Brendon McCullum has hailed his successor Stephen Fleming as "like me, but better", after England appointed his former New Zealand teammate as Test coach.McCullum was sacked from his role in charge of the red-ball side last month after a woeful Ashes campaign was followed by a 2-1 series loss at home to New Zealand, but he remains in charge of England's limited-overs teams.England are now reverting to a split coaching set-up with Fleming - like McCullum a former captain of New Zealand - taking over for the tour of South Africa later this year that follows a home series against Pakistan.Former batsman Fleming, 53, made his name as a coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL), leading Chennai Super Kings to five titles."The ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) has done incredibly well to get someone who has options all round the world," McCullum told Sky Sports. "To get someone (like him) to commit to English cricket for the period he has is an outstanding achievement."I had a great time for those four years and now it's heading in a different direction. Flem will be excellent. He's a little bit like me, but better."McCullum believes he can work closely with Fleming to avoid disputes over the availability of multi-format players such as Test captain Joe Root and white-ball skipper Harry Brook."Flem and I talk pretty much every day, we're close mates and we've done a lot together. He's one of those guys I trust completely," said McCullum."We have good robust conversations and both of us just want what's right for English cricket. We want to be able to set this thing up so England is successful across all three formats of the game."That is going to take some give and some take at times, but we both understand that and we are going to try and work very closely together."Former England batsman Marcus Trescothick will be the interim head coach for the three-Test series against Pakistan starting at Headingley on August 19. 

Joe Root said Stephen Fleming's appointment as England's test coach was a "big reason" he agreed to return as captain of the squad. Root replaced Ben Stokes after the all-rounder retired following the home series against New Zealand.Fleming succeeds compatriot Brendon McCullum, whose ⁠four-year Test tenure ended last month, though he remains England's white-ball coach."If I'm being brutally honest, ⁠it was a big reason why I wanted to do it," Root told the England and Wales Cricket Board."I'm very excited by the way he sees the game, where he sees us sit as a team, and the work that we have to do to get to where we want to get to. All of that got me very excited about taking this role on.""He's obviously got ⁠a wealth of experience and done some amazing things within the game as a player and as a coach, and I'm very much looking forward to the next little while, and us trying to build something pretty special together." Former New Zealand captain Fleming coached Chennai Super Kings for 17 years in the Indian Premier League before leaving last month. Root led England as their full-time Test captain between 2017 and 2022 before he was replaced ⁠by Stokes. Stokes and McCullum championed a take-no-prisoners approach, ⁠which endeared them ⁠to the fans and Root hinted he and Fleming would like to retain that attacking mindset. "The last four years have been the most fun I've had in professional cricket...," said the 35-year-old. "Clearly, the last little while is probably what's fresh in everyone's mind, but you're looking at a four-year period where we did a lot of amazing things. "I've taken a lot from that, and I feel it will be a big part of how I want to approach things moving forward as a leader of this team." England host Pakistan for a three-Test series beginning in Leeds on August 19.  

Joe Root was reappointed as England's Test captain on Thursday, with ex-New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming named as head coach as the team embark on a new era.The announcement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) follows the sacking of Brendon McCullum as Test coach and the shock retirement of former skipper Ben Stokes from international cricket earlier this month.McCullum, who remains in charge of England's white-ball teams, lost his job after a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand in June, which followed a disastrous Ashes campaign in Australia.Root will resume his role as skipper in the three-match series with Pakistan starting next month but Fleming is not scheduled to arrive until later in the year.Yorkshireman Root holds the record for captaining England in the most Tests (65) and to the most wins (27).He skippered the team from 2017 to 2022 and took the role on an interim basis at the Oval during the recent series against New Zealand.The 35-year-old is second behind India's Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time Test scoring list, with more than 14,000 runs."It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England men's Test captain again," said Root."The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after enjoying a brief taste of it again working with Baz McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward." 'Exceptional leader'Root described Fleming, 53, as an "exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game".Marcus Trescothick will be interim head coach for the Pakistan series, which starts at Headingley on August 19, ahead of Fleming's arrival later this year.The ECB said Fleming, who led Chennai Super Kings to five Indian Premier League titles, was one of the "most highly regarded coaches in world cricket".Fleming, who retired as a player in 2009, made 111 Test appearances for New Zealand."The ambition is always to win now," said Fleming. "But equally, it's about ensuring the team is well placed for the medium and long-term future."He added: "I'm particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as captain -- a generational talent who has achieved so much already."There is still plenty more to come from him, and I'm excited to support him so he can enjoy and thrive in the role in what is a different context to his first stint."Managing director of England men's cricket Rob Key hailed Fleming as one of the most highly respected figures in cricket."I believe he is the best person to guide a team stacked full of potential and turn that talent into a world-class outfit that can not only achieve success but sustain it," Key said.Key said Root was "passionate about leading this team into a new era".The two appointments draw a line under the ultra-attacking 'Bazball' era of McCullum and Stokes, which started in 2022.The two men injected new energy into a floundering Test team that had won just one match in 17 under Root.England won 10 out of their first 11 Tests under the pair but gradually lost momentum, crucially failing to win a series against Australia or India.Stokes made his dramatic retirement announcement during the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.He had been dropped for the second Test after breaking a team curfew at a London nightclub, the latest in a series of off-field incidents involving England players.McCullum denied rumours of a rift with his skipper after previous reports of tensions between the two men during the 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia. 

Former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming is leaving his IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after 18 years as coach, the franchise said on Monday.Fleming, 53, joined Chennai as a player in the inaugural edition of the T20 tournament in 2008 and took charge as coach the following year.He forged a formidable partnership with long-time skipper M.S. Dhoni, with Chennai becoming one of the most successful IPL franchises with five titles."The Super Kings and Head Coach Stephen Fleming have mutually decided to part ways," the franchise said in a statement."Together, we shared one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in IPL history. The legacy you've built will continue to inspire us. With immense respect and gratitude, Thank you, Stephen."Under Fleming's leadership, Chennai entered the Indian Premier League play-offs a record 12 times, while also being part of 10 IPL finals.Fleming also guided the team to two Champions League T20 trophies.Fleming had been under fire in the last few years after CSK failed to qualify for the Playoffs in the last three seasons since it’s title-winning campaign in 2023."Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude," Fleming was quoted as saying in the statement."My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved."Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever," he said.Fleming, a left-handed batter, scored 7,172 runs at an average of 40.06, including nine centuries, in 111 Tests for New Zealand between 1994 and 2008.He also played 280 one-day international and five T20 matches for the national team.
