of a big bump that we didn't expect and now all my attention and focus is ​to try and get this team out of the bump as soon as possible."Sainz added that when he joined Williams he knew that winning races was unlikely until at least 2028. However, he sees the following season as a realistic goal for regularly competing for podiums and 2030 as the year to challenge for a championship."I'm committed to try and help the team get out of this bump and do the best we can to recover," Sainz said. "I just ‌want to be winning ​in F1, that's my main message to my management and at the same time help Williams get back to the top."

Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli, the youngest championship leader in F1 history, will seek to complete a hat-trick of early season victories this weekend as Formula One returns after a month’s enforced absence due to the Middle East war. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver, triumphant in China and Japan, leads team-mate George Russell, who won the season-opening Australian race, by nine points ahead of what is effectively the start of another season, complete with revised rules and widespread car upgrades, at the Miami Grand Prix. “After a month without any racing, we are ready to get back on track,” said Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff. “We’ve used this break to analyse the opening races, address our weaknesses and rase our level. We’ve started the season well, but that counts for very little if you stand still. We know our competitors will have used this time to improve and build a deeper understanding of their cars so we expect the field to be closer in Miami. That’s the reality of F1 - it’s a challenge we must rise to.” Antonelli’s early triumphs made him the first Italian driver since Alberto Ascari in 1953 to win two consecutive races. Ascari completed his treble that season. Wolff also addressed the tweaks to the regulations to be introduced in Miami, aimed at making the cars and the spectacle more natural with reduced battery re-charging in qualifying and increased super-clipping power to reduce dangerous speed differentials. He said the revised rules would “respect the DNA of our sport” and deliver an improved spectacle without any significant reduction to Mercedes’ early-season performance advantage.For Mercedes, this Sunday’s race is an opportunity for a first win in Florida since the event was launched five years ago. It has been won twice by four-time champion Max Verstappen for Red Bull and twice by McLaren with a win apiece for world champion Lando Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri. They will harbour hopes of claiming points too with success in Saturday’s sprint race, won last year by Norris, but Ferrari are widely expected to be strong contenders too as they arrive in Miami, like McLaren, who are bringing an almost “completely new car”, with a heavily revised package. “It was one of our best tracks for pure pace, compared to others, last year,” said Norris. “It’s a different track and it may still suit us a little more than others.” After winning in 2022 and 2023, Verstappen will be aiming to stop Mercedes’ winning run and revive Red Bull’s challenge this year after a discouraging start. He is ninth, on 12 points, 60 adrift of Antonelli, with team-mate Isack Hadjar 12th on four. Ferrari’s duo of Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton are third and fourth respectively on 49 and 41 points with many paddock observers suggesting they are poised to fight for a first win since Carlos Sainz’s success in Mexico in October 2024. Leclerc’s eighth and last win came at Austin, Texas, shortly before Sainz’s triumph while Hamilton is chasing his 106th win and first since the 2024 Belgian race before he joined Ferrari. After a desultory first year, the Briton said he is relishing the challenge of a new formula that has seen him rediscover his racing mojo. “We’re all re-charged after the break,” said Russell, expressing the feelings of most drivers. “I’m hoping we can continue where we left off.” It will mark newcomers Cadillac’s first racing appearance on home soil in the United States when Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas venture out at the Hard Rock Stadium in a new American livery.
